Take A Look At Canada In Civilization VI’s Gathering Storm DLC

In Sid Meier’s Civilization VI: Gathering Storm DLC, players can forge the destiny of the vast northern realm of Canada, helmed by the country’s seventh prime minister, Wilfrid Laurier.

With Canada, players will be able to farm on icy tundra tiles, purchase snowy plots at reduced rates, and construct ice hockey rinks to increase appeal and culture. The Great White North is a largely peaceful land, and as such its special ability is the Four Faces of Peace. Essentially, Canada cannot declare surprise wars, but likewise cannot be the target of one. The country also receives extra favor for tourism and diplomatic missions and is a solid choice for a diplomatic or cultural victory. Playing as Canada also grants players control over the famous red-shirted Canadian cavalry unit, the Mounties, which also have the unique ability to create national parks.

Civilization VI: Gathering Storm releases February 14. To get a glimpse of the Maori civilization, hop on over here.

  • Winter Wonderland Returns in Overwatch on Xbox One

It’s the most wonderful time of the year!

For the next three weeks, Overwatch is getting into the holiday spirit with the return of a seasonal event: Winter Wonderland! Expand your collection of seasonal items, enjoy two classic winter brawls, and get ready for lots of holiday fun and loot in this limited-time event.

This year, we’re celebrating by bringing back a pair of Overwatch players’ favorite Arcade brawls: Yeti Hunter and Mei’s Snowball Offensive. We’ve also decked the halls of the Blizzard World map with a sprinkle of wintry holiday cheer. But we know what you really want most: presents! Unlock new seasonal items—including legendary skins like Krampus Junkrat, Figure Skater Symmetra, Snow Fox Lucio, Snowboarder Zarya, Sugar Plum Fairy Mercy, and Biathalon Widowmaker—alongside winter gear from last year at reduced credit costs. And last but not least, there are also three new epic skins: Gift Wrap Bastion, Festive Reinhardt, and Winter Ashe (with appropriately decked-out Bob).

    Yeti Hunter

This 6-player brawl pits five Mei players against one Yeti player who uses Winston’s abilities. The Yeti must gather meat to unlock a powerful Primal Rage ability, making him immune to Mei’s freezing abilities and granting other powerful bonuses to help eliminate the hunters. Mei players have a new tool in their arsenal, too: a “Yeti Trap” ultimate ability to root their quarry in place. Yeti players must survive long enough to eliminate enemy Meis before they take him down. Which side will emerge victorious from the snow

    Mei’s Snowball Offensive

In this brawl, Mei’s Endothermic Blaster has been modified to fire a single, super-powered snowball. Taking down an enemy only requires one hit, but a miss can be costly. Once your weapon is empty, search for the nearest snow pile to reload. When the battle starts to heat up, you can activate Mei’s ultimate, which turns her blaster into an automatic snowball launcher, allowing you to fire continuously as your enemies scatter. Mei’s Snowball Offensive is playable on the Black Forest map as well as Ecopoint: Antarctica

    ‘Tis the Season

Celebrate the holiday season with Winter Loot Boxes, filled with new skins, emotes, highlight, player icons, sprays, voice lines, and more. You can also purchase items you missed from last year’s event with credits at a discount. Don’t wait too long—these Loot Boxes will disappear faster than holiday desserts.

Join us for some holiday cheer in Winter Wonderland 2019—see you in Overwatch!

Get the Overwatch Legendary Edition for Xbox One on the Microsoft Store today! The Legendary Edition includes 10 Bonus Loot Boxes with cosmetic goodies for your Overwatch heroes and more!

Closing an Idea Drive: Learn More About the Future of the Xbox Insider Program

We’re excited to announce that the Xbox Insider Idea Drive has been marked “Complete.” As a team, we’re incredibly grateful for all the terrific ideas and comments you submitted over the past few months. To close out, we’d like to review some of your top ranked ideas and provide a quick update on where they’re at:

    • Have an Icon Next to Gamertag to Show You Are an Insider (1461 votes) – We haven’t been able to provide Xbox Insiders with an icon for their Gamertags; however, we recently invited Xbox Insiders to redeem exclusive Xbox Insider Avatar gear via the Xbox Insider Hub. Learn more about our Level 2+ and Level 10+ Avatar shirts.
    • Integrate Microsoft Rewards in the Xbox Insider Program (1056 votes) – While we don’t have a specific update for this, we can say we’re researching this idea and other similar possibilities! For now, we plan to stay focused on bring our community early access to some of the coolest Xbox features and games out there!
    • Adding the Xbox Ideas Site into the Xbox Insider Hub (1042 votes) – After looking into this, we realized that more than 70% of the traffic to the Xbox Ideas site is from a mobile device or tablet! So, with most of the traffic off-console, we plan to keep Xbox Ideas on the web.  You can access the site through the browser on your Xbox console at any time, however.
    • Reward Insiders with Access to Alphas, Betas or Game Previews (1053 votes) – This is one of our primary goals, and we continue to partner with more and more game studios. These partnerships provide you with a sneak peek at a variety of games prior to general release while also ensuring game studios receive early feedback. It’s important to keep in mind that studios often choose to invite a specific subset of the Xbox Insider audience based on their needs.

    Avatar ShirtsAvatar Shirts

    • Reward you with items from the Store (1028 votes)  We’ve accomplished this by offering two Exclusive Xbox Insider Avatar t-shirts, now available to Xbox Insiders who have reached Level 2 or higher and Level 10 or higher! We have more thoughts on what we’ll deliver in the future, but we do want them to be a surprise.  We’re also encouraging game studios to provide DLC or Avatar gear as a “thank you” for your participation in their specific game flights.
    • Xbox Insider Hub on Mobile (603 votes) – We’re currently exploring different ways to offer the Xbox Insider Hub on a mobile device. Imagine being able to review Quest steps on your mobile device while completing them on your console or being able to join a flight and start downloading a game beta while on the go! Although we can’t currently do this, we are researching the work that would go into each of these scenarios and prioritizing from there.
    • Have more content available to Xbox Insiders (577 votes) – So far this year, we have had over 20 game flights, including Sea of Thieves, Super Mega Baseball 2, Vigor, and Fallout 76 as well as app flights for Twitch and EA Access.  Additionally, we have worked closely with the Xbox Platform and Localization teams to create more Quests and Surveys to gather structured feedback based on your Xbox One Experience. Our goal has been to have at least 1 Quest or Survey for every new Xbox feature, and to have from 1-5 surveys for each game flight, at the studio’s discretion. We’ve had Quests covering the new Avatar experience, My Games & Apps, and Store features like Wish List and Shopping Cart! Keep an eye out for more opportunities to provide feedback on new Xbox features and games in 2019!

     Xbox Insider BlogXbox Insider Blog

    • Providing more details and consistent release notes (544 votes) – We launched the Xbox Insider Blog a little over a year ago for this explicit purpose and have since posted ~300 stories, spanning release notes, playtest announcements, Team Xbox Q&As, and more.  You no longer have to launch the Xbox Insider Hub to read release notes, you simply need to check out the blog from a browser on your phone, tablet, PC or other Internet-connected device. We also worked with our mods to breathe life into the Xbox Insiders subreddit, where you can find and discuss every single Xbox Insider Blog post, and we unveiled the @XboxInsider Twitter account last summer.
    • Add Achievements to the Xbox Insider Hub (544 votes) – We prize transparency, and because of that, we’ll say that we don’t have plans to do this due to technical limitations. Xbox Insider XP (eXperience Points) may not seem quite as exciting as popping an Achievement, but it is a great way to advance your status in the Xbox Insider Program and gain access to even more game previews.
    • Notify me via email when new content is available (473 votes) – We’re currently exploring ways to improve notifications and are also planning to allow Xbox Insiders  to express their interest areas or preferences for previewing content with the program. For now, the Xbox Insiders Blog is the best place to go to find this information, but thanks for letting us know that email is much preferred over SMS-based notifications.

These are just a handful of your Top Requested Ideas for the Xbox Insider Program. We look forward to your participation in 2019 as we continue to release new Xbox System Updates and work with studios to provide more and more game playtests. As always, thanks for being an Xbox Insider and helping shape the future of Xbox on console, Windows and mobile devices.

  • Police Respond To Noise Complaint Over Smash Bros., Join In Playing

Police Respond To Noise Complaint Over Smash Bros., Join In Playing

It happens to everyone, even the most cautious gamer: you are playing a game with friends and things get a little too loud. When it happened to Jovante A. Williams and his friends during a game of Super Smash Bros., the cops got involved and showed up at the door alongside Williams. The officers were responding to a noise complaint from nearby neighbors, but stuck around to join the fight.

After the cops confirmed that there were didn’t seem to be an excessive amount of noise, they were getting ready to leave before they inquired to Williams what they were playing.

“I’m like, ‘Y’all wanna play Smash?!’” Williams told YahooLifestyle. “And two of them literally raised their hand and walked up. They’re like, ‘How do you jump?’ They were acting; one of them was playing Pikachu!” He noted that they seemed to actually be pretty experienced in the game.

When the officers first arrived at the scene, Williams was pretty concerned. “Of course, you’d bring more cops,” he thought when he first arrived. “It was concerning. You see so many videos of terrible results…I’m not trying to end up in jail or hurt, or have my friends harmed, or to start a commotion. But you know what? I heard the police asking ‘What’s Smash Brothers?’ Instead of something negative…it was something wholesome.”

  • Author Says Cancelled Metro 2033 Film Adaptation Was To Be Set In Washington D.C.

Author Says Cancelled Metro 2033 Film Adaptation Was To Be Set In Washington D.C.

The film adaptation for Dmitry Glukhovsky’s 2005 novel Metro 2033, which was successfully made into a video game back in 2010, has been cancelled and all rights have reverted back to the author. In his book, the post-apocalyptic story is set in the Moscow Metro and tackles themes of communism and xenophobia, both of which Glukhovsky felt were in jeopardy when MGM decided to relocated the story to America.

The author explained that, “In Washington D.C., Nazis don’t work, communists don’t work at all, and the Dark Ones don’t work,” and that, “They had to replace the Dark Ones with some kind of random beasts and as long as the beasts don’t look human, the entire story of xenophobia doesn’t work.”

Though it must be difficult to see a project so long in the making get scrapped – MGM originally gained the rights to Metro 2033 in 2012 – Glukhovsy has another Metro project to look forward to. Metro Exodus, a game being made by Deep Silver and 4A Games, is set to release on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC February 22. You can check out their concept for the snowy Russia wasteland here
