TIFF 2016: Garth Davis' 'Lion' with Dev Patel is an Emotional Journey

    Lion Review

The true story of a young Indian boy separated from his impoverished family only to reunite with them 20 years later is told in the emotional new film Lion, directed by Australian filmmaker Garth Davis (“Top of the Lake”), a tale full of heart and perseverance. Some will perhaps find it easy to compare this to Slumdog Millionaire, another fairly recent (and popular) film about an Indian boy beating the odds to make his way back home, but they are both very different adventures. Instead of the fast-paced Slumdog approach, Lion has a more quiet and subtle style in mind. The film begins in 1986 following five year old Saroo Brierley (played by Sunny Pawar) as he struggles to help his mother and older brother make ends meet. ›››

New Trailer for DreamWorks Animation's 'Trolls' Finds the Joy in Music

    Trolls Trailer

“Happiness is inside of all of us, sometimes you just need someone to help you find it.” DreamWorks Anim has released a new full-length trailer for their next movie, Trolls, in theaters starting this November. While this is based on the funky little toys you used to collect as kids, it’s also a musical about finding happiness and your “true colors”. Featuring original music from Justin Timberlake, the film stars the voice talent of Anna Kendrick, Zooey Deschanel, Russell Brand, James Corden, Kunal Nayyar, Ron Funches, Icona Pop, Gwen Stefani and many more. This new trailer briefly goes behind-the-scenes with some shots of Kendrick and Timberlake talking about music and bringing this story to life. This looks quite lovely. ›››

First Trailer for Crime Thriller 'The Ghoul' Produced by Ben Wheatley

    The Ghoul Trailer

“Just because we’re plumbing the depths of the unconscious mind doesn’t mean we can’t have a cup of tea.” BFI has debuted a trailer for a little crime thriller from the UK called The Ghoul, the feature debut of actor Gareth Tunley. The film stars Tom Meeten as a detective who goes undercover as a patient to investigate a psychotherapist. However, he gets in over his head and the “line between fantasy and reality begins to blur.” Also featuring Alice Lowe, Rufus Jones, Niamh Cusack and Geoffrey McGivern. This seems to be a very trippy psychological thriller with sleek cinematography that will mess with your own mind. Take a look. ›››

Second Teaser Trailer for Benny Boom's 'All Eyez on Me' Tupac Biopic

    All Eyez on Me Trailer

“What happened to me? I got shot five times!” A second teaser for the film All Eyez on Me has arrived, with more footage than the first teaser from the summer. The film profiles the life of successful American rapper Tupac “2Pac” Shakur, who has killed in a drive by shooting at the age of 25 in 1996. Demetrius Shipp Jr. plays the late musician, and the cast includes Danai Gurira, Kat Graham, Annie Ilonzeh, Dominic L. Santana, Jamal Woolard and Keith Robinson. This actually looks damn good, better than anyone expected and that’s a good thing. This trailer is very powerful, makes me really want to see this. ›››

  • Mathieu Amalric in First Trailer for Benoît Jacquot's Film 'Never Ever'

Mathieu Amalric in First Trailer for Benoît Jacquot's Film 'Never Ever'

    Never Ever Trailer

“How long have you been here?” Alfama Films has debuted an official trailer for the French drama Never Ever, adapted from Don DeLillo’s novel The Body Artist, directed by French filmmaker Benoît Jacquot. The film is playing at the Toronto Film Festival now and just premiered at the Venice Film Festival before this. Mathieu Amalric stars as a “self-centered” filmmaker who falls for a beautiful body artist performing at the same gallery where his own film is screening. He runs off with her to his mansion and starts a passionate love affair, but of course their romance doesn’t last. Also starring the lovely Julia Roy as Laura, Jeanne Balibar, Victória Guerra and Elmano Sancho. This seems like yet another French romantic film with passion and desire and beauty driving the story, though I’m curious if there is some weird, freaky twist in it. ›››

  • Watch: Jessica Chastain as a Lobbyist in First Trailer for 'Miss Sloane'

Watch: Jessica Chastain as a Lobbyist in First Trailer for 'Miss Sloane'

    Miss Sloane Movie Trailer

“How the hell did she manage that?!” EuropaCorp has unveiled the trailer for the sure-to-be-controversial new drama Miss Sloane, starring Jessica Chastain as an ambitious lobbyist. Chastain plays Elizabeth Sloane, who is brought in to help fight for legislation requiring more stringent background checks for gun ownership. Of course she encounters an absurd amount of stubborn and powerful resistance, and this trailer teases that opposition. Also starring Mark Strong, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Alison Pill, Jake Lacy, John Lithgow, Michael Stuhlbarg, Sam Waterston & Dylan Baker. This looks very impressive, and I fully support Chastain’s character and all she is fighting for. It also makes me a bit sad, because she is obviously going to be “annihilated”. The film is likely going to play both sides equally, but still, we know. Take a look. ›››

  • First Trailer for Sequel 'Fifty Shades Darker' Starring Dakota Johnson

First Trailer for Sequel 'Fifty Shades Darker' Starring Dakota Johnson

    Fifty Shades Darker Poster

“I want you back…” “I don’t see how this can work.” We’re only going to write about this movie once, so let’s get it over with. Universal has debuted the first official trailer for the Fifty Shades of Grey sequel titled Fifty Shades Darker, directed this time by James Foley (of Glengarry Glen Ross). Dakota Johnson returns to play Anastasia Steele, and Jamie Dornan returns to play her tormented lover Christian Grey. Despite breaking up, they obviously get back together. The cast includes Kim Basinger, Tyler Hoechlin, Bella Heathcote, Hugh Dancy, Max Martini, Marcia Gay Harden, Rita Ora and Luke Grimes. This is pretty much exactly what you’d expect – more of the same cheesiness, more sex, more sadism, more footage that will make you roll your eyes. There’s even a few shots that look like a horror movie. Not for me. ›››

The Dangerous Life of John McAfee Doc

“He would talk about his hitmen, he would talk about how he could have people hurt or killed.” Showtime has debuted a trailer for the documentary Gringo: The Dangerous Life of John McAfee, from director Nanette Burstein, which is playing at the Toronto Film Festival now. You probably remember hearing about this story – John McAfee, founder of the popular anti-virus software that bears his name, was accused of murdering his ex-pat neighbor in Belize in late 2012. He escaped the country and was eventually deported back to the United States, but never charged. The doc examines the story and the wild side of McAfee, and reviews from TIFF indicate that this shows he was involved in not one, but two, murders. This looks crazy. ›››

Full US Trailer for 'Come What May' with a Score by Ennio Morricone

    Come What May Trailer

“The only way to keep our grip is to return to where we belong.” Cohen Media recently released this French film in US theaters (starting in NYC), titled Come What May, from director Christian Carion. Set in 1940 at the beginning of World War II, the film is about various people from small village in northern France who had to escape when the Germans invaded. It focuses primarily on two of them: Hans, seeking to recover his son who fled the village, and Percy, hoping to reach the sea, and find a boat back to England. Surprisingly, the film features an original score by Ennio Morricone, one of the few original scores he’s written recently besides The Hateful Eight. The full cast includes Alice Isaaz, August Diehl, Mathilde Seigner, Olivier Gourmet and Matthew Rhys. This looks like it’s a damn good WWII drama, I might have to check it out. ›››

  • Watch: Badass Raw Footage from 'Mad Max: Fury Road' Without VFX

Watch: Badass Raw Footage from 'Mad Max: Fury Road' Without VFX

Mad Max: Fury Road Without VFX

This is SO badass. I’m pretty sure I’ve seen this before (perhaps one of the special features on iTunes), but there’s nothing wrong with sharing it and watching it all over again. An awesome behind-the-scenes video from George Miller’s Mad Max: Fury Road is making its way around the internet, mostly because it’s still amazing (more than a year after release) to see how they actually shot so much of this film realistically, with big rigs and crazy vehicles and huge explosions. This proves that George Miller is a helluva director and probably was the one who really deserved to win the Best Director Oscar for last year. Even though the final version of Fury Road includes tons of VFX work, this video shows that so much of it was done practically. Even the the guys swinging on the giant poles, even the big crashes, even the wacky guitar player. Have fun. ›››
