New UK Trailer for Restored Re-Release of 80s LGBTQ Film ‘Buddies’

    Buddies Trailer

“Possibly the most important film you’ve never heard of.” Peccadillo Pics in the UK has released an official trailer for a digitally restored re-release of 1985 film titled Buddies, written and directed by the late Arthur J. Bressan. Buddies was the first feature-length drama about AIDS when it was released. When 25 year-old David (David Schachter) volunteers to be a “buddy” to an AIDS patient the community center assigns him to Robert (Geoff Edholm), a 32 year-old politically impassioned gay California gardener abandoned by his friends and lovers. “Bressan did a simple yet radical thing: He told the story of one such friendship and, in the process, made the first feature-length drama about AIDS. Shot on 16mm film in nine days, [it] earned respectful reviews and a few festival prizes, but has faded from view over the years. Bressan died of AIDS in July 1987; now, thanks to the efforts of his sister Roe Bressan and film historian Jenni Olson, Buddies has received a 2K restoration… Thirty-three years after its initial release, the film remains as affecting as ever.” ›››

The 25 Best Films of the Decade Video

“Are you ready?” It’s the end of another decade! With the 2010s winding down, and the 2020s about to kick off, everyone is looking back at the last 10 years and all the films that are truly worth of being singled out and highlighted as the best of the best. Cinephile and writer Milton Lawson has edited a video called The 25 Best Films of the Decade, counting down his 25 favorites. It’s similar to David Ehrlich’s annual Best of the Year video countdown, with a fine selection of music playing over top of the films as it goes through each of them one-by-one. Lawson’s intro: “I edited a supercut video celebrating my favorite films of the decade. Turn up the volume & enjoy.” His music selection is just as lovely as the films (and footage) he’s picked, and it’s a great reminder there’s always wonderful films & music to discover. Dive right in and have a good time. ›››

“We really don’t know each other at all…” Signature Entertainment in the UK has unveiled an official trailer for an indie romantic comedy titled 10 Things We Should Do Before We Break Up. The title is a direct reference to a part of the plot, but it’s also a bit too similar to 10 Things I Hate About You to be considered original. Christina Ricci plays Abigail, a single mother of two who meets a man named Ben at a bar. They jokingly come up with a list of things to do before their imagined breakup, knowingly full well they’ll never even start a relationship. But when the joke turns in to a one-night stand that brings a pregnancy, things gets a whole lot more complicated. Get Gone Trailer

“If you create a beast, you best learn how to ride it.” 1091 Media has debuted an official trailer for a horror thriller titled Get Gone, which premiered at the Action On Film Festival earlier this year. The film’s selling point is this creepy mask, which seems to be a part of the killers’ costume. A hoax-busting group goes on a team-building retreat to Whiskey Flats, Oregon, and runs into trouble as they cross paths with an invasive drilling company that is warring with a very private family. Their retreat takes a turn after the group runs into trouble with them. The film stars horror film legend Lin Shaye, plus Weston Cage Coppola (Nicolas Cage’s son), Robert Miano, Bradley Stryker, and Silvia Spross. Looks super bizarre and extra strange. ›››

New Trailer for James Ivory’s ‘The Europeans’ Restoration Re-Release

    The Europeans Trailer

“I want you to make me a promise: not to get excited.” Cohen Media Group & Cohen Film Collection have debuted an official trailer for a 2K restoration re-release of the classic 1979 film The Europeans, the first in James Ivory’s Henry James triptych. Set in the fall of 1850, a few miles outside Boston. The household of the dour Mr. Wentworth receives two unannounced visitors from Europe, Eugenia and Felix, the daughter and son of his half sister. The film deals with “the social and moral clashes between the New World and the Continent.” This first premiered at the 1979 Cannes Film Festival, and went on to earn one Academy Award nomination for Best Costume Design. The costume design and its production design “solidified the ‘state-of-the-art’ (and impeccably researched) period trappings that have since become synonymous with Merchant Ivory.” Starring Lee Remick, Robin Ellis, Wesley Addy, and Tim Choate. Pizza Time Short Film

“Round 3, fight!” It’s Pizza Time! Order yourself a pie and enjoy this action comedy short film. Pizza Time is the latest short made by filmmaking collective Maker Table, based out of Dallas, TX – we also featured their horror short Monitor last year. This incredibly fun 80s throwback is about a legendary pizza delivery driver, who upon arriving at his destination, stumbles into the scene of a hitman’s contract killing. Will he make it out alive or not? Starring Eric Jacobus and Ben Worley (who also made the music for the short). Director Ryan Polly explains: “I made the film as an homage to Jackie Chan and great action-comedy films of the 80’s.” I dig the fight choreography in this, and the arcade machines, good times. • Fun First Trailer for Action Comedy ‘Free Guy’ Starring Ryan Reynolds

Fun First Trailer for Action Comedy ‘Free Guy’ Starring Ryan Reynolds

    Free Guy Trailer

“Guy – this world, it’s a video game. And it’s full of bad guys… We need you to be the Good Guy.” Fox has debuted the first full-length trailer for Free Guy, the video game action comedy concept conceived by Matt Lieberman, and directed by Shawn Levy (of Night at the Museum Date Night, Real Steel, The Internship). Ryan Reynolds stars as “Guy”, just a regular guy who one day learns that he’s actually an NPC (meaning Non-Player Character – an automated character mostly in the background of video games) until he suddenly decides to take over and become the hero of the game. This is definitely inspired by the game Overwatch, plus it has a bit of a live-action Wreck-It Ralph feel, and looks like a seriously fun time. Also starring Jodie Comer, Joe Keery, Lil Rel Howery, Utkarsh Ambudkar, and Taika Waititi. This looks like it could turn out extra dumb, or incredibly entertaining, and so far I’m feeling like it will be the latter. Jump right in. ›››

    The Corrupted Trailer

The crime thriller is set in London, specifically in East London and Stratford which has been redeveloped. Sam Claflin plays Liam, an ex-con trying to win back the love & trust of his family. His drive for redemption will see him caught up in a web of conspiracy, crime, and corruption, when he gets mixed up with a dangerous property developer. The full cast includes Timothy Spall, Hugh Bonneville, Charlie Murphy, Naomi Ackie, Joe Claflin (Sam’s real brother who plays his brother in the film), and Noel Clarke. Looks like yet another crime film where a guy fresh out of prison gets caught up with all the wrong guys at the wrong time. ›››

IDFA Review: ‘The Australian Dream’ Powerfully Confronts with Truth

    The Australian Dream Review

Wow wow wow. What a film…! I don’t know too much about Australia’s history nor do I follow the country’s current events, so going into this film I wasn’t sure what to expect. I didn’t know anything about the story it was telling. And there’s nothing like hearing a story for the first time: learning about all that has happened, the ups and downs, and the truths about what is really going on. The Australian Dream is a wonderful doc that focuses on an Australian sportsman named Adam Goodes. He plays the rugby-meets-cricket sport called “Australian rules football“, run by the AFL (the “Australian Football League”), and he is descendant from Aboriginal natives. The film tells his story and in doing so confronts latent Australian racism head on. And man oh man is it an absolutely fantastic film. I was moved to tears by this, multiple times near the end. ›››
