“I’m going to the rodeo.” “You don’t need to go ride today…” Sony Classics has debuted the second official trailer for the phenomenal film The Rider, which premiered at last year’s Cannes Film Festival and played at every other major film festival – Telluride, Toronto, Sundance. Written and directed by Chloe Zhao, this film is a “docu-drama” hybrid, and this trailer plays that up by pointing out “true stories”, and “real people.” The star of the film, Brady Jandreau, is a real cowboy and really hurt his head in real life, and the family in the film is also his real family. The Rider is about what happens when a cowboy is forced to figure out a different life. I saw this at the London Film Festival last year and loved it, and I can’t recommend it enough. It’s an exceptional film worth your time to discover. And if you need a trailer to convince you, give it a look. ›››

“I hate selfish people!” A first look clip has debuted for the new film from director Jody Hill, of The Foot Fist Way and Observe and Report, as well as “Eastbound & Down” and “Vice Principals”. The film is titled The Legacy of a Whitetail Deer Hunter, and it’s playing at the SXSW Film Festival this week. The only available descriptions for it say that it’s about a great hunter named Buck Ferguson who takes his trusted cameraman Don on an epic weekend adventure to reconnect with his young son. Of course, we can assume everything goes wrong. Though what exactly happens, we have to see it to find out. Josh Brolin stars with Danny McBride (who co-wrote the script) and Montana Jordan. It’s about an experimental sleep aid that sends a man’s mind one day into the future, where he’s the suspect in the disappearance of a girl he hasn’t met — yet. How’s that for a tricky time travel-esque plot? The film stars Ryan Munzert in the lead role, with Anna Shields, plus Briana Pozner, Rick Montgomery Jr., Christopher Sanchez, and Thea McCartan. “Stick to the script.” Annapurna has released the first trailer for Boots Riley’s insanely original, totally crazy film Sorry to Bother You, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival to some wild hype and rave reviews. If you’ve been waiting to find out what the heck this is about and why everyone went nuts over it, now is your chance to get a look. This trailer reveals a lot of the film, just to say, but I still love it. Lakeith Stanfield stars as a kid in Oakland who lands a telemarketer job and learns he can use his “white voice” to make it all the way to the top of the sales world. The coke-obsessed CEO is played by Armie Hammer, and everything he goes through to get there is absurdly hilarious to watch. The cast includes Danny Glover, Tessa Thompson, Patton Oswalt, Steven Yeun, Terry Crews, David Cross, Omari Hardwick, Marcella Bragio,Tom Woodruff Jr., Kate Berlant, Jermaine Fowler, Robert Longstreet, and Teresa Navarro. Filmmaker Rebecca Miller (The Private Lives of Pippa Lee, Maggie’s Plan), who just so happens to be Arthur Miller’s daughter, has created this documentary built around impromptu interviews shot over many years in the family home. She has crafted a very candid and personal portrait of her father, the Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright (of A Streetcar Named Desire, Death of a Salesman, The Crucible, A View from the Bridge) who was also a popular public figure – he testified before the House Un-American Activities Committee, and was married to Marilyn Monroe at one point. This doc feels like it’s much deeper than just a profile of Miller, considering there’s so much intimate footage of him, telling the real story of who he really was as a person. ›››

The film profiles the life and career of professional wrestler André Roussimoff, who gained notoriety in the 1980s as “Andre the Giant”. This HBO Sports documentary, made by “30 for 30” filmmaker Jason Hehir, is an “ambitious, wide-ranging film” that explores Andre’s upbringing in France, and his celebrated wrestling career in the WWE. We posted the first trailer for this in January, and it looks like a must-see main event for sports fans, especially wrestling fans. He was in The Princess Bride, and the film has interviews with Rob Reiner, Billy Crystal, and Robin Wright. Born in 1946 in France, André was diagnosed with acromegaly in his twenties, and he passed away in 1993. ›››

First Match stars Elvire Emanuelle as a determined teenage girl from Brooklyn who decides to join an all boys’ wrestling team at her high school, causing more trouble than she may be prepared to handle. Also starring Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Colman Domingo, Jharrel Jerome, & Jared Kemp. This looks great! Really, really great. Ice Dragon: Legend of the Blue Daisies is directed by Bruce Stacey, and it’s a musical adventure set in a mystical land. The story follows Melody, voiced by Rheal Rees, a gifted young dreamer and her friend Leif, voiced by Justin Debé. They must set aside their differences and use the power of magical Blue Daisies and an ancient song to save their world from an evil Ice Dragon. The voice also cast includes Bill Bray. The film is the first of a planned trilogy of films that will follow the adventures of Melody and Leif as they unlock the secrets and power of the song. This looks super low budget and not very impressive, but it may be entertaining to some. ›››

Alexandra Dean’s Bombshell: The Hedy Lamarr Story is a historical documentary biopic telling the other “secret” story of Hedy Lamarr most don’t know – that she and composer George Antheil helped develop a radio guidance system for Allied torpedoes, which used spread spectrum and frequency hopping technology to defeat the threat of jamming by the Axis powers.
