Official Trailer for Indie Goth Drama 'Little Sister' with Addison Timlin

    Little Sister Trailer

“That’s the way it is.” Forager Films has debuted the first trailer for an indie drama called Little Sister, which premiered at the SXSW Film Festival and also played at BAMcinemaFest this summer. From writer/director Zach Clark, the film is about a young nun who returns home after her brother comes back from Iraq and rediscovers her youth as a goth girl. Addison Timlin stars as Colleen, with a cast including Ally Sheedy, Peter Hedges, Keith Poulson and Barbara Crampton. This eccentric little indie has some comedy to it, although reviews state it’s “definitely a drama first: a tough familial drama consisting of broken souls seeking an avenue to mend fences.” I’m not sure what to make of this, but it looks good. The description says it’s “a schmaltz-free, pathos-drenched, feel good movie for the little goth girl inside us all.” ›››

  • New US Trailer for Toy Adaptation 'Max Steel' Starring Ben Winchell

New US Trailer for Toy Adaptation 'Max Steel' Starring Ben Winchell

    Max Steel Trailer

“Max – you can use your energy in many different ways: you can run faster, be stronger.” Another toy movie! Open Road Films has debuted the official US trailer for the Max Steel movie, adapted from one of Mattel’s popular line of toys. The movie is about the adventures of teenager Max McGrath, played by Ben Winchell, and his alien companion Steel – when they combine powers they become “Max Steel”. The movie also features Josh Brener, Ana Villafane, Andy Garcia, Maria Bello and Mike Doyle. The villain seems to be some other weird alien force that comes after Steel and the people of Earth. This is some serious sci-fi and I’m glad they don’t hold back in that aspect, but the rest of it seems a bit too cheesy for my tastes. I have no connection to the toys, but I kind of wish this looked better than it does, but alas what can you do. ›››

    Rogue One Toys Short Film

Disney has launched a fun short film for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story that is actually a commercial for the new toys and collectibles from this upcoming spin-off movie. Some have described it as similar to “Robot Chicken”, with various action figures and toys and Lego minifigs being animated with stop-motion and other trickery in an adventure to steal the Death Star plans – just like the movie! No surprise there. The focus is on the badass new hero, Jyn Erso, played by Felicity Jones in the film. Director Krennic, played by Ben Mendelsohn, also makes an appearance as does the new droid K-2SO. This short was actually made by fans, and they’ve also launched a contest for more fan-made short films – find out more here & have fun. ›››

    USS Indianapolis Trailer

“This is a damn suicide mission…” “Full speed ahead.” A new international trailer has debuted for the film USS Indianapolis: Men of Courage, about the tragic sinking of the USS Indianapolis during World War II. Nicolas Cage stars as Captain Charles B. McVay, who was court-mailed for “failing to zigzag” as the Captain of this ship, then exonerated more than half a century later. The full cast includes Tom Sizemore, Thomas Jane, Matt Lanter, Weronika Rosati, Brian Presley and others. This trailer is extensive and explains most of the story, including attempting to survive in shark-infested waters after sinking. You can still see the first trailer here for something shorter, otherwise dive in to this epic, full 3 minute trailer below. ›››

    Paul Verhoeven's Elle

“Nutjobs, I can handle. My specialty.” Sony Classics has debuted an official US trailer for Paul Verhoeven’s latest film, a shocking but remarkable thriller called Elle, starring French actress Isabelle Huppert as the head of a video game company. The plot, and I’m not even exaggerating, involves her being raped in her own home by a masked intruder. She tries to figure out who it was and hunt him down, in return, and teach him a lesson. Also featuring Laurent Lafitte, Anne Consigny, Charles Berling, Virginie Efira, Judith Magre and Christian Berkel. I saw this film at the Cannes Film Festival when it first premiered and it’s fantastic – dark and devious and kind of messed up, but actually really fun and funny. Huppert is totally amazing and kicks ass in this role. It’s sure to spark some controversy, but it’s also a damn fine film. Enjoy. ›››

First Trailer for Thriller 'Shut In' with Naomi Watts & Jacob Tremblay

    Shut In Trailer

“Something’s going on and it’s not just in my head, I can prove it!” EuropaCorp has released the first trailer for a new thriller titled Shut In, from director Farren Blackburn. The film stars Naomi Watts as a child psychologist who moves to a big house in the middle of rural New England with her new foster care child, played by Jacob Tremblay (of last year’s film Room), along with her other brain dead son. While at first she seems threatened by him, it turns out they’re both being haunted by a “bad guy trying to kill them”. Oh boy, watch out. This trailer reveals quite a bit of twists, including that it might be a supernatural thriller of sorts. Also starring Charlie Heaton, Oliver Platt, David Cubitt and Crystal Balint. Take a look below. ›››

    Silicon Cowboys Trailer

“Enjoy it while you can, because IBM’s gunna have a portable and then it’s sayonara.” As a computer nerd, it’s always fun to see documentaries that explore the history of computers. Silicon Cowboys tell the story of the rise and fall of Compaq Computers. Launched in 1981 by three friends in Houston, they wanted to challenge IBM’s dominance over the personal computer market and were mostly successful. That is, until IBM decided to fight back. Everyone knows the name Compaq, but do you know the real story behind them? This looks like a fascinating and captivating doc not only about computers but about the cutthroat business world that is still prevalent today. That quote about “the way you were supposed to deal with IBM” sold me. ›››

Thomas Haden Church & Terrence Howard in 'Cardboard Boxer' Trailer

    Cardboard Boxer Trailer

“I wish someone would see me, just to know I am here…” Well Go USA has debuted a trailer for an indie drama titled Cardboard Boxer, starring Thomas Haden Church as a homeless man struggling to make ends meet. He’s coerced by two teens to fight other men for cash, but obviously doesn’t like doing so, and just wants to get away from his life on the streets. The cast includes Terrence Howard, Boyd Holbrook, and Macy Gray. The official description calls the film an “unflinching look at the lives of the displaced and forgotten members of society.” This looks very powerful and heartbreaking, and even though Thomas Haden Church is almost hard to look at, he seems to be giving an earnest performance. This is worth a quick watch. ›››

Zombies, VHS Games, Heists & Thrills at Germany's Fantasy Filmfest

    Germany's Fantasy Filmfest

Over the past week and a half I’ve been attending a few screenings of films as part of the Fantasy Filmfest in Berlin (where I now live). Inspired by and operated similar to Fantastic Fest in Austin, TX and Fantasia in Montreal, the Fantasy Filmfest is a horror/sci-fi/genre festival in Germany (taking place in multiple cities over these past few weeks). Their catchy tagline is “Fear Good Movies” and their line-up of films this year is impressive, including some of my favorites from other fests like: Swiss Army Man, Under the Shadow, Train to Busan, Yoga Hosers, and War on Everyone. I caught four films over the last few weeks, two of them worth recommending. Overall, I’m glad I heard about this fest (from a fellow movie lover in Germany) – I always enjoy seeing some of the latest genre films, especially since there’s so many out there every year. ›››

    Terminator 2 3D

“The unknown future rolls toward us. I face it, for the first time, with a sense of hope. Because if a machine, a Terminator, can learn the value of human life, maybe we can too.” Get ready for the return of the Terminator movie we all love. James Cameron’s 1991 sci-fi classic Terminator 2: Judgement Day is being re-released in theaters in 2017 in 3D. The Facebook page for the T2 movie confirmed and released a poster to go along with the news. If, like me, you went to one of the Universal Studios theme parks as a kid you probably fondly remember the Terminator 2 ride in 3D (called “T2 3-D: Battle Across Time“), pretty much the best use of 3D up until Cameron gave us Avatar. Here’s to hoping this 3D conversion is as good. ›››
