  • Arms Review Roundup

With Arms’ launch for Nintendo Switch just around the corner, reviews have started to go live for the colorful fighting game.

You might have already played Arms in one of its Global Testpunch trials. When we played it at preview stage, we found it to be deeper than you might think, but how does the final game hold up?

In GameSpot’s final Arms review, critic Kallie Plagge called the exclusive title a “strong, substantial fighting game that takes a while to really hit its stride.”

“Its barrier to entry is unlike anything else in the genre,” she continued, “but it’s one worth tackling in order to get at the game’s fascinating take on fighting. It may not have the same skill requirement as other fighting games, but the flexibility and fast thinking it requires secures it as one that works on its own terms and opens the genre up to a wider audience.”

    • Game: Arms
    • Developer: Nintendo
    • Platform: Nintendo Switch
    • Release: June 16
    • Price: US $60 / £40 / AU $80

    GameSpot — 7/10

“Arms is a strong, substantial fighting game that takes a while to really hit its stride. Its barrier to entry is unlike anything else in the genre, but it’s one worth tackling in order to get at the game’s fascinating take on fighting. It may not have the same skill requirement as other fighting games, but the flexibility and fast thinking it requires secures it as one that works on its own terms and opens the genre up to a wider audience.” — Kallie Plagge [Full review]

    IGN — 8.0/10

“Arms’ clever take on boxing provides a simple premise with a startling amount of depth for those who would seek to master the stretching appendages. Its rapidly evolving lobby system had me sticking around for ‘just one more match.’ There may not be a lot worth unlocking right now, but planned free updates may just give Arms some additional legs.” — Brendan Graeber [Full review]

    Polygon — 8/10

“Arms exudes a level of creativity and mechanical sophistication that feels uniquely Nintendo. It evokes memories of classic Nintendo games like Punch-Out!!, while also feeling equally fashionable and modern–and set next to Splatoon, suggests the publisher is already charting a path toward the future. With a stylish, memorable cast of characters, inventive gameplay mechanics and smart use of the Switch hardware, Arms already feels like Nintendo’s next great new franchise.” — Michael McWhertor [Full review]

    GamesRadar — 4.5/5

“You could quibble over the odd character mismatch, the occasional cheap tactic, the lacklustre training mode. Otherwise, what’s not to love? While Arms’ offbeat rhythms won’t necessarily suit all palates, this hectic and thrillingly distinctive fusion of brawler and shooter is a taste worth acquiring. It’s conflict, and it’s compromise, and it’s very, very exciting.” — Chris Schilling [Full review]

    VideoGamer — 5/10

“Arms isn’t really a fighting game, but the aim is to pummel your adversary in a best-of-three match-up. It can serve up methodically paced clashes between two competitors, and absolute car crashes when you introduce a third person into the mix. Using the motion controls allows you to finesse your jab, yet swinging your Joy-Con around the front room is more trouble than it’s worth. Arms can dole out a battle of wits one minute, and a frustrating button masher the next. Yeah, Arms is a strange beast.” — Colm Ahern [Full review]

  • Call Of Duty: WW2 Replaces Create-A-Class With New Divisions System

Although we don’t know a lot about Call of Duty: WWII‘s multiplayer yet, Activision today shared a few more details about what we can expect. Specifically, it officially revealed that the game won’t have a create-a-class system in the form that appeared in most recent Call of Duty releases. Rather, the Divisions system will take its place.

In a PlayStation Blog post, Sledgehammer Games head Glen Schofield explained that the Divisions system is a significant overhaul of player customization. Rather than just customizing your weapons loadout and player appearance, you select one of five different “iconic” WWII Divisions that each have different “combat training, division training, and weapons skills.”

“Divisions fundamentally redefines how players invest in their multiplayer soldier career,” Schofield explained.

Although specifics haven’t been shared yet, it sounds like each Division will be better at certain actions than others–maybe with something like a specialized, sniper Division, although that’s speculation at this point.

In addition, Schofield talked more about Call of Duty: WWII’s War Mode. The new multiplayer mode is a narrative-driven, asymmetric battle between opposing players. “Allied and Axis soldiers clash in team-driven assault-and-defend gameplay in the fight for strategic objectives,” he stated. “We partnered with Raven Software for development on War Mode.”

Call of Duty: WWII launches on November 3 for PS4, Xbox One, and PC. You can read more about its multiplayer here and its single-player here. Activision and Sledgehammer will show off more of the game next week at E3 2017; keep an eye on GameSpot for news and impressions.

  • Xbox One Exec Responds To Report About Low Backwards Compatibility Usage

Earlier this week, a report claimed that Xbox One owners “largely ignore” the console’s backwards compatibility functionality. Now, Microsoft has responded.

Xbox chief marketing officer Mike Nichols shared some data points on Twitter today about backwards compatibility usage. He said around half of all Xbox One owners have used backwards compatibility, accruing more than 508 million collective hours playing Xbox 360 games on Xbox One. This is up from 145 million hours in August 2016 and 210 million back in November 2016. The feature launched in November 2015.

A sample of almost 1 million active Xbox One accounts obtained by Ars Technica showed that only 1.5 percent of the more than 1.65 billion minutes of Xbox One usage time was spent using backwards compatibility.

Assuming these figures are correct, it seems clear that backwards compatibility is not as widely used as other features, but playtime is not the only element to consider. Knowing that older games can be played on Xbox One might be a key element in helping someone decide to upgrade to the new console.

In other backwards compatibility news, PlayStation executive Jim Ryan said this week that PlayStation fans shouldn’t expect the feature anytime soon. “I can say it is one of those features that is much requested, but not actually used much,” he said.

There are currently more than 300 games in the Xbox One’s backwards compatibility catalog–you can see all of them here. Microsoft’s new console, Project Scorpio, will also play Xbox 360 games with backwards compatibility.

  • Troubled X-Men Spinoff Gambit Will Happen Eventually, Producer Says

Troubled X-Men Spinoff Gambit Will Happen Eventually, Producer Says

The X-Men franchise continues to grow, with The New Mutants, Deadpool 2, and X-Men: Dark Phoenix all expected in the next couple of years. But there is one X-Men spinoff that hasn’t been quite as lucky, and that is the much-delayed Gambit. Now producer Hutch Parker has confirmed that the studio still plans to make the movie.

    No Caption Provided

In an interview with ScreenRant, Parker was asked about whether Gambit would actually happen, given there were so many other X-Men movies set to hit screens. “It is [still part of our plans],” he said. “I don’t have any news on that but there’s still a desire and a passionate interest to see that movie made.”

This comment follows those made recently by director Doug Liman, who was at one stage attached to the movie. “It’s a crowded field of superhero films so the challenge for Gambit or any of those other movies is finding its unique space and its unique take,” he told IGN.”But, yeah, I think Simon Kinberg, who is producing it, is a great producer and he’ll create something great out of it.”

While both of these comments are positive, they don’t suggest that the movie is going to happen any time soon. Gambit was originally scheduled for release in October 2016, with Rise of the Planet of the Apes‘ Rupert Wyatt as director. He left the film in September 2015, citing citing scheduling conflicts. However, a story in Deadline at the time suggested that there had been ongoing disagreements over both the script and budget.

Liman subsequently joined the movie, with production rescheduled for spring 2016. That also failed to commence, with the start date moved to end of the 2016 to allow time for further rewrites, and then to spring 2017, neither of which happened. Liman quit in August last year, and it is now without a director.

If it happens, Gambit is set to star Channing Tatum as the card-throwing superhero of the title. Like Deadpool, Gambit is a character spun off from the X-Men, first appearing in a 1990 issue of The Uncanny X-Men. He appeared briefly in 2009’s critically panned X-Men Origins: Wolverine, portrayed by Taylor Kitsch.

Massive God Of War Poster Going Up In LA For E3 2017

The massive poster for Star Wars: Battlefront II is not the only one going up in Los Angeles ahead of E3 2017’s official kickoff. Sony is putting up a huge poster for the PlayStation 4-exclusive God of War, suggesting it will have a major presence at the gaming show next week.

Below is a picture of the poster, snapped by Twitter user MonkeyFlop. As you can see, the poster is not quite finished.

New God of War update ?? but wait there’s something missing can you guys figure it out? #E3 #E32017 #GodOfWar #GodOfWarE3 #GodOfWarE32017 pic.twitter.com/CtOywE9bRb

    — MonkeyFlop ? @E3 (@MonkeyFlop) June 6, 2017

That the new God of War would have a major presence during Sony’s E3 showing next week is no big surprise, given the franchise is one of Sony’s biggest and best known.

The new God of War game was announced at E3 2016, but it was a no-show at PlayStation Experience and we haven’t seen much of it at al since the initial reveal. Game director Cory Barlog teased that the wait for new footage will be worth it. “I promise we will be showing something really awesome when it is ready,” he said.

After revealing the game at E3, Barlog talked about how the new God of War was influenced by a canceled Star Wars TV show and will offer a “more diverse emotional palette.” He also spoke about the challenge of making people take Kratos seriously.

The new God of War is set after the events of third game, and it won’t feature an open world–though Barlog did say it was “open.” It also won’t feature the original Kratos voice actor, T.C. Carson. The role has instead been taken over by Stargate SG-1 actor Christopher Judge.

Additionally, the new God of War will not feature any multiplayer. No release date has been announced.

  • Mass Effect: Andromeda Patch 1.08 Out Now, Here's What It Does

Mass Effect: Andromeda Patch 1.08 Out Now, Here's What It Does

The next Mass Effect: Andromeda patch has landed. BioWare today released update 1.08, which expands the romance options for Scott Ryder, adds new options to the character creator, fixes bugs, and more.

Scott Ryder can now romance Jaal. BioWare points out that he’s the first squadmate of the same sex that Scott Ryder can become romantic with. Additionally, the update addresses one of Andromeda’s romance-themed achievements.

    No Caption Provided

“Scott Ryder did not have a same-sex squadmate available as a romance option, nor could the achievement for completing three romances be achieved with only male same-sex partners,” BioWare explained in a blog post.

“And as the Angara have expressed their fluidity in how they perceive gender, it seemed only natural that Scott could have a relationship with Jaal,” the developer added. “The relationships with your crew are some of the most loved and cherished parts of our games, so we wanted to make sure we got it right. We consulted with members of the LGBTQ community, both externally and within our own studios. After carefully considering all feedback, we decided this was an important change to make, and one that made sense for Jaal, Scott, and the Angara.”

BioWare added that it hopes the relationship between Scott Ryder and Jaal “feels as fulfilling and memorable for Scott as it does for Sara.”

Today’s Andromeda update also improves the game’s character creator by adding two new head options, one each for male and female. There is also a new complexion option and more skin tones. Additionally, all hairstyles are now unlocked for both sexes, as is a new bald option.

What’s more, you can now change your appearance mid-game at a station on the Tempest.

Outside of those changes, the next patch fixes a number of bugs, including one where the audio for ammo pick-ups would not play correctly. Another issue addressed with this update is when melee attacks would not work if the revive icon was close to the center of the screen.
