  • Uncharted: Lost Legacy Review Roundup

Uncharted: The Lost Legacy was once a mere expansion for last year’s Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, but developer Naughty Dog says it’s now a fully-fledged Uncharted title in its own right. It stars returning characters Chloe Frazer and Nadine Ross, and Nathan Drake doesn’t feature at all.

We know The Lost Legacy contains the biggest Uncharted level ever made, and we’ve seen some pre-release gameplay–but is it any good? Reviews have started to go live for the new action game, and it seems critics are enjoying it. Our reviewer, Miguel Concepcion, said “The Lost Legacy doesn’t signify a new era for Uncharted” but it does deliver “new settings and character motivations, wrapped in a comfortingly familiar Uncharted package.” He went on to say it ranks “among the best in the series.” For more, check out our full Uncharted: Lost Legacy review.

    • Game: Uncharted: The Lost Legacy
    • Developer / Publisher: Naughty Dog / Sony
    • Platform: PlayStation 4
    • Release: August 22 (North America), August 23 (Europe, Australia)
    • Price: US $40 / £25 / AU $55

    GameSpot — 9/10

“The Lost Legacy doesn’t signify a new era for Uncharted so much as it presents an opportunity to show the series from new perspectives, for which Chloe and the AI-controlled Nadine are perfectly capable. With a new playable treasure hunter comes new settings and character motivations, wrapped in a comfortingly familiar Uncharted package. The thrill of playing through set pieces that call back scenes from the earlier games is all the more enhanced when seen through the gameplay mechanics introduced in A Thief’s End. The initial hours of The Lost Legacy give an “Uncharted Greatest Hits” vibe, but it grows into a more nuanced, clever experience, ranking among the best in the series while also making its own mark as a standalone Uncharted that isn’t anchored to Nathan Drake’s harrowing exploits.” — Miguel Concepcion [Full review]

    IGN — 7.5/10

“Uncharted: The Lost Legacy succeeds on the strength of its protagonists, writing, and phenomenal depiction of India’s jungles and ruins. Being in the company of Chloe and Nadine keeps its overly familiar action sequences and disappointingly empty open-world area interesting, and it regains its footing in smart puzzles and thrilling cinematic moments.” — Marty Sliva [Full review]

    Polygon — 8.5/10

“I went into Uncharted: The Lost Legacy expecting a light stand-alone adventure, but it turns out to serve a much greater purpose. Despite the new protagonist, this game serves as a celebration of everything the Uncharted series has come to represent over a decade of mostly strong releases from Naughty Dog. And because of the new protagonist, it also offers a glimpse into what the franchise could become in the future, with some new developer leading the way. Naughty Dog did right by our memories here, and I hope that whoever takes on Uncharted next does right by them.” — Philip Kollar [Full review]

    Eurogamer — Recommended

“Perhaps it is unfair to expect more of a glorified expansion pack, but it was Naughty Dog that raised our expectations were with the excellent Left Behind add-on for The Last of Us; it seems as though, with its changing of the guard, The Lost Legacy had just as good an opportunity to weave some new patterns with this old yarn. That opportunity has been missed.

“Many won’t mind that and will point, reasonably, to the sheer unflagging quality and effortlessness of this action romp. Others, like me, will take pleasure in finding that a smaller Uncharted doesn’t mean a lesser one, and that even in a series known for its excess, less can be more. And Nate? To be honest, I didn’t really miss him.” — Oli Welsh [Full review]

    Trusted Reviews — 5/5

“It might be shorter–as reflected in the price–but The Lost Legacy is a great Uncharted and a dazzling example of a studio at the top of its game. To be honest, I wouldn’t have believed that Chloe and Nadine could make such fantastic, sympathetic protagonists or that Naughty Dog could stretch the formula out for another 10 hours, yet it has and I loved every minute.

“To my mind, this isn’t merely one of the best games of the summer, but one of the season’s best blockbusters in any media. If Naughty Dog wants to leave the series here, it’s hard to grumble, but let’s hope it doesn’t. Right now, more Uncharted seems like anything but a bad idea.” — Stuart Andrews [Full review]

    The Guardian — 4/5

“Though The Lost Legacy boasts beautiful new environments to explore and for Chloe to take collectible photos of on her smartphone, the journey through them feels very familiar. The only thing that’s truly fresh about this game is the protagonists, but they’re a promising pair, and those who don’t mind a formulaic sequel should take the chance to get to know them. They’ve certainly proved that we don’t need Drake.” — Jordan Erica Webber [Full review]

  • James Bond's Daniel Craig Clears Up That “Slash My Wrists” Quote

Back in 2015, after shooting finished on the Bond movie Spectre, 007 actor Daniel Craig said he would rather “slash my wrists” than play James Bond again. That quote has been making the rounds for the past two years, and, now that Craig is confirmed be playing Bond again, he has cleared up some confusion about the quote and what he really meant.

Appearing on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert, Craig clarified that he gave that quote in an interview that took place just two days after Spectre finished filming. It must have been a demanding process to shoot such a massive movie, so it’s understandable he wouldn’t want to dive right back in in that moment.

“There is no point in making excuses about it, but it was two days after I finished shooting the last movie,” Craig recalled. “I went straight into an interview and someone said, ‘Would you do another one?’ And I went, ‘No.’ And instead of saying something with style and grace, I gave a really stupid answer.”

Colbert then jumped in to say the situation is like asking a woman who just gave birth if she would like to have another child. He suggested that the woman might say no at that moment but would be open to the idea of having another child later. Craig said he doesn’t exactly agree with the comparison. “I can’t compare it to childbirth. I would get in a lot of trouble,” he said.

Craig will play James Bond for a fifth time in the 25th Bond movie, which is due out in November 2019. It could be his last time playing the British super-spy after four movies so far: Casino Royale, Quantum of Solace, Skyfall, and Spectre.

The Late Show With Stephen Colbert airs on CBS, the TV network owned by GameSpot parent company CBS Corp.

  • Highest-Paid Actresses For 2017 Revealed; Emma Stone Tops The List

Business and money magazine Forbes has published its annual list of the world’s highest-paid actresses, and Jennifer Lawrence–after two years on top–is no longer No. 1. Emma Stone, who won an Oscar for La La Land, was the highest-paid actress of 2017 according to the report. She reportedly banked $26 million before taxes during the year.

According to Forbes, the “bulk” of Stone’s rich payday in 2017 came from the box office success of La La Land, which made more than $445 million at the global box office.

Jennifer Aniston ranked second on the 2017 list, with pre-tax earnings of $25.5 million. According to Forbes, the majority of Aniston’s money came from her endorsement deals with companies like Emirates Airlines, Smartwater, and Aveeno.

Lawrence, who was the highest-paid actress for the two years prior, came in at No. 3 this year, banking $24 million. She made her money from the upcoming Darren Aronofsky movie Mother! and the film Red Sparrow, according to Forbes. She also has an endorsement deal with Dior.

Rounding out the top five this year were Melissa McCarthy ($18 million) and Mila Kunis ($15.5 million).

Forbes said its list covers the June 1, 2016 through June 1, 2017 period, and doesn’t include taxes and manager and lawyer fees. The numbers are “estimates … based on data from Nielsen, ComScore, Box Office Mojo, and IMDB, as well as interviews with industry insiders.”

  • EA Wants Madden 18's Story Mode To Be A Playable Movie

One of the big new additions for Madden NFL 18 is the Longshot mode. A “cinematic and playable” story mode, Longshot follows a former standout high school QB, Devin Wade, who steps away from the game after the pressures of life lead him away from the game. The mode is all about redemption and Wade’s effort to get to the NFL.

Now, EA Sports has released a behind-the-scenes trailer in which developers at the studio and actors in the game, including Oscar winner Mahershala Ali and NFL legend Dan Marino, talk about the movie and how it aims to be basically a playable movie. It’s a fun look inside of one of Madden NFL 18’s most exciting new additions. Take a look:

Madden NFL 18’s Longshot mode also stars Friday Night Lights actor Scott Porter. You can learn more about the mode here on the Madden website.

If you have EA Access on Xbox One, you can start playing Madden NFL 18 right now through its 10-hour Play First trial. It includes the first chapter of Longshot. The game’s G.O.A.T. Edition unlocks on August 22, while the official release date is set for August 25.

Keep checking back with GameSpot for more on Madden NFL 18 in the days and weeks ahead.

  • Madden 18 Is Playable Right Now, Here's How

Madden NFL 18‘s EA Access Play First trial has gone live. If you have an Xbox One and subscribe to EA Access, you can play 10 hours of the game right now, more than a week ahead of the game’s official release date on August 25.

According to PastaPadre, the trial lets you play the full game, though the Longshot store mode starring Oscar-winner Mahershala Ali cuts off after the first section.

As with previous Play First trials, the 10-hour timer is rolling when the game is running, so be sure to close it when you’re not playing. To be safe, it’s probably a good idea to completely close the game when you’re not using it.

All of your progress is saved, so if you end up buying the full game when it comes out, you won’t have to start over.

Now that Madden NFL 18’s EA Access trial is up on Xbox One, we have also learned the game’s file size. On Xbox One, it appears to be 36.49 GB.

EA Access is only available on Xbox One. Another benefit is that subscribers save 10 percent on all EA digital content, knocking down the price from $60 to $54 for the base edition. The subscription service costs $5/month or $30/year.

The Madden NFL 18 G.O.A.T. Edition unlocks on August 22 on Xbox One and PlayStation 4, while the standard edition becomes available on August 25. Keep checking back with GameSpot for more on the pro football game.

  • Diablo 3 Update Out Now For Some, Here's What It Does

Diablo III has received a big update for its public test realm on PC, bringing with it a bunch of balance changes. A number of abilities have been strengthened in the 2.6.1 patch, buffing their corresponding classes.

The Barbarian’s Bloodshed effect has been “redesigned,” for example, and it now deals damage “equal to 20% of your recent Critical Hits to enemies within 20 yards every second.” The Crusader’s limitless effect has also been overhauled, and will from now on increase the damage of Blessed Hammer to 640% and increase its area of effect by 20 yards.

The Necromancer has received a number of changes, though bear in mind that to test them, you will need to have purchased the class in the live game, as the ability to purchase it in the PTR has been disabled. Take a look at all the class’s changed below. Elsewhere, developer Blizzard says many Legendary and Set items have had their drop chance increased, while many more have seen their damage effect go up.

Take a look at the full patch notes, via Blizzard, at the bottom of this article. Blizzard states that “this isn’t the final version of the patch notes and that some changes may not be documented or described in full detail.”

The last patch, 2.6.0, brought with it the Rise of the Necromancer pack, which added the new Necromancer class. It also introduced Challenge Rifts (weekly static dungeons that have you playing as a set character), new zones (The Moors and The Temple of the Firstborn, both found in Act 2 in Adventure mode), and new Realms of Fate bounties (which are located at new waypoints on the map).

In our verdict, we thought Rise of the Necromancer was “a fantastic character pack that adds one of the best, most enjoyable classes to the existing game roster.” Read more in our full Diablo III: Rise of the Necromancer review.

Diablo III Update 2.6.1 PTR Patch Notes

    Classes

    • Barbarian Skills
      • Battle Rage
        • Bloodshed
          • Has been redesigned:
          • Deal damage equal to 20% of your recent Critical Hits to enemies within 20 yards every 1 second.
          • Note: Bloodshed caused performance issues when encountering high enemy density, particularly when combined with Whirlwind, Pain Enhancer, and Gem of Efficacious Toxin.
    • Crusader Skills
      • Blessed Hammer
        • Limitless
          • Has been redesigned:
          • Increase the damage of Blessed Hammer to 640% weapon damage as Holy and increase its area of effect by 20 yards.
          • Note: The extra projectiles created by this rune were causing performance issues in cases with high enemy density.
    • Necromancer Skills
      • Command Skeletons
        • Commanding your Skeletal Warriors will break crowd control effects on them
        • Skeletal Warriors will no longer die after taking too many hits
        • Design Philosophy: When we were first designing Command Skeletons, we wanted to capture the feeling of being an undead commander by having skeletons regularly spawn around the Necromancer and charge into battle during combat. It created a cool visual, but as the class evolved through Set bonuses and Legendary powers, it became clear that this visual began to hinder gameplay for some builds. Skeletal Warriors now have the same defenses as all other pets in the game.
      • Devour
        • Voracious
          • Resource cost reduction stacks granted from this rune will now stack and are no longer overridden from multiple casts.
      • Simulacrum
        • Added a glow to the skill icon to indicate when Simulacrum is active.
      • Skeletal Mage
        • This skill will now display the duration of the oldest mage raised as a buff in addition to the total number of mages active
        • Design Philosophy: This change is largely to provide transparency to players on the duration of their mage armor. This will be especially useful to players using the Bones of Rathma set. It’s our goal that players will no longer feel compelled to refresh their Skeletal Mage counter when they’re already at max.
      • Bone Armor
        • Essence cost removed.
        • Can now be cast while moving.
      • Army of the Dead
        • Frozen Army
          • The pulsing damage from this rune has been spread out
          • Design Philosophy: This was done to ensure enemies within range are evenly hit and to better align with the visual. This will result in more targets being hit more consistently for the stated weapon damage amount.
    • Necromancer Passives
      • Fueled By Death
        • The movement speed bonus from this passive can now exceed the 25% cap
    • Witch Doctor Skills
      • Soul Harvest
        • Adding a stack or refreshing Soul Harvest now refreshes all stacks of Soul Harvest.
    • Bug Fixes
      • Fixed an issue which prevented Army of the Dead from sometimes triggering when the player is immediately afflicted by a monster’s crowd control after casting it
      • Fixed an issue where enemy monsters could heal themselves when striking another monster afflicted by Leech
      • Fixed a bug which caused Skeletal Mages to sometimes spawn up in the air
      • Fixed an issue where the firewall left behind by Arcane Orb – Scorch was not dealing damage
      • Fixed an issue which caused Skeletal Mages to lose their target when players used Command Skeletons to attack the same target
      • Fixed an issue which caused connection issues when players used a channeling skill while attempting to force move at the same time

    Items

    • General
      • Many Legendary and Set items have had their drop chance increased

    Legendary Items

  • It Movie’s VR Experience Will Make You Float With Terror

Virtual Reality is a natural fit for horror, so it’s no surprise that the producers of the upcoming Stephen King adaptation It are using it for the movie’s promotion. Warner has released It: Float–A Cinematic VR Experience, which takes the viewer deep into the darkened sewers of the fictional town of Derry, with the voice of demonic clown Pennywise as your guide. Experience it below–if you dare:

It arrives in theaters on September 8. A first trailer was released in April, and this creepy clip followed in May. The movie stars Bill Skarsgard as Pennywise, plus Finn Wolfhard, Jaeden Lieberher, Sophie Lillis, Wyatt Oleff, and Jeremy Ray Taylor.

Even though the film doesn’t hit cinemas until next month, plans for the sequel are already underway. Last month, director Andres Muschietti confirmed that he would start work on the second part of the adaptation soon. “We’ll probably have a script for the second part in January,” he said. “Ideally, we would start prep in March. Part one is only about the kids. Part two is about these characters 30 years later as adults, with flashbacks to 1989 when they were kids.”

Muschietti also recently explained how the new film would differ from the 1990 TV adaptation that starred Tim Curry as Pennywise. “People who read the book and got the book, they’re not crazy about the miniseries,” he said. “It was a very watered-down version. It didn’t contain the darkness that the book had. They couldn’t make something for TV about a clown who eats children.”

“I wanted to stay true to the essence of [Pennywise],” he continued. “I knew that I didn’t want to go the road of Tim Curry. Bill Skarsgard caught my attention. The character has a childish and sweet demeanor, but there’s something very off about him. Bill has that balance in him. He can be sweet and cute, but he can be pretty disturbing.”

In related news, it was reported last month that Muschietti has also signed on to develop a live-action version of the classic ’80s animated series Robotech.

  • Nintendo Switch's Arms Getting New Fighter Soon, Take A Look Here

Arms for Nintendo Switch has been out for a couple of months now, and Nintendo continues to support it with new updates and content. Right now, the company is teasing an upcoming fighter with an as yet unannounced name, as well as a new map. Take a look at the fighter below.

ですよね…! pic.twitter.com/2yohkLWGww

    — ARMS(アームズ) (@ARMS_Cobutter) August 16, 2017

They appear to have nunchuck-type Arms, but little else is currently known about the character. The tease follows a separate Tweet from two days ago which showed Arms’ announcer, Biff, in what looks to be an upcoming DLC arena with a candy theme.

特別ボーナスでちゃうかも! pic.twitter.com/qNWtj18YoQ

    — ARMS(アームズ) (@ARMS_Cobutter) August 14, 2017

The character and stage will not be the first free DLC Arms has received since launch. Just last month, a fighter called Max Brass–who was previously a boss character in the game’s Grand Prix mode–was added as a playable warrior. More recently, the game was updated to tweak a bunch of characters and add new training exercises.

Arms launched in June to a positive critical reception. It’s proved popular commercially, too: Nintendo revealed recently that the game had sold over 1 million copies by the end of June, while the Switch itself had shifted nearly 5 million units. In our Arms verdict, critic Kallie Plagge called the title a “strong, substantial fighting game,” but one that “takes a while to really hit its stride.” Read more in our full Arms review.

In other Nintendo Switch news, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild has been updated, adding a new Zelda-specific news channel on Switch called Tips from the Wild. The channel, which is live now, allows players to obtain in-game items, though it’s currently unclear what those items might be.

  • New ReCore News Teased, Might Be Definitive Edition

An announcement about the adventure game ReCore is coming up soon, it seems. The developer said on Twitter today that fans should stay tuned on August 20 to find out “what’s next” for the game.

That timing lines up with Microsoft’s Gamescom 2017 briefing, so an announcement could happen at that time. The briefing begins on Sunday, August 20, starting at 12 PM PT. That comes out to 8 PM BST and 5 AM AEST on Monday, August 21.

Hey ReCore players! Come back to our channels on August 20th to hear what’s next for #ReCore! Thank you for waiting & see you then. ? pic.twitter.com/NczoA7R5Z1

    — ReCore (@ReCoreGame) August 15, 2017

There have been rumors about a Definitive Edition of ReCore, so this could be the announcement that is being teased for August 20.

Designed by Mega Man‘s Keiji Inafune, ReCore launched in September 2016 at a budget price of $40. The game, which was the first in Microsoft’s Xbox Play Anywhere Xbox One/PC program, saw middle-of-the-road reviews. It was discounted quickly, and you can get it for around $20 right now.

For more on Recore, check out GameSpot’s review and what other critics are saying. In other news, the game is adding 4K support later this year.
