Nintendo Switch Is The Fastest-Selling System Of The Generation Since Its Launch

The NPD Group (via a Nintendo press release) has declared that through its first 21 months on sale in the U.S., Nintendo’s Switch console is the fastest-selling system of this generation when compared to the other consoles over the same period.

From March 2017 to November 2018 the Switch sold more than 8.7 million units.

Nintendo has also announced that Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is the fastest-selling Switch title of all time – as well as for the series as a whole – and has sold over three million units in its first 11 days.

  • Rumor: Anaconda & Lockhart Are The Codenames For Microsoft's Next-Gen Consoles

Rumor: Anaconda & Lockhart Are The Codenames For Microsoft's Next-Gen Consoles

Windows Central is reporting from multiple sources that Microsoft’s full-featured next-gen system is codenamed Anaconda, while the more pared-down, streaming version is codenamed Lockhart.

At E3 this year it was reported that Microsoft is internally referring to its next-gen family of systems as “Scarlett,” and Windows Central’s recent report puts Anaconda and Lockhart within that family. Anaconda is the more powerful, expensive option, while Lockhart is the comparably cheaper, hardware-light streaming box. Both are scheduled for 2020.

The Scarlett family of systems including Anaconda and Lockhart are not to be confused with Microsoft’s other reported console plan for 2019, which is to introduce a digital-only Xbox.

  • DICE Changes Battlefield V Time-To-Kill Values Once Again

DICE Changes Battlefield V Time-To-Kill Values Once Again

A few weeks ago, DICE and EA were openly pontificating the ramifications of changing the time-to-kill value, basically how long it takes to kill an opponent, in Battlefield V multiplayer. While players enjoyed being able to kill opponents faster, they also disliked being killed so quickly, so DICE set up different servers to study and see how things play out in alternate matches.

They eventually decided to increase the time it takes for an enemy to keel over so that players can live longer and have theoretically better matches. The community didn’t really like this change. So now they’re changing it back.

“After rolling out those changes last week, we’ve listened to your feedback, reviewed our statistical data, and have made the decision to return to the original TTK values seen at launch,” a DICE spokesman wrote on the game’s subreddit. “Our intent with the TTK changes was to see if we could evolve the Battlefield V experience and make it more enjoyable for new players, whilst also making sure the Battlefield vets have a choice with a more ‘core’ experience suiting their preferred play-style. Clearly we didn’t get it right. Veteran players didn’t ask for the change, but as game developers, we took it upon ourselves to make those changes based on extensive data and deliberation. It truthfully wasn’t an easy decision for us.”

DICE admits that part of the problem is the ongoing issue of balancing a game for both veterans and new players, as it’s difficult to onboard new players when they die so quickly, even though veterans love the challenge of dodging bullets like Neo. While they erred toward the wants of veterans this time, they are seemingly not sure how to keep these two groups happy at the same time, but do have some plans that they will be rolling out in the future.

Battlefield V is available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. You can find our review of the game right here.

  • Life Is Strange 2: Episode 2 Keeps Walking on 24th January

    Captain Spirit returns.

Life Is Strange 2: Episode 2 will finally release on 24th January – an incredible four months after the first instalment. It’ll plot the return of an important character: Captain Spirit. Here’s the blurb from the press release: “As the two brothers struggle against the cold, Daniel gets increasingly ill. Sean decides that they must take the risk and make their way to their distant grandparent’s house to recover and seek shelter.”

It continues: “There, they encounter next-door neighbour Chris Eriksen, a young boy who believes he has powers eerily similar to Daniel’s, and they come face to face with his superhero alter ego, Captain Spirit. As Daniel and Chris are becoming fast friends, it’s up to Sean to make sure Daniel follows a set of rules they agreed on for his power: Never in public. Never talk about it. Run from danger.”

  • Nikola Tesla Horror Game Close to the Sun to Be Published by Wired Productions

    What a BioShock.

Back at Gamescom 2018, an interesting first person horror game was announced, before disappearing altogether. Close to the Sun looks pretty decent, adopting a similar look and feel to BioShock and starring the famed inventor. We still don’t know a whole lot about the game itself, but it’s recently been announced that Wired Productions has picked up publishing duties on the title.

Wired Productions is a relatively small publisher with a few games under its belt, namely The Town of Light, GRIP, Victor Vran: Overkill Edition, and more. Close to the Sun is currently still marked for release next year — hopefully we’ll learn more about the game itself soon.

  • Review: Borderlands 2 VR – A Handsome Adaptation

    You don’t know Jack.

Sony’s not stupid, and it seems to recognise that titles like The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and Borderlands 2 VR need to exist in order to get potential PlayStation VR adopters through the door. While headset veterans will accurately argue that it’s the titles like Astro Bot Rescue Mission and Beat Saber that really shine in virtual reality, sceptics will always demand those bigger brands before taking the plunge. And so here we are reviewing another PlayStation 3 port in a different dimension.

Gearbox’s loot-shooter isn’t quite as ubiquitous as Bethesda’s infamous action RPG, but it has popped up in a multitude of places since first debuting some six years ago. This is the full original game, minus its DLC and co-op functionality, which may make it a tough sell for some in 2018. While it’s missing some key components, however, this isn’t the half-hearted port that it seems to be on the surface, as it’s clear that 2K Games has invested a fair amount of effort to make this work in virtual reality.

  • Onimusha: Warlords PS4 Trophies Should Challenge Even the Toughest Samurai

Put your training to the test.

In a surprise reveal earlier this year, it was announced that Capcom would be bringing PS2 classic Onimusha: Warlords to PS4, with enhanced visuals and other mod cons. One such perk is the addition of trophies, and there are plenty of trinkets to collect in this old-school samurai slice-em-up — including a shiny Platinum. However, in order to get the top gong, it seems you’ll have to be a dab hand at the game.

While some are obviously quite straightforward, like absorbing souls with the gauntlet for the first time or defeating bosses, others look to be pretty challenging. ‘Blunt Sword, Sharp Mind’ tasks you with completing the game on Normal difficulty without upgrading your sword or using Jewels, and ‘None for Me, Thanks’ is rewarded to those who beat the game without using herbs or medicine. You’ll also need to beat the game on Ultimate difficulty and also complete it in less than three hours if you want to earn all the trophies. Click here to look at the full list.

  • This LoFi Valley PS4 Dynamic Theme Bundle Is Extremely Chill

    Truant Pixel returns.

First came a brilliant pack of synthwave themes, then a gorgeous globe-based backdrop — the PS4 has been getting some cracking dynamic themes lately. The company behind these, Truant Pixel, has created a huge number of top quality themes in the last few years. While it’s crafted some great ones for specific games, it’s definitely upping the ante with these more general skins.

Its latest offering can be seen in the above video. Called LoFi Valley, this is another series of themes that come as one package, or you can buy them individually. In the background is a full 3D forest scene, and playing over the top are some relaxing chillout tunes. Combined with time of day and seasonal changes, depending on your PS4’s date and time settings, the result is another brilliantly ambient set of themes. It’s going on sale today, but unfortunately, it looks like this is only available in North America for the time being — a release in other regions is currently TBD. Here’s hoping it makes the jump to other territories.
