  • Review: Mother Russia Bleeds – A Tepid Beat 'Em Up That's Big On Gore But Low On Gratification

    Wince and repeat.

Like most things from the late ’80s and early ’90s, the 2D side-scrolling beat ’em up is no longer particularly cool or relevant. Sure, a certain type of ageing nostalgist (guilty as charged) will get excited about Capcom Beat ‘Em Up Bundle or Streets of Rage 4, but the kids have long since moved on to something else. And let’s face it, the kids were probably right to. To genre outsiders, your average side-scrolling beat ’em up is shallow, repetitive and deeply dumb – and Mother Russia Bleeds is nothing if not an average side-scrolling beat ’em up, with an extra side order of unpleasantness.

You could always rely on the beat ’em up greats to insert a brief splash of colourful cartoon violence into a drab afternoon. Your muscle-bound hero may have been laying into a group of goons with a length of pipe, but the likes of Final Fight and Streets of Rage had all the grit and cynicism of an ’80s cartoon. Mother Russia Bleeds takes a rather different approach. It’s self-consciously dark and ‘Mature’. That’s ‘Mature’ as in the old cinematic rating, rather than the non-capitalised sense of the word, with the kind of hyper-violent flavour and obsession with grimy dystopia that only a mopey teenager would view as ‘adult’.

  • Here's Why Red Dead Online's Mugshots Look Like That

One of the first things you do in Red Dead Online, the multiplayer mode for Red Dead Redemption 2, is create a character and snap a mugshot when you’re finished.

You might think it’s odd that your character displays their hands so prominently in the mugshot, but that is in fact rooted in history. It was a common in the late 1800s to take photographs, or mugshots, of criminals with their hands in front of their bodies so authorities could easily identify distinguishing features such as cuts, tattoos, and other elements, according to Mashable. Police also had criminals pose next to a mirror so that their full face and profile are captured in the same image. Red Dead Online does this, too, in a further bid toward historical accuracy.

You can watch GameSpot’s character-creation video in the embed above to see all of this.

Red Dead Online is available now for Ultimate Edition owners, and it’ll launch November 28 for people who played Red Dead Redemption 2 on launch day (October 26). Those who played the game October 27-29 will get in on November 29, while everyone can start playing Red Dead Online on November 30. The online mode is available as part of a beta, so you can and should expect a number of issues to flare up during the early play period.

Red Dead Online also features a battle royale mode called Make It Count, while microtransactions in the game come in the form of gold bars (which you can’t buy yet). Keep checking back with GameSpot for lots more on Red Dead Online in the days and weeks to come.

  • Fortnite Adds Gifting Option For A Limited Time

Fortnite is getting in the holiday spirit with a new gifting feature that is available now on every platform except iOS. Gifting came to Fortnite today as part of the 6.31 update, and it’ll be available for only one week. Epic said in a blog post that this is the “initial gifting period,” which suggests gifting will return again at some later point in the future.

With the 6.31 update, the item shop now allows you to purchase an item for yourself or “buy as a gift.” After selecting that, you can choose to send it to anyone on your friends list. You can also send a custom message. Your friend will receive the gift the next time they log in.

    No Caption Provided

To use gifting, you must have multi-factor authentication enabled on your Fortnite account–you can find out how to do that here. What’s more, you need to have been friends with someone for at least 48 hours before you can send them a gift. Additionally, you’re only able to send a gift three times in a 24-hour period, while there are no refunds available on gifts. Finally, only currently available Fortnite items can be gifted.

Gifting is not available on iOS because Apple doesn’t allow it, Epic said.

In other news, Fortnite’s 6.31 update added new shotgun variants, a new limited-time mode, and more. You can get all the details in the full patch notes here.

  • Red Dead 2 Legendary Bear Pelt Guide — Here's What To Do With It

Red Dead 2 Legendary Bear Pelt Guide — Here's What To Do With It

When you’re not robbing, riding from town to town, and trying to keep rescue your fellow gangsters from the law in Red Dead Redemption 2, chances are pretty good you’ll be hunting. Tracking and killing animals keeps you and your gang fed and earns you crafting materials, as well as goods to sell to make money to get Arthur better equipment. But for any hunter in Red Dead Redemption 2, the ultimate prize are the various Legendary Animals scattered around the map, whose pelts yield unique rewards–if you’re canny enough to bring them down.

In Chapter 2, you’ll be introduced to your first Legendary Animal in a story mission with Hosea, in which he and Arthur set out to hunt a huge grizzly bear. You can return to the hunt later if you’re so inclined, but it’s possible to take the bear on your first encounter with it, if you’re skilled (or more likely, lucky). If you manage to kill and skin the big grizzly, you’ll get a Legendary Bear Pelt, a unique item in the world of Red Dead Redemption 2 that can be used to make special new gear.

The question is, what exactly do you do with the huge Legendary Bear Pelt once you have it? Red Dead 2 isn’t very clear on this point. In fact, there are special requirements for using the pelts of Legendary Animals–you can’t just sell them to any store in a town, or donate them to Pearson back at your camp. In the case of the Legendary Bear pelt, there’s a good chance you won’t even have heard of the person yet who you need to interact with in order to use it.

Here’s what you need to know about hunting the Legendary Bear, where you’ll find it, and what to do once you’ve killed it.

    No Caption Provided

    Where To Find The Bear

The easiest way to get to and deal with the Legendary grizzly is in Chapter 2, when you take on the mission Exit Pursued By a Bruised Ego from Hosea. Arthur and Hosea will head out to find the Baharati Grizzly Bear in the Grizzlies East region, north of O’Creagh’s Run, and once you’ve finished the mission, the bear will be hanging around in the area for you to hunt. Once you’ve fought off the bear during the mission, Hosea will decide to take his leave of hunting giant killer animals with some “I’m getting too old for this s—” dialogue. At that point, you can choose to stick around and finish what you started and take down the bear.

It’s worth noting that the bear is no pushover and it can definitely kill you if you’re not careful. If you’re not outfitted super well at this point in the game, you might want to take some time in the world to earn better gear and improve Arthur’s well-being before you commit to the fight. That said, it’s possible to kill the bear here and now–we did it with Arthur’s stock weapons that he had at this point in the game.

Bring down the bear and you’ll be able to skin it, taking a whole bunch of stuff, including the Legendary Bear Pelt. This is the unique item you need for crafting special clothing you can’t get anywhere else.

    No Caption Provided

You’ve Got The Legendary Bear Pelt–Now What?

Once you have the pelt, you’ll probably be pretty confused about what to actually do with it. Regular shopkeepers won’t take the pelt off your hands, and neither will Pearson in camp. You need to go to a specific person to deal with the pelt: the Trapper.

If you talk to Pearson, he may well off-handedly mention the Canadian fur trapper who hangs around in the area, which will mark the Trapper’s location on your map. He roams around, so make sure to check your map for his icon before heading out. He also has a shop in Saint Denis, located in the southeast corner of the map, in the outdoor market, where you can reliably find him.

    No Caption Provided

When you find the Trapper, you’ll be able to check out his goods, all of which are unique clothes made from the pelts of Legendary Animals. The thing is, you’ll need more than to just take down the bear if you want the whole outfit. Various Legendary Bear items also require other pelts, as well as for you to spend some money. Here’s what you’ll need to craft each piece of the Legendary Bear outfit:

    • Legendary Bear Head Hat: Legendary Bear Pelt, $40,
    • Legendary Bear Coat: Legendary Bear Pelt, Perfect Bison Pelt, $28
    • Legendary Bear Roper: Legendary Bear Pelt, Perfect Bull Hide, $34

Completing the outfit also requires the Boar Riding Gloves, which require a Perfect Boar Pelt and two Perfect Rabbit Pelts, and will cost you $15.

Though each of the bear items notes that a Legendary Bear Pelt is required, there’s only the one. Once you’ve taken down the Baharit Grizzly, you’ll have fulfilled the Bear Pelt requirement for each clothing item.

    No Caption Provided

What Happens If You Lose Your Bear Pelt?

You’ll likely sling the Legendary Bear Pelt onto your horse and then find yourself riding for quite a ways to track down the Trapper, whether you’re headed south to Saint Denis or out into the wilderness. In all that travel time, misfortune can easily befall even the most careful of cowboy, and if your horse falls or you’re killed, you’ll likely lose the Legendary Bear Pelt.

That’s okay! Don’t panic. Whether you carry the pelt physically to the Trapper or not, once you’ve killed and skinned the Baharati Grizzly Bear, the pelt is unlocked. That requirement will be fulfilled on the Trapper’s list even if you don’t actually carry the skin all the way to him. You can still access the clothing items once you have everything you need for the recipes.

There are a whole lot of other Legendary Animals to find out there in the big world of Red Dead Redemption 2–check out our guide on where to locate them all. And try our clothing guide for information about where you can get more clothes to customize Arthur’s look.

  • Fallout 76 Updates Detailed, First Coming Next Week

Two major updates are coming to Fallout 76 in December, Bethesda has announced, the first of which is landing on December 4. This update will increase the current Stash limit, and also fix bugs, improve performance and stability, and make some balance changes.

The Stash limit is rising from 400 to 600. That isn’t a whole lot, and that’s by design. Bethesda said it plans to increase it further after it can determine if the change won’t have a negative impact on the game’s overall stability. Also new in the update is changes to boss loot; specifically, taking down bosses will now earn players two or three items. The update also fixes an issue where players became stuck in power armor and those who die when overencumbered will now respawn back on the map instead of in Vault 76.

You can see highlights for the December 4 Fallout 76 patch below, as written by Bethesda. The full and complete patch notes are coming later. As for the December 11 patch, it will introduce push-to-talk chat on PC and allow players to respec their Special after level 50. The update will also add a new Camp item, the Bulldozer, while other Camp changes are planned. The patch highlights can be seen further down the page; the text was written by Bethesda.

Additionally, Bethesda said it’s aware that Fallout 76’s first major patch was too big–it came in at more than 40 GB on some platforms. The game’s future updates should be smaller, but Bethesda didn’t provide any details on the degree to which they may decrease in size relative to that first one. “We hear you, and we’re working to reduce our patch sizes going forward so that you can get back into game as soon as possible on patch days,” Bethesda said.

Fallout 76 might not have been adored by critics, but “millions” of people have played it, Bethesda said. The developer plans to support the game with new updates on a regular basis for potentially years into the future.

    December 4 Patch Highlights

    • Stash Limit Increased: We know many of you have been asking for an adjustment to the Stash storage limit, and we’re happy to share that we’re increasing it from 400 to 600. While this is somewhat conservative, we plan to increase the storage cap further once we verify that this change will not negatively impact the stability of the game.
    • Boss Loot: Players should correctly receive two to three items after taking down a boss, depending on the creature’s difficulty and level.
    • Cryolator Effects: Players hit with the Cryolator are now Chilled, Frosted, or Frozen depending on how many times they are hit. The duration of movement speed reductions applied by these effects have also been decreased from 2 hours to 30 seconds.
    • Respawning When Overencumbered: We’ve resolved an issue affecting players who die while overencumbered that only allowed them to Respawn at Vault 76. Now, overencumbered players will be able to respawn at the nearest discovered Map Marker.
    • Stuck in Power Armor: We’ve addressed an issue in this patch that could cause players to become stuck inside Power Armor. We’re also aware that there are some additional cases where this can occur, and we are actively investigating them.

    December 11 Patch Highlights

    • PC Additions: A Push-to-Talk setting for Voice Chat, 21:9 resolution support, and a Field of View setting are all being implemented on PC with this update.
    • SPECIAL Respec: After level 50, you’ll be able to choose between a new Perk Card, or moving a SPECIAL point you had previously allocated.
    • C.A.M.P. Placement on Login: Your C.A.M.P. will no longer be automatically blueprinted and stored if someone is occupying your location when you log into a server. Instead, you’ll receive a notification that your space is occupied. If you decide to find a new home for your C.A.M.P. on that server, it will be free to do so. However, if you don’t attempt to place down your C.A.M.P., you will be able to switch to a new server where that spot is vacant and your C.A.M.P. will be fully assembled and waiting for you.
    • Bulldozer: This is a new C.A.M.P. feature that will allow you to remove small trees, rocks, and other obstructions so it’s easier to create and place your C.A.M.P. when and where you want it. You can also “Bulldoze” to clear these items from the surrounding area to make your C.A.M.P. feel more like home!

  • Here's How You Can Make Your Own Ugly Red Dead Online Character

Red Dead Online is finally here–at least if you own the Ultimate Edition. We’re getting started with the Red Dead Redemption 2 multiplayer mode, and right out the gate your first task is to create a character. You begin by choosing a man or a woman, and then you’ll get to customise them to your heart’s content. The character-creator is very robust, as you can see in GameSpot’s new video preview embedded above. What you’ll also immediately notice is that it is truly difficult to make a character who doesn’t look like a gross slob.

That may be by design, as you’re playing as a rough criminal. The character-creator takes place inside of a jail, after all. We won’t reveal many of the other key early details, but you can probably anticipate what happens given that the first Red Dead Online achievement is called “Breakout.” Check out the full video above to see the character we created.

Red Dead Online is available now for Ultimate Edition owners, and it’ll launch November 28 for people who played Red Dead Redemption 2 on launch day (October 26). Those who played the game October 27-29 will get in on November 29, while everyone can start playing Red Dead Online on November 30. The online mode is available as part of a beta, so you can expect a few teething issues and other oddities to pop up along the way.

In other news, Red Dead Online features a battle royale mode called Make It Count, while microtransactions in the game come in the form of gold bars (which you can’t buy yet). Keep checking back with GameSpot for lots more on Red Dead Online in the days and weeks to come.

  • Lovecraftian Horror Awaits in Achtung! Cthulhu Tactics, Available Now on Xbox One

Lovecraftian Horror Awaits in Achtung! Cthulhu Tactics, Available Now on Xbox One

I’m here today to share an insight into our turn-based tactical strategy game Achthung! Cthulhu Tactics, which launches today on Xbox One. Check out the launch trailer above for a closer look at the Lovecraftian horrors that await like tentacles, automatic weapons, creeping insanity, and the Third Reich into a journey into the unknown.

There are two common interests shared by everyone here at Auroch Digital: a love of strategy games and a deep admiration for the mythos of the American author H. P. Lovecraft. So when the opportunity to work with publisher Ripstone and the creators of the original Achtung! Cthulhu board game Modiphius came along, we couldn’t wait to get started. A year or so later and here we are at the end of the project, the whole studio poised to unleash our game to Xbox players across the world.

    Acthung! Cthulhu Tactics

    Acthung! Cthulhu Tactics

Acthung! Cthulhu Tactics tells the story of a rough and ready team of commandos and mercenaries. They are investigating reports that the Nazis are raising an occult army of unimaginable horror, bringing evil forces from indescribable non-euclidean dimensions to help them win World War II.

It’s a turn-based experience through forests, factories and underground installations where you’ll be battling both the Nazi forces but also Cthulhu’s own putrid and be-tentacled denizens. It’s quite the trip.

    Acthung! Cthulhu Tactics

    Acthung! Cthulhu Tactics

On Xbox One, Achtung! Cthulhu Tactics really comes into its own. The sensation of filling your living room with eldritch abominations while you strategize your attacks from the comfort of your own sofa is really the best way to play the game. As an awesome addition for Xbox One X owners, you’ll be able to play the game in magnificent enhanced resolution modes as an Xbox One X Enhanced title. And fear not Xbox One owners; on standard units, we’re still giving you crystal sharp 1080p mythos fuelled terror.

It’s not common for developers to offer a serving suggestion for their game, but if I may: light some candles, draw the curtains, and enjoy supernatural tactics action while these winter nights draw in. Soak up that atmosphere and feel the terror spreading across the globe as Achtung! Cthulhu Tactics launches on Xbox One today.
