    The Force Awakens VFX Breakdown

Watching VFX breakdowns is always enchanting. ILM has released their full 4-minute video showing their work on Star Wars: The Force Awakens. “The history of ILM leads all the way back to 1975 and origins of Star Wars and The Force Awakens gave us the opportunity to once again push the boundaries of what is possible in character animation and visual effects while combining cutting edge practical effects and physical sets.” It’s always cool to get a glimpse of what it was like on set and how much they added in each scene to make it feel so real. The amount of objects and layers in some of the scenes is remarkable. ILM also work with their “partners Hybride, Base FX and Virtuos” on this project. All movie geeks need to watch this. ›››

  • Must Watch: Will Smith Stars in First Full Trailer for 'Collateral Beauty'

Must Watch: Will Smith Stars in First Full Trailer for 'Collateral Beauty'

    Collateral Beauty Trailer

“Love. Time. Death. Now these three things connect every single human being on Earth.” Warner Bros has debuted a trailer for the new film Collateral Beauty, from the director of The Devil Wears Prada. Will Smith stars as a broken man who hates life after losing his child. He begins writing letters to “love, time, death” and suddenly encounters these ideas as real people in New York City. It’s kind of a new modern twist on the A Christmas Carol story. The impressive ensemble includes Edward Norton, Keira Knightley, Michael Pena, Naomie Harris, Jacob Latimore, Kate Winslet and Helen Mirren. This looks very powerful, very emotional, and very good. This December, experience the profound connection between us. ›››

  • UK Trailer for Mat Whitecross' Doc 'Supersonic' About the Band Oasis

UK Trailer for Mat Whitecross' Doc 'Supersonic' About the Band Oasis

    Supersonic Doc Trailer

“A brilliant blast of 90’s nostalgia.” A trailer has debuted for a new rock doc called Supersonic, all about the band Oasis. Their song “Wonderwall” is one of the most popular songs in movies and trailers, but this doc goes way beyond that to tell their entire life story. From the director of Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll, and Asif Kapadia and James Gay-Rees, producers of the doc Amy, comes this in-depth look at the music of the Manchester-based rock band. This doc also reminds me of The Beatles: Eight Days a Week – The Touring Years, which is funny because this trailer has a quote referencing how they were “one of the biggest bands since the Beatles.” This looks like it might be a great doc even for those who aren’t fans of the band. Enjoy. ›››

  • Official Trailer for Indie Horror Film 'Unnerved' Directed by Gary King

Official Trailer for Indie Horror Film 'Unnerved' Directed by Gary King

    Unnerved Trailer

“It’s pushing through.” “What is?” “Something big.” A full-length trailer has debuted for a new indie horror film called Unnerved, written and directed by Gary King, an up-and-coming filmmaker who is a friend of this site. The film is about a couple whose child is killed but they still feel his presence. They flee to a remote lake house to escape the unrelenting haunting following them, but (of course) learn that it’s still very much with them. Starring Katie Morrison, Mark DiConzo, Elena Sanz and Marty Lang. This looks like it’s having fun with the typical horror tropes rather than repeating them, but it’s hard to tell where it’s all going. ›››

In Love with Films at Telluride 2016 – 'Where the Stars Go to See Stars'

    Telluride 2016

The mountains are a truly magical place. For the past nine years in a row, I’ve made a pilgrimage up to the beautiful mountain town of Telluride in Colorado for the Telluride Film Festival. It only lasts for one weekend and it’s over way too quickly, but it’s still one of my favorite weekends every year. At the 2016 version of the film festival, I was able to catch 11 films and many of them were wonderful. A few of them are guaranteed to end up my Top 10 this year, and that’s usually the case with Telluride. I come to this festival year after year to fall in love with films again, to see some of the best that cinema has to offer, and I’m rarely disappointed. Plus over the four days the festivals lasts, I get catch up with old friends and make new ones. ›››

Watch: Trailer for Conservationist Romantic Comedy 'Scottish Mussel'

    Scottish Mussel Trailer

“Scallops. You’ve got a bath full of scallops.” Check out this quirky trailer for a very odd indie comedy called Scottish Mussel, which is an awkward play on words considering this is a romantic comedy and yet it’s also about mussels, meaning molluscs. Scottish Mussel is the directorial debut of actress Talulah Riley, who also stars in the film as the conservationist beauty who falls for an an illegal pearl fisher. Martin Compston plays a “Glaswegian chancer” who head to the Scottish Highlands to make money diving for pearls with his two friends. The romance angle is extremely cliched, with the obvious aspect of the two of them hating each other before she convinces him that mussels are worth saving. The cast includes Morgan Watkins, Joe Thomas, Harry Enfield, Rufus Hound, Camille Coduri & Marianna Palka. Dive in. ›››

  • First Teaser Trailer for Horror Film 'Lavender' Starring Abbie Cornish

First Teaser Trailer for Horror Film 'Lavender' Starring Abbie Cornish

    Lavender Trailer

“Tag, you’re it.” “Let’s play.” The first short teaser trailer has debuted for a horror film called Lavender, the latest from Canadian director Ed Gass-Donnelly (of Small Town Murder Song and The Last Exorcism Part II previously). The film stars Abbie Cornish as a woman who begins to see unexplained supernatural things around her home after losing her memory. Not the most original concept for a horror, but as always we hope there’s something unique about these kind of indie films. The cast includes Diego Klattenhoff, Justin Long and Dermot Mulroney. If you’re interested in any way, take a look – it’s a very short teaser. ›››

  • Telluride 2016: Werner Herzog's Doc 'Into the Inferno' is Spectacular

Telluride 2016: Werner Herzog's Doc 'Into the Inferno' is Spectacular

    Into the Inferno Review

Herzog is back! The German documentary master has premiered his second new film this year (the other being Lo and Behold Reveries of the Connected World) at the Telluride Film Festival. This new one is titled Into the Inferno, and follows Werner Herzog as he examines and investigates a number of different active volcanoes around the world. He travels around with a “volcanologist” named Clive Oppenheimer, getting as close as they possibly can but also investigating the various cultures and indigenous people that remain near these volcanoes. It’s a spectacular doc, more meaningful and intriguing than his other recent work. Into the Inferno examines the act of creation, with vivid imagery and utterly engrossing discussions. ›››

Telluride 2016: Villeneuve's 'Arrival' is Intelligent Sci-Fi for the Times

    Denis Villeneuve's Arrival

Before returning to our condo and beginning this review, I stopped for a few minutes and stared up at the stars. Here in Telluride you can view them so clearly, but this time I felt a renewed sense of wonder after emerging from one of the most intelligent alien sci-fi movies since Contact. It’s a major milestone in sci-fi, the next step in the non-stop evolution of this exciting genre of cinema. Arrival is a phenomenal film, an extremely intelligent yet captivating story brought to life in the most invigorating way by director Denis Villeneuve. It’s one of those brilliant movies that actually makes you appreciate all that sci-fi can offer, making you think intensely about life, the choices we make, and what place humans have in the universe. ›››

Watch: First Venice Trailer for Documentary 'David Lynch: The Art Life'

David Lynch: The Art Life Trailer

“I can imagine a whole world that doesn’t exist. I had tremendous freedom…” Another documentary about a filmmaker. The first trailer has arrived online for the film David Lynch: The Art Life, a documentary about the life and work of American director David Lynch. The doc is premiering at the Venice Film Fest this month, and will also play at the London Film Fest next. Lynch is beloved among critics for his films including Eraserhead, Blue Velvet, Lost Highway, Mulholland Dr. and Inland Empire. This seems like an intriguing doc that looks at all of the various influences on Lynch that have inspired his work. This is a very eerie trailer, but it’s probably perfect for fans of Lynch’s films who want to learn more about his life. Dive in. ›››
