  • New EA/Origin Access Game Out Now For Xbox One And PC

EA and Origin Access subscribers can now download football phenomenon FIFA 17 on Xbox One and PC. Subscribers can play the full version of the game for as long as their subscription remains active.

The title is not the first in the series to join the EA Access Vault: FIFA 14, FIFA 15, and 16 are also available for those who subscribe. We enjoyed the latest in the franchise when it launched in September 2016–critic Nathan Ditum awarded it a 9/10. Read his thoughts in our full FIFA 17 review.

Other big games in the Vault include Mirror’s Edge Catalyst, Star Wars: Battlefront, and Titanfall. For more, take a look at our complete rundown of all the EA/Origin Access free games.

In addition to free games, EA/Origin Access members can play some games (but not all) ahead of launch; most of the time, subscribers get a five-day headstart. Another benefit is that subscribers save 10% on all EA digital content, which knocks down the price of a $60 game to $54. The service costs $5/month or $30/year.

No version of EA Access is available on PlayStation 4. According to Sony, the service does not offer the kind of value PlayStation fans have come to expect. That being said, Sony maintains that it is open to having a dialogue with EA about how it might be able to bring EA Access to PS4 someday.

  • Dota 2 Now Requires Your Phone Number To Play Ranked Matches

Valve has released a new update for Dota 2 which it says is focused on “improving the matchmaking experience” in the popular multiplayer game. One of the major new changes is a requirement that asks players to register a phone number to play in ranked online multiplayer matches.

“Players using multiple accounts create a negative matchmaking experience at all skill brackets, so our goal is to add just enough friction to this process that the number of players doing this will be noticeably reduced,” it explained in a blog post. “Having more players using their primary accounts will have a positive effect on both Ranked and Unranked Matchmaking.”

From April 20, players have two weeks to register their mobile phone number. However, from May 4, accounts that do not have a phone number linked to it will no longer be able to participate in ranked play.

Phone numbers can be unlinked from an account so that a new one can be swapped in, but there is a three-month waiting period before the original number can be tied to a new account. This, Valve says, “is to prevent using the same number on multiple accounts.” Valve adds that “online services that provide phone numbers are not allowed.”

The update also brings back the Solo Queue, so players in ranked matchmaking can opt to only be matched up with other solo players. “Any player who selects this option will be placed into matches where all ten players are queuing solo,” Valve explained.

Tweaks have also been made to the way undesirable behaviour is dealt with in matchmaking.

“Being marked for low-priority matches now results in a duration-based ban from the Ranked queue, in addition to the current game-count-based low priority requirement. The ban will start at a low threshold of a few hours, and increase up to four days for players who are very frequently in low priority.”

Valve has also improved detection for “clear cases of intentional feeding,” which involves players sacrificing themselves to the enemy so the opposing hero can accrue experience and power quicker. Additionally, bot detection has been improved.

Finally, Valve has made ranked matchmaking unavailable in South Africa, India, and Dubai because their “low populations made them prime targets for various Ranked Matchmaking abuses.”

“For the time being, players in these regions will need to join Ranked Matchmaking queues in one of the other nearby supported servers. … We will update these servers as the unranked populations in these regions grow to the critical mass needed to be able to support splitting the user base into Ranked and Unranked queues.”

In December 2016 Dota 2 received a massive overhaul that reworked the game’s HUD, refined the map, hero console, top bar, and shop. The Monkey King, who is based on Sun Wukong, was also introduced in this patch. Dota 2 continues to be one of the most popular titles on Steam and currently has the most number of active players.

  • Dawn Of War 3 Open Beta Begins Today

Dawn of War III, the latest game in the Warhammer 40,000 franchise, launches April 27, but fans will have a chance to try it out for free this weekend.

An open beta starts today, April 21, at 10 AM PT/1 PM ET/6 PM BST, ending at the same time on Monday, April 24. Included in the beta is access to all three of the game’s factions–Space Marines, Eldar, and Orks–and a limited selection of elite heroes for each. The trial is multiplayer only, and you’ll have access to three maps and all three match sizes: 1v1, 2v2, and 3v3.

Additionally, you’ll be able to try out six doctrines per faction. Doctrines allow you to give your army abilities such as a health regeneration or taunts, altering the way it fights.

You can sign up to the open beta here, or take a look at a full match of gameplay here. Developer Relic Entertainment warns that any progress made in the beta will not carry over into the final game.

Reviews for the new strategy title recently went live, and the reception from critics has been positive. • The X-Files Has Been Renewed For Another Season

The X-Files Has Been Renewed For Another Season

The X-Files is coming back. It has been confirmed that the hugely popular sci-fi mystery show has been renewed for another season, which will premiere later this year.

    No Caption Provided

The show’s renewal was announced by Fox TV boss David Madden, who confirmed that stars David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson would be back, along with the show’s creator Chris Carter. “Iconic characters, rich storytelling, bold creators–these are the hallmarks of great TV shows. And they are some of the reasons why The X-Files has had such a profound impact on millions of fans worldwide,” Madden said in a statement.

“Chris’s creativity, along with the brilliant work of David and Gillian, continue to propel this pop culture phenomenon, and we can’t wait to see what fresh mysteries Mulder and Scully uncover in this next chapter.”

The X-Files first returned to screens for a limited-run season in early 2016, after more than a decade away. Although the new season met with mixed reviews, it proved a ratings hit. The season premiere was watched by more than 20 million viewers in the US, and the show was one of the most popular of the year.

The X-Files originally ran for nine years, and clocked up 202 episodes between 1993 and 2002. By the time the last of those original seasons had ended, it had become the longest-running consecutive sci-fi series ever on US broadcast TV. There were also two spinoff movies: 1998’s The X-Files: Fight the Future, and The X-Files: I Want to Believe in 2008.

Check Out Scary New Alien: Covenant Images

Alien: Covenant‘s cast and crew have been promising for some time that the latest movie in the sci-fi horror franchise would be a scary ride. Some new images have arrived via Empire, and they certainly suggest this, including one particularly gruesome still of the movie’s new creature, known as a Neomorph. Check out two pictures below, and one with a potential spoiler at the end of this story:

These new images follow a series of promotional teasers that were released earlier this week. They took the form of video messages left by crew members for their families back home–you can check the first two out here, while the subsequent ones are here and here.

Directed by Ridley Scott, Alien: Covenant stars Michael Fassbender, Katherine Waterston, Billy Crudup, James Franco, Danny McBride, and Demian Bichir. An intense full trailer was released in February, which followed this special prologue. There was also a disturbing poster for the movie.

Scott has promised several more movies in the series over the next few years. Last month he revealed that the name of the next film will be Alien: Awakening, and it will sit chronologically between 2012’s Prometheus and Covenant.

“There will be another one before we kind of literally and logically, clockwise, back into the rear back head of [the original] Alien,” he said. “It will go Prometheus, Awakening, Covenant. There will be more after this. If this is successful, and then the next one, and then there will definitely be three more.”

Alien: Covenant arrives in theaters on May 19 in the US and May 12 in the UK.

  • Cities: Skylines Xbox One Edition Out Now

Popular city-building game Cities: Skylines is now available on Xbox One, two years after its initial PC launch.

The port costs US $40 / £32 / AU $52.45, and it includes both the base game and its night-based expansion After Dark. It does not include any of the game’s other DLC, and it’s unclear if those add-ons–Snowfall, Natural Disasters, and the upcoming Mass Transit–will ever come to Xbox One. The game is also available physically in Europe, but other markets are only getting a digital release.

Cities: Skylines has sold well since its original release in 2015. After only a month, the game had passed a million copies sold, and publisher Paradox has stated it was “surprised” by the game’s success.

Here at GameSpot, we enjoyed the original PC version. In our Cities: Skylines review, real-life mayor Brett Todd said, “There is no better way to take a peek at life as a mayor without filing your papers to run for office in the real world.”

  • Overwatch's Controversial Tie Break Rule Changing Again

Overwatch's Controversial Tie Break Rule Changing Again

As part of a recent update, developer Blizzard changed how Overwatch ties are resolved in competitive Assault games. After “a tremendous amount of feedback,” the developer has decided to tweak the system again.

Before the patch, draws were decided by racing to capture a tie-breaker point. The update changed that to a progress-based system: “If neither team successfully captures the objective, a winner can be determined based on which team captured the largest portion,” Blizzard said at the time.

This created a problem, however. As Blizzard explains in a new blog post, it meant that teams only needed to reach 1% capture to potentially win a match.

“If Team A is on Hanamura defense and prevents Team B from ever gaining any capture progress, then when Team A is on offense they only need to reach 1% capture progress to win the game,” writes principal designer Scott Mercer. “This means Team B needs to always have someone contesting on the capture point, or they risk losing.”

To prevent this, the system will soon change slightly, meaning you’ll now need to reach at least 33% capture to win a tiebreak. So if Team A gains 10%, then Team B captures 20% in the next round, the match will end in a stalemate as neither team reached 33% capture. Conversely, if Team A reaches 90% on offense before Team B attacks to gain 40%, Team A wins as they had more progress than their opponent and a minimum of 33%.

Blizzard admits the tweak will result in more ties than the old arrangement, but feels “the additional clarity of the victory moment and ability for the defense to react to the offense are worth it.” The change will arrive in a future patch.

Overwatch was recently updated with a new expansion, called Uprising. The update added a bunch of new skins, items, and a PvE mode. You can watch us play the game and unlock boxes in our Overwatch Uprising livestream right here. In addition, a patch was released on PC to fix a PvE exploit and fix a load of bugs–take a look at the full patch notes here.

Game director Jeff Kaplan recently said Overwatch could come to Nintendo Switch down the road, though it would be “difficult” if it did happen. He’s also stated the game could get a map editor one day.

“We are extremely open-minded about releasing a map editor for Overwatch someday,” he said. “But because Overwatch was made with a brand new engine, this is not a small task or one which can happen any time soon.”

For more on Overwatch, you should definitely check out our own interview with Kaplan. He discusses an abandoned idea for a cat-with-a-jetpack hero, patching out Genji, bad Google images, Fast and the Furious, and more.

  • DC's Batgirl Might Not Be Played By A Big Star, Director States

DC's Batgirl Might Not Be Played By A Big Star, Director States

Last month it was announced that director Joss Whedon will be helming a Batgirl movie for DC. Now Whedon has been speaking about the project, and has revealed that he doesn’t expect a big star to play the title role.

    No Caption Provided

In an interview with Variety, Whedon stated that he wasn’t thinking about casting for now. “I feel like I’m creating this character, I’m going to dialogue with her, and then we’ll see who joins that later on,” he said

“I doubt it will be a name. This is somewhere where you go and find Batgirl and then you cast her”.

The director explained that although he wouldn’t avoid a star, it wasn’t his main focus. “I’m not against movie stars, they’re great, but you need somebody who’s going to be just right,” he said. “And a situation like this, the name carries a lot of weight so it’s not as critical.”

Whedon is no stranger to star-studded superhero movies, having helmed The Avengers and Avengers: Age of Ultron for Marvel. He is also known as the creator of TV shows such as Firefly, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and Agents of SHIELD.

It’s early days for the Batgirl film, and no producers are attached at this point. It will be DC’s second standalone female superhero movie, following the upcoming Wonder Woman, which releases in June. The studio is also at work on a Gotham City Sirens movie focusing on a number of female supervillains.

Bandai Namco also released the official synopsis for Code Vein. You play as a Revenant in a world “full of vicious enemies and monstrous bosses.” More from the synopsis follows below:

“In the not too distant future, a mysterious disaster has brought collapse to the world, as we know it. Towering skyscrapers, once symbols of prosperity, are now lifeless graves of humanity’s past pierced by the Thorns of Judgment. At the center of the destruction lies a hidden society of Revenants called Vein. This final stronghold is where the remaining few fight to survive, blessed with Gifts of power in exchange for their memories and a thirst for blood. Give into the bloodlust fully and risk becoming one of the Lost, fiendish ghouls devoid of any remaining humanity.”

As a Revenant, players can make use of items called Blood Veils, which drain the blood of enemies to enhance the player’s abilities, known as Gifts.

“Players can change their form to increase their strength, weaken enemies, and utilize new weapon abilities with overpowered attacks,” Bandai Namco said. “Utilizing the vast array of weaponry along with each character’s Gift, players can adapt and strategize to a variety of battle conditions that suit their play styles.”

Bandai Namco VP of marketing Eric Hartness said in a statement that Code Vein will offer a “fresh anime aesthetic and blood-curdling gameplay twists.”

The game is being developed by Bandai Namco Studios.
