Final Trailer for Forest Horror 'It Comes at Night' Playing this Summer

    It Comes at Night Trailer

“Just to be safe, the red door stays closed and locked.” A24 has revealed a third trailer for post-apocalyptic horror thriller film It Comes at Night, the second feature film from Trey Edward Shults, the director of last year’s Krisha. We’ve been building up the buzz for this film all year so far, with rave reviews from the Overlook Film Festival, and two impressive trailers before this. Joel Edgerton stars, with Riley Keough, Christopher Abbott, Carmen Ejogo, Kelvin Harrison Jr. and Griffin Robert Faulkner. The film is a horror taking place at a desolate home in the wilderness, where a father tries to protect his wife and son from a malevolent, mysterious presence terrorizing them right outside their doorstep. This seems to have a zombie feel to it, with much more going on. This is a very unique trailer with all the quotes and split screen. ›››

  • Official Trailer for Branagh's 'Murder on the Orient Express' Remake

Official Trailer for Branagh's 'Murder on the Orient Express' Remake

Murder on the Orient Express Trailer

“Everyone is a suspect.” 20th Century Fox has unveiled the first official teaser trailer for the new remake (or re-adaptation) of Murder on the Orient Express, the murder mystery set on a luxurious European train. Adapted from Agatha Christie’s novel, Kenneth Branagh directs this updated version, which boasts a very impressive cast: Johnny Depp, Michelle Pfeiffer, Penélope Cruz, Daisy Ridley, Josh Gad, Willem Dafoe, Kenneth Branagh, Judi Dench, Tom Bateman, Lucy Boynton, Olivia Colman, Miranda Raison, and Derek Jacobi. This actually looks a bit better than expected, even though the 1974 film is hard to live up to, they’re doing their best to bring us something new. I’m intrigued and will hope for the best. Plus, I love trains, so they’ve got already got me there. The teaser poster is gorgeous as well. See below. ›››

'Power to the People' Video Examines the Books in 'Captain Fantastic'

    Captain Fantastic Video - Books

One of my favorite films of 2016 was Matt Ross’ Captain Fantastic, starring Viggo Mortensen. It’s the kind of film I can put on any day and it makes me happy, I adore it, and I was so happy to see Viggo get an Oscar nomination for his performance. Not only is a great film, but it has so much to teach us about raising kids, keeping an open mind, learning more about the way we interact in this world, and fighting against a capitalistic society. Fellow cinephile H Nelson Tracey, who writes for the site Cinemacy, has created a video essay breaking down and examining all of the books shown and literature referenced in the film. There’s quite a few books referenced in this film, and if you’re looking for some extra summer reading, this is a very good place to start. As I’m a very big fan of this film, I couldn’t help sharing this video. Check it out. ›››

  • Interview: Japanese Director Takashi Miike on Filmmaking & Violence

Interview: Japanese Director Takashi Miike on Filmmaking & Violence

    Takashi Miike Interview

“I don’t choose the projects. I think the projects choose me.” At the 2017 Cannes Film Festival, legendary Japanese filmmaker Takashi Miike premiered his 100th film. At least, that’s what the marketing folks were telling us. When I asked him specifically about this, he gave me a different answer. Nonetheless, Miike is indeed a “legendary” filmmaker. Even at the age of 56, he still keeps making movies non-stop, sometimes two or three in a year. His latest film is titled Blade of the Immortal (or Mugen no jûnin in Japanese), an adaptation of a manga series about a samurai cursed with immortality who takes on a job of protecting a girl. He’s known for ultra-violent horror, epic samurai films, and the occasional drama. It was an honor to speak with him for what is the only interview he did with a website from America while at Cannes this year. ›››

    The Mountain Between Us Trailer

“Look, I don’t want to die up here because you’re too scared to take a risk.” 20th Century Fox has debuted the first official trailer for a dramatic survival thriller titled The Mountain Between Us, starring Kate Winslet and Idris Elba and survivors of a plane crash in the mountains. It’s yet another survival story set in desolate snowy mountains, similar to The Grey, but it’s also about the relationship between these two people – who were strangers before the crash. This was filmed up in Canada, and it looks beautiful, but also deadly. “I think optimism and hope is crucial to survive,” director Hany Abu-Assad tells USA Today. This looks solid, with these two very talented actors leading the way. Where did the dog come from? See below. ›››

  • One More Wacky Trailer for Bachelorette Party Comedy 'Rough Night'

One More Wacky Trailer for Bachelorette Party Comedy 'Rough Night'

    Rough Night Movie Trailer

“Great friends + terrible choices.” Sony Pictures has dropped off one more official trailer for Rough Night, this time a green band trailer after two red band trailers previously. This movie is a wild all-women comedy formerly known as Rock That Body, which is also the feature directorial debut of “Broad City” director Lucia Aniello. The film stars five women who get together for a bachelorette party – Scarlett Johansson (as the bride) along with Zoë Kravitz, Jillian Bell, Ilana Glazer, and Kate McKinnon. After deciding to get a stripper, they accidentally kill him and have to figure out what to do. This looks pretty crazy, and it might actually be worth seeing this summer. I still think it’s hilarious they bring the dead guy out with them. ›››

Trailer for Documentary 'School Life' Profiling Inspirational Teachers

    School Life Documentary Trailer

“Well, go on… impress me.” Magnolia Pictures has debuted an official trailer for a fun documentary titled School Life, formerly known as In Loco Parentis when it premiered at film festivals last year/this year. From filmmakers Neasa Ní Chianáin & David Rane, the documentary profiles two inspirational teachers at Headfort, the only primary-age boarding school in Ireland. “Long careers are drawing to a close for John and Amanda, who teach Latin, English, and guitar at a stately home-turned-school, where they are legends with a mantra: ‘Reading. ‘Rithmetic. Rock ‘n’ roll!’ But leaving is the hardest lesson.” I haven’t seen this yet, but it seems like I need to catch it when it opens. This looks seriously charming and inspirational, indeed a “heartwarming look at youth” and the fearless teachers who help shape them into good people. Have a look. ›››

  • First Trailer for Stephen Frears' 'Victoria & Abdul' Starring Judi Dench

First Trailer for Stephen Frears' 'Victoria & Abdul' Starring Judi Dench

    Victoria and Abdul Trailer

“I am cantankerous, greedy, fat. I am perhaps, disagreeably, attached to power. But I am anything but insane.” Focus Features has released the first official trailer for a film titled Victoria and Abdul, telling the story of an unlikely friendship between Queen Victoria of Britain and an Indian clerk named Abdul Karim. Director Stephen Frears partners with Judi Dench again, who stars as Queen Victoria (she also starred in Frears’ Philomena a few years back earning an Oscar nomination), with newcomer Ali Fazal playing Abdul. The full cast includes Olivia Williams, Michael Gambon, Eddie Izzard, Tim Pigott-Smith, Simon Callow, and Adeel Akhtar. This seems like a good fall film, charming and entertaining, with a few great performances. Dench looks excellent as always, and I’m intrigued to see Fazal’s performance. Worth a look. ›››

  • First Teaser Trailer for the Return of the Lovable Bear in 'Paddington 2'

First Teaser Trailer for the Return of the Lovable Bear in 'Paddington 2'

    Paddington 2 Teaser Trailer

“The hunt begins…” He’s back! One of the surprise hits of 2014 was the live-action Paddington bear movie, which many critics said is actually much better than expected. So, of course, they whipped up a sequel in no time and now it’s hitting theaters later this year. Paddington 2 opens in the UK in November and the first teaser trailer has arrived. Paddington, now happily settled with the Brown family, picks up a series of odd jobs to buy the perfect present for his Aunt Lucy’s 100th birthday, only for the gift to be stolen. The very British cast includes Hugh Grant, Brendan Gleeson, Peter Capaldi, Sally Hawkins, Julie Walters, Jim Broadbent, and Hugh Bonneville, with Ben Whishaw returning as the voice of Paddington, and Imelda Staunton as the voice of Aunt Lucy. This looks a bit zany and cheesy, but still lots of fun. Enjoy. ›››
