  • Valve Developing New Vive Controller

Valve is working on a new controller for Vive, the virtual reality headset it developed in partnership with Taiwanese tech company HTC. The controllers were shown at the Steam Dev Days conference. Although the event wasn’t open to the public, developers in attendance Tweeted pictures of the new controller.

As of yet, there aren’t many details on what new features the controller will deliver, but based on images it seems that users will able to open their hands without dropping it.

Presumably, the controllers will be able to track when this is happening and replicate hand movements and finger articulation with greater accuracy. However, this has not been officially confirmed by Valve and is speculation on our part.

Speaking to Kotaku, Valve’s Doug Lombardi said it is “gathering feedback on the design prototype at this point.” Asked about release dates, pricing, and whether those that have the original Vive controllers will get a discount on the new ones, Valve said it will “have more details soon.”

Vive’s controllers was what distinguished it from the Oculus Rift headset. The controllers and two base stations allow software to track your movement over a maximum area of 15 square feet and, in GameSpot’s Vive review, were described as “a big step up from traditional gamepads when it comes to playing in VR.”

“Vive’s strongest selling point is how it marries freedom of movement and intuitive controls with a capable headset,” said Peter Brown. “Where Rift feels like a VR headset built for mainstream consumption, Vive caters to the hardcore crowd that will stop at nothing to get the best VR experience.”

Oculus, meanwhile, is set to launch its Touch controllers on December 6. Preorders for the Touch opened on October 10 and those interested will have to purchase yours before the end of October 27 to keep their priority status. People who preorder get two free games: VR Sports Challenge and The Unspoken.

  • Jurassic World 2's Story Will Cover Animal Abuse and More

Jurassic World 2's Story Will Cover Animal Abuse and More

For a while now, Jurassic World producer Colin Trevorrow has been teasing that Jurassic World 2‘s story wouldn’t necessarily be about more dinosaurs or bigger and more ferocious ones. Instead, Jurassic World 2 will be a “different kind of film” that touches on a “much larger story about our relationship with these animals,” Trevorrow said. Trevorrow shed some new light on that during a speaking event at the Sitges Film Festival in Spain, saying the dinos will be a “parable” for the treatment of animals today.

“The dinosaurs will be a parable of the treatment animals receive today: the abuse, medical experimentation, pets, having wild animals in zoos like prisons, the use the military has made of them, animals as weapons,” Trevorrow said, as reported by El Mundo and translated by Time.

    No Caption Provided

He added that the film will be “more complex” in its subject matter.

Spanish filmmaker J.A. Bayona (The Orphanage) is directing Jurassic World 2, while Trevorrow is on-board as a producer. Trevorrow explained why Bayona is a good fit for the sequel.

“The second part will be a very different movie that will explore new paths,” he said. “For that reason, it was clear that it needed to be Bayona who would direct it, in order to have it grow and evolve with his very personal vision.”

Trevorrow has also described Jurassic World 2 as being “more suspenseful and scary” than the first movie. It’s set to hit theaters on June 22, 2018, with Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard set to return in their starring roles.

Jurassic World is the fourth biggest movie of all time, bringing in $1.6 billion at the global box office. In addition to producing Jurassic World 2, Trevorrow will direct Star Wars: Episode IX.

  • Hitman's Season 1 Finale Release Date and Location Detailed

Square Enix has announced the season finale of Hitman will launch on October 31 and take place in Hokkaido, Japan. The mission Agent 47 will be embarking on is called “Situs Inversus” and is described as “the culmination of everything players will have learnt in terms of both gameplay and story.”

“The Hokkaido location is set within the grounds of the hyper-exclusive GAMA private hospital and resort,” Square Enix says in a press release. “This secluded facility is a fusion of Japanese beauty and cutting-edge technology, featuring its own Zen gardens, organic sushi restaurant and traditional Japanese hot spring. Agent 47 must locate two targets in this climactic Season Finale.”

In the trailer you can see Agent 47 infiltrating what looks to be a medical research centre wearing a slick black outfit and red surgeon’s mask, which is probably making him quite conspicuous. Check it out below.

IO Interactive has previously said that it’s plan for Hitman on PS4, Xbox One, and PC is to have three seasons. In a recent interview with GameSpot, lead writer Michael Vogt said that the story is “just getting started” when Season 1 ends.

“We wanted to do a really ambitious story line that would span several seasons and also build this ensemble cast,” Vogt explained. “In the old games, the targets were always the most interesting characters, but then you’d just kill them off instantly and move on to the next one. And now we wanted to build a much bigger main cast that will survive for much longer.

“The story’s really only beginning [with the first season],” he continued. “Season 1 is the first act in a feature film. You know all the characters, you know the stakes, you know the dilemma, but it’s only getting started.”

The complete first season of Hitman is getting a physical edition in January. It will cost $60 and includes every update and piece of content that’s been added to the game in Season 1, in addition to some special bonuses. You can check out all that’s included in Hitman: The Complete First Season here.

  • Battlefield 1's New Rent-a-Server Program Won't be Available at Launch

Battlefield 1's New Rent-a-Server Program Won't be Available at Launch

Electronic Arts has announced that Battlefield 1, like past games in the shooter series, will have a “rent-a-server” program that players can use to host their own private or public matches with customized rulesets. However, EA is changing things up this year–and it sounds like it will be for the better.

In a blog post, EA explained that Battlefield 1 servers will be available to rent “close after launch” through the in-game store. Pricing was not specified. The big change with Battlefield 1 is that, in the past, EA worked with third-party companies to provide servers, but this time, the publisher is handling that itself.

    No Caption Provided

EA explained that this should benefit players in a number of ways, one of which is EA will be able to “secure the quality of the actual hardware.”

“Since the servers come from the same provider, it will give everyone the same uniform experience. Furthermore, if you have questions or need help, you will be able to reach out to EA Support directly instead of third-party support,” the company explained.

As was the case in the past, Battlefield 1 players who rent a server can customize the server to their liking. They can determine the server’s name and choose the maps and modes playable on it, among other things. EA cautioned that it “might” restrict the number of modes available at launch and instead roll them out later based on feedback and “other circumstances.”

“But you can expect that we’ll keep adding customization options and UI design throughout 2016,” it said.

Battlefield 1’s official release date is October 21, but EA/Origin Access subscribers can start playing a portion of the game’s multiplayer and single-player modes tomorrow, October 13. People who buy the $80 Early Enlister Edition can jump in on October 18, while everyone can start playing a few days later.

Keep checking back with GameSpot in the days ahead for more on Battlefield 1.

  • New Battlefield 1 Single-Player Videos Show Off Five "War Stories"

EA has released teaser videos for Battlefield 1‘s five “War Stories,” which are the game’s main single-player chapters. The videos were posted on the Battlefield YouTube account recently. They are shown as unlisted, but someone on NeoGAF was able to find them; you can see them all below.

As announced previously, Battlefield 1’s five War Stories are called Friends in High Places, Nothing is Written, Through Mud and Blood, Avanti Savoia, and The Runner. Each campaign puts you into the boots of a different soldier and your tasks involve things like driving tanks and flying planes. One chapter, Nothing Is Written, sees players assuming the role of a Bedouin woman who meets up with the legendary Lawrence of Arabia. You can see the full descriptions for each chapter at the bottom of this post.

EA Access is available on Xbox One and Origin Access is for PC. Battlefield 1 is also coming to PlayStation 4, but there is no version of EA’s subscription service on Sony’s platform. However, as stated, PS4 users can pick up the Early Enlister edition to jump in a few days early.

For more on how the EA/Origin Access “Play First Trial” works, including what content is available during the early play period, check out GameSpot’s previous report.

In other news about Battlefield 1, developer DICE has detailed the game’s weekly challenges.

    Battlefield 1 War Stories:

    FRIENDS IN HIGH PLACES

The allies are losing the war in the air. Britain struggles to compete with the German aces and the average lifetime of a combat pilot is 17 days. You must face these bleak odds and take to the skies for a noble fight over the western front. Intense dogfights, unexpected encounters, and a story of friendship await you.

    NOTHING IS WRITTEN

In the Middle East deserts, Arab tribes rebel against the oppression of the Ottoman Empire. The Empire’s devastating artillery engage rebel forces wielding rifles from horseback. As a Bedouin warrior working alongside the legendary Lawrence of Arabia, you must find a way to take on the technologically superior enemy and destroy a deadly railgun.

    THROUGH MUD AND BLOOD

In the autumn of 1918, British forces prepare for a mass assault on the town of Cambrai, France. With tank support, Allied Command believes a breakthrough is a certainty. But the Mark V tank has one major flaw: it is not reliable. Join a dysfunctional tank crew who battle their way behind enemy lines as they learn to work together.

    AVANTI SAVOIA

Italy and the Austro-Hungarian Empire are deadlocked among the Alps. Braced by snow-capped mountains, neither side can find a way to dislodge their enemy. Meanwhile, the Italian mountaineer regiment Arditi prepares an unorthodox assault. Don your Arditi armor and head up a mountainside as Italian and Austrian forces clash over a strategic fort.

    THE RUNNER

The British Empire intends to open a new front to the war with an unprecedented naval invasion of the Ottoman homeland. The ships gathered for the Gallipoli Landings–the D-Day of World War 1–carry over half a million men. As an Anzac runner you’ll witness the heat of epic bombardments and a beach landing, as well as covert deliveries of urgent life-or-death messages across the frontline.

  • New Titanfall 2 Trailer Promises Lots of Variety in Single-Player Campaign

Respawn Entertainment has released a new trailer for Titanfall 2, laying out its vision for the single-player campaign. In the video, which you can watch below, game director Steve Fukuda says one of the strengths of the single-player is its “sheer variety.”

“You can get different Titan loadouts and experience the different flavours of Titans in the multiplayer, in the single-player,” added designer Mackey McCandlish.

According to Respawn, Titanfall 2’s campaign will also give players a different pace of gameplay outside of the big, bombastic set-pieces.

“We also have low-key moments where you’re just progressing through the environment and exploring. You’re using your pilot mobility,” it said.

There’s also some light puzzle solving that, in the video, is built around a pilot’s ability to run along walls, leap around environments, and double jump while avoiding obstacles in the environment.

Titanfall 2’s release date has been confirmed as October 28. It will be available on PC, PS4, and Xbox One. The game’s full story-driven campaign is one of the major new additions.

“Titanfall 2’s single-player is crafted to dive deeper into the Titanfall universe, exploring the unique bonds between Pilot and Titan, and taking full advantage of the movement and combat, to deliver a feeling a feeling of being unstoppable together,” EA’s Devin Bennett previously said.

Respawn Entertainment has confirmed the Angel City map will be available for Titanfall 2’s multiplayer mode in December. Angel City was one of the more popular maps in the original Titanfall, and those that purchase the sequel will be able to download the newest version of it for free.

  • Get Beyond Good & Evil for Free on PC Right Now

Ubisoft has been giving away a free PC game every month since June, and now players can grab Beyond Good & Evil at no cost. The beloved action-adventure game was announced as October’s free game earlier this month.

To claim your digital copy, visit the Ubisoft Club page on the company’s website, click “Get the Game Now,” and log into or create a UPlay account. After that, you can launch UPlay, download and install your game, and start playing.

A sequel to Beyond Good & Evil has been teased over the past couple weeks by creator Michel Ancel. He’s posted several images of concept art, including ones that feature a bearded man with a young pig, an anthropomorphic shark, and a rhinoceros with dreadlocks. Ubisoft confirmed the sequel is in development last week.

“If you’ve been waiting for news about BG&E … Well here you go! We are delighted to confirm that Michel Ancel is currently working with the Ubisoft Montpellier studio on a new Beyond Good & Evil game,” Ubisoft announced.

The original Beyond Good & Evil was remastered and released on Xbox 360 and PS3 in 2011. The original received a score of 8.3/10 in GameSpot’s review. Critic Jeff Gerstmann concluded, “While the game’s repetitive nature and short length take away from its overall impact, Beyond Good & Evil is a fantastic-looking game that tells its story well. It may be short enough to rent and complete in a day or two, but fans of action adventure games will find enough to love in the game’s overall design to make it worth purchasing.”

  • Battlefield 1's Weekly Challenges Detailed

Battlefield 1 developer DICE has detailed weekly challenges for the game, which will take the form of Medals that have “specific unlock criteria” but can be unlocked “whether you’re an ace pilot or a trusted team player.”

“Battlefield veterans will notice some changes in how the commemorations work this time around. Each Medal still has a specific unlock criteria,” DICE explained on the Battlefield website. “In Battlefield 1 you have the freedom to choose which medals to pursue.”

There will be a total of five Medals to unlock per week and new challenges will be rotated in at the end of the seven day period. Players can pick one of these and track progress for it. Switching to another game mode or another class will allow you to pursue another Medal without losing progress.

“This goes hand in hand with the philosophy of choice in Battlefield 1,” the studio said. “To find something that caters to your play style at any given moment, you are free to choose which Medal you’re currently most interested in tracking. You can only track one Medal at the time, but if you change game mode or role you can switch focus and go for another Medal. Your progression will be kept as long as the weekly reset hasn’t happened yet.”

To earn a medal, there are “three or five” stages to a challenge that must be completed. Naturally, each new level is “harder or more extensive” than the previous one. DICE highlighted this by focusing on the Medic’s “Order of Hippocrates” Medal.

“Here, the stages tie into skills that make a good Medic, i.e. getting 20 kills with Medic weapons, healing teammates 100 times, and completing 20 revives. You’ll be informed by the tracker when a stage is complete.”

The “Legion of Glory” Medal, on the other hand, was used as an example of excelling in multiple disciplines to earn a Medal. For this, you’ll need to “play as different classes and support your squad by doing repairs, heals, and resupplies.”

There are 34 Medals in total and unlocking each one will also score you an XP bonus. Each Medal can be obtained 100 times.

Battlefield 1 launches out on October 21 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. EA/Origin Access members can start playing on October 13, while people who buy the Early Enlister edition can get in on October 18.
