  • New Listing Possibly Reveals Nintendo Theme Park Plans, Could Include Real-Life Mario Kart

Nintendo has filed a new trademark application for something called Super Nintendo World, and from what it sounds like, it could be the name of the Nintendo/Universal theme park.

On May 24, Nintendo filed a trademark application with the United States Patent & Trademark Office (USPTO) for “Super Nintendo World.” The application covers a number of Goods & Services, many of which pertain to “amusement park and amusement park events.”

Among other things, the application covers “amusement park shows and special events at an amusement park,” as well as the “organisation, management, or arrangement of kart racing,” which could be a reference to Nintendo’s plans for a real-life Mario Kart experience.

The trademark application for Super Nintendo World also covers “video game apparatus” such as machines, as well as parts and accessories for them. Also of note is that “amusement machines and apparatus for use in amusement parks other than arcade video game machines” is also singled out in the application.

What’s more, hotel accomodation services, restaurant services, event venue rental, and other items that sound like they could pertain to a theme park are listed.

You can read the full trademark application here on the USPTO’s website.

The Nintendo theme park at Universal will be at the park’s Orlando, Hollywood, and Osaka. Nintendo has yet to announce specific rides or attractions, but you watch the video above to get a high-level idea for what Nintendo and Universal are planning.

  • US Box Office Had Worst Memorial Day Weekend Since 1999

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales was the No. 1 movie at the US box office for the Memorial Day-four day weekend, a time when overall domestic box office receipts were the lowest since 1999. According to Variety, the total US box office haul for all movies in the Friday-Monday long holiday weekend came out to $172.3 million, the lowest in 18 years, dating back to Memorial Day weekend 1999, when the haul was $142.5 million. Notably, that weekend was helped by the release of Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, the first entry in the prequel series.

Some other notable takeaways from this Memorial Day weekend included Dead Men Tell No Tales pushing the entire Pirates franchise past $4 billion. Its US opening ($77 million) was the second-worst in franchise history, only behind the first film ($46.5 million).

The new Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson film Baywatch had a “so-so” opening, bringing in $23 million to finish third, behind Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 ($25.1 million).

Another notable film was Ridley Scott’s Alien: Covenant, which made $13.2 million over the long weekend in the US, dropping substantially from its opening-weekend take of $36.2 million. The movie has now made an estimated $161 million worldwide, so it’s looking good that the movie, reportedly made on a production budget of $97 million, will be in the black.

You can see a full breakdown of the Memorial Day weekend here at EW.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake Undergoes A Big Development Change

“I’ve taken charge on the development side for Final Fantasy VII Remake,” Hamaguchi said during a livestream for Mobius Final Fantasy, for which he is the project lead. “As for the whole story, (it’s a sensitive topic, but) until now, development was moving forward with external cooperation, but the company has decided to shift to an internal setup, including mass production and quality, because we want to control everything, including quality, on a stable schedule. (I won’t be leaving Mobius Final Fantasy.)”

Final Fantasy VII Remake is coming to PlayStation 4, though a release date has not been announced. Keep checking back with GameSpot for the latest.

In other news, some new art for the Final Fantasy VII Remake was released recently as part of the Final Fantasy 30-year anniversary event. The game is not coming soon, as Square Enix has told fans not to expect it until 2018 at the soonest.

  • First Of PlayStation Plus Free Games For June 2017 Leaked, Apparently

First Of PlayStation Plus Free Games For June 2017 Leaked, Apparently

It looks like the first of June 2017’s PlayStation Plus games have been revealed.

The official PlayStation Turkey Twitter channel tweeted a picture of the PlayStation 4 games Killing Floor 2 and Life Is Strange that references PlayStation Plus. The tweet was removed, but not before NeoGAF was able to capture an image of it.

    No Caption Provided

So it looks like Killing Floor and Life Is Strange could be June’s free PS Plus games on PS4. There should also be freebies for PS3 and PS Vita, though these were not referenced in the PlayStation Turkey tweet. Given that it’s the end of the month, we would expect Sony to make an official announcement very soon, surely this week.

Since it’s the end of the month, don’t forget that now is your last chance to grab May’s PS Plus freebies before they return to their normal prices. You can see a rundown of all the titles here.

We will report back with all of June’s PS Plus free games when they are announced.

  • Xbox Scorpio Coming To China This Year

Microsoft’s new console, Project Scorpio, will launch in China later this year.

During a local event recently, Microsoft confirmed that the super-powerful system will be released in the country before the year is out. The system is also coming to the US and other markets this year.

#ProjectScorpio will be available this year for Xbox fans in China. Watch the announcement from our #MicrosoftEvent this week. pic.twitter.com/M44GX6yFhj

    — Microsoft (@Microsoft) May 26, 2017

That Scorpio will launch in China this year is notable because the Xbox One came to China in 2014, some time after the system launched in the US and other regions in 2013. At the time of its release, the Xbox One was the first next-gen console to launch in China.

During the China announcement event this year, Microsoft called Scorpio the “most powerful game console ever,” one that is 40 percent more powerful than any other console available today.

Scorpio–or whatever name Microsoft ends up giving it–will play all Xbox One games. These will “just perform better,” Microsoft said.

Microsoft also confirmed that the Forza Racing Championship event will come to Shanghai’s ChinaJoy event this summer.

With E3 coming up soon, we expect Microsoft will announce many more details about Scorpio soon. Keep checking back with GameSpot for the latest.

  • Overwatch Director On Loot Boxes — “We Are Listening”

Blizzard is aware of the feedback surrounding Overwatch‘s loot boxes, for the Anniversary event and in general, game director Jeff Kaplan said in a forum post recently. He did not mention any particular issues specifically, but he said Blizzard is looking into what can be done to respond to the feedback.

“I just wanted to acknowledge that we’ve been following the threads about the loot box rewards as they pertain to the anniversary events, other events and loot boxes in general,” Kaplan said. “The feedback and suggestions have been helpful to us. We had a really great discussion yesterday about the feedback we’ve been hearing this week. While I don’t have any immediate action items to report, I thought it was important for you to know that we are listening.”

Kaplan said he welcomes the community to continue to talk about loot boxes, as well as other rewards and Overwatch cosmetic items.

Some have been critical of Overwatch’s existence as a premium game that also has microtransactions, in particular the loot box system that gives you random skins and sprays, among other things. Players can purchase loot boxes with real money, though the rewards are still random.

For more on Overwatch, check out GameSpot’s breakdown video above that covers the shooter’s first year. The game’s Anniversary event is going on now, featuring three new Arena maps and new skins, among other things, while a Game of the Year edition is available now.

  • Nintendo Switch Version Of Monster Hunter XX Supports Cross-Play With 3DS

Nintendo Switch Version Of Monster Hunter XX Supports Cross-Play With 3DS

Capcom has revealed some more details on the recently announced Switch version of Monster Hunter XX.

The game is scheduled to arrive in Japan this summer on August 25. The physical release will retail for ¥5,800 ($52), while the digital version will cost slightly less at ¥5,546. ($49.82).

Monster Hunter XX was initially released for 3DS back in March. The upcoming Switch version features the same content, but now supports 1080p resolution when docked and 720p in handheld mode. Like Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate, which released simultaneously for both 3DS and Wii U, players can transfer their save data from the 3DS game to the new Switch version, and vice-versa. Likewise. Monster Hunter Generations players can transfer their saves to the Switch game, though this data cannot be transferred back. The Switch version also supports cross-play with the 3DS title, though it’s strictly limited to online sessions; up to four Switch players can play together either locally or online, however.

Capcom also revealed a special edition Switch bundle, which will launch alongside the game in Japan on August 25. The bundle retails for ¥36,280 ($325.87) and includes a copy of Monster Hunter XX along with a special Monster Hunter-themed Switch dock.

Monster Hunter continues to remain one of the most influential franchises in Japan. After the Switch version of Monster Hunter XX was revealed, Nintendo’s market value experienced another jump, closing at ¥33,510 ($301.27). The company’s share price had already been trending upward thanks in part to demand around its new Switch console, but Monster Hunter’s announcement helped push Nintendo’s market value to its highest point since October 2008.
