    The Package Trailer

“I was just supposed to be camping!” Netflix has debuted an official trailer for an indie comedy titled The Package, the latest from Funny or Die filmmaker Jake Szymanski (Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates). The wacky, stupid comedy is about a group of teenage friends who go on a spring break camping trip, but an accident causes them to change their plans in hopes of saving their friend. Yeah, it’s dumb and made for teenagers to get drunk and laugh at. The full cast for this includes Daniel Doheny, Geraldine Viswanathan, Sadie Calvano, Luke Spencer Roberts, Eduardo Franco, Michael Eklund, Gary Jones, Alexander Calvert, Sugar Lyn Beard, and Blake Anderson. These kind of dumb comedies are not for me, way too goofy and stupid and just not funny. But if you’re into this kind of humor, then have fun. ›››

  • Saoirse Ronan & Margot Robbie in First 'Mary Queen of Scots' Trailer

    Mary Queen of Scots Trailer

“Do not play into their hands – our hatred is precisely what they hope for…!” Focus Features has finally debuted the first official trailer for period drama Mary Queen of Scots, telling the story of the turbulent life of the charismatic Mary Stuart. She was Queen of France at 16 and then widowed at 18, deciding to return home to Scotland without a husband, where she has to carefully compete with her sister – Queen Elizabeth I of England, ruling over Scotland and England at the time. Saoirse Ronan plays Mary, Margot Robbie plays Elizabeth, with a superb ensemble cast including Gemma Chan, Guy Pearce, Joe Alwyn, David Tennant, Jack Lowden, Brendan Coyle, Martin Compston, Ismael Cruz Cordova, and James McArdle. This is quite a powerful first trailer, pitting these two fierce women against each other. They both look to be giving extraordinary performances, which will make for a very exciting film to watch. Fire this up. ›››

  • Review: Thurber's 'Skyscraper' is a Towering Achievement in Absurdity

    Skyscraper Review

With box office receipts exceeding $3 billion around the world so far, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has solidified himself as a global box office powerhouse. In recent years, the wrestler-turned-actor has earned a reputation as the hardest working man in Hollywood, starring in hits like Central Intelligence, Moana, The Fate of the Furious, and Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle from last fall. Even his misses are still massive successes — both San Andreas and Rampage earned over $400 million worldwide, despite underwhelming critical response. Now, only three months after his last theatrical release, Johnson continues his shock-and-awe campaign for box office supremacy with the action-packed, Hong Kong-set skyscraper disaster film Skyscraper; further testament to the movie star’s enduring commitment to quantity over quality. ›››

  • Official Trailer for Horror 'Don't Leave Home' About a Painter in Ireland

    Don't Leave Home Trailer

“You might hear some strange things… don’t pay any attention to it.” Cranked Up Films has released an official US trailer for an indie horror thriller titled Don’t Leave Home, the latest feature from filmmaker Michael Tully (Cocaine Angel, Septien, Ping Pong Summer). This premiered at the SXSW Film Festival and it also played at the Sarasota, Montclair, and Galway Film Festivals. Don’t Leave Home is about an American artist’s obsession with a disturbing urban legend that takes her to an investigation of the story’s origins at the crumbling estate of a reclusive painter in Ireland. It’s being called “Get Out with Catholic guilt in the Irish countryside” and a film that proves “not all mysteries should be solved.” The film’s cast includes Anna Margaret Hollyman, Lalor Roddy, Helena Bereen, David McSavage, and Karrie Cox. I like all the shots of the animals creepily staring at her. The film looks quite good, I will admit, and fairly creepy. ›››

KVIFF Ruminations: A World of Choices in Making & Watching Films

    Karlovy Vary Film Festival

“We are our choices.” -Jean-Paul Sartre. Life is all about choices. The choices we make, or that we don’t make, in small decisions, in big decisions. Everything is about these choices and every choice we make, even subconsciously, leads us down one path or another. We can’t go back, but we can continue to be aware and learn what influences us to make decisions. This is an endless philosophical discussion with no conclusion, but the concept of “choices” has been on my mind a lot at film festivals – ever since a discussion I had with my friend & fellow critic Pamela Jahn at the Cannes Film Festival. Then it continued while I was at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival in the Czech Republic. I chose to go to this festival because I enjoy it, and I really want to catch up with and see more films. I’m so happy I went to this festival, and strangely enough even though a number of my friends were also there we never ended up at the same screenings. This isn’t uncommon at film festivals, but it did make me think more about the choices we make – especially at fests. ›››

  • Official Trailer for Netflix Romantic Comedy 'Sierra Burgess Is a Loser'

Official Trailer for Netflix Romantic Comedy 'Sierra Burgess Is a Loser'

Sierra Burgess Is a Loser Trailer

“Do you think you could like me?” Netflix has debuted an official trailer for an indie romantic comedy titled Sierra Burgess Is a Loser, another reinvention of the romantic comedy play Cyrano de Bergerac (this isn’t the only film based on that play this year – there is also the British film Old Boys). Shannon Purser stars as Sierra, the one from the title of the film, who is very intelligent but not very pretty by high school standards. A case of mistaken identity results in unexpected romance when the most popular girl in high school and the biggest loser must come together to win over their crushes. Also starring RJ Cyler, Noah Centineo, Chrissy Metz, Alan Ruck, and Lea Thompson. This actually looks like a cute & honest film. ›››

Richard Sommer in First Trailer for Crime Drama 'A Crooked Somebody'

    A Crooked Somebody Trailer

“Think about the opportunity you’re sitting on here.” Vertical Entertainment has released an official trailer for an indie crime drama titled A Crooked Somebody, the latest film from director Trevor White (Jamesy Boy). This film originally premiered back at the Los Angeles Film Festival in 2017, but is only now getting a release this fall. A Crooked Somebody stars Richard Sommer as a man whose father was a minister, now working as a cheesy spirit medium. But one day he’s kidnapped and realizes there’s an opportunity: he sets out to become a celebrity TV psychic by solving the mystery of a high-profile crime in the national spotlight. The cast includes Clifton Collins Jr., Amanda Crew, Ed Harris, Gillian Vigman, Amy Madigan, Randee Heller, and Joanne Froggatt. This looks fun and twisted and interesting, maybe worth a watch. ›››

  • First Trailer for 'Colette' Staring Keira Knightley as a Talented Author

First Trailer for 'Colette' Staring Keira Knightley as a Talented Author

    Colette Trailer

“Since when you have considered scandal to be a bad thing.” Bleecker Street Films has released the first official trailer for the indie drama Colette, which first premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. Colette is the latest film from filmmaker Wash Westmoreland (Quinceañera, Still Alice) and it stars Keira Knightley as a talented author. She marries a successful Parisian writer, who asks her to help ghost write for him. The novel she writes becomes a huge success, but she struggles to maintain her name known as the original writer, fighting against gender norms and stereotypes. The full cast includes Dominic West, Eleanor Tomlinson, Fiona Shaw, Ray Panthaki, Aiysha Hart, Denise Gough, Robert Pugh, and Masayoshi Haneda. This looks like an empowering story of feminism and sexuality, for sure. Take a look. ›››

Official Trailer for Sony's 'Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween' Sequel

    Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween Trailer

“You discovered a walking, talking dummy and you didn’t tell me?!” Sony Pictures has debuted the first trailer for horror comedy sequel Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween, based on R.L. Stine’s book series known as Goosebumps. This is the follow-up to the 2015 live-action Goosebumps movie that didn’t get great reviews, and it looks like it’s even worse. They decided not to bring back Jack Black as R.L. Stine (aside from his voice), and instead they’re telling another CGI-filled haunted story this time around. The ensemble cast of Goosebumps 2 includes Ken Jeong, Wendi Mclendon-Covey, Chris Parnell, Madison Iseman, Ben O’Brien, Caleel Harris, Jeremy Ray Taylor, and Jack Black as the voice of Slappy. Others from the first movie might appear as well, but are not confirmed yet. This doesn’t look like it will impress anyone. ›››

  • Meet a Spoiled Pug in First Trailer for 'Patrick' with Beattie Edmondson

Meet a Spoiled Pug in First Trailer for 'Patrick' with Beattie Edmondson

    Patrick Trailer

“Don’t give up on him too easily. He’s quite a cute little fellow, isn’t he?” A new official trailer has debuted for a fun indie comedy titled Patrick, about a spoiled pug named Patrick who gets bequeathed to a young woman who is having some typical troubles in her life. As expected, the challenging pup provides some good laughs and plenty of pain, but he also helps her get back on track – with falling in love. Aw, how romantic, right? Beattie Edmondson stars as Sarah, and the cast includes Ed Skrein, Emilia Jones, Jennifer Saunders, Meera Syal, Gemma Jones, Emily Atack, Cherie Lunghi, and Peter Davison. This looks even worse than Dog Days, and that’s a shame since lovable dog movies should be better than this. Oh well. ›››
