Review: Edwards' 'Rogue One' Delivers the War for 'Star Wars' Fans

    Rogue One Review

The new regime behind the Star Wars franchise came with a promise to the die-hard fans of the world. We would be offered one, new entry into the series every year until the brand became old and tired or until the stars overhead burned out, whichever came first. That meant every other film would take a side step away from the main saga and branch out into the ever-expanding universe surrounding it. This meant something as trivial as the first paragraph of A New Hope’s opening crawl could be fleshed out into a feature film, which is what they’ve done with Rogue One, the first of many Star Wars stories to come. What looks like fodder to fill out the Star Wars release slate on paper, though, ends up delivering the freshness this beloved franchise desperately needed and all the excitement those die-hard fans have come to expect. ›››

  • Michael Caine & Morgan Freeman in Zach Braff's 'Going in Style' Trailer

Michael Caine & Morgan Freeman in Zach Braff's 'Going in Style' Trailer

    Going in Style Trailer

“Let’s go get our money back.” Warner Bros has released the first trailer for Zach Braff’s new comedy, titled Going in Style, starring three very talented actors: Morgan Freeman, Michael Caine & Alan Arkin. These three decide to team up for a heist to knock over a bank that absconded with their money, so they can retire “in style”. The full cast includes Joey King, Ann-Margret, Matt Dillon, Peter Serafinowicz, John Ortiz and Josh Pais. I’m surprised Zach Braff isn’t in this film as well, considering he’s appeared in every other movie he has directed so far, but all for the better. This looks funnier than expected, probably because these three actors are always so much fun to watch, but I’m still not sure how enjoyable this will be. ›››

  • Amy Schumer & Goldie Hawn in First Red Band Trailer for 'Snatched'

Amy Schumer & Goldie Hawn in First Red Band Trailer for 'Snatched'

    Snatched Trailer

“You’re going to miss this whole trip. Everything shouldn’t be so scary.” 20th Century Fox has debuted the first red band trailer for Snatched, the new comedy directed by Jonathan Levine (of The Wackness, 50/50, The Night Before). Goldie Hawn and Amy Schumer stars as mother and daughter who decide to take a trip together down to Ecuador. However, once they get there they end up kidnapped (aka “snatched”) and must work together to figure out how to escape. The cast includes Joan Cusack, Ike Barinholtz, Wanda Sykes, Christopher Meloni, Randall Park, Wanda Sykes, Óscar Jaenada and Colin Quinn. This looks a bit wacky and completely absurd, not my kind of comedy, but it’s set to open big during the summer. ›››

  • One Final Trailer for Supernatural Horror Thriller 'The Bye Bye Man'

One Final Trailer for Supernatural Horror Thriller 'The Bye Bye Man'

    The Bye Bye Man Trailer

“Don’t say it, don’t think it!” STX Entertainment has debuted one final trailer for horror thriller The Bye Bye Man, which has been delayed and delayed and is finally hitting this month. Directed by Stacy Title, the film is about three friends who encounter the “Bye Bye Man”, a very creepy, mysterious evil “person” that is played by Doug Jones. The primary cast also includes Douglas Smith, Lucien Laviscount, Cressida Bonas, Michael Trucco, Erica Tremblay, Cleo King and Faye Dunaway. While this is apparently an original horror movie, it seems to be borrowing from so many other horror films. Anyone have any interest? ›››

  • Full Trailer for Australian Coming-of-Age 'Jasper Jones' with Levi Miller

Full Trailer for Australian Coming-of-Age 'Jasper Jones' with Levi Miller

    Jasper Jones Trailer

“We don’t know who’s out there!” The first trailer has debuted for an Australian coming-of-age drama titled Jasper Jones, adapted from Craig Silvey’s bestselling Australian novel of the same name. The film stars Levi Miller as a 14-year-old boy living in a small town, who is awoken by a local man named Jasper Jones, played by Aaron L. McGrath. Jasper leads him deep into the forest and shows him something that will change his life forever, setting them both on a dangerous journey to solve a mystery that will consume the entire community. This kind of sounds a bit like Stand by Me by way of Australia, and the trailer has a bit of that feeling. This also stars Hugo Weaving, Toni Collette, Angourie Rice, Matt Nable, Dan Wyllie, and Myles Pollard. Not sure when this film will show up in the US, but it actually looks pretty damn good. ›››

  • Watch: First Trailer for Post-Apocalyptic Adventure Thriller 'Go North'

Watch: First Trailer for Post-Apocalyptic Adventure Thriller 'Go North'

    Go North Trailer

“The rules are the rules.” Orion Pictures + FilmBuff have revealed an intense trailer for the indie film Go North, a post-apocalyptic adventure about some kids who try to escape the “Lord of the Flies” community they’re living in. Starring a young cast including Patrick Schwarzenegger, Jacob Lofland (from Mud), Sophie Kennedy Clark, Joshua Close, Derek Brandon, Joe Cipriano, Ele Bardha, Atif Hashwi, and James Bloor. This is another one of those movies about a “catastrophic event” in the near future that wipes out everyone. Except this time it apparently spares all the teenagers and children, who have created their own communities to survive. But of course, it’s not the kind of world everyone wants to live in. Enjoy. ›››

  • Nicolas Cage + John Cusack in First Trailer for Action Thriller 'Arsenal'

Nicolas Cage + John Cusack in First Trailer for Action Thriller 'Arsenal'

    Arsenal Trailer

“Raise the stakes.” Lionsgate Premiere has debuted the trailer for a powerful action thriller titled Arsenal, about two brothers who must go to battle against a ruthless crime boss. Johnathon Schaech and Adrian Grenier star as the Lindel brothers, who “only had each other” growing up. Nicolas Cage, wearing a huge prosthetic nose, plays the crime lord who gets upset at one of the brothers and decides to kidnap and hold him for ransom. The other brother hires John Cusack to help find him, but things get tricky. Despite having an eclectic cast of notable actors, this looks impressively mediocre – I couldn’t be more disinterested in it, especially considering how bad the action looks. This should be going direct-to-VHS, but that’s just me. ›››

Watch: Official Trailer for 'Kedi' About the Many Stray Cats of Istanbul

    Kedi Trailer

“They are a distinct part of everyone’s life.” Oscilloscope has unveiled a trailer for the documentary Kedi, a story about the many stray cats living in/around Istanbul, Turkey. If you’ve ever been there, you’ve probably encountered a few of these furry friends roaming the streets. There are hundreds of thousands of them in the city, however this film profiles (and follows) seven of them specifically. Described as “a sophisticated take on your typical cat video”, this film should both “dazzle and educate” animal lovers of all ages. Kedi is the name of one of the cats they profile, and the rest of them are introduced in this trailer. This definitely does look charming, and it looks much better than your typical cat movie (see: Nine Lives). Worth watching. ›››

  • First Teaser for Hiromasa Yonebayashi's 'Mary and the Witch's Flower'

First Teaser for Hiromasa Yonebayashi's 'Mary and the Witch's Flower'

Mary and the Witch's Flower Trailer

A new Studio Ghibli film?! Not quite. It’s a new Studio Ponoc film. In fact, it’s the first Studio Ponoc film, directed by the same filmmaker who worked at Studio Ghibli for years. Mary and the Witch’s Flower is the new film from Hiromasa Yonebayashi, the director of of The Secret World of Arrietty and When Marnie Was There, with music by Takatsugu Muramatsu, based on “The Little Broomstick” by Mary Stewart. It tells the story of a girl who discovers a broomstick and goes to a witches school only to learn that some animals are being kept in cages. This definitely looks and feels like a Ghibli film, no doubt, from all the stunning background art to the animation to the fantasy elements and characters. I want to see this sooner than later. ›››
