John Cusack in Trailer for Artificial Intelligence Sci-Fi Film 'Singularity'

    Singularity Movie Trailer

“I am a survivor. But I am not alone.” Voltage Pictures has released an official trailer for a super weird, out-of-nowhere sci-fi film called Singularity, in reference to the theoretical “singularity” moment within computing / technology. John Cusack stars as the CEO of a company that is about to released a “super computer designed to end all wars.” Surprise! The computer determines humans must be eradicated, and unleashes an army of robots upon the world. This is less like Transcendence, much more of a Terminator rip-off meets Transformers meets Divergent, or something like that. The cast includes Julian Schaffner, Jeannine Wacker, Eileen Grubba, and Carmen Argenziano. It can also be filed under why-is-John-Cusack-making-such-terrible-movies, since it looks as bad as they come. This is one trailer worth skipping. ›››

Official Trailer for Netflix's Economics Documentary 'Saving Capitalism'

    Saving Capitalism Documentary Trailer

“Something’s way off, all over the country…” Netflix has revealed a trailer for the documentary Saving Capitalism, based on Former Secretary of Labor Robert Reich’s book of the same name. His book attempts to provide a more focused concept of how America save itself, fix its economy, and maintain capitalism as the financial system of the country. “As income and wealth go to the top, more Americans are left behind. Now it’s up to those ordinary Americans to change the rules.” This seems like one of those nice economics documentaries, kind of like Freakonomics, that attempts to take the big ideas and present them in a way that’s understandable and digestible. I’m honestly not fully supportive of the idea of “saving capitalism”, but I do support Netflix docs, so I’m featuring this anyway. It’s always good to hear all the different arguments. ›››

  • Patricia Arquette & Rainn Wilson Are Parents in Trailer for 'Permanent'

Patricia Arquette & Rainn Wilson Are Parents in Trailer for 'Permanent'

    Permanent Movie Trailer

“Hairstyles are temporary, but family is forever.” Magnolia has debuted an official trailer for an indie comedy titled Permanent, set in the 1980s about a young girl who gets a special hairstyle to fit in. The title is, of course, referring to the 80’s hairstyle called “permanent”, or better known as a “perm”, with big Farrah Fawcett-type curls. When she tries to get this done at the wrong place, it turns out to be a disaster, turning her into the laughing stock of the school. Kira McLean stars as Aurelie, along with Patricia Arquette and Rainn Wilson as her parents, plus Aidan Fiske, Jane McNeill, and Brian Bremer. This looks fun, quirky, and charming, in a quintessential indie way of course, which is why it also looks mostly forgettable. ›››

Trailer for Ireland's Oscar Entry 'Song of Granite' About a Folk Singer

    Song of Granite Trailer

“The songbirds of the air listened in wonder to this song, the most beautiful song in life.” Oscilloscope Laboratories has debuted an official US trailer for a film titled Song of Granite, which is Ireland’s entry into the Academy Awards this year. This film is about an Irish singer named Joe Heaney, who was one of the greats of traditional Irish singing (also known as sean nós). Similar to I’m Not There in a way, this seems to involve various musicians and actors playing Heaney, and it’s shot in stunning B&W which seems to make it all the more mesmerizing. Starring Colm Seoighe (as young Joe Heaney), Mícheál Ó Chonfhaola (as Joe Heaney, 40s), Macdara Ó Fátharta (as Joe Heaney, 60s) & Jaren Cerf (as Rosie). This looks like a very soulful, moving film full of some exceptional Irish singing and captivating cinematography. See below. ›››

First Trailer for Quinn Shepard's Acclaimed Directorial Debut 'Blame'

    Blame Trailer

“There’s not really anybody else that I’m close to…” Samuel Goldwyn Films has unveiled an official trailer for an indie drama titled Blame, the feature directorial debut of young 22-year-old filmmaker Quinn Shepard. The film is about a drama teacher’s taboo relationship with an unstable high school student, which strikes a nerve in her jealous classmate, sparking a vengeful chain of events. The film itself is based loosely on Arthur Miller’s “The Crucible”, which is also even specifically referenced within it as the play that the drama teacher chooses for their fall show. Quinn Shephard and Chris Messina star, along with Tate Donovan, Trieste Kelly Dunn, Tessa Albertson, Sarah Mezzanotte, and Nadia Alexander. This looks like a sultry drama with some great performances, dealing with the emotional turmoil of high school. ›››

Review: Waititi's 'Thor: Ragnarok' is a Heavy Metal, Viking Adventure

    Thor: Ragnarok Review

Created by Stan Lee & Jack Kirby, Thor first appeared in 1962’s comic Journey Into Mystery #83, a sci-fi anthology published by Marvel Comics. Based on the Norse deity of the same name, Thor is the God of Thunder and possesses Mjolnir, an enchanted hammer. A year later, Thor was included in The Avengers #1 as a founding member of the team, and the character has since appeared in every subsequent volume of the series. As a result, Thor has become one of Marvel’s most popular and enduring superheroes, featured in countless comics, animated series, video games, and live-action films. Played by Chris Hemsworth, Thor has appeared in five Marvel Cinematic Universe movies – including Thor, The Avengers, Thor: The Dark World, Avengers: Age of Ultron, and a cameo at the end of Doctor Strange. His latest cinematic outing, Thor: Ragnarok, looks to set a new standard for not just the Thor series, but the rest of the MCU as well. ›››

Watch: Fascinating Video Essay Explains How Eyes Process Film Cuts

How Our Eyes Process Film Cuts

“For millennia, we’d never seen anything like film cuts. How do we process them so easily?” When you watch a movie nowadays, unless you’re trained in the art of editing or filmmaking, you probably don’t even notice most of the cuts in the movie. If the editing is top notch, the cuts are designed to work in a way where you don’t see them, so that you can still easily follow the action and dialogue in a scene. This video essay from Adam D’Arpino attempts to explain, scientifically, how our brains have adapted to film cuts so quickly. The full title of the video is – Strange Continuity: Why Our Brains Don’t Explode at Film Cuts. It’s a fascinating visual examination for movie nerds and science nerds alike, getting into the technical aspects of filmmaking that help our eyes, as well as the anthropological details that make it all work harmoniously. ›››

  • Michael Shannon in Trailer for Small-Town Comedy Film 'Pottersville'

Michael Shannon in Trailer for Small-Town Comedy Film 'Pottersville'

    Pottersville Trailer

“It’s a magical life.” Echo Bridge has debuted an official trailer for a small-town holiday comedy film titled Pottersville. This looks like the wackiest, straight-to-cable-TV Christmas comedy in, well, a long time. The only reason we’re featuring it here is because it actually has an interesting cast. Michael Shannon stars as a struggling shop owner who is mistaken for Bigfoot when stumbling around drunk late one night. This brings attention to the town, in turn helping the local businesses. The rest of the cast includes Judy Greer, Tom Lennon, Ron Perlman, Christina Hendricks, and Ian McShane. I honestly don’t even want to suggest watching this trailer, but at least it won’t take up more than two minutes of your time. Try to enjoy. ›››

  • See Diane Kruger at Her Very Best in Official US Trailer for 'In the Fade'

See Diane Kruger at Her Very Best in Official US Trailer for 'In the Fade'

    In The Fade Trailer

“They’ll be punished, I promise you.” Magnolia has unveiled an official US trailer for Fatih Akin’s In the Fade, a dramatic thriller starring Diane Kruger. Kruger won the Best Actress award at the Cannes Film Festival this year, where the film played in competition. She stars as a German woman named Katja, who goes for revenge after a bombing that kills her husband and son. The cast includes Numan Acar, Ulrich Tukur, Johannes Krisch, Siir Eloglu, Denis Moschitto, Jessica McIntyre, and Ulrich Brandhoff. This is going to be a very divisive, likely controversial film – because of what it addresses and what happens and how it all plays out. It’s a fascinating, emotion-fueled film worth discussing. I saw this in Cannes and I think it’s an impressive film with a hell of a performance by Kruger. This trailer gives away a lot, watch out. ›››

  • New 'Tommy' Trailer for James Franco's Stellar 'The Disaster Artist'

New 'Tommy' Trailer for James Franco's Stellar 'The Disaster Artist'

    The Disaster Artist Trailer

“This my movie. And this is my life…” Don’t know who Tommy Wiseau is? Meet the man behind it all! A24 has released another new official trailer for James Franco’s The Disaster Artist, the film telling the story of infamous filmmaker Tommy Wiseau and his worst-movie-ever-made The Room (released in 2003). This film is going to be a huge hit when it hits theaters, no thanks to Wiseau’s infamy. It stars James Franco, who also directs, as Tommy Wiseau, the awkward mastermind behind the totally awful-but-beloved film. The outstanding ensemble cast includes Dave Franco, Seth Rogen, Alison Brie, Zac Efron, Bryan Cranston, Eliza Coupe, Josh Hutcherson, Sharon Stone, Adam Scott, Jason Mantzoukas, Kate Upton, Megan Mullally, Ari Graynor, with an appearance by Judd Apatow. I just saw this at a film festival and very much enjoyed it – here’s my review. Don’t miss it when it opens in theaters soon. Have fun. ›››
