True History of the Kelly Gang Trailer

“Be who you were meant to be!” Memento International has debuted the first official trailer for Australian indie drama True History of the Kelly Gang, which just premiered at the Toronto Film Festival a few months ago. This is the latest feature from Australian filmmaker Justin Kurzel, of The Snowtown Murders and Macbeth previously, and it’s a re-envisioning of the tall tale of an Australian bush-ranger named Ned Kelly and his gang as they flee from the authorities during the 1870s. If you’re from Australia, you probably know the story, but if not – this flips the whole story on its head anyway. “Youth and tragedy collide in the Kelly Gang, and at the beating heart of this tale is the fractured and powerful love story between a mother and a son.” Starring George MacKay as Ned Kelly, Essie Davis as his mother Ellen Kelly, plus Russell Crowe, Nicholas Hoult, Thomasin McKenzie, Sean Keenan, Earl Cave, Orlando Schwerdt, and Charlie Hunnam. This certainly looks very stylish and unique – you might want to keep an eye on this one. ›››

  • Official Australian Trailer for Beloved French Film ‘The Extraordinary’

Official Australian Trailer for Beloved French Film ‘The Extraordinary’

    The Extraordinary Trailer

“His organization responds to acute needs.” Madman Films out of Australia has debuted an official English-subtitled trailer for the acclaimed, beloved French drama (originally) called The Specials. Apparently for the Australian release they’ve retitled it to The Extraordinary, which sort of still works I guess, but okay whatever. No need for a new name. This is from the same two talented French filmmakers who made The Intouchables, and this time they tell the story of two based-on-real-people social support caregivers for autistic children and teens. Vincent Cassel and Reda Kateb star as two of the most caring, loving guys you’ll ever meet – as Bruno and Malik. The full cast also includes Hélène Vincent, Bryan Mialoundama. Alban Ivanov, Benjamin Lesieur, Marco Locatelli, and Catherine Mouchet. It’s a wonderful film. I saw it at the San Sebastian Film Festival and loved everything about it – read my glowing review. It truly is a “special”, warm, inspiring feature. The score you hear in this is by Grandbrothers and it’s also in the film. ›››

Official Trailer for Documentary ‘Afterward’ About Israel & Palestine

    Afterward Doc Trailer

“The enemy is the occupation.” Abramorama has debuted an official trailer for an indie documentary titled Afterward, marking the feature directorial debut of Israeli filmmaker Ofra Bloch. This deeply personal film is about the psychological barriers preventing peace in the Middle East. Bloch forces herself to confront her demons in a journey that takes her to Germany, Israel and Palestine. Set against the current wave of fascism and anti-Semitism sweeping the globe, Afterward delves into the secret wounds carried by victims as well as victimizers, through testimonies ranging from the horrifying to hopeful. Not just an examination of the complexities of the Israel-Palestine conflict, but how traumatizing and disruptive the Holocaust was to everyone living there. “Movingly illustrates the myriad ways in which the past haunts the present and the healing power of communication.” Looks like a compelling doc that digs quite deep into the power of guilt. ›››

    Judy & Punch Trailer

“Something is very wrong with this town!” Madman Films in Australia has unveiled another official trailer for the indie dark comedy Judy & Punch, the latest Blue Tongue Films production (run by Nash & Joel Edgerton). Written and directed by Australian actress Mirrah Foulkes, her feature directorial debut, the film originally premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. It also played at the Sydney, Bucheon, New Zealand, Melbourne, London, and Sitges Film Festivals. Set in the old town of Seaside (nowhere near the sea), puppeteers Judy and Punch are trying to resurrect their marionette show in an an anarchic town on the brink of mob rule. It’s a clever commentary on how women are treated, and how we can do better. Starring Mia Wasikowska as Judy & Damon Herriman as Punch, along with Benedict Hardie, Eddie Baroo, Tom Budge, Virginia Gay, and Don Bridges. It’s the best trailer for this weird, twisted film yet. ›››

Review: Rian Johnson’s ‘Knives Out’ is a Razor-Sharp Murder Mystery

    Knives Out Review

Perhaps best known as the writer & director of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, filmmaker Rian Johnson got his big start in 2005 with the neo-noir mystery Brick. A hard-boiled detective story in the vein of The Maltese Falcon, Brick won a Special Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival and paved the way for his sophomore effort, 2008’s The Brothers Bloom. The caper comedy-drama, about two sibling con artists, was inspired by Bogdanovich’s Paper Moon and David Mamet’s heist-thriller, House of Games. For his third film, Johnson continued taking innovative approaches to familiar genres with the twisty, multi-layered 2012 sci-fi Looper. Now, the filmmaker is paying homage to the works of Agatha Christie with Knives Out, a black comedy whodunnit influenced by classic mystery films like Murder on the Orient Express and The Mirror Crack’d. ›››

  • First Trailer for Netflix’s ‘Bikram: Yogi, Guru, Predator’ Documentary

First Trailer for Netflix’s ‘Bikram: Yogi, Guru, Predator’ Documentary

    Bikram: Yogi, Guru, Predator Trailer

“Bikram was so good at getting inside our brains.” Netflix has unveiled an official trailer for a documentary titled Bikram: Yogi, Guru, Predator, the latest feature made by Oscar-winning filmmaker Eva Orner (The Network, Chasing Asylum, Out of Iraq). The film tells the controversial story of the famous founder of “hot yoga” named Bikram Choudhury, who immigrated to Los Angeles in the early 70s and made tons of money with his fitness empire. The doc traces his rise to glory in the 1970s to his disgrace in accusations of rape and sexual harassment in more recent years. Bikram: Yogi, Guru, Predator, a Netflix original, shines a light on the stories of the women who took him down and explores the contradiction of how this healing discipline could simultaneously help and hurt so many. This doc definitely fits into the Netflix canon with all their other searing, jaw-dropping, fascinating films about crazy minds of manipulative men. Yoga madness. ›››
