  • Zelda: Breath Of The Wild's New Hard Mode Uses Separate Save Slots

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild‘s Master Mode will utilise a separate set of save data slots, according to Nintendo’s official website for the game. The site indicates that Master Mode save slots will be distinct from the other difficulties, but notes that “you can only make use of two save data slots compared to six save data slots available in Normal Mode.”

Master Mode is being released as part of the game’s Master Trials DLC. Along with the new hard mode, the DLC will include Trial of the Sword and the Heroes Path Mode. The former is a survival-like gameplay mode where players start without any armour or weapons but must defeat the enemies in each room to progress. The reward is to “awaken the power of the Master Sword, and it will always be in its glowing powered-up state while usable.”

The latter, meanwhile, tracks every step you make across Hyrule, allowing players to get a better understanding of where they have explored and haven’t.

Other additions coming as part of the Master Trials include the Travel Medallion, which lets you create a single temporary gate to “travel gate anywhere that you can stand on the map.” New Armour inspired by Majora’s Mask, Midna’s Helmet, Phantom Armor, and Tingle’s outfit will also be included.

Finally, and perhaps most excitingly, is the Korok Mask, which will help players find the 900 Koroks hiding around Hyrule. When close to a Korok, the mask will shake to let you know it’s nearby.

The Master Trials comes out June 30 and is the first of two DLCs announced (the other will be called The Champion’s Ballad, but doesn’t have a release date yet). For all the details on the upcoming expansion, check out the links below:

  • Detroit: Become Human Will Release In 2018

Detroit: Become Human–the upcoming neo-noir game from Heavy Rain and Beyond: Two Souls developer Quantic Dream–will launch in 2018, director David Cage has confirmed.

Until now, no release window had ever been mentioned for the PS4 exclusive, and its E3 2017 story trailer also did not confirm a date, as some thought it might. However, Cage told GameSpot at E3 that “it’s going to be next year.”

Some people had believed the game would launch this year, after a PlayStation sizzle reel had listed it as part of the platform’s 2017 releases. However, Sony’s president of Worldwide Studios, Shuhei Yoshida, later stated the listing was a mistake.

Elsewhere in our interview, Cage discusses a bunch of different topics, from how he wants the player to be Detroit’s co-writer, co-director, and co-star to how real-world issues, including terrorism, affected the game’s story. Keep an eye out for the full piece on GameSpot later today. For our impressions of Become Human, check out our video roundup of the best PS4 games at Sony’s booth.

Detroit was shown on-stage at Sony’s E3 2017 press conference, during which the company announced a Shadow of the Colossus remake, a PSVR version of Skyrim, and a new Monster Hunter game. For more, check out all the Sony press conference news or all the Sony press conference trailers.

  • Deadpool 2 Star Ryan Reynolds Reveals Familiar Location In First On-Set Image

The huge success of the X-men spinoff Deadpool was one of 2016’s biggest box office surprises, and the sequel is due next year. Production has started on Deadpool 2, and star Ryan Reynolds marked the occasion by tweeting an image from the set, with a suitably vulgar caption. It shows the Merc with a Mouth posing in front of the X-Mansion–check it out below:

Dropped by the X-Mansion. Big fucking surprise. No one’s home. pic.twitter.com/svbUMEdKbb

    — Ryan Reynolds (@VancityReynolds) June 17, 2017

Deadpool 2 is set for release on June 1, 2018. The movie will also star Josh Brolin as Cable and Zazie Beetz as Domino.

Last month, Brolin revealed the gruelling training regime he is underaking to get into shape for the role. There was also this early teaser for the movie, which was released with the Wolverine hit Logan in March.

In related news, an adult animated Deadpool show is on the way. The currently untitled series will be overseen by Atlanta star and creator Donald Glover with his brother Stephen. The pair will both act as showrunners, producers, and writers. It is being developed for FXX, the sister channel to FX, and the 10-part first season will premiere next year.

  • E3 2017: Sea of Thieves Changed The Way Rare Develops Their Games

Announced back in 2015, Rare’s online shared pirate adventure game Sea of Thieves made another apperance during this week’s Microsoft conference, giving a more detailed view of what players can expect with the game. Set on the high seas, players will embark with a crew of other players online and get into all sorts of mischief as they loot, pillage, and battle other pirates in order to stay on top in high stakes game of piracy.

As a bit of a departure from their past games, this is Rare’s largest title in years, and looks to be a bit of a return to form after working many years on kinect and other micro-titles. Currently in closed alpha, Rare has been steadily cranking out updates and new features for the few players in closed alpha, which has helped the game evolve further. Speaking with studio head Craig Duncan, he spoke about how working on Sea of Thieves has been a bit of a refresher for the studio, and how it allowed them to come out of their shell and reconnect with the fans that have stuck with them for the decades they’ve been in business.

GameSpot: In the last generation, it seemed like Rare refocused their efforts to work more on titles directed more at Kinect and other titles. With this one being a rather ambitious take on the shared online world concept, and easily the biggest game you’ve made in a long time, do you view this game as a sort of statement in your shift in vision to work on more larger and ambitious games?

Craig Duncan: Back in 2015, we announced the Rare Replay at the E3 presentation, and we said ‘hey, Rare is celebrating its thirty year anniversary as a studio, here’s all this awesome stuff we did over the years’–and then we announced this new IP with Sea of Thieves. Looking back on our history, we’ve done several new IPs over the years–but to me, the big change here is that Rare was notoriously a very secretive studio, a very closed studio. And as you can see how we’re bringing Sea of Thieves to market, we are so open and transparent in how we work with our community.

The people that have signed up for our Sea of Thieves insider program have become really invested in the game and they’re very interested in how we’re approaching new features on our developer road map. We actually talk with them about the order in which they want certain features to release, we’re actively polling them on new mechanics, checking the forums, and listening to everything they say. […] The real link between Rare’s internal community and the Sea of Thieves community has never been stronger. And that’s a real pivot for Rare, and the way we work. It’s been super liberating, players are the most important people, and just allowing them to be actively involved in the way they want. It’s an ambitious game, and they understand our vision.

GS: The big trend we’re seeing now is this focus on titles that have a large, shared online world to explore with other players. Can you talk about what it’s like developing a title like this, and how your past titles may have had an influence on this game?

Sure. Even before it was pirates, the bit we were all really excited about was just allowing players to create stories for themselves. And that was our vision for when we were initially going around coming up with our IPs. We wanted to create a game that let people make their own stories. Players socialize about games in many different ways. Either on twitter, Facebook, instagram about what they did or what happened to them in their games. […] It’s just people making videos, talking about what they did and sharing that with others. The thing we really wanted to make was something that absolutely played into that, where they get to create unique stories and share them with other players.

If you think of that as the high goal, so we wanted to do that and work with our community in more open and transparent ways–which was one of our chief pillars–and then it was really about what theme of game or what ‘wrapper’ of game would allow us to have our players have these shared stories. And that’s how the pirate setting came in, which was this rather genius and clever way of presenting those aspects. When you give players a ship, a map, and a treasure to find, then generally they know what to do. We can really take what’s familiar for people, and present it in a new way.

GS: Considering this game is a very much an open ended experience with a lot of different systems happening at once, have you seen any moments where things occur and you end up being surprised by what players can do in the game?

It’s interesting, really. We know what the world is, what’s there and the kinda loops and structures that are there. We have something called ‘guided emergence’, which is what sets up the goals and things to do for players, but it’s actually more meta than that. Because when the players go and play, it’s really them doing all the things that different and unique. It’s really their story. We have one fan named Jeff, a long time fan and even visited the studio once, and he told us a story about how he boarded a ship and started playing his musical instrument. The other crew members just looked at him and then they started playing music together. It sounds like a silly thing, but really it allowed them to form a band and go on an adventure together.

When I think of what surprises, I don’t think of all the moments where people attacks other ships, I think of players joining up together, forming a crew, and organically go out and collectively solve riddles, and other challenges. I think when you give players a world to explore, then they’ll do things that are really inspiring. I can’t wait to take the NDA off and allow people to post videos and stream the game, that’s when I feel the game will really open. I guarantee we’ll have people in full pirate dress up during a stream. I really like seeing people embrace the setting the crew they find themselves with. And that’s what makes our game so enjoyable and watchable.

  • E3 2017: Our Favorite Sports And Racing Games

There are a lot of games at E3–too many to easily keep track of. If you’re a fan of sports and racing games in particular, the task is thankfully a bit easier, as the sheer number of games isn’t that high. That isn’t a reflection on the games that are at the event, though–there are some games that are shaping up to be quite good. Below, we’ve rounded up our favorite sports and racing games from the show.

    Need for Speed Payback

Comparisons between Need for Speed Payback and Fast and Furious are not in short supply this week, and with good reason. Rather than functioning as a more traditional racing game, Payback places an emphasis on story and action. You’re not just racing to a finish line; you’re chasing after a truck, taking out its escort vehicles, and then attempting to escape from the police after hijacking a high-end car. The ability to switch between multiple characters could offer an experience similar to that of Grand Theft Auto V, where you’re able to play out a single scenario from multiple vantage points.

    The Crew 2

The Crew 2 expands on the previous game in an exciting way, introducing the ability to drive around in more than just cars. Boats and planes join the mix, which is exciting on its own, but what makes their addition especially interesting is the way you seamlessly move from one vehicle type to the next. Without entering a garage or loading screen, you can instantaneously shift from driving along the road on a motorcycle to taking off in a plane. It gives the game a distinct feeling which, along with its return of open-world racing, helps to distinguish it from some of the other racing games at E3.

    Echo Arena

If I had to describe what sort of sport Echo Arena is, I’d say it’s zero-gravity ultimate frisbee crossed with rugby with a bit of Quidditch thrown in. Playing in VR in a four-on-four match, you must grab a disk from the middle of the arena and make it to the other side to score in the other team’s goal. Opposing players can punch the disk-carrier in the face to stun them and get them to drop it, and passing the disk between teammates is essential to achieving victory. You can even set up team strategies like running a wedge of blockers in front of a disk-carrier, incapacitating opponents. It’s awesome, a surprising amount of fun, and is the closest thing to a physical sport I’ve ever played in a video game.

    Gran Turismo Sport

The long-awaited next entry in the Gran Turismo series, GT Sport, is nearly here, and it’s looking quite good. Its cars and tracks are stunning, and its PlayStation VR support and new esports modes are exciting additions. Porsches also make an appearance for the first time in series history, helping to round out what feels like a tightly curated roster of vehicles.

    Forza Motorsport 7

Forza 7 doubles down on what makes the series so appealing to diehard racing fans. This is a fantastic-looking game, particularly on a 4K HDR TV when the rain rolls in. Forza 7 expands its weather system so that you might see rain clouds in the distance which will then move in and impact the race. Developer Turn 10 has gone to great lengths to ensure realism, even accurately modeling the spots on these real-world tracks where puddles tend to accumulate when it rains. Add in new wrinkles like a customization system for your character and a huge roster of cars, and Forza 7 looks to be delivering exactly what you’d want from a new Motorsport title.

    Project Cars 2

Of all the simulation-style racing games, Project Cars 2 may go the furtherest in terms of trying to simulate the real-life race car experience. It looks fantastic and offers VR support for those with a headset, but even for those who don’t, the addition of rallycross racing and its 24-hour day/night cycle looks to be offering a more complete experience than the first game.

    F1 2017

Iterating on the F1 formula, F1 2017 introduces several additions that make you feel as if you’re in the shoes of a true career racer. There will be many RPG-like elements, such research and development decisions for new car parts, and team management including sponsor relationships. Codemasters is also giving fans of the sport new classic cars to take for a spin and some new modes to keep things fresh. And if you’re not familiar with F1, take note that these cars move fast. While F1 2017 taps into racing simulation territory, it doesn’t feel inaccessible since these speedy race cars handle well and grip to the track.

    Madden NFL 18

Following in the footsteps of FIFA, Madden 18 introduces a story mode. But rather than telling the more obvious story of an up-and-comer looking to make it in the NFL, Madden takes a different approach. It focuses on someone who has repeatedly tried and failed to make it into the league and who is now making a last-ditch effort to get signed. It remains to be seen how well it will turn out, but it’s a novel concept that should help to make the mode worth a look.

    FIFA 18

FIFA 18 builds on the previous game’s story mode, The Journey, which was a big hit. It continues the story of Alex Hunter, and while the specifics are a bit dubious–moving from the Premier League to Major League Soccer feels like a step down–it does have the makings of something interesting. Combine that with the gorgeous visuals and enhanced presentation, and FIFA 18 has the makings of a strong entry in the series.
