24's Legacy Reboot Brings Back a Key Character We Haven't Seen in Years

Ask fans of 24 what storyline they want to see continued, and odds are you’ll hear more than a few bring up that of Tony Almeida. Now, it looks as if those fans will have something to look forward to in the upcoming 24: Legacy.

Yes, the antagonist who became a good guy, then a dead guy, then a bad guy, then a locked-up-in-jail guy is returning to 24 for its new, Jack Bauer-less season. That’s according to TVLine, which reports that Carlos Bernard, who plays Almeida, has signed a deal to appear in the upcoming reboot.

“Tony Almeida is one of the most indelible personalities in the 24 universe, at times loyal and loving, other times an utterly amoral, ruthless mercenary,” said co-showrunners Manny Coto and Evan Katz. “Carlos Bernard has done an amazing job portraying this dark and conflicted character, and we couldn’t be more thrilled with his return to the show.”

Almeida was featured in one of the special features released with the event series Live Another Day. Other than that, he hasn’t been since on-screen since Season 7 in 2009, showing up in neither Season 8 nor Live Another Day.

He may not be the only character to return in Legacy. There have been indications that Mary Lynn Rajskub’s Chloe O’Brian could also be back, although that hasn’t yet been completely confirmed. And with Kiefer Sutherland signed on as an executive producer, it’s always possible Jack Bauer’s face could show up at some point.

As announced earlier this year, Legacy–featuring a new star in Corey Hawkins (Straight Outta Compton)–premieres immediately after the upcoming Super Bowl on February 5.

  • Mafia III Glitch Compilation Video Is Equal Parts Hilarious and Dumbfounding

Mafia III has been in people’s hands for a couple days now, and it hasn’t taken long for players to run into glitches. A collection of these have been rounded up in a new video that will not disappoint fans of ridiculousness.

The seven-minute compilation comes from YouTube user CrowbCat and starts out innocuously enough, with a Goat Simulator-esque glitch where a person’s body is swinging around near the top of a building. From there, we get the more mundane things, like falling through the ground, to some really bizarre ones–a cop falls into the water, only to rise up and suddenly be standing on it as if it were land.

Elsewhere in the video, we see some of these glitches turn less funny, at least for the player, as a mission fails because of one. Also highlighted are some issues with the cover system and AI.

My personal favorite moment comes at the 1:42 mark, when we see a mirror… malfunction. It doesn’t correctly reflect protagonist Lincoln Clay in a weird sequence that’s vaguely reminiscent of Cooper’s camera test in the Twin Peaks movie.

Mafia III (as well as its mobile game tie-in) released this past Friday. We didn’t get review code long before release, but we do have a review-in-progress to give you some early impressions. The game launched with a 30 FPS cap on PC, but that has since been resolved through an update.

  • Watch Marvel's Iron Fist Punch Everyone in Sight in Teaser for Netflix Series

Marvel and Netflix are teaming up once again for another series featuring one of the comic publisher’s ground-level heroes: Iron Fist. During a panel at New York Comic-Con, Marvel revealed clips of the upcoming series, along with another teaser trailer, which was revealed to be hitting the streaming service in March. You can check out the teaser for yourself below.

Finn Jones (Game of Thrones) plays the titular character, also known as Danny Rand, who is a martial arts master with a few superhuman abilities. He channels mystical powers to make his strikes more powerful than any human is capable of. The series also features Jessica Henwick (Game of Thrones) as Colleen Wing, who was a friend of Rand during his early days as Iron Fist, in the comics.

Back at San Diego Comic-Con, the first teaser was revealed, giving fans a bit of insight to the tone for the upcoming show. This second teaser doesn’t hold back any punches, pun intended.

Marvel’s Iron Fist will be coming to Netflix on March 17.

  • John Wick 2 Trailer Brings The Matrix's Neo and Morpheus Back Together

The first full trailer for John Wick: Chapter 2 was released today at New York Comic-Con. In it, we get a brief taste of a scene between Keanu Reeves and Laurence Fishburne, bringing together two of the main characters from The Matrix trilogy.

As you’d expect from a John Wick trailer that lasts more than a few seconds, it features lots of people being shot by Wick, as well as a vow to kill everyone who gets in his way. Lance Reddick also proves himself to still be a very delightful concierge.

The trailer shows a lot of Common, who’s one of the major additions to the movie and one of the many people that Wick will shoot at. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, we see Wick’s new dog who is, as suspected, incredibly adorable.

John Wick: Chapter 2 arrives in theaters on February 10, 2017.

  • Wasteland 3 Funded in Just 3 Days; Talking Car Among Its New Stretch Goals

Wasteland 3 has reached its crowdfunding goal, raising over $2.75 million in just over three days.

“You are all amazing and we can’t thank you enough,” reads a message from InXile Entertainment boss Brian Fargo. “Without you, we would simply not be able to maintain our independence and keep fully true to our visions for great RPGs that you love. We also cannot fail to mention those who have chosen to invest in the financial performance of the game–their contributions have also been invaluable. Your trust and support means the world to us. So kick back, put your red boots up, and have some squeezins to celebrate.”

The crowdfunding campaign earlier this week, shortly after the game was first revealed. It didn’t necessarily come as a surprise considering the success of Wasteland 2‘s crowdfunding–it raised $2.9 million on Kickstarter after asking for only $900,000–but it’s still notable that the game is on the way after fans had to wait 26 years for a sequel to the original Wasteland. A total of 13,522 people have pledged $2,755,905 to Wasteland 3 as of this writing.

With the goal met, InXile has revealed the first three stretch goals extending to $3.1 million. Considering how quickly the $2.75 million was raised and the fact there are 26 days still to go, it’s easy to see these coming to fruition. Here’s how InXile describes them:

    • $2.85M: 37 Pieces of Flair — We unlock further Ranger customization, which could include multiple body types, more heads, and more hairstyles. Plus we’ll show items that your Ranger has equipped (gear like shovels, binoculars, etc.) on their models.
    • $3M: Car Companion (Codename: Morningstar) — We add a talking car companion! Morningstar is an AI built to serve President Reagan, but he’ll help you both in your travels and during combat, plus he’ll give you well-timed advice on how to wipe out all the dirty commies out there.
    • $3.1M: Customizable Ranger Squad Insignia — At the start of the game, you get to customize a Ranger Squad insignia for your team, which will show up on your Ranger Base as well as elsewhere in the game (on flags, for example).

InXile is also now allowing fans to back the project through PayPal, which you can do on the game’s CrowdOx page. The rewards offered there as the same as those on Fig, although Fig presents the public with the opportunity to invest in the project in return for equity.

Wasteland 3 introduces co-op support, vehicles, and more, which you can read about in our initial coverage. InXile has already released the first gameplay video for the game, which isn’t due out until 2019 on PC, Xbox One, and PS4. You can watch it above.

New Mafia 3 PC Patch Adds 60 FPS and Unlimited FPS Options [UPDATE]

[UPDATE] The Mafia III PC patch that adds new frame rate options is going live today at 3 PM PT/6 PM ET, 2K announced on Twitter.

PC players: our patch that includes 30, 60 & unlimited fps options will go live at 3PM PT.

    — Mafia Game (@mafiagame) October 8, 2016

    The original story is below.

For the first time in six years, Mafia fans now have a new entry in the series to play, as Mafia III launches today on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. There was some tough news for PC players yesterday, however, when 2K confirmed that the game would be capped at 30 FPS at launch.

Now, 2K has reported back to say it has a patch in the works now that includes 30, 60, and unlimited FPS options from the game’s video menu. There are “other improvements” for the PC version of Mafia III also included in this update.

The update is now in testing. Should everything go to plan, the Mafia III PC patch should go out this weekend. Keep checking back with GameSpot for more on exactly when the patch comes out.

Mafia III is a sequel to 2010’s Mafia II. The new game is set in 1968 and stars Vietnam War veteran Lincoln Clay in a story of revenge against the Italian mob. The game takes place in a version of New Orleans called New Bordeaux.

GameSpot did not receive a full copy of Mafia III before launch, so we don’t have a review available yet. Keep checking back in the days ahead for more on our thoughts on the game.

For now, you can check out an extended gameplay video above, in which we show off the opening act of Mafia III.

2K has also released a note on Twitter celebrating Mafia III’s launch. The full text is copied below.

To #Mafia3 fans everywhere: Thank you – and welcome to New Bordeaux. pic.twitter.com/RmgjHb1J7N

    — Mafia Game (@mafiagame) October 7, 2016

“It’s been more than six years since you visited Empire Bay in Mafia II. Now, thanks to the tireless work of the whole team at Hangar 13 and 2K, Mafia III is finally here! We’ve pushed Mafia’s trademark cinematic storytelling in a whole new direction with an open-world game. And we think you’ll experience that from the second you start playing.

“The only thing that’s missing now: you. How will you exact revenge against the Italian mob in Mafia III. Which lieutenants will you support on your rise to the top of the criminal underworld? Our motto is, ‘Every player story is unique’ — And we can’t wait to hear yours.

“Thank you for putting your trust in us and allowing us to continue doing what we do. Welcome to New Bordeaux.”

The nearly three-minute-long video features our introduction to the Justice Society of America, which is comprised of characters like Stargirl, Dr. Mid-Nite, and Commander Steel. Lance Henriksen makes a brief appearance as Obsidian, though sadly we don’t get to hear him put his wonderful voice to use.

Oh, and there’s a conflict with Nazis teased, Albert Einstein gets punched in the face, zombies show up, and an ominous message from Barry Allen is delivered. There’s quite a lot to take in.

Legends of Tomorrow‘s new season debuts this coming Thursday, October 13, at 8 PM ET on The CW.

  • Forest Whitaker Joins Marvel's Black Panther Movie

Forest Whitaker Joins Marvel's Black Panther Movie

Oscar-winner Forest Whitaker will appear in Marvel’s Black Panther movie, the film studio has announced. In a statement, Marvel confirmed Whitaker’s involvement, explaining that he will play the character Zuri, described as an “elder statesman in Wakanda.”

In the same announcement, Marvel also confirmed that Daniel Kaluuya (Sicario), Winston Duke (Person of Interest), and Florence Kasumba (Captain America: Civil War) have joined the cast as well.

    3140388-blackpanther1.jpg

Black Panther is directed by Ryan Coogler (Fruitvale Station, Creed) and also stars Chadwick Boseman as T’Challa, Michael B. Jordan as Erik Killmonger. Lupita Nyong’o (Star Wars) plays Nakia and Danai Guira (The Walking Dead) will play Okoye. Both are members of the Dora Milaje, a team of all-female bodyguards.

Kasumba’s character, Ayo, is also a member of the Dora Milaje; you might remember that she played the same role in Captain America: Civil War. Kaluuya plays W’Kbai, who is described by Marvel as a “confidant” of T’Challa. For his part, Duke plays M’Baku, a leader of a rival Wakanda tribe.

Black Panther comes to theaters on February 16, 2018.

In a recent interview, Boseman explained that Black Panther was a different hero to the fast-talking, quip-laden likes of Iron Man or Ant-Man, and this would influence the film. “For me, most of the time the darker superhero movies are the ones that I gravitate towards, that I love the most,” he said. “I’m glad that the tone of [Black Panther] may be a little grittier.

  • Resident Evil: The Final Chapter Movie Is Scariest Ever, Director Says

A new trailer for Resident Evil: The Final Chapter was released this week at New York Comic-Con, showing off some intense zombie-action and teasing out story elements. Director Paul W.S. Anderson said during a panel that he expects The Final Chapter to be the scarier than any other entry in the series or any film he’s ever made. Now, he’s spoken to Collider to share more details on the film’s scare factor.

He told the site that his 1997 sci-fi/horror movie Event Horizon so far has been the scariest movie he’s made, “and this movie is scarier than that,” he said about The Final Chapter.

“It’s deliberately a return to I think the first Resident Evil movie was probably the most intense and the scariest of the franchise because it was all in the hive so it had a kind of claustrophobic intensity to it, it very much like a haunted house movie like inspired by The Shining orThe Haunting you know it had that kind of feel that you were trapped in this space with bad things that were gonna happen to you,” Anderson explained.

“This movie the last fifty percent of it is all in that same environment with that same intensity and that same scariness but even the stuff earlier in Washington D.C. there are some great… I mean there are some of the best scares that I’ve ever directed,” he added.

Anderson recalled watching Event Horizon with an audience and seeing some people turn away and scream because they could not handle the scares. It was a movie that was so harrowing and intense that “people just couldn’t bear to watch,” and The Final Chapter has a similar spirit, he said.

Read the full Collider interview here.

The Final Chapter hits theaters on January 27, 2017. Milla Jovovich stars as Alice, alongside Ali Larter as Claire Redfield and Ruby Rose in the role of Abigail. Anderson made all of the previous Resident Evil movies with Jovovich, his wife, in the lead role.

The next Resident Evil video game, Resident Evil 7, is scheduled to come three days before The Final Chapter arrives in theaters, on January 24, 2017 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.
