Joel Edgerton & Ruth Negga in Another Trailer for Jeff Nichols' 'Loving'

    Loving Trailer #2

“I’m gunna raise my family here… I don’t care what they do to us.” Focus Features has unveiled a second trailer for the second Jeff Nichols film out this year, titled Loving, about Loving family from Virginia. The heartwarming film tells the story of the legendary interracial couple, Richard and Mildred Loving, played by Joel Edgerton and Ruth Negga, who married and then spent the next nine years fighting for the right to live as a family in their town in Virginia. The cast includes Alano Miller, Martin Csokas, Nick Kroll, and Michael Shannon. I first saw this in Cannes and wrote in my review that it’s a “a tender and heartfelt film.” The trailers are as beautiful as the film itself, focusing on their love above all. Go see this film for the story, see it for the performances, see it to be reminded what true love is all about. Just don’t miss this film. ›››

TIFF 2016: 'Catfight' – The Gloves Come Off in No Holds Barred Satire

    Catfight Review

It has often been said, “With friends like these, who needs enemies?” It is true that our friends can be are harshest critics; and sometimes you have to wonder why they were your friends in the first place. Catfight is what would happen if you confronted that friend and decided to smack them like a WWE Diva instead of talking it out like grown adults. Catfight, starring Anne Heche and Sandra Oh, written and directed by Onur Tukel – which just premiered at the Toronto Film Festival – is a strange story about a karmic cycle that not only escalates to violent physical altercations, but shows the repercussions of the aftermath. ›››

    The Alchemist Cookbook Trailer

“Just walking around in my mansion, in the woods, in my robe…” Oscilloscope Labs has released the full trailer for indie film The Alchemist Cookbook, from director Joel Potrykus who last made the cult hit Buzzard. This film is about a young outcast named Sean, played by Ty Hickson, who is holed up in a trailer in the woods with “The Alchemist Cookbook” and his cat trying to devise twisted schemes for vanquishing his enemies. After going too far with a recipe, he “awakens something far more sinister and dangerous”. There’s some funky footage in this trailer, but the best part is the quote from Variety about “if you only see two American indie features co-starring Satan this year…” You have to appreciate a unique trailer like this. ›››

Official US Trailer for André Téchiné's Coming-of-Age Film 'Being 17'

    Being 17 Trailer

“You lack confidence. In yourself, in others, in life.” Strand Releasing has debuted an official US trailer for André Téchiné’s Being 17, a drama that first premiered at the Berlin Film Festival earlier this year. The film is about a boy named Thomas, played by newcomer Corentin Fila, who lives up in the mountains in a small town in France. He is always getting into fights with another kid at his school, named Damien played by Kacey Mottet Klein, but it turns out there’s actually a sexual tension between them that is causing all the problems. The cast includes Sandrine Kiberlain as the mother of Damien, who invites Thomas to stay at their home. I saw this film in Berlin and was very impressed, even though it’s going to be a hard sell for most, it’s worth your time to discover. André Téchiné is an experienced director who knows what he’s doing. ›››

First Promo Trailer for the Young Bruce Lee Film 'Birth of the Dragon'

    Birth of the Dragon Trailer

“This is kung fu. It’s not a game. It is not a religion. It’s about who lives, and who dies.” Wow – martial arts fans need to take a look at this. The first full 3-minute promo trailer has debuted for a film called Birth of the Dragon, a fictional feature based on the true story of the legendary Bruce Lee. Directed by the guy who made The Adjustment Bureau, the film stars Philip Ng as a cocky, young Bruce Lee living in San Francisco training and teaching his kung fu skills to others. He is confronted by a legendary Shaolin monk named Wong Jack Man, played by Yu Xia, who is upset that he is sullying the art and spirituality of kung fu. This trailer pretty much goes through most of the story, including the token white dude who is a part of the story, played by Billy Magnussen. This looks like it has some fairly kick ass fights and will be inspiring to watch. ›››

Watch: Official Trailer for Morgan Spurlock's New Creature Doc 'Rats'

    Morgan Spurlock's Rats Trailer

“It’s becoming harder and harder to kill ’em.” Discovery Channel has debuted the first official trailer for Morgan Spurlock’s latest documentary titled Rats, and it is indeed about rats, the creepy little (or actually pretty big) vermin that live under our streets, eating our garbage, spreading disease. The doc is premiering in the Midnight Madness section of the Toronto Film Festival this week, which is perfect for this kind of film. While it’s based on the book about rats in New York City, Spurlock’s doc examines the history of rat infestations in major cities throughout the world. I’m a big fan of Spurlock and his documentaries, and this looks like it’s going to be freaky and fun. Thankfully as viewers we won’t have to get anywhere near any rats, but be prepared there are some seriously disgusting shots in this. But I still want to see it – looks fascinating. ›››
