Review: J.A. Bayona's 'Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom' is Silly, Cruel, and Entirely Unpalatable

    Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom Review

Steven Spielberg’s 1993 film, Jurassic Park, opened to critical and commercial success, earning over $914 million worldwide to become the highest-grossing movie ever at the time. More importantly, it impressed the hell out of an eight-year-old with an intense interest in prehistoric creatures. As a kid, I would spend hours pouring over books from the library, learning everything I could about Ankylosaurus, Plesiosaurus, and Triceratops. I watched every dinosaur movie I could find: Caveman, Baby: Secret of the Lost Legend, The Land Before Time. They were the closest I could get to seeing living, breathing prehistoric creatures. Until Jurassic Park, that is. Spielberg’s exhilarating masterwork of sustained awe & adventure ignited my imagination and made the impossible possible by resurrecting these long-extinct wonders with honest-to-goodness movie magic. ›››

First Trailer for Crystal Moselle's NYC Skater Girls Film 'Skate Kitchen'

    Skate Kitchen Trailer

“Why were you skating with them?!” Magnolia Pictures has released the first official trailer for a rad indie film titled Skate Kitchen, the first feature from The Wolf Pack director Crystal Moselle. This premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year to rave reviews (including my own). The film is about a group of skater girls from New York City, known as “Skate Kitchen”, following them for one summer. It’s a feature film, based on real people as they go skate around the city. The main character is a girl named Camille, played by Rachelle Vinberg. The cast includes Jaden Smith as a love interest, and the rest of the girls: Nina Moran, Dede, Kabrina Adams, Jules Lorenzo, Ajani Russell, and Ardelia Lovelace. This is a great trailer – introducing the ladies, giving us a glimpse at what this stylish, vibrant film is all about. Enjoy. ›››

“You’ve gotta get out there and show people who you really are.” Netflix has unveiled the first teaser trailer for a cute romantic comedy film titled To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before, an adaptation of the popular YA book of the same name written by Jenny Han. The story is about a young woman named Lara Jean Song Covey, whose love life goes from imaginary to out of control when the love letters for every boy she’s ever loved are mysteriously mailed out. Oh no, disaster!! Lana Condor stars as Lara Jean, and the cast includes Janel Parrish, Noah Centineo, John Corbett, Emilija Baranac, Israel Broussard, and Andrew Bachelor. From the filmmaker who last made Carrie Pilby. As expected, it looks amusing and super cute. ›››

  • New Trailer for Indie Film 'Katie Says Goodbye' Starring Olivia Cooke

New Trailer for Indie Film 'Katie Says Goodbye' Starring Olivia Cooke

    Katie Says Goodbye

“I just think people need to learn to appreciate things more… ‘Cause if you look at it in a certain way, life is just so amazing.” Signature Entertainment has released an official trailer for an indie coming-of-age film titled Katie Says Goodbye, which originally premiered at the Toronto Film Festival in 2016. It played at numerous festivals in late 2016 and 2017 but never found a distributor and never got a release. Katie Says Goodbye stars Olivia Cooke as a young woman from New Mexico who turns to small-time prostitution in order to fund her dream to move to San Francisco. However, she falls in love with a handsome mechanic messing up her plans. The film also stars Christopher Abbott, James Belushi, Keir Gilchrist, Chris Lowell, Mireille Enos, and Mary Steenburgen. This looks like a very cliche indie flick, unfortunately. ›››

    An Actor Prepares Trailer

“The only thing you have to do is make sure he gets there – clean, sober, and alive.” Gravitas Ventures has released an official trailer for an indie comedy titled An Actor Prepares, the latest from filmmaker Steve Clark (The Last International Playboy, Night Has Settled). It Jeremy Irons as an aging, drunk, famous actor named Atticus Smith who has a heartattack just before his daughter’s wedding. Jack Huston co-stars as his son, and the cast includes Ben Schwartz, Mamie Gummer, Matthew Modine, Frankie Faison, Whitney Goin, Will Patton, and Megalyn Echikunwoke. • New Trailer for Crime Thriller 'Reprisal' with Frank Grillo & Bruce Willis

New Trailer for Crime Thriller 'Reprisal' with Frank Grillo & Bruce Willis

    Reprisal Trailer

“You want to talk with somebody, you talk with me!” Lionsgate Premiere has released an official trailer for a B-movie action crime thriller titled Reprisal. Don’t get too excited, even with these two action stars, this movie looks like shit. Surprise, surprise. There’s so many of these direct-to-the-bargain-big action being made movies recently, that it’s getting kind of annoying. Why!? Why keep making them? What’s the point? Who even watches these? Frank Grillo stars as a bank manager haunted by a violent incident in his past, who teams up with his ex-cop neighbor to go after the people behind it. Of course, they then mess with his family and he gets really upset. What an original idea… Ugh. Bruce Willis co-stars along with Johnathon Schaech, Olivia Culpo, Colin Egglesfield, Wass Stevens, and Natali Yura. This movie looks so bad. ›››

  • Are You One of Us? – New Promo Trailer for Fox's 'The Darkest Minds'

Are You One of Us? – New Promo Trailer for Fox's 'The Darkest Minds'

    The Darkest Minds Promo

“Are you one of us?” Fox has debuted an interesting promo trailer for their upcoming superpowers movie The Darkest Minds, hitting theaters in August this summer. This first trailer for this arrived in March, teasing an impressive film about kids with superpowers (who aren’t X-Men). This new trailer is more of a promo asking those who are “one of us” to join them. The Darkest Minds is set in a time when a disease kills 98% of America’s children, and the surviving 2% develop superpowers and are then placed in camps. A 16-year-old girl escapes and joins a group of other teens on the run. This stars Amandla Stenberg, Mandy Moore, Harris Dickinson, Wallace Langham, Golden Brooks, Mark O’Brien, Patrick Gibson, and Gwendoline Christie. This is a bit weird, especially since no one has any superpowers. Or do they..? ›››

  • Annecy 2018: Brazil's 'Tito and the Birds' is a Gorgeous, Anti-Fear Film

Annecy 2018: Brazil's 'Tito and the Birds' is a Gorgeous, Anti-Fear Film

    Tito and the Birds Review

Some animated films are made for kids. Some animated films are made for adults. But some animated films are made for audiences of all ages, for everyone to enjoy, and for everyone to appreciate and learn from. Tito and the Birds (Tito e os Pássaros) is one of these animated films made for audiences of all ages, and it’s an important film for the times we live in. Directed by three filmmakers – Gabriel Bitar, André Catoto, Gustavo Steinberg – the film comes from Brazil and is set in Brazil, telling the story of one young boy who saves the world. Not with any superpowers or clever tricks, but by using his brain, and by resisting the urge to cave to the paralyzing fear that pervades society these days. It’s a gorgeous film, both in the way it looks and its story, and one that I hope finds a global audience as it certainly deserves the attention and acclaim. ›››

  • New Trailer for Alice Rohrwacher's 'Happy as Lazzaro' from Cannes

New Trailer for Alice Rohrwacher's 'Happy as Lazzaro' from Cannes

    Happy as Lazzaro Trailer

“I’m calling about a missing boy. Someone important, a Marquis.” The Match Factory released a new trailer for the film Happy as Lazzaro, originally titled Lazzaro felice, the latest film made by acclaimed Italian filmmaker Alice Rohrwacher (Corpo Celeste, The Wonders). This premiered at the Cannes Film Festival this summer in competition, and it was highly regarded as one of the best of the festival, despite not winning any awards. It’s an odd, awkward film about a boy named Lazzaro who works as a farming peasant on a tobacco farm in Italy. About halfway through, the film jumps in time to the modern day where he ends up in a city searching for his friends and family. Adriano Tardiolo stars as Lazzaro, and the cast includes Luca Chikovani, Agnese Graziani, Alba Rohrwacher, Sergi López, Natalino Balasso, Tommaso Ragno, and Nicoletta Braschi. Expect to hear a lot more about this film by the end of the year, it’s going to be a favorite of many prominent critics. The new trailer below includes English subtitles, so give it a look. ›››

First Trailer for Steven Caple Jr.'s 'Creed II' Starring Michael B. Jordan

    Creed II Trailer

“You’ve got everything to lose, this guy’s got nothing to lose.” MGM/Warner Bros has finally debuted the first trailer for Creed II, the sequel to the critically acclaimed hit Creed, which started a new franchise in the Rocky Balboa world introducing us to Adonis Creed. Michael B. Jordan returns to play Adonis again, this time getting ready to fight an even more challenging adversary – Viktor Drago, the son of Ivan Drago. Romanian boxer Florian Munteanu plays Viktor, with the two iconic old dudes back in their original roles – Sylvester Stallone and Dolph Lundgren. Stallone, who produced the film, also co-wrote the script and has helped develop this sequel following Ryan Coogler’s film. The cast includes Tessa Thompson, Wood Harris, Russell Hornsby, Phylicia Rashad, & Andre Ward. This looks great! Which makes me happy. ›››
