Should you buy a Nintendo Switch console this Christmas?

The Nintendo Switch, for the second year running, is the must-have console this Christmas season. After a few shakey home console years with the Wii U, Nintendo came back swinging with a transforming format that was at home in your living room as it was in your bag for on-the-go play.

But while the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One have been around the block and had their prices (and revised console builds) reflect that, Nintendo’s gear – as ever with the produce from the Mario House – has retained its premium pricing. And so, it’s one to think long and hard about before adding to your Christmas wishlist.

As ever, TechRadar is here to help. Thinking of jumping off the fence and diving into the world of Nintendo Switch? Here are the key arguments for and against Nintendo’s mighty console.

For: why you SHOULD buy a Nintendo Switch

Its library of games is fantastic

Consoles always get off to a slow start when they’re new. A few key exclusives here, a smattering of third party developers testing the waters here. But the Nintendo Switch is now in rude health when it comes to its games offering.

You’ve now got generational classics like Super Mario Odyssey and The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild sitting next to brand new must-haves like Pokemon: Let’s Go Pikachu and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Then you’ve got cross-platform smash-hits like The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and the superb Diablo 3, along with indie hits like Hollow Knight, Dead Cells, Golf Story and Stardew Valley.  We’ve talked in the past about the Nintendo Switch being the perfect “second console” for a home after a PS4 or Xbox One, but with a line-up like that now, it could very well deserve to be your primary machine.

It’s the best console for local cooperative and competitive multiplayer play

Since the days of the multi-tap and four-ported N64 console, Nintendo has always been very supportive of local multiplayer, and that tradition continues with the Nintendo Switch. Packed in with two controllers (each half of the motion-sensing Joy-Cons can act as its own individual pad), out of the box you’re ready to play. The fact that you can set it up with its onboard screen and kickstand mean that you can huddle around and play no matter where you are – and keep from annoying mum and dad on the big telly. It’s commitment to multiplayer titles is also key here though, with many supporting as many as eight local players at once, including the smashing Smash Bros. From Mario Party to Mario Kart to Overcooked 2 to Snipperclips, there are loads of ways to enjoy Nintendo Switch fun with a friend.

The Nintendo Switch is a perfect travel companion

The first of its kind, the Nintendo Switch can be docked with a bigscreen TV for living room play, or taking out as a handheld console with controllers attached to either side of its main unit screen, ready to be run off of batteries. As mentioned earlier, there’s even a kickstand so you can gather around with friends when no other screen is available. With so many of us travelling long distances to see loved ones over the Christmas period, this makes the Nintendo Switch perfectly suited for car, train or airplane trips, giving you the option to bring console quality play on the go with you.

    Great games on the horizon

It’s been a big year for the Nintendo Switch, but 2019 could be the year when the console truly comes into its own. We’re waiting on the releases of hotly anticipated titles like Metroid Prime 4, a fully-fledged all new Pokemon game, Luigi’s Mansion 3, a new Yoshi platformer, Doom Eternal and a new Animal Crossing game. Things can only get better from here on in.

Against: why you SHOULDN’T buy a Nintendo Switch

It could be cheaper after Christmas

However, with all the positives up top said and done, the Nintendo Switch is still a relatively pricey console for its age. Black Friday came and went without a killer price-cut or bundle deal, with the Switch’s price more-or-less staying the same in the run up to Christmas as it has in the entire 12 months preceding it. Could this change in the New Year? Post-Christmas sales can be a good time to pick up discounted items for those that can wait, and we’re getting to the point where a thorough price drop (or more generous bundle deals) will be needed to coax in gamers who aren’t Nintendo-fanatic early adopters.

Nintendo Switch Online service still needs refinement

Nintendo has never been all that great at online play, and the Nintendo Switch Online Service still leaves us wanting. While it’s affordable compared to the competition and its included library of classic old school NES games is fun, it lacks the polish of Sony’s PS Plus or Microsoft’s Xbox Live. It’s still too tricky to add and find friends, there’s no onboard console chat, and Nintendo’s own first party must-have online brawler, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, has courted controversy for the way it handles certain online play elements.

There could be a Nintendo Switch 2 on the way

This is still all whispers and hear-say, but rumor has it we could be seeing a new Nintendo Switch, even a Nintendo Switch 2, on the way before long. A Wall Street Journal report back in October stated that the company was planning a rejigged Switch that would make use of a higher-quality LCD screen that would not only look better and brighter than what’s currently on offer, but deliver improved battery life too. Existing peripherals are expected to work with the revised machine, with some slight hardware improvements and potential new software features.

Of course, it’s a rumor at this stage, with Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aimé stating the focus is on the current generation of hardware. But, with units to shift he would say that, right? And, if you look at the Nintendo Switch in the light of Nintendo’s previous handheld hardware, from the Gameboy to the 3DS each machine has had regular hardware reworkings. It may not come soon, but we’d put money on the fact this will be on the way before very long at all.

  • Fallout 76 finally gives PC gamers what they were asking for: FOV slider and ultra-wide monitor support

Fallout 76 has seen a big new update delivered to PC players (with the patch for the consoles expected to arrive tomorrow), and it brings a bunch of previously promised goodies including the ability to adjust ‘field of view’ and support for ultra-wide monitors.

Yes, with update 1.03.10 (which is around a 3GB download), PC gamers will benefit from a field of view (FOV) slider, which can be used to adjust the in-game view to take in a wider panorama (up to a maximum of 120 degrees). There’s also a depth of view slider that can be used to further customize your view of the world of Fallout 76.

Better still for those with an ultra-wide monitor, the game now supports these 21:9 aspect ratio displays (which give you a genuinely wider field of view at the hardware level, compared to a normal 16:9 widescreen).

All this is good to see, although of course, ideally it should have been in the game to start with.

    Chat change

Those playing on the PC also get a push-to-talk hot-key to facilitate voice chat (set to Caps Lock by default), and work has been done to improve Fallout 76’s overall performance levels, and the stability of the client, as well as further stability work server-side. The game should run more smoothly and streamlined all round, then, or at least that’s the theory.

And naturally Bethesda has been playing around with the game mechanics and making various tweaks for balancing issues – check out the full list of changes here, and note there are a fair old few. Grab the update via the Bethesda Launcher.

In other recent Fallout 76 news, the game has been accused of making it too easy for hackers to cheat and mess with other players, an allegation which Bethesda was swift to speak out against.

  • Nintendo would 'love' Red Dead Redemption 2 on Switch – here's why it isn't

Nintendo would 'love' Red Dead Redemption 2 on Switch – here's why it isn't

Nintendo president Reggie Fils-Aimé has explained why Red Dead Redemption 2 didn’t release on the Nintendo Switch.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter,  when asked if he would be interested in having a game such as Red Dead Redemption 2 on the Switch, Reggie explained that though Nintendo would “love” to have the title on its platform, it wasn’t that simple.

“Absolutely. We’d love for it to be there,” Reggie told The Hollywood Reporter. “But again –  and this is where there needs to be an understanding of just the development process –  Red Dead has been in development for years, time that predated any communication of Nintendo Switch. So, from the developer’s mentality, they need to move forward and finish the game they’ve been working on and then be in a position to look at other opportunities.”

Reggie went on to explain that most big third-party titles began development before the Nintendo Switch, which is why they potentially haven’t made it to the platform. “What happens moving forward? We’ll see,” he teased.

  • Nintendo Focused On The Current Switch, So Don't Expect A Revision Anytime Soon

    Reggie speaks out.

In the same interview with Forbes, Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aimé took time to discuss the current Switch sales and reinforced how the company’s immediate focus was on the holiday season.

When queried about a potential hardware revision, Reggie provided the following statement:

  • Smash Bros. Ultimate Sold 1.2 Million Copies In Japan During Launch Week

Highest opening week ever for a Smash game.

Following the sales data estimates for the Japanese release of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Famitsu has now published official sales numbers confirming the game sold exactly 1,238,358 million copies in its launch week. This figure reportedly does not include digital sales.

As we noted previously, this makes Ultimate the biggest Nintendo-published game launch in Japan ever, not including the Pokémon series. It’s also the best debut for the Smash series in Japan and the highest opening week for a Switch game. Ultimate also improved Nintendo’s hybrid console sales last week. Famitsu said the system shifted 278,313 units compared to the previous week when it sold 107,450 units. This has helped domestic Switch sales surpass the six million mark.

  • Video: SNES Classic Runs PSone Games Better Than The PlayStation Classic

    Classic Sony.

If you keep tabs on the competition, you will have no doubt have heard about the PlayStation Classic. Following Nintendo’s success with NES and SNES Classic systems, Sony decided to release a miniature version of its own legacy hardware.

Unfortunately, this particular system hasn’t lived up to expectations, with an underwhelming library of games due to licensing issues and some odd design choices. If that wasn’t enough, tech experts have found a lot of the games are the slower PAL versions and a list of far more exciting games that aren’t actually on the system have even been referenced in the source code. It’s safe to say, the system’s release has done more harm than good at this point.

  • Reggie: Don't Expect Nintendo Switch Online To “Mirror” The Competition

“Our focus right now is for NES content”.

In November, you might recall how Reggie Fils-Aimé said Nintendo Switch Online was going to be the place where users of the service could play all of their classic content. At the time, Reggie revealed the company hadn’t even made the full library of NES games available yet.

During a recent chat with Forbes, the President of Nintendo America reiterated how the focus right now was on the NES era:

“In terms of the legacy content, we’ve said that our focus right now is for NES content. And that’s what we’ll continue to push on.”

  • Random: Police Respond To Noise Complaint And End Up Playing Smash Bros. Ultimate

    Joining the fun.

Far and wide, the Super Smash Bros. series is known for bringing friends and family together. The latest entry Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is no different. Last Friday, a group of friends – located in Saint Paul, Minnesota – were hosting a small gathering for the new game on Switch when two local police officers showed up in response to a noise complaint from a neighbour.

Jovante M. Williams, who happened to arrive at his friends’ apartment at the same time as the police, told Yahoo Lifestyle how the group of friends had recently been playing their games on mute.

  • Destiny 2 Dawning Baking Recipes Guide: How To Make All Cookies And Get Your Dawning Cheer Sparrow

Destiny 2 Dawning Baking Recipes Guide: How To Make All Cookies And Get Your Dawning Cheer Sparrow

The Dawning, Destiny 2‘s holiday-themed event, is always all about gift-giving, just like the Halloween-themed Festival of the Lost is about wearing masks. Activities during the December event usually have you finding and giving gifts to the various characters in Destiny 2, and this year those gifts have a different twist–you’re baking treats for all the game’s major characters.

Destiny 2 is, of course, a game about shooting, so most of your confections will be crafted from the bones (and other parts) of your enemies. As you go marauding through the solar system, you’ll gain items you can stick in a special oven in order to make treats. Eva, the character who puts you on your quest, gives you one recipe for cookies, but the rest you have to find through trial and error–unless you have our guide.

Baking all the goods on Eva’s list and giving them to the people around the Tower will net you an Exotic sparrow, as well as a number of Triumphs. The Dawning runs through the month of December, so there may well be more rewards in store as well, in a similar way to how the Murder Mystery quest of the Festival of the Lost turned out to reward players with Thunderlord. Here’s everything you need to know to bake cookies in Destiny 2, as well as the recipes we’ve uncovered so far. We’ll update this list as more information and more recipes become know.

    Get Your Ingredients

The stuff you use to actually make the cookies comes from out in the world and completing various activities. For each batch of cookies, you’ll need three things: a common ingredient, a rare ingredient, and 15 Essence of Dawning.

Killing enemies in the world yields common ingredients based on what kind of enemy you kill; there’s something different for Fallen, Vex, Cabal, Taken, Scorn, and Hive. Rare ingredients drop based on the means of killing enemies. If you use explosives, you might get a Delicious Explosion ingredient; a sword kill could earn you a Sharp Taste. They’re mostly pretty easy to figure out, but a few are a little confusing. Here’s how to get each ingredient.

    • Delicious Explosion: Explosive kills
    • Sharp Flavor: Sword kills
    • Impossible Heat: Solar kills
    • Electric Taste: Arc kills
    • Null Taste: Void kills
    • Flash of Inspiration: Create Orbs of Light
    • Personal Touch: Melee kills
    • Perfect Taste: Precision kills
    • Bullet Spray: SMG and Machine Gun kills
    • Essence of Dawning: Complete activities in the solar system

    Recipes

These are the combinations we’ve found that yield specific cookies. Note that you need 15 Essence of Dawning for each recipe in order to make the oven work. We’ll keep updating this list as more recipes are discovered.

    • Gjallardoodles (deliver to Zavala): Ether Cane, Delicious Explosion
    • Infinite Forest Cakes (deliver to Failsafe): Vex Milk, Impossible Heat
    • Gentleman’s Shortbread (deliver to Devrim Kay): Ether Cane, Perfect Taste
    • Vanilla Blades (deliver to Shaxx): Cabal Oil, Sharp Flavor
    • Radiolarian Pudding (deliver to Asher): Vex Milk, Electric Flavor
    • Eliksni Birdseed (deliver to Hawthorne): Ether Cane, Personal touch
    • Chocolate Ship Cookies (deliver to Holliday): Cabal Oil, Null Taste
    • Telemetry Tapioca (deliver to Banshee-44): Vex Milk, Bullet Spray
    • Traveler Donut Holes (deliver to Ikora): Cabal Oil, Flash of Inspiration
    • Javelin Mooncake (deliver to Ana Bray): Chitin Powder, Sharp Flavor
    • Dark Chocolate Motes (deliver to the Drifter): Taken Butter, Null Flavor

    Don’t Throw Away Your Failures!

If you create a recipe combination that doesn’t work, you’ll get Burned Edge Transit cookies. You’ll lose whatever ingredients you put in, plus your Essence of Dawning that you needed to do the cooking. But just because your cookies are horrible doesn’t mean these are a total loss. You can’t get your lost ingredients back, but you can reclaim the Essence, which is something since every batch of cookies you make costs 15 Essence, and you need to complete activities to get more.

To get your Essence of Dawning back, head to the Tower and talk to the Cryptarch. He’ll accept your burnt cookies as gifts and trade you back 15 Essence–the complete cost of cooking the bad batch. You can then immediately try a new recipe if you’ve got the ingredients, without having to go find a Public Event or some other activity to complete.

    Earning Your Sleigh

To unlock the Dawning Cheer sparrow, you need to make a few specific cookies, as well as 12 batches in total. To unlock it to start, make Vanilla Blades, Chocolate Ship Cookies, and Eliksni Birdseed using the recipes above. Once you’ve delivered them, you’ll unlock the sparrow.

After you’ve got the sparrow, you can set about repairing it to complete a Triumph. We’ll update this section when we figure out the deal there.

  • Big Black Ops 4 Update, Operation Absolute Zero, Out Now On PS4

Treyarch’s first major post-launch content update for Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 has gone live for some players. Operation Absolute Zero is now available on PS4 (with an Xbox One and PC release set to follow soon), and it introduces a new character, daily Zombies missions, a revamped Black Market, and more.

Headlining the update is Zero, Black Ops 4’s newest playable Specialist. She can be unlocked by completing tier 1 of the new Black Market and will be available to use in both multiplayer and the Blackout battle royale mode. Zero specializes in hacking, and she can use her skills to “disrupt and distract enemies.”

Additionally, Treyarch has introduced a new area to the Blackout map: Hijacked. Inspired by the fan-favorite Black Ops II map of the same name, the luxury yacht can be found in the northwest quadrant of Blackout’s map. On top of that, the developer has added a new armored vehicle called the ARAV to the mode as well.

Zombies mode, meanwhile, has received new daily challenges dubbed Callings. Completing these will reward players with XP and Nebulium Plasma. Treyarch has also added a new Black Ops Authenticity Stamp system to the mode, which allows players to share the results of their game online with others.

Also of note, Treyarch has revamped the Black Market progression system to make it “simpler and more rewarding.” The developer has also added a new Assault Rifle and a “fast-firing” SMG that players can unlock through Contraband tiers. You can read more details about the update on the official Black Ops 4 website.

In addition to Operation Absolute Zero, PS4 players who own the Black Ops Pass now have access to another handful of content, including two new multiplayer maps, Elevation and Madagascar; a new Zombies chapter, Dead of the Night; and a new Blackout character, Reaper. PC and Xbox One players will get access to this content a little later due to Activision’s ongoing timed exclusivity agreement with Sony.
