  • Documentary Tracks The History Of A Super Mario Bros. 3 Speedrun

Documentary Tracks The History Of A Super Mario Bros. 3 Speedrun

Speedruns are an immensely popular pastime nowadays, between the hundreds of thousands of people who watch marathons like Games Done Quick and the thousands who take a shot at beating games as quickly as possible. With the spectator and fun aspect of the hobby played up now more than ever, it’s easy to forget speedrunning is about setting records, and a new online documentary tracks the history of a particular Super Mario Bros. 3 record.

Summon Salt has released a 40-minute documentary taking a look at the game’s “Warpless” run. The subcategory tasks its runners with beating the game without using warp whistles, which allow players to skip most of the game. This means beating the game naturally, but as quickly as possible. The video is a fascinating look not only at how Super Mario Bros. 3’s best players one-upped each other over the years, but also at how speedrunning communities are often as collaborative as they are competitive, as runners build off one another in order to score a better time.

  • New, Retro-Looking PlayStation Nikes Coming Next Week

New, Retro-Looking PlayStation Nikes Coming Next Week

Back in January, PlayStation announced a collaboration with Paul George and Nike to create a pair of PlayStation-themed Nikes. The kicks ended up being extremely popular, which means the collaboration is back next month, this time sporting a more retro look.

The latest PlayStation Nike shoes are rocking the classic PlayStation grey, as well as a the older, more colorful logo for the console. Although the design is similar to the original, a new strap (emblazoned with the console’s iconic button symbols) makes it easier to keep them on tight.

The sneakers will release on December 1, so you have until then to plan your night around trying to get one of these at midnight before they’re all snatched up.

  • Review: Resident Evil: Director's Cut – Iconic Survival Horror

Jill sandwich, please, petrified with mixed herbs.

Spencer Mansion, set deep in Raccoon Forest, looming loftily in the Arklay Mountains, is the true star of Resident Evil. The colossal and creepy house setting of the game was inherited from Capcom’s 1989 Famicom title Sweet Home, but it was Resident Evil on PSone that popularised the survival horror genre. This 1996 third-person action adventure game created a survival blueprint, which became an archetypical structure for horror gaming’s future architectural plans.

Yet, the more that you play Resident Evil, the deeper that you understand that it’s a game about empowerment, as much as survival. The terrifying part is that when you begin the single-player only adventure, all of the power is clutched in the claws of the mansion’s monstrosities, and not in the trembling trigger fingers of Chris Redfield or Jill Valentine. The heroes of the Special Tactics and Rescue Service (S.T.A.R.S) are essentially trapped, they’re confused, poorly equipped, and stumble blindly through this demonically dark dwelling.

  • Review: Marvel's Spider-Man: Turf Wars – Another Helping of Spidey Goodness

    War never changes.

You probably know what to expect from Turf Wars, the second chapter in Marvel’s Spider-Man’s City That Never Sleeps expansion. As with The Heist, this DLC pack for Insomniac’s immensely popular superhero action game sticks with the established formula, providing a good excuse to get back into the swing of things. Yes, it’s more of the same once again, but when the core experience is as entertaining as this, it’s hard to complain.

Of course, the main draw is the story and characters, and this chapter continues the thread from the first. Turf Wars picks up not long after the events of The Heist, shifting focus from the mischievous Black Cat to the evil gang boss Hammerhead. After his exploits in the first DLC, Hammerhead takes centre stage as the key villain here. Various gangs are engaged in a power struggle, causing a lot of trouble for Spider-Man and the police. However, things really start to get out of hand when Hammerhead gets his hands on Sable equipment and weaponry.

  • IDFA 2018: Chilean Film 'Los Reyes' is a One-of-a-Kind Doggie Doc

    Los Reyes Review

As a die-hard dog lover, I’m always on the lookout for any new films about dogs. Los Reyes is one of the best dog films I’ve ever seen, and that’s not even hyperbole. This magnificent documentary is about a skate park in the capital city of Santiago, Chile where two dogs reign as kings (hence the title Los Reyes, or The Kings in Spanish). Their names are Chola and Fútbol (or Football), and they’ve been living there since, well, forever. The film focuses entirely on these two dogs, and it’s amazing. It’s pretty much perfect (save for one or two shots). These dogs are the coolest, and this is one of the most vividly alive & extraordinarily engaging proofs that dogs do have personalities, friendships, things they love to do, and big thoughts in their minds. ›››

  • First Trailer for Family Drama 'Mountain Rest' Directed by Alex O Eaton

    Mountain Rest

“You can’t bring me here and expect me to just hate her like you do.” FilmRise has debuted the first official trailer for an indie family drama titled Mountain Rest, which is the feature directorial debut of a music video director named Alex O Eaton. The film is about an aging actress named Ethel, played by Frances Conroy, who has sequestered herself in a cabin in a small mountain town for years. She calls her estranged daughter and granddaughter home for reconciliation and one final celebration, resulting in a strange and surprising weekend. The cast includes Natalia Dyer (from “Stranger Things”) and Kate Lyn Sheil (from “House of Cards”), plus Shawn Hatosy, Joshua Brady, Karson Kern, Alphie Hyorth, and Audrey Turner. This looks like a very intimate and emotional “art house” drama mainly for the film festival crowd. ›››

  • The cheapest Xbox Live Gold deals and 12 month membership prices on Cyber Monday 2018

Let us find you the cheapest Xbox Live Gold deals for 12-month memberships right here with our price comparison technology that searches through loads of retailers to bring you the best price whatever region you’re in.

After all we’re confident we can beat those auto-renew Xbox Live Gold prices of $60 in the US, £40 in UK or $79.95 in Australia. We see prices cheaper than this throughout the year and we’re in the best place to spot any discounts, especially around the Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals.

So as you’re probably all too aware, as with past consoles in the Xbox lineup, the Xbox One also requires an Xbox Live Gold subscription in order to play games online. It’s not all bad though, as Microsoft took a note from Sony’s similar PlayStation Plus offering and now gives out free games each month to members. You currently get two for the Xbox One and two Xbox 360 games to play on the old console or your Xbox One via its backwards-compatible feature.

You don’t get as many free games as Sony’s PS Plus service, but Microsoft’s Xbox Live service is generally seen as the more stable and reliable network of the two – although Sony’s PSN has been fine of late. You’ll also get Xbox One Gold member-exclusive discounts in the many sales on the Xbox Live store.

The cheapest Xbox Live Gold deals

We generally find that CDKeys is one of the cheapest prices to buy a 12-month Xbox Live Gold deal, but technical gremlins sometimes mean the prices don’t show up in our comparison chart below. Feel free to check the following CDKeys links though, just to make sure you’re getting the best Xbox Live Gold deal. Prices are usually hovering around £32-£36 in the UK and $43-$48 in the USand $60-$65 in Australia.

If you’d prefer to go down the official route, you can buy directly from Microsoft’s website. There are discounts sometimes, but we generally find prices stick to the full RRP. If you’d like to take a look, that’d be $59.99 in the US or £39.99 in the UK or $79.95 in Australia.

You can also get a shorter three-month Xbox Live Gold subscription. However, we don’t think this represents as good value as the cost per month works out much higher. If you want to dip your toe into the world of online gaming though, this is a good place to start, and doesn’t commit you to a full year. It’s worth checking if you could get a free month-long trial directly from your Xbox menu first though.

What are the free Xbox Games with Gold this month?

We’ve got you covered. Each month we update the list of extensive freebies for the Xbox Live Games with Gold promotion. Why not bookmark the page below to make sure you never miss out?
