Tiffany Haddish & Tika Sumpter in First Full Trailer for 'Nobody's Fool'

    Nobody's Fool Trailer

“If a man looks too good to be true – he is!!” Paramount has debuted the first official trailer for Nobody’s Fool, the new comedy from filmmaker Tyler Perry, something a bit different than his Madea films in the past. This wacky movie stars two of the most popular actresses – Tiffany Haddish and Tika Sumpter – as sisters. Tanya (Haddish) is finally released from prison and reunites with her sister Danica (Sumpter), who discovers she is in an online relationship with a man that may be “catfishing” her. The full ensemble cast includes Whoopi Goldberg, Missi Pyle, Courtney Henggeler, Omari Hardwick, Amber Riley, and Crystal Lee Brown. This looks about is absurd and slightly funny as you might expect from Tyler Perry, not really my cup of tea. Maybe some of you will be into seeing this just because of Haddish? Check this out. ›››

Watch: 80's Arcade Throwback Short Film 'Tank' from Stu Maschwitz

    Tank Short Film

Ready player one? Insert coin to play. This two-minute short film Tank is an exciting, nerdy throwback to 80’s arcade games and it’s a must watch for geeks everywhere. Tank is made by Red Giant’s Chief Creative Officer, Stu Maschwitz (@5tu), who wanted to make something to pay homage to vector arcade games of the 80’s – specifically Battlezone and Star Wars, though this definitely has a Tron vibe. This also features a totally rad electro score created by Ben Worley. This isn’t just all about the visuals – there’s a cool story to follow as well. Tank is a fun, homemade short film that is super geeky and yet isn’t worthless entertainment. This is why I love short films – they’re always so creatively unique and have something to say. Annecy 2018: 'On Happiness Road' is a Lovely Story About Happiness

    On Happiness Road

One important lesson we all learn in life is that happiness is an endless pursuit. There’s no such thing as a permanent state of happiness. But this is a hard lesson to learn, and something that takes years to discover, through trial & error, experience, and understanding. On Happiness Road is a lovely little animated film that addresses this very idea, taking us on a journey through past and present in the life of one woman from Taiwan. On Happiness Road is an autobiographical film made by Taiwanese animator/filmmaker Hsin-Yin Sung that is about her pursuit of happiness, and learning what exactly that means, how to get there, and that happiness is not forever, and is not something you can just obtain. It’s a very deeply personal film, but also a very meaningful and enjoyable, with a light touch that makes it that much more captivating to watch. ›››

First International Trailer for Oz Ensemble Comedy 'Ladies in Black'

    Ladies in Black Trailer

“You’re a clever girl – that’s the most wonderful thing in all creation.” Sony Australia has debuted the first official trailer for an ensemble comedy titled Ladies in Black, adapted from the popular book The Women in Black by Madeleine St John. The film is the latest directed by award-winning Aussie filmmaker Bruce Beresford (Driving Miss Daisy, Double Jeopardy, Mao’s Last Dancer), and it’s an “alluring and tender-hearted comedy drama about the lives of a group of department store employees in 1959 Sydney.” The film’s cast includes Julia Ormond, Angourie Rice, Rachael Taylor, Ryan Corr, Vincent Perez, Alison McGirr, Susie Porter, Shane Jacobson, and Noni Hazlehurst. This looks like a spunky, entertaining film about Australian women learning to stand up for themselves and be strong & independent. Watch out. ›››

    The Head Vanishes Short Film

“Today’s my birthday, and I’m treating myself to a trip to the seaside, as I do every year.” In honor of the Annecy Film Festival for animation this week, I’m featuring a few good animated short films that are worth watching. This one actually won Best Short Film at Annecy back in 2016, and it’s finally available online for viewing. The Head Vanishes is the latest short made by award-winning animation filmmaker Franck Dion, inspired by his great-grandmother, and the challenges of dementia. “The Head Vanishes is about the imagination of someone who is interpreting the world around her. It’s an evanescent vision of things, just like Jacqueline’s memory.” The animation style is a bit clunky, but it’s a heartfelt story. Watch in full below. ›››

  • Official US Trailer for Pascal Laugier's Horror 'Incident in a Ghostland'

Official US Trailer for Pascal Laugier's Horror 'Incident in a Ghostland'

    Incident in a Ghostland Trailer

“I never should’ve stayed in that house.” Vertical Entertainment has debuted a new official US trailer for the supernatural horror thriller Incident in a Ghostland, the latest from French director Pascal Laugier (Martyrs, The Tall Man). We posted an international trailer for this earlier in the year. The story is about a house where a woman had to fend off intruders to save her daughters. Years later, the two of them grow up with completely different personalities, still traumatized by the events. When they all reunite at the house once again, strange events began to occur. The horror film stars Crystal Reed, Taylor Hickson, Rob Archer, Emilia Jones, Adam Hurtig, Anastasia Phillips, Mylène Farmer, and Alicia Johnston. Unfortunately this still looks as mediocre as it did in the first trailer, only for the most diehard horror fans. ›››

  • Annecy 2018: 'Seder-Masochism' is Animated Judaism Musical Hilarity

Annecy 2018: 'Seder-Masochism' is Animated Judaism Musical Hilarity

    Seder-Masochism Review

What have I stumbled upon?! What is this genius work of cinema?! Seder-Masochism is the new film by filmmaker Nina Paley (of Sita Sings the Blues previously) and it’s totally amazing, brilliant, and hilarious. It’s very hard to describe the film, but I will try. Seder-Masochism is an animated exploration of Judaism, featuring Moses and a few other characters singing and dancing to various pre-existing songs (of all kinds). I could almost describe this as fun animated YouTube short extended to a full-length feature, but it deserves more credit than that. It’s also a personal film for Nina, as she interviews her father about her upbringing and his views on Judaism, while taking us on a journey into the history of Moses and the Book of Exodus. ›››

  • New Trailer for 4K Restoration of Mel Brooks' Classic 'The Producers'

New Trailer for 4K Restoration of Mel Brooks' Classic 'The Producers'

    The Producers Trailer

“We’ve got to find the worst play ever written!” Studiocanal UK has debuted a short new trailer for a 4K restoration re-release of Mel Brooks’ original comedy classic The Producers, which first hit cinemas in 1968. They’re celebrating the film’s 50th anniversary, and putting it back in theaters for one day only this August (in the UK). There’s no US plans yet, but we expect to hear something soon. Brooks’ The Producers is about two producers who decide to make a flop Broadway show since it will make them more money than a hit. They go on to produce the hilarious show Springtime for Hitler. Gene Wilder stars in the film, along with Zero Mostel as his producer cohort, with Kenneth Mars, Dick Shawn, Lorenzo St. DuBois, Lee Meredith, Estelle Winwood, Christopher Hewett, and Andreas Voutsinas. Jawohl! This is a major comedy classic and a film that everyone should have seen by now anyway. If not, now is your chance. Enjoy. ›››

  • Official US Trailer for Jordana Spiro's Sundance Film 'Night Comes On'

Official US Trailer for Jordana Spiro's Sundance Film 'Night Comes On'

    Night Comes On Trailer

“You squeeze your eyes tight enough, you can almost see the sun.” Samuel Goldwyn Films has released an official trailer for an indie drama titled Night Comes On, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival this year in the Next category. Night Comes On is the feature directorial debut of an actress named Jordana Spiro, and tells the story of a young woman released from juvenile detention on the eve of her 18th birthday. Haunted by her past, Angel embarks on a journey with her 10 year-old sister to avenge her mother’s death. Dominique Fishback (from “The Deuce”, “Show Me a Hero”) stars as Angel, and Tatum Marilyn Hall as her sister, with a cast including Journee Brown, Cymbal Byrd, and Max Casella. This looks like an excellent film, and as many of the critics’ quotes stated, a very impressive directorial debut. Worth a watch. ›››
