Telluride 2016: Barry Jenkins' 'Moonlight' is Stellar Cinematic Beauty

    Moonlight Review

“At some point you gotta decide for yourself who you gunna be. Can’t let nobody make that decision for you.” Barry Jenkins’ new film Moonlight is an intimate portrait of black youth, examining the balance of masculinity and individuality in a community that shuns homosexuality. Writer/director Barry Jenkins has made a masterful film that is an exceptional work of cinematic beauty, telling a vital story of humanity and honesty. It’s a unique, singular work that stands out in its style and atmosphere, and in the way Jenkins holds back on what he shows, building the film around his very impressive actors and the emotions that life makes us feel. It’s an immensely moving cinematic story of truth, and demands our respect and admiration. ›››

Telluride 2016: Damien Chazelle's 'La La Land' is Musical Perfection

    La La Land

“Is this the start of something wonderful? Or one more dream that I cannot make true.” I’m on cloud nine. Damien Chazelle is such a remarkable storyteller and talented filmmaker, and he’s made his masterpiece. La La Land is musical perfection, an exhilarating and emotional voyage through time, deep into music and cinema. This is definitely one of those movies they don’t make anymore, he made one anyway, and it’s so much more. La La Land is a love letter to jazz, it’s a love letter to cinema, it’s a love letter to dancing, it’s a love letter to Los Angeles, it’s a love letter to having hope, it’s a love letter to dreams. It will sweep you off your feet, possibly break your heart, but will remind you of all the audacious joy to be found in this world. ›››

Official US Trailer for Asghar Farhadi's Latest Drama 'The Salesman'

    The Salesman Trailer

“What got into you?” Cohen Media has debuted the official US trailer for Asghar Farhadi’s latest film, a drama called The Salesman, which first premiered at the Cannes Film Festival a few months ago. The title is in reference to many aspects of the plot, but also specifically Arthur Miller’s play “Death of a Salesman” which is being performed on stage in the film. That performance is the framework of the film, which actually tells the story of a couple whose relationship begins to turn sour after an incident with his wife home alone. Shahab Hosseini and Taraneh Alidoosti star. I saw this in Cannes and enjoyed it, saying in my review it’s “a thoroughly engaging morality tale that proves once again just how talented of a storyteller Farhadi is.” ›››

Watch This: Comedic Short 'Life's a Bitch' Directed by François Jaros

    Life's a Bitch Short Film

Life’s a bitch. Yes it is. This amusing must see short film is from French director François Jaros and it first premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and Telluride Film Festival in 2014. It’s a comedic look at how great and how terrible life is, covering all the ups and downs of one man’s adulthood in just over 5 minutes. Life’s a Bitch isn’t the most creative short film I’ve ever seen, but it is genuinely funny and considerably authentic. The main guy in this, played by Guillaume Lambert, also wrote the screenplay. If you need a reminder that life isn’t always perfect every single day, or if you just need a good laugh, then fire it up below. ›››

Watch: First Trailer for Netlix's Futuristic Time Loop Sci-Fi Movie 'ARQ'

    ARQ Trailer

“You don’t have to believe me, but I need you to trust me.” Netflix has debuted the first trailer for a sci-fi film called ARQ, produced by Netflix as one of their smaller productions (similar to Christopher Guest’s Mascots). The film is about a unique technological device called the “ARQ”, which an engineer invents and keeps in his own house. Apparently it can “deliver unlimited energy and end the wars that have consumed the world”, but one day he wakes up and finds masked men in his house. They shoot him and leave him to die, but he wakes up alive repeating the same day, like Groundhog Day (the clock is an obvious reference). Robbie Amell stars with Rachael Taylor and a cast including Gray Powell, Jacob Neayem, Shaun Benson and Adam Butcher. This actually looks pretty cool, I’m very curious about checking it out. Enjoy. ›››

  • New Trailer for Power Line Movie 'Life on the Line' with John Travolta

New Trailer for Power Line Movie 'Life on the Line' with John Travolta

    Life on the Line Trailer

“Any little distraction will kill you.” Voltage Pictures has debuted another new trailer for the movie Life on the Line, an action-thriller about the risky lives of power line workers. The film stars John Travolta and Devon Sawa as two line workers who end up working during a massive storm that nearly destroys their lives. The cast includes Kate Bosworth, Sharon Stone, Gil Bellows, Julie Benz and Ryan Robbins. We featured a trailer for this earlier in the year, as it looks unlike anything else being released nowadays. It seems obliviously cheesy, but also almost like a throwback to 90’s action movies. Tavolta looks pretty wild, though I’m not sure if this will be any good. The release date listed in the trailer is for Singapore, not the US. ›››

Watch: First Trailer for Christopher Guest's Mockumentary 'Mascots'

    Mascots Film Trailer

“This fascinates the hell out of me!” Neflix has unveiled a trailer for the new Christopher Guest film, a mockumentary called Mascots about a group of sports team mascots competing for the most prestigious award in their field, the Gold Fluffy. This looks hilarious and brilliant at the same time, you just have to see the trailer and understand. Before Mascots hits Netflix, it’ll premiere at the Toronto and London Film Fests this year. The ensemble cast includes Jennifer Coolidge, Parker Posey, Zach Woods, Jane Lynch, Fred Willard, John Michael Higgins, Tom Bennett, Bob Balaban and Oscar Nuñez. This looks so good, and it seemingly came out of nowhere, which is happening often with Netflix gems these days. Enjoy. ›››

A Breath of Fresh Mountain Air – Returning to the Telluride Film Fest

    Telluride Film Festival

It’s nice to be back. Up in the mountains, ready to see more films and see what many talented filmmakers have in store for us. I have returned to the Telluride Film Festival in Colorado for my 9th year in a row, covering this festival with just as much enthusiasm as the first time I went (back in 2008). This film festival takes place an altitude of 8,750 ft (2,667 m), in a tiny little charming town nestled deep inside the San Juan mountains. It’s such a beautiful location, the kind where you can see the stars, where everyone around you is always saying “isn’t it so beautiful?”, where it’s easy to get a breath of fresh air, and where you must truly appreciate the place you at. I’m glad to be back, and I’m ready to start watching films. Let’s begin the show. ›››

  • First Trailer for Kelly Reichardt's 'Certain Women' with Kristen Stewart

First Trailer for Kelly Reichardt's 'Certain Women' with Kristen Stewart

    Certain Women Trailer

“No one understands what my life has become.” IFC Films has debuted the first official trailer for Certain Women, the latest film from American filmmaker Kelly Reichardt which first premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. The film is about the lives of three women which intersect in small-town America, “where each is imperfectly blazing a trail.” The indie drama stars Lily Gladstone, Laura Dern, Kristen Stewart, Michelle Williams, James Le Gros, Jared Harris and Rene Auberjonois. This definitely has a very raw and realistic feel to it, and that’s thanks to Reichardt. I’m personally not a fan of her work, but other critics lover her and have been raving about this film as well. Stewart is barely in this trailer, it seems to be about newcomer Lily Gladstone who looks impressive. If you’re curious, take a look. ›››

    Morgan Trailer IBM

Now this is unique marketing. Fox has partnered with IBM to create a special trailer for the sci-fi Morgan, about an artificially created being. It was made by IBM’s Watson and is the first-ever AI-created movie trailer. “Utilizing experimental Watson APIs and machine learning techniques, the IBM Research system analyzed hundreds of horror/thriller movie trailers. After learning what keeps audiences on the edge of their seats, the AI system suggested the top 10 best candidate moments for a trailer from the movie Morgan, which an IBM filmmaker then edited and arranged together.” The film stars Kate Mara as an expert called in to analyze the realistic aspects of an artificial person known as “Morgan”, played by Anya Taylor-Joy. They’ve been pushing some really fantastic marketing for this film, I just hope it all pays off. Have a watch. ›››
