Maxine Peake in First UK Trailer for Stand Up Comic Film 'Funny Cow'

    Funny Cow Trailer

A woman who has a funny bone for a backbone. Entertainment One UK has debuted an official trailer for the indie comedy Funny Cow, starring English actress Maxine Peake as a comedienne in the 70s making her mark on the male-dominated stand up scene. Peake recently starred in the black-and-white “Metalhead” episode of Netflix’s “Black Mirror”, which is where some people might recognize her from, even though she has been in many films before this. Set against the backdrop of the 70s/80s comedy club circuit in Northern England, Funny Cow stars Peake as fictional comedienne “Funny Cow”, trying making a name for herself in the stand up world. The full cast includes Paddy Considine, Christine Bottomley, Stephen Graham, Alun Armstrong, Tony Pitts, Hannah Walters, and Kevin Eldon. This film actually looks quite good. ›››

  • Trailer for South African Movie 'Blood & Glory' Directed by Sean Else

Trailer for South African Movie 'Blood & Glory' Directed by Sean Else

    Blood & Glory Trailer

“What if we defeat you?” Cleopatra Entertainment has released an official US trailer for the South African period epic Blood & Glory, which opened in South Africa in 2016, but is just now getting a US release direct-to-VOD this March. Based on true historical events from South Africa’s history, the story is about a man who is taken prisoner during the Second Anglo-Boer War and is sent to the St. Helena concentration camp, where he tries to defeat a Colonal at the game of rugby. Stian Bam stars, along with Charlotte Salt, Josh Myers, Andre Jacobs, Greg Kriek, Nick Cornwall, and Grant Swanby. This actually looks like a film about rugby, or so it seems, with prisoners learning to play in order to battle against the warden. This just seems like an odd story to tell, but I don’t know the history in South Africa well enough. Watch below. ›››

  • Berlinale 2018: 'Becoming Astrid' is a Swedish Story of Perseverance

Berlinale 2018: 'Becoming Astrid' is a Swedish Story of Perseverance

    Becoming Astrid Review

This is the story of Astrid Lindgren, a Swedish woman who went on to write the massively popular series of books about Pippi Longstocking. Becoming Astrid is a feature film about the teenage years of Astrid’s life in Sweden. She was born in 1907, and in her youth struggled to find her independence and place in the small town of Näs where she was raised. From the moment the film started, I had a good feeling about it, with the score and the opening scene of an elderly Lindgren reading cards that children have sent her at her home. The rest of the film takes place in the 1920s in Sweden, telling the true story of a young Astrid and her love for an older newspaper man. It’s a lovely, engaging tale of an intelligent woman who strived to be different. ›››

New Trailer for 75th Anniversary UK Screenings of 'The Dam Busters'

    The Dam Busters Trailer

“The dramatic true-life story of the men who broke the Nazis’ back!” Studiocanal in the UK has debuted a short new trailer for a special re-release screening of The Dam Busters, the 1955 WWII film about British bombers taking out German dams. This action film is regarded as one of the best WWII films, becoming the most popular film in British cinemas in 1955 when it was released. The Dam Busters has been in the news recently, as Peter Jackson has been trying to remake it for a long time. Nothing has come together yet and it’s still in development. Studiocanal is hosting a special 4K restoration screening for one night only in May in the UK, with a gala at the Royal Albert Hall that will be broadcast to other cinemas around the UK. The Dam Busters stars Richard Todd, Michael Redgrave, Ursula Jeans, Basil Sydney, Patrick Barr, Ernest Clark, and Derek Farr. If you live in the UK, this seems like a do-not-miss screening. • Trailer for HBO Documentary 'I Am Evidence' About Untested Rape Kits

Trailer for HBO Documentary 'I Am Evidence' About Untested Rape Kits

    I Am Evidence Documentary Trailer

“Never opened, never tested.” HBO has debuted a full trailer for the documentary I Am Evidence, which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival last year and also played at AFI Docs, and the Nantucket, Traverse City, Hamptons, and St. Louis Film Festivals. This powerful documentary is an important investigation into the way sexual assault cases are handled by police departments in America. Many brave women across the country tell stories of unthinkable experiences with rape who report, press charges, and go through rape kits thinking that their rapists will be caught and punished. Unfortunately we learn that there is a shocking number of untested rape kits in the US today. Hundreds of thousands of kits containing potentially crucial DNA evidence sit abandoned in police evidence storage rooms. Hopefully this doc might make a difference. ›››

  • Another New Trailer for Murderer Girls Dark Comedy 'Thoroughbreds'

Another New Trailer for Murderer Girls Dark Comedy 'Thoroughbreds'

    Thoroughbreds Trailer

“You cannot hesitate.” Focus Features has released one final trailer for Cory Finley’s devilishly dark comedy Thoroughbreds, opening in select theaters starting March 9th in just a few weeks. Two of the best young actresses today, Anya Taylor-Joy and Olivia Cooke, play upper-class teen girls in suburban Connecticut who rekindle their unlikely friendship after years of growing apart. When they get together again, they make plans to take out their stepfather – which they both hate. One of the big quotes on the poster describes this as “American Psycho meets Heathers,” which should make you very interested, or not. The full cast includes Paul Sparks, Francie Swift, and Kaili Vernoff. This does look damn good, and it did play at a bunch of festivals, so it may be worth checking out whenever it shows up at an art house theater near you. Watch out. ›››

  • First Trailer for LA Indie Comedy 'The Happys' Starring Amanda Bauer

First Trailer for LA Indie Comedy 'The Happys' Starring Amanda Bauer

    The Happys Trailer

“Listen to me – don’t come back.” Indican Pictures has debuted a trailer for an indie Los Angeles-set comedy titled The Happys, about a girl from the Midwest who moves into the trendy hipster neighborhood of Los Feliz. Tracy befriends the various weirdos from her neighborhood after a bad break up with hey boyfriend, meeting a recluse, a manager, a reporter, and a food truck chef, among others. Amanda Bauer (from “The Myth of the American Sleepover”) stars, and the ensemble cast includes Jack DePew, Janeane Garofalo, Melissa McBride, Rhys Ward, Arturo del Puerto, Cathy Ladman, Brian Jordan Alvarez, and Will Bethencourt. This seems like one of those cutesy LA movies that is all about how hard/easy it is to make friends in that town, perfectly depicting all the various quirks of Los Feliz. Oh, Los Angeles. Have fun. ›››

  • New International Trailer for 'Loving Pablo' Featuring Bardem & Cruz

New International Trailer for 'Loving Pablo' Featuring Bardem & Cruz

    Loving Pablo Trailer

“Let’s make a deal – you tell me your secrets, and I’ll tell you mine.” An international trailer has debuted for the film Loving Pablo, a romantic thriller (entirely in English) about the Colombian journalist who struck up a romantic relationship with notorious drug lord Pablo Escobar. The film premiered at last year’s Venice and Toronto Film Festivals, and should be in cinemas this year but still doesn’t have a US release date yet. Loving Pablo stars real-life couple Javier Bardem as Pablo Escobar, and Penélope Cruz as journalist Virginia Vallejo. The rest of the cast includes Peter Sarsgaard, Julieth Restrepo, and David Valencia. There have been a few Pablo Escobar films in the last few years, including The Infiltrator and Paradise Lost. I still don’t really get the obsession with him, oh well. This looks like one of the biggest films about him yet. ›››

  • New UK Trailer for Romance Film 'Midnight Sun' Starring Bella Thorne

New UK Trailer for Romance Film 'Midnight Sun' Starring Bella Thorne

    Midnight Sun Trailer

“This isn’t something you can just not tell me.” Studiocanal UK has released another official UK trailer for the cheesy romance film Midnight Sun, which is actually a remake of a Japanese film of the same name released in 2006 (Taiyô no uta). The story follows a young woman with a rare skin disease that, if exposed to the sun’s rays, she could potentially die so she stays indoors only going out at night. Hollywood took this and turned it into a super sappy romance that reminds me a bit of Everything, Everything, but it also just looks like an eye-rolling sweet story of young love. Bella Thorne stars, with Patrick Schwarzenegger, Rob Riggle, Quinn Shephard, Ken Tremblett, Jenn Griffin, and Nicholas Coombe. Watch below. ›››

  • Berlinale 2018: Fresh Filmmaking in Katharina Mückstein's 'L'Animale'

Berlinale 2018: Fresh Filmmaking in Katharina Mückstein's 'L'Animale'

    L'Animale Review

It’s exciting to stumble across a film late in the festival that turns out to be one of my favorites. L’Animale is an Austrian film playing at the Berlin Film Festival, the second feature film written & directed by Austrian filmmaker Katharina Mückstein. The film focuses on a teenage girl named Mati, who is wrapping up her last few weeks at high school just before taking the final exam and figuring out what’s next. L’Animale is mostly a coming-of-age story about this young woman recognizing her sexuality and accepting it, while also realizing she needs to grow up. In addition, it’s a much more deeper, meaningful film about honesty and fear and passion, and how so many struggle to speak their mind. Fresh filmmaking makes this really stand out. ›››
