“You can’t just decide to fix things!” The Orchard has unveiled the first official trailer for an indie dramedy called The Hero, from writer/director Brett Haley. The film stars Sam Elliott as “The Hero”, basically he’s playing himself, an “aging Western icon with a golden voice, but his best performances are decades behind him.” He tries to deal with his own demons while falling for a young stand up comedian, played by Laura Prepon. The cast also includes Krysten Ritter, Nick Offerman and Katharine Ross. This premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and also played at SXSW to mostly positive reviews. This is actually a damn good film, with some great performances from Elliott, Prepon, and Offerman. As much as this seems like a comedy, there’s a humble and emotional side to this that makes it even better than it seems at first glance. ›››

“We gotta get that briefcase.” Netflix has debuted a trailer for indie romantic comedy Tramps, from writer & director Adam Leon, of the NYC film Gimme the Loot previously. The story follows an aspiring chef in NYC who gets caught up in a crazy adventure when he has to help his brother finish a drug deal. But when the briefcase exchange goes wrong, he ends up running all over the city trying to figure out how to get things back in order. Callum Turner stars, along with Grace Van Patten, Michal Vondel, Mike Birbiglia, Margaret Colin, Louis Cancelmi, and Rachel Zeiger-Haag. I guess the unique twist in this is that he falls for the driver girl, which is kind of nice to see. It definitely feels like an indie, but has lots of heart, too. ›››

If you’re luck enough to get access to free parties throughout the day…” We’ve been covering the Sundance Film Festival for 11 years, and I adore the festival, but it’s not always the most inviting place especially if you don’t have proper access. This year, Vimeo hired “self-described ‘struggling’ Staff Picked documentarian” John Wilson to make a video about his experience at the festival – without any access. Suffice it to say, he makes an amusing doc that mocks the festival and the absurdity of everything, yet also finds the good in it. “Wandering up and down Main Street, remarking on the blend of commercialism and exclusivity, he paints a pretty pallid picture of festival life and the forces that dominate it.” It’s worth watching for a good life and a totally different look at Sundance. ›››

How much can you really analyze the films of The Fast and the Furious franchise at this point? They know what they are, and the fans of these movies definitely know what awaits them with each, new entry. The formula is evident: fast cars, silly dialogue, colorful but badass characters, and family, always family. The eighth and latest entry, The Fate (F8) of the Furious, is no different from the rest, and, though the film provides an endless slew of over-the-top and impressive stunts and a complete disregard for the laws of physics, it never recreates the feeling of excitement this franchise has delivered so many times before. “Promise me you’ll get out alive.” An international trailer has debuted for a WWII thriller titled HHhH, or also The Man With The Iron Heart, since no one really knows what HHhH means. The film tells the story of the assassination plot of Reinhard Heydrich in Prague, in May, 1942, when the Third Reich is at the peak of its power. This is the same mission known as “Anthropoid” that the other film titled Anthropoid is based on – they are the same exact stories, different films. This one also features an impressive international cast including Jason Clarke, Rosamund Pike, Jack O’Connell, Jack Reynor, Noah Jupe, Adam Nagaitis, Enzo Cilenti, Oscar Kennedy, and Mia Wasikowska. This was finished a few years ago, but has been kept in the can ever since, perhaps to distance itself from the other Anthropoid film. Check it out. ›››

“I know he’s never going to make it to daybreak because he’s going to get run over by a cab.” Picturehouse in the UK has unveiled a new trailer for the live movie Lost in London, starring and directed by Woody Harrelson. The film was originally presented as the first-ever “live movie”, shown in theaters in January, when it was taped live and shown live to audiences all over the world. The film has now be repackaged and will be released as a standalone feature, for those who still want to check it out. Over the course of one night (recreating a story from 2002), Harrelson finds himself in a scandalous misadventure around London that eventually lands him in prison. This looks fun, with appearances by Willie Nelson and Owen Wilson. I’ve heard a few good things from those who saw it in January, and it seems like it might be worth watching. ›››

Directed by Rian Johnson, this film continues the storyline started in The Force Awakens following Rey, Finn, Poe, and Kylo Ren. Daisy Ridley returns as Rey, with John Boyega, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Gwendoline Christie, Domhnall Gleeson, Lupita Nyong’o, Peter Mayhew, Andy Serkis, and Warwick Davis. Newcomers include Benicio Del Toro, Laura Dern, and others. This is our very first glimpse at the movie, so there isn’t too much revealed here, but there is a lot to think about. I love the visuals, it’s exciting to see Rey getting stronger, but I’m worried Luke may be going bad. Fire it up! ›››

“If we ever did stand a chance, we sure don’t anymore.” Gravitas Ventures has released a new trailer for the sci-fi indie thriller Alienate, about an alien invasion. From director Michael Shumway, a composer turned filmmaker, the story follows a man named David who leaves on a business trip to give his wife much-needed space, when the invasion lands. He fights to return home to find whatever is left. The cast includes Blake Webb, Tatum Langton, Jaclyn Hales, and Keith Hottinger. One review from IMDb says the film less about aliens and more about a “down to earth issue which is ‘alienation’ in erotic relationships.” The footage doesn’t do much to make me interested, as it seems fairly forgettable, but I can’t help be curious about sci-fi. ›››

An official trailer has arrived for a film that was just announced this week to premiere at the Cannes Film Festival next month. April’s Daughter is the latest film from Mexican filmmaker Michel Franco, of the critically acclaimed films Chronic and After Lucia previously. It tells the story of a 17-year-old woman who ends up pregnant, and decides to call her mom despite not being in contact with her much. Her mom shows up to help care for her and her sister (who also has a baby), but we soon learn why Valeria had wanted her to stay away. It’s a story about the complex relationship between parents and their children. Starring Valeria Becerril, Emma Suárez, Hernán Mendoza, Iván Cortés, Joanna Larequi, and Enrique Arrizon. This trailer does have English subtitles, so it’s worth a watch. It looks quite good, very moody and somber. ›››

An official trailer has debuted for a film titled Flames, a “docu-art hybrid” that was filmed over five years. The story follows a couple, filmmakers/artists Zefrey Throwell & Josephine Decker, who documented their own romance over the course of these five years. It’s apparently a very real romance and real story, but doesn’t end well. The two “simmer in the white hot apocalypse of first love until the throw of a dart finds them on a spontaneous trip to the Maldives and cracks open the question — is their love true or just a performance?” Even after breaking up, the two of them still came together to finish this film and present it as a remarkable inside look at real romance, including the bad side of what can happen. ›››
