  • Daniel Craig Will Be Back For New Bond Movie, But It Might Be His Last Time

Confirming earlier reports, actor Daniel Craig said today he will return to play James Bond for a fifth time in the next 007 movie. He confirmed the news tonight on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert. Here’s an animated GIF of the moment it went down:

    BREAKING NEWS: ???????
Daniel Craig, will you return as James Bond? – @StephenAtHome

    Yes – #DanielCraig #LSSC pic.twitter.com/FroXh2qsp4

    — The Late Show (@colbertlateshow) August 16, 2017

Craig also said that he thinks his fifth Bond movie will be his last. “I think this is it. I just want to go out on a high note,” Craig said, according to Variety. “I can’t wait.”

The actor also cleared up confusion surrounding his comments in 2015 that he would rather slash his wrists than return as Bond. He said that in an interview two days after Spectre finished filming. And given what must have been a demanding shoot, it’s understandable that he wouldn’t want to commit to another movie at that moment. Reflecting back on his choice of words in the Colbert interview, Craig said, “Instead of saying something with style and grace, I said something really stupid.”

Today’s confirmation comes not long after Craig said “nothing has been confirmed” regarding his potential return as Bond. Now it appears it’s a done deal that he’ll be back.

In July, The New York Times reported that Craig would play Bond in at least one more 007 movie. Before that, another report said Craig would be back and that producers were looking to have Skyfall singer Adele sing the theme song for the next entry.

The 25th Bond movie already has a release date of November 8, 2019, but an official title or director remains unknown. A joint statement by production companies Eon and MGM that was released last month read, “additional details regarding distribution, including international release dates, [and] the film’s cast and director will be announced at a later date.”

In October 2015, Craig said if he were to play Bond again, it would “only be for the money.” A year later, a report claimed that Craig was offered $150 million to star in the next two Bond movies. Details about his contract are of course officially unknown.

Craig has played the British super-spy four times already, in the movies Casino Royale, Quantum of Solace, Skyfall, and Spectre. Are you happy that Craig is coming back to play Bond again? Let us know in the comments below!

The Late Show With Stephen Colbert airs on CBS, the TV network owned by GameSpot parent company CBS Corp.

  • Marvel's Jessica Jones Season 2 Will Feature This Surprise Villain

Marvel's Jessica Jones Season 2 Will Feature This Surprise Villain

The Marvel universe is packed with villains, but few as evil as Kilgrave, the mind-controlling bad guy played by former Doctor Who star David Tennant in the first season of Jessica Jones. It has now been revealed that Tennant will return for Season 2 of the Netflix hit. Warning, spoilers below!

    No Caption Provided

As reported by Entertainment Weekly, Tennant has been pictured on set with star Krysten Ritter–check out the image above. What might be surprising to fans is that Kilgrave seemed to die at the end of the first season. Jessica spent much of the show under his control, before finally breaking free and snapping her tormentor’s neck.

Jessica Jones Season 2 has not yet been given a release date, but it is expected to hit Netflix in 2018. However, the character returns to screens on Friday in the first season of The Defenders, which will see her team up with Daredevil, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist. Check out the final trailer for the show, which was released this week.

Last year, Jessica Jones showrunner Melissa Rosenberg spoke about her plans for Season 2 and revealed that her time on the acclaimed serial killer drama Dexter was influencing her approach. “I learned from working on Dexter that you can advance the character, but you never want to cure the character,” she said. “With Dexter, the moment he felt guilt or accepted that he was ‘bad,’ the show’s over. He’s no longer a sociopath.

“The equivalent for us would be if Jessica somehow recovered from the damage that had been done to her. People don’t just heal, you don’t go through that just to say, ‘Oh, he got arrested, he’s in jail, I’m OK now.’ That trauma is a huge part of who she is now. She was kind of messed up even before Kilgrave came along, and so in Season 2 we can explore what’s possible for her moving forward.”

  • Agents Of Mayhem Review Roundup

Volition, the developer of open-world action series Saints Row, has a new game out. It’s not a Saints Row title, though it’s remarkably similar. It’s called Agents of Mayhem, and as pre-release trailers show, it’s got the same blue sense of humor and similar over-the-top open-world combat. It’s even got Saints Row favorite Johnny Gat as a pre-order bonus.

The game takes place in a distant future in which the only hope for governments and global corporations are a group of corporately funded super agents–the Agents of Mayhem. Take a look at a bunch of videos below:

After playing it pre-release, we had our doubts, and now final reviews have started to go live. In our verdict, critic Brett Todd said there’s “little to Agents of Mayhem beyond its foul-mouthed and bombastic attitude.” He went on to say it has “loads of mayhem, but not much else.” Read more in our full Agents of Mayhem review.

For a selection of other critics’ opinions, check out the roundup below. Alternatively you can take a look at GameSpot sister site Metacritic for a wider view of Agents of Mayhem’s critical reception.

    • Game: Agents of Mayhem
    • Developer / Publisher: Volition / Deep Silver
    • Platforms: PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC
    • Release: Out now (US), August 18 (Europe, Australia)
    • Price: US $60 / £43 / AU $100

    GameSpot — 4/10

“Personality can only take a broken and repetitive game so far. The attitude behind Agents of Mayhem has potential, at least if it’s executed properly. But there’s little to Agents of Mayhem beyond its foul-mouthed and bombastic attitude, which push the game into grating and obnoxious territory. Throw in the poor mission design and bugs, and you’ve got a game with loads of mayhem, but not much else.” — Brett Todd [Full review]

    IGN — 7.1/10

“Agents of Mayhem does a good job paying homage to the cartoon and live-action TV heroes of the ’80s and ’90s, and revels in the absurd tropes and idiosyncrasies of those inspirations. A broad and goofy arsenal of unique weapons and gadgets and the ability to switch characters on the fly to access complementary abilities offers some solid combat and good mindless fun, but due to some unpolished writing and repetitive environments and enemy types, it doesn’t fully live up to its heroic potential.” — Jon Ryan [Full review]

    Game Informer — 8.0/10

“Agents of Mayhem is cheesy, rarely funny, and generally ridiculous, but I was eager to play for long periods of time. The action is frenetic and fun, with room for strategy using all the characters’ assorted abilities. Even if Seoul ends up being a bland backdrop, I enjoyed being in the world and causing explosions in [it] at every opportunity.” — Kyle Hilliard [Full review]

    Polygon — 5.5/10

“This has likely started to feel like a litany of sins rather than cogent critique, but it’s the best way I have of illustrating Agent of Mayhem’s failings. It is not felled by any one thing, but is rather undone by a thousand little cuts. Agents of Mayhem heaps theoretical fun on you. Characters, powers, upgrades, tons of missions–it’s desperate to for the player to just have fun. It’s a noble impulse, but one that it’s depressingly incapable of consistently delivering on.” — Justin McElroy [Full review]

    GamesRadar+ — 4/5

“Variety is something that Agents of Mayhem otherwise has in abundance, thankfully. Whether you’re in the mood for action-packed battles on crowded concert stages, upgrading your agents and home base, or going for some breezy, triple-jumping platforming between skyscrapers, new fun is never far off. Then you can return to base, slot in a different trio of heroes, and drop back into Seoul with an all-new team. Mayhem is flawed, but it’s also a strong start for an enjoyable and funny series. Would it be presumptuous to say I’m ready for season two?” — Connor Sheridan [Full review]

    Trusted Reviews — 2.5/5

“Agents of Mayhem would have been a great rental in days gone by, but today it’s an experience that’s great for a a short while, but doesn’t offer enough to keep players invested for the duration of the campaign. I hope Volition does something with these heroes, though, as they’re truly great. I just hope they’re wrapped up in a more fulfilling experience on par with rivals in the genre on their next outing.” — Brett Phipps [Full review]

  • Madden 18 Will Require Update For 4K And HDR – Report

Madden 18 Will Require Update For 4K And HDR – Report

EA Sports has confirmed that Madden NFL 18, which launches next week, will not have 4K or HDR support available without an update. Madden series creative director Rex Dickson told USGamer that PlayStation 4 Pro support, presumably including features like 4K and HDR, will be available through a “future update.”

As USGamer notes (via Game Informer), it’s possible this patch will come out before Madden NFL 18 official release date on August 25. USGamer said it is playing the game now for review. What Dickson’s comment does seem to confirm is that 4K and HDR support will not be available without a patch.

    No Caption Provided

It is possible there would be an update for Madden 18 NFL 18 on Xbox One X when that console arrives in November. wGameSpot has reached out to EA Sports in an attempt to get more details and clarification on the matter.

Madden NFL 18 runs on EA’s Frostbite engine, which also powers the Battlefield series and others. EA is promising a “significant visual leap” for this year’s game, which it says will be the “greatest looking Madden of all time.”

Madden NFL 18 launches on August 25 for PS4 and Xbox One, but EA Access members on Xbox One can start playing the game on August 17. And if you buy the premium G.O.A.T. Edition, you can begin playing on August 22.

New England Patriots QB Tom Brady is on the cover of Madden NFL 18, and the premium version is called G.O.A.T. because he is thought by some to be the Greatest Of All Time. New England fans will hope the Madden Curse does not strike again.

  • Johnny Depp Is Producing This New Video Game TV Show

A TV show based on the video game franchise The Secret World is on the way and actor Johnny Depp’s production company is behind it. This is according to a report today from Hollywood news site Deadline (via Game Informer), which says Depp’s Infinitum Nihil will work with producer Gudrun Giddings on the TV show, which will also be based on Secret World Legends, which is the name of the recently released reboot of the game.

Hook writer James V. Hart and former CSI: NY showrunner Pam Veasey are attached to the Secret World TV show. There is no word on the specific story for the show, but if it’s anything like the show, you can expect there to be agents, supernatural elements, and fights that take place around the world, among other things.

Depp himself will be a producer on The Secret World TV show.

The Secret World is the ideal gaming experience to translate into a live-action episodic adventure,” Veasey told Deadline.

Giddings, the producer from G4C Innovation, optioned the rights to The Secret World for a TV show adaptation back in 2012, according to Deadline. “It’s one of the most character-driven and well developed games I know of and naturally lends itself to fantastical storylines with intriguing characters, a thrilling and binge-worthy international TV show,” he said.

There is no word yet on who might appear in the Secret World TV show, when it would premiere, or where it might air. For more on what is know, go to Deadline to get the full story.

As Deadline reminds us, The Secret World is not the first video game to be announced for a TV show adaptation. In 2015, a report said the classic game Myst would be headed to Hulu, while there were also reports of a Battlefield TV show and a Titanfall show.

In Secret World Legends, the rebooted version of Secret World that launched earlier this year on Steam, players fight against supernatural enemies in a story where “ancient myths and legends cross over into modern day.” Players have weapons and superhuman abilities at their disposal. You can read more about the game on its Steam page and through its official site.

  • Annabelle: Creation Has Worst US Opening In Franchise History

The newest instalment in the Conjuring franchise, Annabelle: Creation, opened in theatres this weekend and while it came in at No. 1 for the weekend, it came up short compared to its predecessors. It made $35 million for the Friday-Sunday period, which is the lowest opening for all four movies, behind Annabelle ($37.1 million), The Conjuring ($41.9 million), and The Conjuring 2 ($40.4 million).

Still, $35 million is a “strong start,” according to Entertainment Weekly, which supplied all the numbers. Another thing to note is that Annabelle: Creation was produced on a $15 million budget.

Rounding out the top five movies at the US box office this weekend were Dunkirk ($11.4 million), The Nut Job 2: Nutty by Nature ($8.9 million), The Dark Tower ($7.9 million), and The Emoji Movie ($6.6 million).

Go to Entertainment Weekly to see a full breakdown of this weekend’s US box office performance.

GameSpot’s review of Annabelle: Creation said it can’t stand up to the past films but has a number of standout moments. “Annabelle: Creation doesn’t quite stand on its own, particularly in its ending,” reviewer Michael Rougeau said. “But thanks to solid performances from its adult and child actors, skillful directing, truly terrifying moments that go beyond cheap jump scares, and a self-awareness that many scary movies lack, it teeters at the peak of this ever-expanding world of connected horror, asking you only to jump with it down into the dark.”

August 11-13 US Box Office Estimates

    1. Annabelle: Creation — $35 million
    2. Dunkirk — $11.4 million
    3. The Nut Job 2: Nutty By Nature — $8.9 million
    4. The Dark Tower — $7.9 million

  • Star Wars: Battlefront “Lacked Long-Term Goals,” Says Developer

One of the year’s most-anticipated games, Star Wars: Battlefront II, is already looking to be a solid improvement over the enjoyable but at-times lacklustre original. In a new video released by PlayStation, DICE producer Craig McLeod spoke candidly about where, how, and why 2015’s Battlefront ran into issues and how the sequel will improve on them.

In essence, the feedback from fans was that 2015’s Battlefront lacked the depth that some were looking for. One piece of common feedback that DICE received from fans was, “We want more breadth,” McLeod said in the view. So with the sequel, DICE and co-developers Motive and Criterion are hoping to give players more ways to spend time with Battlefront and enjoy it.

“A lot of people found that with the original Battlefront, after a few months of play, they lacked the long-term goals,” he explained. “So these are the things that we are really trying to make sure we nail in this new game.”

Whereas the first Battlefront only had characters and content from the original Star Wars movies (and later Rogue One), the sequel will have those, along with prequel and new-era. Key art for Battlefront II shows characters like Yoda, Rey, and Darth Maul. Not only that, but Battlefront II has a more in-depth progression system to encourage players to spend more time in the game and give them a reason to keep playing.

Another huge piece of Battlefront II is its single-player campaign. The first game didn’t have one, but for the sequel, EA’s Motive Studios is making a campaign that follows a new character named Iden Versio, a member of the Empire.

Overall, McLeod said the level of ambition that Battlefront II has is something he never thought would be possible in gaming.

“The ambition here that we’ve managed to achieve is something I never thought would be able to be realised when I worked in games,” he said. “I am just incredibly proud of that.”

Battlefront II has big shoes to fill, as the original shipped 14 million copies to become one of the best-selling Star Wars games in history.

The sequel launches in November, though you can play it ahead of that when the open beta begins in October on all platforms. At Gamescom this month, EA will show off more of Battlefront II’s Starfighter Assault mode.

  • Bad Boys 3 Loses Release Date, But Will Smith Is Still “Interested”

Bad Boys 3 Loses Release Date, But Will Smith Is Still “Interested”

A third Bad Boys movie, titled Bad Boys For Life, has been in the works at Sony for some time, but it doesn’t seem to be getting any closer to the screen. In March, it lost director Joe Carnahan, and has now been removed entirely from the studio’s release slate.

As reported by Deadline, the movie was originally set for a November 2018 release. However, even though it no longer appear’s on Sony’s schedule, the site notes that the movie has not been cancelled and that “the script is still being worked on”. In addition, star Will Smith is still “interested” in the project.

    No Caption Provided

Both Bad Boys For Life and Bad Boys 4 were announced in August 2015. At the time the former was given a February 2017 release, which subsequently moved back to early 2018, and then to the November date. Bad Boys 4 was dropped from the schedule in February.

The A-Team director Joe Carnahan was originally hired to direct, but he withdrew in March, citing “scheduling issues.” At the time it was reported that Sony was actively looking for a new director, with three names under consideration.

It was Smith himself who first revealed that a third movie was in the works. Last year he spoke about meeting co-star Martin Lawrence for the first time in several years. “We just looked at each other,” he said. “We hugged. In that moment, we knew we were making another Bad Boys. We’re definitely doing another one.”

The first Bad Boys was released in 1995, with the sequel following in 2003. Both movies were directed by Transformers‘ Michael Bay.

  • PlayStation Paris Games Week Press Conference Date And Time Revealed

PlayStation Paris Games Week Press Conference Date And Time Revealed

Sony is skipping Europe’s biggest gaming event, Gamescom, this year, but it’s still going to be showing off more of its games in the region. In lieu of the Cologne, Germany, convention, Sony is heading to France as part of Paris Games Week, and its big PlayStation conference will take place on October 30 at 8 AM PT / 11 AM ET / 4 PM BST. That’s 1 AM AEST on October 31 if you’re in Australia.

The below image detailing the times popped up via NeoGaf user Chadskin, and Sony has confirmed to GameSpot that it’s accurate. The company says it will reveal more details about this year’s event soon.

    No Caption Provided

It’s unclear at this stage what Sony will show off at its Media Showcase, but the event will likely include trailers and gameplay from the publisher’s upcoming games, similar to its traditional E3 show. At the event two years ago, Sony revealed Uncharted 4’s multiplayer mode, showed off more footage of Horizon Zero Dawn, confirmed Street Fighter V’s release date and unveiled Quantic Dream’s latest game, Detroit: Become Human.

The timing of the conference puts it just a few weeks before Sony’s PlayStation Experience celebration in California, USA, where the platform holder typically holds another conference full of trailers and more announcements. That event runs from December 9 to December 10.

Although Sony has elected not to hold a conference at Gamescom, Microsoft has confirmed it will attend the show with a conference and playable Xbox One X consoles. Stay tuned to GameSpot for all the news, trailers, impressions, and more when we attend the show next week.
