First Trailer for Intriguing Retro Sci-Fi Project 'Perfect' Playing at SXSW

    Perfect Trailer

“Be careful, sweetheart, don’t get too close.” Whoa, this looks trippy. A trailer has debuted for a retro sci-fi film titled Perfect, premiering at the SXSW Film Festival this month. This experimental, creative project is about a boy who goes to a mysterious genetic-engineering clinic, only to discover the price of perfection will cost him everything, including his mind, body and his soul. Garrett Wareing stars as the boy, along with Abbie Cornish, Courtney Eaton, Tao Okamoto, Martin Sensmeier, Leonardo Nam, Alicia Sanz, and Maurice Compte. This looks very cool, I’m very curious to see more, and hopefully the reviews out of SXSW are good. The film is being presented by Steven Soderbergh, which is a good sign it’s unique. It seems a bit like “Black Mirror” meets Beyond the Black Rainbow-esque criticism of society’s pursuits of perfection. ›››

    The House of Tomorrow Trailer

“You can’t keep him locked up from the world.” Shout Factory has debuted the first official trailer for an indie comedy titled The House of Tomorrow, which premiered at the San Francisco Film Festival and a few other fests last year. From director Peter Livolsi, the film tells futurist, architect, and inventor R. Buckminster Fuller’s incredible story through two teens hoping to get laid, become punk gods, and survive high school. Starring talented young actors Asa Butterfield and Alex Wolff, along with Nick Offerman, Ellen Burstyn, Michaela Watkins, Maude Apatow, and the voice of Fred Armisen. This looks like a funky, funk little punk rock coming-of-age film about a kid learning to experience the world and all it has to offer outside of his idealistic future home. Don’t know where this came from but it’s cool, I’m very intrigued. ›››

First Full Trailer 'Dr. Seuss' The Grinch' Starring Benedict Cumberbatch

    Dr. Seuss' The Grinch Trailer

“Today we will do mean things, and we will do them in style.” Universal & Illumination have debuted the first official trailer for Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch, their new animated take on the classic Christmas story about the lovable green grump the Grinch. Benedict Cumberbatch voices the Grinch. No other voice cast members have been announced, Cumberbatch is the only one officially named. Description from Universal: “The Grinch tells the story of a cynical grump who goes on a mission to steal Christmas, only to have his heart changed by a young girl’s generous holiday spirit. Funny, heartwarming and visually stunning, it’s a universal story about the spirit of Christmas and the indomitable power of optimism.” Sounds pretty much like the same story we’ve all seen before (and I adore the classic animated TV version). Hopefully there’s something new about this! Take a look at the first footage below and let us know what you think about this. ›››

Official Trailer for Organ Harvesting, Wacky Horror 'Lowlife' from IFC

    Lowlife Trailer

“Father, show me the way as a spirit of justice.” IFC Midnight has launched an official trailer for a wacky horror/action comedy titled Lowlife, which first premiered at both the Fantasia Film Festival & FrightFest last year. From director Ryan Prows, this is about the sordid lives of an addict, an ex-con, and a luchador that collide when an organ harvesting caper goes very, very wrong. Starring Nicki Micheaux, Ricardo Adam Zarate, Jon Oswald, Shaye Ogbonna, Santana Dempsey, and Mark Burnham. This looks all kinds of weird and wacky and absurd and crazy, and perhaps fun? I don’t even know. Just watch the trailer. ›››

    Smear Horror Comedy Short

“This might feel a bit cold.” Watch out for what lies below. This short is so good! In honor of International Women’s Day, we’re featuring this fantastic horror comedy short Smear, written and directed by filmmaker Kate Herron (@iamkateherron), co-written by her writing partner Briony Redman. This short played at numerous festivals throughout 2017, and is now available online to watch for free. Smear is about a woman going for her first pap-smear test. It’s a horror comedy inspired by Gremlins, Tremors and Little Shop of Horrors, which should be more than enough references to get you to watch it. Plus, it’s just a great short with some honest humor and fun performances from the entire cast. More shorts like this, please! Have fun. ›››

  • Second Official Trailer for Netflix's Action Comedy 'Game Over, Man!'

Second Official Trailer for Netflix's Action Comedy 'Game Over, Man!'

    Game Over, Man!

“Shut up, we can take them!” Netflix has released a hilarious, second full-length trailer for the rowdy action comedy Game Over, Man!, the first feature made by the entire “Workaholics” group. The action film stars all three guys from “Workaholics” – Adam Devine, Anders Holm and Blake Anderson – and is directed by one of the creators of the show. We featured the first full trailer in January earlier this year, but with the film arriving later this month, it’s time for another reminder. The story follows three stoner gamer friends about to sign a big financing deal when their main investor is kidnapped by terrorists. These three “zeroes” become heroes (sort of) when the hotel they work at is taken hostage. Yeah, this definitely is the modern stoner/gamer version of Die Hard, and I’m so there for it. I just hope it’s actually good! Fire this up below. ›››

  • First Trailer for Instagram Fame Doc 'Social Animals' Playing at SXSW

First Trailer for Instagram Fame Doc 'Social Animals' Playing at SXSW

    Social Animals Trailer

“Do you know the rules of Instagram?” An official trailer has debuted for the documentary film Social Animals, which is premiering at the SXSW Film Festival this month. This doc profiles the lives, truths, and brazen desires for fame & followers of three Instagram celebrities: a daring bridge-climbing photographer, an aspiring swimsuit model from California, and a Midwestern girl next door. “They’re [all] looking for love, acceptance, and fame through their smartphones — and they have received it – they have exceeded 500,000 followers.” This film really makes me feel a bit uncomfortable, because this kind of obsession is not healthy, but it seems to be showing them as more than just fame-obsessed kids. I will also recommend watching the feature Ingrid Goes West as a nice companion piece with this film. Get a first look at the doc’s trailer below. ›››

  • Tessa Thompson as a Correctional Officer in First Trailer for 'Furlough'

Tessa Thompson as a Correctional Officer in First Trailer for 'Furlough'

    Furlough

“I think it’s best if we forget about this weekend…” A trailer has arrived for an indie film titled Furlough, which went under the working title Emergency Furlough while filming, made by director Laurie Collyer (Sherrybaby). The film stars Tessa Thompson as a rookie correctional officer at a prisoner. She spends half of her time caring for her mother, played by Whoopi Goldberg, and working at the prison. She gets a chance to prove her mettle when she’s tasked with accompanying a hell-raising inmate, played by Melissa Leo, on an emergency furlough to visit her dying mother, ending up on a hilarious road trip together. The cast includes Anna Paquin, Édgar Ramírez, and La La Anthony. I haven’t heard about this film before, but it looks good. It’s more of a dramedy than a drama, but seems to have plenty of heart driving the story. ›››

  • First Trailer for 'RBG' Documentary About Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg

First Trailer for 'RBG' Documentary About Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg

    RBG Doc Trailer

“She is a center of power – on and off the court.” Magnolia Pics has debuted the trailer for the documentary RBG, telling the life story of iconic U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who is still going strong even at 84 years old. This premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, and also stopped by the Miami Film Festival. RBG is a “revelatory documentary” exploring Ginsburg’s exceptional life and career. It packs in stories about her life from her friends, and interviews from all kinds of people, including the founders of the “Notorious R.B.G.” Tumblr blog. Leslie Felperin’s review from Sundance explains that RBG is: “like its subject… eminently sober, well-mannered, highly intelligent, scrupulous and just a teeny-weeny bit reassuringly dull.” It’s a fine film for those who want to be inspired by RBG’s awesomeness. Enjoy. ›››

  • Full US Trailer for 'Zama' About a Spanish Officer Stationed in Paraguay

Full US Trailer for 'Zama' About a Spanish Officer Stationed in Paraguay

    Zama Trailer

“He who did justice without drawing his sword.” Strand Releasing has debuted an official US trailer for the film Zama, adapted from Antonio Di Benedetto’s acclaimed novel, about a Spanish officer stationed in Paraguay separated from his wife and children. Daniel Giménez Cacho plays Don Diego de Zama, a real-life person who struggled with his mental and emotional state as isolation, bureaucratic setbacks, and self-destructive choices begin to compound themselves in his life. The cast includes Lola Dueñas, Matheus Nachtergaele, Juan Minujín, Nahuel Cano, Mariana Nunes, and Daniel Veronese. This received rave reviews from some critics at the festivals where it played last year, though it seems like an acquired taste. Some may be fully into it, others may be bored by it, but it certainly is stunning to look at. See below. ›››
