  • Pokémon Go's Holiday Event Brings New Pokémon, Free Incubators

Pokémon Go's Holiday Event Brings New Pokémon, Free Incubators

Pokémon Go’s annual holiday event is looking a little more crowded than usual this year, as it will bring not only the return of the festive Pikachus, Deliberd, and free incubators from spinning discs, but new critters as well.

Munchlax, the pre-evolved version of Snorlax, will be added when the event next week, starting on December 18. They will be joined in 7km eggs by more common appearances by Smoochum and Azurill. Also in the update is the addition of Snover and its evolution Abomasnow, as well as Chingling, Croagunk, and the introduction of legendary Pokémon Azelf, Mespirit, and Uxie.

Of course, there are also the usual perks of it being the holidays in Pokémon Go as well. From December 18-22, players will earn double candy from catching monsters; from December 22-26, they’ll earn double stardust; after that until December 30, they’ll earn double experience points. Finally, from December 30-January 2, all those incubators you might have will be more effective at hatching eggs. There will also be new clothes in the shop in the style of Delibird.

  • John Carpenter Wants To Compose The Score For A Video Game

John Carpenter Wants To Compose The Score For A Video Game

John Carpenter, director of horror classics such as Halloween and The Thing would very much like to compose the score to a video game.

In a recent interview with music outlet Consequence of Sound, Carpenter was asked if his love of gaming had had any influence on his work. “I didn’t think of that, but I think there’s a part of me that’s dying to do a game score,” Carpenter said. “But I don’t think anybody will hire me. No one thinks about me to do music for games, that’d be great!”

Carpenter is known not only for the directorial work he’s done for movies, but for the iconic scores he’s helped create for them as well. He recently returned to the Halloween franchise for the recent remake to compose its score.

  • Battlefield V's Increased Time-To-Kill Is To Help New Players, DICE Creating New 'Core' Playlists

Battlefield V's Increased Time-To-Kill Is To Help New Players, DICE Creating New 'Core' Playlists

In a recent update to Battlefield V, DICE increased the health pools of all Battlefield V players in order to make the game more accommodating to new players, increasing the amount of time it takes to kill a player. After dedicated fans reacted negatively to the change and the limited options for playing with the faster time-to-kill, the developer will be adding new “core” playlists with the original health pools, the company announced yesterday.

The announcement was made on the Battlefield V community subreddit. Shortly after the patch increased the time-to-kill, many fans decried the change as the wrong move for the game. DICE’s post began by apologizing to players about their lack of communication about the patch. “Changes to the game carrying this kind of weight needs clearer, earlier communication before getting rolled out,” DICE said. “We will improve how we roll out updates in the future and respond more quickly when you have questions or concerns.”

“The intent came from us observing that new players are having a very hard time with the game compared to our core players, and we wanted to see if we could improve this over the holidays so more players can have a great time,” the post goes on to say. A lower time-to-kill can make the game feel faster and more active, but means there is less room for error when playing, making it harder for new players to get their bearings. These lower values, however, reward more precise play, which can make the game more satisfying once you learn the ins and outs.

For those players, DICE has created a solution. “To fix that, we will be adding a ‘Core’ version of all playlists in the game next week, giving you a clearer choice between new and old settings,” the post says. “We’ll update you early next week on when the new playlist will be added.”

For more on Battlefield V, check out our review.

On the surface the split solution sounds okay, but splintering the playerbase could hurt the game in the long run. Either matches will take longer to find (especially as players move on to other games). Additionally, it’s likely one kind of playlist is going to be more popular than the other, prompting most to spend more time in the more popular modes, which could effectively make these “core” playlists more of a appeasement tool than an actual solution.

  • Review: Desert Child – A Fantastic Retro Racer That's Way Too Short

    Eat my red dust.

Desert Child is pretty special. Stylistically, it’s a magical experience, its ‘90s adventure game art style mixing well with an absolutely fantastic soundtrack. Set on Olympia, a city on a fully-colonised Mars, in a not-to-distant future, its world is an intoxicating mix of cultures, from Aussie beach bums to Middle Eastern markets.

But for all the fun that you can have in Desert Child roaming its beautiful pixelated environments as a chilled soundtrack plods along, it’s still a racing game at heart. Though these races seem chaotic at first, with obstacles and explosions filling the screen as you try to dodge them while still beating your opponent to the finish line, you soon get the hang of it.

  • Kingdom Hearts III's Epilogue and Secret Movie to Be Added at Launch

    Not included in leaked copies.

A message from Kingdom Hearts III director Tetsuya Nomura has suggested that the sequel’s epilogue and secret movie scenes will be patched in to the final product at launch. The insinuation comes after Square Enix was forced to release a statement due to copies of the long-awaited title leaking almost a month prior to launch.

“The game’s planned epilogue and secret movie, which are the biggest spoilers in the game, are planned to be released at a later date just in case, so they will not be shown before the game’s release,” he wrote. Nomura acknowledged that the publisher knew the source of the leak, and it’s working to rectify it.

  • Granblue Fantasy Versus Is a New PS4 Fighting Game from Arc System Works

    And another one.

Geez, this Granblue thing is big business, huh? Cygames is not only paying Platinum Games to make a full-scale PlayStation 4 action RPG based on the smartphone series, but it’s also roped in Dragon Ball FighterZ developer Arc System Works for a fighter as well. The one-on-one brawler – named Granblue Fantasy Versus – will release on Sony’s console next year in Japan, but very few other details have been announced.

You can check out a trailer embedded above, though. To be honest, it looks to be more or less exactly what you’d expect from a modern Arc System Works fighter, with glorious 3D environments and bold sprite-like character models. We’re guessing that this is still relatively early in development, but it’s cool to see a company throwing cash around just because it, well, can.

  • PS4 Action RPG Exclusive Granblue Fantasy: Relink Is Looking Grand

    Under-the-radar Platinum Games title shines.

Perhaps it’s because there’s been no Western confirmation just yet, but it’s surprising just how much Granblue Fantasy: Relink is slipping under the radar. The PlayStation 4 exclusive action RPG – which is being developed by industry sweetheart Platinum Games – has been demoed in intricate detail as part of Cygames’ Granblue Fantasy Fes 2018 event, and it’s looking pretty great.

While the title is based upon a smartphone series, this looks a far cry from the gacha nonsense it’s inspired by. There’s a trailer embedded above which introduces the cast and characters, but it’s the gameplay footage that you’ll want to feast your eyes on, showcasing the character action combat and slick visuals. It genuinely looks really, really good.

  • Kingdom Hearts III Copies Hit the Streets a Month Before Release

    Taking the Mickey.

You may want to be careful out there Kingdom Hearts fans: copies of the long-awaited third instalment in the series have leaked – over a month prior to the sequel’s launch. Kingdom Hearts III videos are already being uploaded and shared around the web after an errant copy of the full-game found its way into one lucky player’s hands.

It seems that a handful of copies were briefly available via the Facebook Marketplace, but the listing has since been deleted. Of course, the Internet never forgets, and there are already videos of the opening hours of the title online. While we’re sure Square Enix will be diligent in removing any errant clips, the reality is that spoilers are about to become rife.

  • Jonathan Rhys Meyers in Trailer for Venice Mystery 'The Aspern Papers'

Jonathan Rhys Meyers in Trailer for Venice Mystery 'The Aspern Papers'

    The Aspern Papers Trailer

“Don’t try to pay me any compliments. I have been spoiled in this respect…” Cohen Media has debuted an official trailer for an indie romantic drama-mystery titled The Aspern Papers, set in Venice, adapted from Henry James’s 1888 novella of the same name. The story is about a passionate young writer who tries to obtain romance letters a poet sent to his mistress. He travels out to Venice and meets a suspicious elderly woman along with her quiet niece in their grand but dilapidated palazzo. Starring Vanessa Redgrave as Juliana, along with Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Joely Richardson, Poppy Delevingne, Lois Robbins, Jon Kortajarena, and Morgane Polanski. The film premiered at the Venice Film Festival earlier this fall, but I don’t recall hearing much buzz – good or bad – about this film during the festival or afterward. This looks like a sultry, seductive Venetian thriller in the vein of classic romance that might entice a few viewers. ›››
