New Trailer for That Gorgeous Hand-Painted 'Loving Vincent' Film

    Loving Vincent Trailer

“He was mad.” “He was an interesting man.” “He was a genius.” Another brief new trailer was discovered online for the hand-painted film Loving Vincent, set to arrive sometime next year (hopefully). You’ve probably heard about this film – it’s a biopic about famed Dutch artist Vincent Van Gogh, but is being told through hand-painted animation done in the same style of his paintings (behind-the-scenes here). The voice cast includes Aidan Turner, Saoirse Ronan, Eleanor Tomlinson, Helen McCrory, Chris O’Dowd and Douglas Booth. One of the best parts is that the score is being composed by the one-and-only Clint Mansell, who has been posting some photos on his Instagram of his work recording this score. Take a look. ›››

VIFF Review: 'Kate Plays Christine' is a Dark and Unique Documentary

    Kate Plays Christine

Reality can be more bewildering than fiction. On the surface level, the documentary Kate Plays Christine is about an actress, Kate Lyn Sheil, researching a challenging role for an unnamed film project. Christine Chubbuck was a real news anchor who worked at Sarasota’s WXLT-TV in 1974 and shocked viewers by shooting herself in the head live, on camera, taking her life. This moment became something of legend, then was largely forgotten but at times interest in the incident is renewed. The film’s writer, director & editor Robert Greene quickly leaps between archival footage, behind-the-scenes snippets and a few dramatized recreations, forcing you to think, first, about what is fact and fiction and then, where the two should meet. ›››

  • First Trailer for Horror Thriller 'The Unspoken' with Jodelle Ferland

First Trailer for Horror Thriller 'The Unspoken' with Jodelle Ferland

    The Unspoken Trailer

“Let me introduce you to Adrian… Just so you know, Adrian isn’t your typical nine-year-old…” Paladin has released a trailer for a supernatural horror thriller titled The Unspoken, from director Sheldon Wilson. Jodelle Ferland stars as a young babysitter of a nine-year-old boy whose father was killed years earlier in the same house their still living in. Obviously things start to get scary. The cast includes Sunny Suljic as Adrian, plus Neal McDonough, Pascale Hutton, Matt Bellefleur, Rukiya Bernard and others. This looks like yet another typical evil-child horror movie, similar to The Omen or The Bad Seed or Joshua or Orphan. There’s plenty of them already, and this one just doesn’t look like it has anything different to offer. ›››

  • Another Super Creepy Teaser for Horror 'The Autopsy of Jane Doe'

Another Super Creepy Teaser for Horror 'The Autopsy of Jane Doe'

The Autopsy of Jane Doe Teaser

“This autopsy will be conducted in four stages…” IFC has debuted another teaser trailer for the upcoming indie horror The Autopsy of Jane Doe, which received some rave reviews out of Fantastic Fest last month. We posted the first very brief teaser for the film then, but this new teaser sheds even more light on the creepy ghost story. Emile Hirsch and Brian Cox play father-son coroners who receive a mysterious homicide victim with no apparent cause of death. “Perfectly preserved on the outside, Jane Doe’s insides have been scarred, charred and dismembered.” As they begin to go to work, things start to get very creepy – as you’ll see in this trailer below. This film also stars Ophelia Lovibond, Michael McElhatton, Parker Sawyers, and Olwen Kelly. The footage in this new teaser was enough to seriously scare me and make me fearful of ever watching this, and it probably doesn’t even show much of what happens. Take a look below. ›››

Watch: Shane Carruth & Mackenzie Davis in Sci-Fi Short 'Memory Box'

    Memory Box Short Film

“Be careful, Izzy… People are fragile.” Another intriguing sci-fi short to watch. This one is titled Memory Box, directed by filmmaking team Aaron Aites and Audrey Ewell. Sadly, Aaron Aites passed away from cancer and this is his last film as a director. Ewell is keeping his memory alive and has started an Indiegogo for extra funding to release this short (beyond the internet). It first premiered at Fantastic Fest last month and is now out online. Described as a “psycho-sexual sci-fi tinged short film”, Mackenzie Davis (from The Martian, Breathe In, “Halt & Catch Fire”) stars a young mother who works at a memory-recreation facility where actors recreate clients’ memories. Fellow sci-fi filmmaker Shane Carruth also stars. Love the score. ›››

  • Nicolas Cage Hunts Bin Laden in Larry Charles' 'Army of One' Trailer

Nicolas Cage Hunts Bin Laden in Larry Charles' 'Army of One' Trailer

    Army of One Trailer

“He’s obsessed.” TWC-Dimension has debuted a trailer for a comedy called Army of One, hopefully one of the last Middle East comedies we’ll see for a while (there have been a few recently and none of them have turned out that great). In this film, Nicolas Cage stars as an ex-con who receives a vision from God, played by Russell Brand, telling him to capture Osama Bin Laden. He purchases a sword and heads to Pakistan to complete his mission. This is actually loosely based on a crazy true story (why am I not surprised?) written about in GQ. The full comedic cast includes Wendi McLendon-Covey, Rainn Wilson, Denis O’Hare, Paul Scheer and Will Sasso. This looks pretty boring, and even though it’s fun to laugh at Nicolas Cage nowadays, there doesn’t even seem to be much to laugh at in this. Maybe a few will enjoy it, but who knows. ›››

  • First International Trailer for Werner Herzog's New Film 'Salt and Fire'

First International Trailer for Werner Herzog's New Film 'Salt and Fire'

    Salt and Fire Trailer

“Is it possible that there is something all pervading all around us which we are incapable of seeing?” Allocine has released a French trailer for the new Werner Herzog feature film Salt and Fire. This is the third film from Herzog this year, which is pretty damn impressive. The other two are documentaries – Lo and Behold about the internet, and Into the Inferno about volcanoes. Salt and Fire is also about a volcano and the environment, the story of a scientist who accuses a government of causing an ecological disaster. The cast includes Michael Shannon, Gael García Bernal, Veronica Ferres, Lawrence Krauss, and apparently Herzog himself in some role. I really loved Into the Inferno, and maybe Herzog stumbled upon a good story working on that film, I just hope this is better than the abysmal Queen of the Desert. Take a look. ›››

  • Funny Short Film 'Otherhalf' About a Man Breaking Up with Himself

Funny Short Film 'Otherhalf' About a Man Breaking Up with Himself

    Otherhalf Short Film

“I don’t know, I guess we’ve been drifting apart for a while… I’m more of a homebody, and my other half’s more outdoorsy…” Framestore Pictures has released an amusing short film called Otherhalf, from writer & director Ben West, who usually does commercials work for Framestore. Starring Eric Normington and Jayme Lynn Evans, the short is about a man who breaks up with the “other half” of his body, but through his experience finds out more about what makes him whole. Aside from being funny, this is actually kind of a charming short with an honest side. And it’s completely original – I’ve never seen anything like this. Enjoy. ›››

  • Watch: Animated 'Rock Dog' Trailer Starring Luke Wilson as a Rock Dog

Watch: Animated 'Rock Dog' Trailer Starring Luke Wilson as a Rock Dog

    Rock Dog Trailer

“You’re not going to be a musician, Bodi, you’re going to be a guard! Get used to it.” Lionsgate has released a trailer for an animated movie called Rock Dog, which seemingly came out of nowhere. Luke Wilson voices Bodi, a Tibetan Mastiff who discovers it’s his dream to become a musician when a radio falls out of the sky. The full voice cast includes Eddie Izzard, J.K. Simmons, Lewis Black, Kenan Thompson, Mae Whitman, Jorge Garcia, Matt Dillon and Sam Elliott as “Fleetwood Yak”. This looks like one of those companions-to-another-movie-this-year, the other being Sing, even though I’m wondering if this one might actually be the better movie. There’s some really weird things going on in this, but it looks enjoyable. ›››

Watch: Second Trailer for Zhang Yimou's Epic 'The Great Wall' Movie

    The Great Wall Trailer

“The Great Wall is the only barrier keeping the world safe…” Legendary Pictures and Universal Pictures have released a second trailer for Zhang Yimou’s new movie The Great Wall, a fantasy action epic about building the Great Wall of China. There’s all kinds of crazy stuff going on in this. Matt Damon stars in the cast as one of the few white dudes, with the rest of the cast including Pedro Pascal, Willem Dafoe, Andy Lau, Tian Jing, Eddie Peng, Numan Acar, Han Lu, Kenny Lin and Zhang Hanyu. As weird as this looks, I’m planning to see it just for the visuals alone – Zhang Yimou always makes his films so mesmerizing to watch. The action in this looks totally massive, it might actually be thoroughly entertaining. Bombs away. ›››
