    Desolation Trailer

“Dad said you should never go off trail.” IFC Midnight has unveiled an official trailer for a horror thriller titled Desolation, the feature directorial debut of filmmaker Sam Patton. This first premiered at the Los Angeles Film Festival, but hasn’t played at too many other festivals. In Desolation, a young mother, her best friend and son venture into the wilderness for a camping trip only to find themselves the hunted prey in a deranged killer’s terrifying game. The cast includes Jaimi Paige, Alyshia Ochse, Claude Duhamel, and Toby Nichols. This looks like an interesting horror thriller, but I’m pretty sure I’ve already figured out the twist. Though I guess I don’t really know. The sunglasses dude doesn’t seem that creepy, but that’s just me. ›››

He has been named “one of architecture’s biggest innovators” but that doesn’t mean he takes his work lightly. Interview: Swiss Filmmaker Petra Volpe on Making 'The Divine Order'

    Petra Volpe - Filmmaker

“Sometimes you need luck as a director. We always think it’s all about control and it is a lot about control when you direct a movie, but it’s also about things that you can’t foresee.” There’s a film now playing in theaters titled The Divine Order, from Swiss writer/director Petra Volpe. The film is Switzerland’s entry in the Oscars this year and it’s obvious why when you see it. This very entertaining, exciting, engaging film tells the story of a woman in a mountain town in Switzerland who rallies other women to join in the fight for the right to vote. Swiss women only passed a law in 1971. I had a chance to talk with writer & director Petra Volpe and I’m so happy I did – she’s a joy to talk with and had much to say about making empowering films. ›››

New Trailer for Rupert Jones' Thriller 'Kaleidoscope' with Toby Jones

    Kaleidoscope Trailer

“You left clues everywhere…” IFC has debuted the first official trailer for an intriguing psychological thriller titled Kaleidoscope, from writer/director Rupert Jones. The film stars Toby Jones as middle-aged man just released from prison. The film is apparently about his relationship to his mother, and asks the question: “is it possible to escape our past?” The cast includes Anne Reid, Sinead Matthews, Manjinder Virk, Karl Johnson, Deborah Findlay, and Frederick Schmidt. This looks like a creepy, mysterious head-trip kind of film, but actually quite good with seemingly lots of twists. Per the description: “At the heart of this modern day Psycho are some unsettling questions: Can we ever escape the role in which we are cast by our early circumstances? Must a perpetrator first be a victim?” This trailer is definitely worth checking out. ›››

Exciting Full Trailer for 'The Greatest Showman' Starring Hugh Jackman

    The Greatest Showman Trailer

“Does it bother you that everything you’re selling is fake?” 20th Century Fox has released the new full-length trailer for The Greatest Showman, the exciting new musical telling the story of showman P.T. Barnum, the original creator of the vaudeville show known as the circus. Hugh Jackman stars as P.T. Barnum, in this rather extravagant but mesmerizing musical, with original songs from the Oscar-winning lyricists of La La Land, Benj Pasek & Justin Paul (this is a big marketing point). The huge ensemble cast also includes Zac Efron, Michelle Williams, Rebecca Ferguson, Paul Sparks, and Zendaya. Okay I have to honestly say, this looks magnificent, I really can’t wait to see this. Maybe there’s a chance it could be another outstanding year-end movie sliding in the last few days of 2017. No really, it looks great. Have fun. ›››

Watch: 'Come Swim' – Kristen Stewart's Very Abstract New Short Film

    Come Swim Short Film

“What’s wrong… you can’t breathe underwater?” Refinery29 has debuted the online version of Kristen Stewart’s acclaimed new short film titled Come Swim, which played at the Sundance and Cannes Film Festivals this year. There was big buzz on this, as it’s big directorial debut for the famed actress Kristen Stewart, and it’s weird and wacky and experimental, and some of you are going to hate it. But maybe some of you will love it. The short film is described as a “diptych of one man’s day; half impressionist and half realist portraits.” The short film also features a score by the American musician known as St. Vincent. This has some cool shots in it, but it’s so frickin’ crazy abstract, I don’t even know what to say about it. I’m glad she’s trying something different, but I hope her next film is a bit more coherent. Watch Come Swim below. ›››

The film tells the “incredible true story” of rookie journalist Jay Bahadur, who in 2008 decided to go to Somalia to embed himself among the pirates there. Evan Peters stars as journalist Jay Bahadur, and of course they got Somalian native Barkhad Abdi to star as his local fixer. The cast also includes Coral Peña, Philip Ettinger, Russell Posner, Melanie Griffith, and Al Pacino. This actually looks better than expected, so far so good, I am honestly intrigued. ›››

Official Trailer for Indie Film 'Small Town Crime' Starring John Hawkes

    Small Town Crime Trailer

“We do this – there is no half way.” Lionsgate has unveiled the first trailer for an indie dark comedy titled Small Town Crime, which played at the SXSW and London Film Festivals. The “small town” crime film stars John Hawkes as an alcoholic ex-cop who finds the body of a young woman and, through an act of self-redemption, becomes hell-bent on finding the killer but unwittingly puts his family in danger and gets caught up with several dark characters along the way. Sounds fun, no? The ensemble cast includes Octavia Spencer, Anthony Anderson, Robert Forster, Clifton Collins, Jr., Michael Vartan, James Lafferty, Daniel Sunjata, Caity Lotz, Jeremy Ratchford, Don Harvey, Stefanie Scott, and Dale Dickey. This looks pretty much exactly as it sounds, but at least it’s nice to see Hawkes in another lead role. ›››

    Hostiles Movie Trailer

“You have no idea what war does to men.” Entertainment Studios has unveiled a new full-length trailer for Scott Cooper’s wild west thriller Hostiles, which will hit theaters in December at the end of the year. Set in New Mexico in 1892, the film follows a legendary Army captain who reluctantly agrees to escort a Cheyenne war chief and his family through dangerous territory. Christian Bale stars as Captain Joseph J. Blocker, and Wes Studi stars as Yellow Hawk. It’s described as a “heroic odyssey of survival” that “becomes a story not about the miles traveled nor the battles fought, but the journey towards respect, reconciliation, and forgiveness.” The cast includes Rosamund Pike, Ben Foster, Peter Mullan, Jesse Plemons, Stephen Lang, Q’orianka Kilcher, Timothée Chalamet, and Rory Cochrane. This premiered to great reviews in Telluride, and looks like a solid, dusty action thriller. This trailer actually makes me want to see this film. ›››

    Hollow in the Land Trailer

“Do you think he could’ve done it?” Vertical Entertainment has unveiled the first official trailer for an indie mystery thriller titled Hollow in the Land, the feature directorial debut of Canadian filmmaker Scooter Corkle. Hollow in the Land is a small-town murder mystery thriller starring Dianna Agron as a woman who decides track down her brother to clear his name after being blamed for a crime he didn’t commit. There seems to be a few other twists and turns, as expect, in this film described as “Winter’s Bone-meets-‘Making a Murderer’”. The full cast includes Jared Abrahamson, Shawn Ashmore, Rachelle Lefevre, Sarah Dugdale, Jessica McLeod and Michael Rogers. This looks quite solid, perhaps a strong debut for Corkle. It also seems like another chance for Agron to show how talented she is, leading the entire film. ›››
