    Entangled Trailer

“I’m tired of being in my head… I just want to feel desirable again.” Samuel Goldwyn Films has debuted an official US trailer for Entangled, a new drama marking the feature directorial debut of Milena Lurie. This also went under the working title of Little Faith while in production. The film stars French actress Ana Girardot as Marin, a young French woman living in New York City after a tragedy. She soon finds herself disconnected from her body, boyfriend, and her family. During a tumultuous weekend, highlighted by many chance encounters with a stranger and an ex-boyfriend, she starts to find her voice. Also starring Grégory Fitoussi, Jonathan Cake, Jay Wilkison, Lucy Walters, and Katerina Tannenbaum. This looks like a very sensual, intimate self-realization drama with a strong lead performance. Check out the trailer below. ›››

  • First Trailer for ‘Blue’ Dramedy by Gabriela Ledesma & Callie Schuttera

First Trailer for ‘Blue’ Dramedy by Gabriela Ledesma & Callie Schuttera

    Blue Film Trailer

“You’ve been a little… disconnected lately.” Gravitas Ventures has debuted an official trailer for a film titled Blue, an indie dramedy made by wife and wife duo Gabriela Ledesma and Callie Schuttera. The two co-wrote the screenplay together, while Ledesma directs and Schuttera plays a character based on Gabriela’s own experiences earlier in life. Based on true events, a young woman struggles to piece her world together after a botched suicide attempt. The film has a bit of dark humor, presenting a raw and honest look at the struggles of life and how hard it is to keep it all together. Starring Callie Schuttera, Shaw Jones, Judith Scott, Laura Harrison, Chelsea Lopez, Johnny Loquasto, Jennifer Daly, Todd Stroik, Aubrey Manning, and Vanessa Sawson. This probably won’t connect with everyone but it’s worth a look anyway. ›››

  • SSIFF Review: Tim Roth Sifts Through the Past in ‘The Song of Names’

SSIFF Review: Tim Roth Sifts Through the Past in ‘The Song of Names’

    The Song of Names Review

Music is a remarkably powerful stimulus, capable of transmitting the greatest emotions and stories across space and time. A number of excellent films this year have shown the power of music (most notably Portrait of a Lady on Fireread our review). Another one joining that list is The Song of Names, which is indeed about “The Song of Names”, as the title indicates, from World War II. The film is described as an “emotional detective story spread over two continents and a half century”, though that’s not really the best description for it. The Song of Names is a moving Holocaust memorial film about a Polish Jewish violin prodigy named Dovidl who suddenly disappears in London just before a major concert, then is found again 35 years later by his British friend, living a much quieter life. It’s good! But it’s mostly bogged down by formulaic storytelling. ›››

  • Official US Trailer for Biopic Doc ‘The Ice King’ About a Figure Skater

Official US Trailer for Biopic Doc ‘The Ice King’ About a Figure Skater

    The Ice King Trailer

“All he had were his skates and his talent.” Film Movement has debuted an official US trailer for the film The Ice King, a biopic documentary about a figure skater named John Curry. James Erskine’s The Ice King is the searing documentary of a lost cultural icon, a story of art, sport, sexuality, and rebellion. With incredible unseen footage of some of his most remarkable performances and with access to Curry’s letters, archive interviews, and interviews with his family, friends and collaborators, this is a portrait of the man who turned ice-skating from a dated sport into an exalted art form. Watch any figure skating and it falls into two possible camps: before and after John Curry. He became the first openly gay Olympian at a time when homosexuality was barely legal. From bullying and prejudice, to relief in the gay underworld, to his untimely death from AIDS, Curry’s story dovetails with the experiences of a generation. This has taken over a year since its initial debut to finally arrive in America, but it will be available to watch this October. Check it out. ›››

  • Kevin Makely & Bruce Dern in Trailer for Outlaws Western ‘Badland’

Kevin Makely & Bruce Dern in Trailer for Outlaws Western ‘Badland’

    Badland Trailer

“I always knew my sins would catch up to me.” Cinedigm has debuted a trailer for an indie western titled Badland, not to be confused with Terrence Malick’s classic Badlands. This Wild West Badland film is the latest from writer/director Justin Lee (Alone We Fight, Swell) and is arriving November. Set after the Civil War, detective Matthias Breecher is hired to track down the worst of the Confederate war criminals. As he roams the Old West seeking justice, his resolve is tested when he meets a determined pioneer woman who is far more than she seems. Starring an impressive cast: Kevin Makely, Mira Sorvino, Wes Studi, Trace Adkins, Bruce Dern, Jeff Fahey, Tony Todd, Amanda Wyss, Ryan Kelley, and James Russo. This does not look good, which is no surprise considering we’ve never heard of it before. Right in the bargain bin. ›››

Roaring Second Trailer for Mangold’s ‘Ford v. Ferrari’ Racing Movie

    Ford v Ferrari Trailer

“Ford hates guys like us, because we’re different.” 20th Century Fox has launched the second official trailer for Ford v. Ferrari, the latest from James Mangold (who last made the kick ass Logan in 2017). This premiered at the Telluride and Toronto Film Festivals to very positive reviews aplenty, calling it a “visual and sonic spectacle”. The film follows an eccentric, determined team of American engineers and designers, led by automotive visionary Carroll Shelby and British driver Ken Miles, who are sent by Henry Ford II and Lee Iacocca with the mission of building from scratch an entirely new car with the potential to finally defeat the perennially dominant Ferrari at the 1966 24 Hours of Le Mans race in France. Starring Matt Damon as Shelby, Christian Bale as Miles, with Tracy Letts as Henry Ford II, plus an ensemble cast including Jon Bernthal, Caitriona Balfe, Josh Lucas, Noah Jupe, JJ Feild, Ray McKinnon, and Remo Girone as Enzo Ferrari. All the early festival buzz has been great so far, I can’t wait to catch up with this one soon. ›››

  • An Open Letter About the Harmfulness of Embargoes at Film Festivals

An Open Letter About the Harmfulness of Embargoes at Film Festivals

    Venice Film Festival

After being threatened by the Venice Film Festival to have my press badge removed because I refused to follow the nonsensical embargo rules, I decided to publish this letter. When you experience injustice, when you experience oppression in the world, you must speak up. And I am doing so by writing this. I expect many of my colleagues and other critics will disagree with me and refute my claims, which is of course their right. But throughout the 13+ years I have been running this website, I have often seen jealousy and fear manifest itself as control and dominance and this is another example. I was told that others “complained” about my tweets, and so I was forced to fall in line and do what they demanded. I resist. I refuse. It is time to change this rule at festivals. Once a film screens, we should be free to talk about it. My full letter below. ›››

  • First Trailer for Short Film ‘A Million Eyes’ About a Young Photographer

First Trailer for Short Film ‘A Million Eyes’ About a Young Photographer

    A Million Eyes Trailer

“Do you know what photography means?” “When you break it down, it really means drawing with light.” An official trailer has debuted for a short film called A Million Eyes, the latest made by British filmmaker Richard Raymond (Desert Dancer). This first premiered at the HollyShorts Film Festival and is stopping by the Raindance Film Festival in the UK next this month. The short is about a gifted young photographer, grappling with his mother’s alcoholism, who sets out to capture something he loves. This stars Elijah M. Cooper as Leroy, with Joe Morton and Katie Lowes. As a photographer myself, I adore this trailer and the way it speaks so lovingly about photographer and the power it has to capture “something you love”. Hopefully this short will end up online soon, as I’d love for everyone to take just a moment and watch this. ›››

  • Todd Phillips’ ‘Joker’ Wins Golden Lion at the 2019 Venice Film Festival

Todd Phillips’ ‘Joker’ Wins Golden Lion at the 2019 Venice Film Festival

    Joker Venice

Send in the clowns. The 76th Venice Film Festival wrapped up this weekend on the Lido, and the awards were handed out. The top prize at Venice is a Golden Lion (in honor of the iconic lion that is the symbol of the city) and it’s one of the greatest achievements in cinema, along with the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival. This year’s big winner is Joker, the dark, gnarly, unlike-anything-before-it audacious comic book movie starring Joaquin Phoenix as the green-haired Gotham City villain. Other winners include an Italian actor named Luca Marinelli, who stars in the title role of Martin Eden, a major film which many critics loved here. And the young actor from the Australian film Babyteeth, named Toby Wallace, even though his co-star Eliza Scanlen didn’t win (though she deserved to share this with him). All the winners are amusing and it makes me laugh because they’re bold choices. The full list of Venezia 76 winners can be found below. ›››
