  • Sony Patent Shows How Loading Screens Could Be Killed Off on PS5

    Why are we waiting.

Load times have become a big talking point over the last few months. It all started when we got our first PS5 details, learning that Sony’s next-gen machine will utilise a custom solid state drive that should dramatically reduce things like loading times. There was also the Marvel’s Spider-Man demo, which showed the game running on hardware comparable to the eventual PS5. Its load times were cut down to less than a second.

  • Is This Twitter Account Teasing a New Ape Escape Game?

    20th anniversary incoming.

We told you to watch this space back in April, and it looks like something might be on the horizon for fans of the long-dormant Ape Escape franchise. A new Twitter account has been set up to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the franchise, and its first tweet is most definitely an interesting one. Check it out below.

The tweet roughly translates as “It’s been 20 years since then. I have been running/escaping this whole time, but I wonder if anyone is even still chasing me anymore?” At face value, this could have been taken as a post simply honouring the 20 years of the franchise, but here’s where things get interesting.

  • Another Spider-Man PSVR Experience Releases This Week to Coincide with Far From Home

    Get ahead of the cinemas.

Spider-Man: Far From Home doesn’t hit cinemas until the very beginning of July, but a new PSVR experience coming later this week will give you the chance to don the Spidey suit early.

The release sounds a lot like the experience that released alongside Spider-Man Homecoming – a short but sweet swing across Queens as Peter Parker himself. There’ll be four different suits to pick between and a dangerous enemy to deal with once the headset is firmly in place. “In breathtaking virtual reality, you’ll finally have the chance to scale and swing from the highest towers in Manhattan.” We assume that this release will once again be free of charge.

  • Here’s a Better Look at Gran Turismo Sport’s Awaited Rain Update

    Wet and wild.

Update: Above is direct-feed footage of Gran Turismo Sport’s tasty rain update from an ongoing tournament taking place in Germany this weekend. Are you impressed?

Gran Turismo Sport is almost unrecognisable from the racer that released a few years back, but developer Polyphony Digital is not done expanded on the ever-evolving exclusive just yet. There has been strong speculation for a while that rain would be added in an upcoming update, and now off-screen footage of the feature has emerged, ahead of an FIA Championship event at the Nürburgring this weekend.

  • Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? – Issue 277

    Crash bash.

Oh goodness, here comes the sun. What should we do? Well, after months of moaning about the chilly weather, it’s probably time to complain that it’s too hot. That’s certainly what this author will be doing.

    Stephen Tailby, Associate Editor

Now that the Sun has finally come out, I’m going to completely ignore it and play some video games instead. In addition to getting a good kicking online in Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled, I’ll be strapping a box to my face and going on holiday with Vacation Simulator. Expect a review of my time away once I’m back.

  • Respawn Entertainment Discusses Metroid Style Design for Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order

    An “exploration game”.

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order looked fairly promising during its gameplay demonstration at EA Play earlier this month. What wasn’t made particularly clear is that the game’s structure is actually similar to that of series such as Metroid Prime. As explained by Jeff Magers, lead level designer on the title, Fallen Order is a game about free exploration and discovering new areas.

Speaking about the in-game map, Magers explains: “We want to trust the player to find their own way and discover this world without breadcrumbing them along”. The game lacks any objective markers, so you’ll need to figure things out using the environment and this 3D map, which is pretty cool.

  • Feature: We’re Making a Game with Dreams on PS4 – Issue 4

    A delay to the service.

Just as the headline states, we’re getting our creative juices flowing with Dreams, Media Molecule’s outrageously ambitious PlayStation 4 exclusive that opens the floodgates for user made content. Inspired by a commuter with an impressive appetite, our ongoing project is Snacks on a Train, the goal being a simple minigame about dipping tortilla chips in salsa. Sounds simple, right?

    Recap

So, it’s been a while. Apologies; a combination of review duties and E3 2019 meant we had to put this project on ice for a few weeks. However, we now feel like we’ve made enough progress to share another small update on our silly Dreams game. In the last update, we threw in some delicious crisp-crunching sound effects, and wrestled with getting the salsa jar moving the way we wanted it to. If you missed the last issue, click here.

  • Review: Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled – An Unapologetically Retro Racing Revival

    Resolution wump.

On a lot of levels, Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled is a resounding success. This Beenox recreation of the 20-year-old original looks and sounds fantastic, and it plays just like it did back in the day. For fans, it’s about as good a remake as you could hope for, but we’re not quite convinced that a prettified retread is enough of a jump.

What’s immediately clear is that the developer has a lot of reverence for the source material, and rightly so. Back in 1999, Crash Team Racing was the PSone’s answer to Mario Kart and Diddy Kong Racing, taking the bandicoot and his cohorts to the races with a fleshed out single player adventure and a unique boosting system. At the time, it was a brilliant alternative to Nintendo’s efforts, and easily the best kart racer to grace Sony’s original console. Two decades later, Nitro-Fueled sticks uncannily closely to the gameplay template laid out by the first game, and it results in a remake that’s both satisfying, and a little underwhelming, to play.

  • The Internet Has Decided on a Name for Cyberpunk 2077’s Platinum Trophy

    You’re beautiful, obvs.

“You’re beautiful,” beamed the Internet’s current BFF Keanu Reeves. It was basically the only memorable moment from a desperately dull E3 2019, and if fans have their way, it will be immortalised in Cyberpunk 2077. A trending Change.org petition has requested developer CD Projekt Red to name the upcoming RPG’s Platinum Trophy after the moment – and it’s already accumulated near to 30,000 signatures at the time of typing.

Given that the Polish studio has a penchant for listening to its community, we can see this making its way into the final game – especially if the campaign continues to gain steam over the coming days. Would you like the title’s final virtual trinket to be named after John Wick himself? Say something affectionate in the comments section below.

  • New Judgment Gameplay Video Shows Off Investigation, Combat, and Cats

    The eye of judgment.

We’re getting very close to the western release of Judgment, the new game from Yakuza Studio. The spin-off, starring private investigator Takayuki Yagami, is similar to the team’s other games, but has you on the right side of the law, looking into shady murder cases throughout Kamurocho. In this new, 20-minute gameplay video, we get a good look at the game and what you’ll be getting up to.

The whole thing looks very Yakuza, although it seems to be trying a few new things. Combat looks a little snappier, and you’re able to jump off walls and evade attacks easier. There are dialogue options that look to lead to some amusing scenarios, and it looks like the investigation is pretty straightforward. Spotting cats throughout the game is a fun distraction, too. The whole game looks like it has that brilliant sense of humour found in the Yakuza games.
