  • Captain America Launches His Secret Empire

Captain America Launches His Secret Empire

Captain America has gone through some changes. Back in June, it was revealed how his history and character have been altered. Unbeknownst to the Avengers and civilian populace in the Marvel Universe, Cap is actually loyal to Hydra, the terrorist organization. Kobik, a cosmic cube that gained sentience, rewrote Steve Rogers’ past. He now follows orders from the Red Skull, although he is forming his own plans for making America a stronger and better place with Hydra’s ideals implemented.

Maria Hill has just been relieved of her duties as the director of SHIELD. This opens the door for Captain America to push forward his plans for a Secret Empire, the upcoming arc unfolding in Marvel Comics.

There will be some spoilers from Captain America: Steve Rogers #10 and Civil War II: The Oath #1, both written by Nick Spencer.

Steve Rogers pushed for Sharon Carter to be appointed the new head of SHIELD. Because of the new SHIELD Act passed in Congress, someone the American public fully trusted needed to be put in place. The new law gives SHIELD immense power within the United States if a national state of emergency was declared. There is concern with the possible abuse of power, which is why many felt Captain America could be trusted in the position. It is believed he is someone who will stand up for the people and get things done.

Tony Stark suffered an injury during the conflict known as Civil War II. This gave Rogers a need to visit Stark in his coma and make his confession to his old friend.

Steve Rogers truly believes his plan to rebuild America is what the country needs. During Civil War II, an Inhuman with the ability to see the future showed Rogers what America would be like under his rule. With Rogers and Hydra in command, he saw children pledging allegiance to a flag with Hydra’s logo. He saw reports of the American economy soaring to new heights. He also saw camps set up for those who were different and those who opposed his way. He also saw an army of Hydra soldiers assembled in front of a battered Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C.

The scary thing is, the heroes and the world trusts Captain America. By the time they discover what he’s been turned into and what he has planned, it might be too late for them. The upcoming Secret Empire event will address the outcome of Cap’s plan. The teasers suggest several Marvel heroes will be pulled into the conflict. We’ll have to keep reading to find out how this will play out and whether or not Captain America will be reverted to his true heroic self.

Avengers: Infinity War Adds Another Character From Guardians Of The Galaxy

The 2018 Avengers film, Infinity War, is already set to have a huge cast. Now, it’s grown again.

Pom Klementieff, who plays Mantis in this year’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, has confirmed that she will appear in Infinity War. She confirmed this on Instagram (via Entertainment Weekly), sharing a picture of herself wearing an Infinity War hat and another of her character, Mantis, on the cover of Avengers #123. That second photo was tagged for Atlanta, Georgia, which is where Infinity War is filming right now.

Additionally, Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), Captain America (Chris Evans), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), and Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) will be in the movie.

“I don’t think anybody who is a current [Marvel] character is not going to be in Infinity War [laughs],” Bautista recently said. “That’s just my opinion. I haven’t gotten confirmation on who all is going to be in the film, but I think that they’re really going to go all-out on this.”

Infinity War hits theaters on May 4, 2018. It will be followed by an untitled Avengers film in 2019.

  • Jurassic World 2 Director Teases Start Of Production With New Image

Jurassic World 2 Director Teases Start Of Production With New Image

The massive success of 2015’s Jurassic World showed that there was still huge interest in the long-running rampaging dinosaur franchise. Jurassic World 2 is about to start shooting, and director JA Bayona (Orphan) has tweeted a first image from the production. Check it out below:

    No Caption Provided

Bayona accompanied the picture with the words “Getting ready for the journey.” The movie stars Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard once more, with Jurassic World director Colin Trevorrow producing and co-writing. The movie is set to hit theaters on June 22, 2018.

In an interview last October, Trevorrow stated that the film would be more terrifying than its predecessor and would tap into Bayona’s experience in the horror genre. “It will be more suspenseful and scary,” he said. “It’s just the way it’s designed; it’s the way the story plays out. I knew I wanted Bayona to direct it long before anyone ever heard that was a possibility, so the whole thing was just built around his skill set.”

Trevorrow went on to state that the filmmakers are not necessarily going “bigger” when it comes to the size of the dinosaurs and the action. “I don’t think that bigger, better dinosaurs or bigger, more epic-in-scope action sequences are what people are necessarily looking for from this franchise and what they love about it,” he said.

Jurassic World currently stands as the fourth biggest movie of all time, bringing in $1.6 billion at the global box office. It was the first new entry in the series since 2001’s Jurassic Park III. The franchise is based on Michael Crichton’s 1990 novel.

  • New Guardians Of The Galaxy Game Coming From Deus Ex Dev – Report

New Guardians Of The Galaxy Game Coming From Deus Ex Dev – Report

Last week, Square Enix announced that Deus Ex developer Eidos Montreal was working on a new Avengers game with Tomb Raider studio Crystal Dynamics. Some wondered what that might mean for the future of Deus Ex. The series is now reportedly “on hiatus,” with Eidos working on a new Guardians of the Galaxy title. This is all according to Eurogamer’s sources.

The untitled Guardians of the Galaxy game is reportedly “in the early stages of production,” according to Eurogamer.

    No Caption Provided

When Square Enix announced its partnership with Marvel, the companies said it was for multiple games, so Guardians of the Galaxy could be one of the other ones. When the news of the Square Enix-Marvel deal broke last week, Kotaku editor Jason Schreier tweeted that Eidos was working on the Avengers game and “another” title based on a Marvel franchise.

A Guardians of the Galaxy game from Telltale is currently in development and is scheduled to come out this year. A release date hasn’t been announced, but launching close to the new movie, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is coming out in May, so a release close to then would seem to make sense.

The new Avengers game from Eidos and Crystal Dynamics is still a long time off, it seems, as Square Enix has said it won’t even talk more about it until 2018. That’s also the year that the new Avengers film, Infinity War, comes out. Presumably the new, unannounced Guardians of the Galaxy game would come out later.

GameSpot has contacted Square Enix in an attempt to get more details. We’ll update this post with anything we hear back.

  • PSA: Last Chance To Play Halo Wars 2's Free Open Beta

The Halo Wars 2 open beta is coming to an end soon. The free beta, available on Xbox One and PC, started on January 20 and wraps up tomorrow, January 30, so now is your last chance to play.

It is free and open to everyone–download it via these Xbox.com links: Xbox One, PC.

Unlike the first Halo Wars 2 beta from June 2016, this second one lets you try the card-based mode, Blitz. You build a deck and then deploy units in an attempt to capture and hold control points to score points. There are 1v1, 2v2, and 3v3 options, and the beta supports matchmaking.

Progress from the Halo Wars 2 Blitz beta does not carry forward to the full game, but you can earn two card packs, one for logging in and the second for completing your first match (win or lose).

Watch the video above and read this in-depth blog post from 343 to get an incredibly detailed breakdown of how Blitz works.

The players who rack up the highest scores across Xbox One and PC in various playlists will earn card packs–you can see the current rankings here.

The first Halo Wars 2 beta from last year was extended, so it’s possible that will happen with this one, but that is no confirmed.

Halo Wars 2 launches in full on February 21, though people who buy the $80 Ultimate Edition can start playing on February 17. It is an Xbox Play Anywhere title, so buying it digitally on one platform gets you access to the other for free. All progress, including saves and achievements, is available on each platform.

  • Xbox Boss Hopes For More Cross-Play Games, Talks Project Scorpio

Xbox Boss Hopes For More Cross-Play Games, Talks Project Scorpio

Earlier this week, Microsoft rolled out cross-play multiplayer support for Gears of War 4, allowing Xbox One users to play against people on PC. Now, Xbox boss Phil Spencer has spoken out to say he hopes more games support cross-play in the future, though Halo Wars 2 won’t be among them.

“I hope so,” Spencer said to a fan (via DualShockers) who asked if more games will support cross-play. “That’s our goal.”

    No Caption Provided

He added that Halo Wars 2 does not support cross-play “for some longer-standing engine reasons.” But as Microsoft looks to the future, “cross-play is a good feature,” Spencer said.

Last year at E3, Microsoft confirmed Halo Wars 2 would not have cross-play support at launch but teased that the feature could come as a post-launch update.

In other Halo Wars 2 news, an open beta for the RTS sequel is going on right now on Xbox One and PC.

Also on Twitter, Spencer was asked about Microsoft’s Project Scorpio console. Specifically, someone wanted to know when the mega-powerful system would be available to preorder. It remains to be seen when that will be, but Spencer says you may want to wait until you see games running for it.

Recently, Spencer said he played games for the first time on Scorpio and said they “played great.”

    No Caption Provided

Finally, Spencer reiterated on Twitter that the Xbox One Elite controller will work on Scorpio. This is no surprise, given basically all Xbox One peripherals (and games) will work with Scorpio.

Scorpio goes on sale this holiday, though its release date and price have not been announced yet.

In other news, a developer said this week that Scorpio is a “full blown next-gen machine,” compared to the “half-assed” PS4 Pro.

Mass Effect: Andromeda — No Crossplay, PC Version Has Uncapped Frame Rate

With Mass Effect: Andromeda‘s release coming up in March, BioWare continues to reveal new information about the spacefaring RPG. A number of BioWare developers sounded off on the game in recent days on Twitter and DualShockers has a roundup of what was said.

One of the notable responses was from producer Fernando Melo, who confirmed that there won’t be cross-play support for the game’s multiplayer mode. He also confirmed that Andromeda’s multiplayer will be peer-to-peer, as was the case with Mass Effect 3.

DualShockers also reports that BioWare confirmed that Andromeda’s PC version will have an uncapped frame rate, which is a nice option to have for those who want it. This is not a big surprise, as BioWare GM Aaryn Flynn said the PC version would have an uncapped frame rate earlier this month on NeoGAF.

Andromeda launches on March 21 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. Earlier this week, BioWare released a new cinematic trailer that showed off some of the teammate characters and the bad guy, Archon–watch it here. For more on the trailer and another new one, check out the story below.

  • Resident Evil: The Final Chapter Box Office Report

[UPDATE] According to Box Office Mojo, The Final Chapter pulled in $5.1 million at the US box office on Friday, behind A Dog’s Purpose ($5.3 million) and Split ($7.9 million).

    The original story is below.

The newest video game movie, Resident Evil: The Final Chapter, is out now. It opened on Thursday evening and made $1 million from those early screenings in the US, according to Variety.

It’s expected to make as much as $14 million this weekend at the US box office. The film had a reported $40 million budget and is said to be the final entry in the series. We will update this post with The Final Chapter‘s Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and first-weekend box office figures as they become available.

Last week’s No. 1 movie, the M. Night Shyamalan thriller Split, made $40 million for its opening. Variety said it is expected to perform well again, finishing the weekend “in the high teens” in terms of millions of dollars.

The Final Chapter is going up against another new release, A Dog’s Purpose, which is expected to make as much as $22 million this weekend to land at No. 1. That estimate is reduced slightly in the wake of the video that surfaced this month where a dog was seen struggling in the water during filming. The movie’s producers have since said that PETA, which called for a boycott of the film, misrepresented what actually happened. You can read this piece from The Hollywood Reporter to learn more about that situation.

Another notable element of this weekend’s box office is that a number of films are either growing their movie theater footprint or returning to theaters to celebrate their Oscar nominations. For example, the hit musical La La Land, which picked up a record-tying 14 nominations, will play at 3,136 US locations this weekend, compared to 1,850 last weekend. Additionally, the sci-fi movie Arrival, which received eight nominations, is returning to theaters with bonus commentary from the director and stars.

For more on The Final Chapter, check out GameSpot’s review and what other critics are saying. It is the sixth movie in the series, all of which have been directed by Paul W.S. Anderson with Milla Jovovich in the starring role of Alice.

The newest Resident Evil game, Resident Evil 7, launched this week for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC–read GameSpot’s review here.

Xbox Boss Teases E3 Showing — "I Like The Lineup"

With EA already laying out its plans for E3, the annual trade show is on our minds, five months before it kicks off in June. Now, Xbox boss Phil Spencer has teased the Xbox lineup for E3.

Responding to someone on Twitter who asked if he felt good about the upcoming Xbox lineup, Spencer replied from a meeting about E3. “Yes, in another E3 review right now; I like the lineup,” he said.

    No Caption Provided

Before this, Spencer teased that 2017 will not be a FPS Halo- or Gears of War-led year, suggesting that no new games in those franchises are coming this year. Instead, Microsoft will focus on “new experiences with different IP.”

2017 is a big hardware year for Xbox, as the Scorpio comes out this holiday. Microsoft may not show it off until E3, but you can probably expect a big reveal for it at that show. Just this week, Microsoft said development on the system is coming along great.
