  • Wattam Might Have the Best Trophy Descriptions of All Time

    “You’ve pooped 101 times”.

We’re always keeping our eye out for new Trophy lists on Exophase, and the peculiar-looking Wattam just appeared on the site ahead of its planned December launch. It’s not your ordinary list of trinkets, however, because the Funomena title could have the best Trophy descriptions we’ve ever seen.

Thankfully, the 37 tasks on offer do amount to a Platinum Trophy at the end of it all, but it’s not even what the trinkets will have you doing that’s the best thing going on here. There appear to be numerous rewards for story progress, holding hands, and climbing high, but it’s the descriptions accompanying those Trophies that turns this into something pretty special.

  • Sony Files Patent for Curious New Cartridge

    Tomorrow is in your hands?

Sony has filed a patent for a curious new cartridge in Brazil, raising speculation about the nature of the product it’s designed for. The last cartridge-based console that the company released was the ill-fated PS Vita, and with the PlayStation 5 already confirmed to include a 4K Blu-ray drive, it’s unlikely to be related to that. Could this be a new handheld?

The answer is almost certainly no, because we’ve been here before, haven’t we? Around this time last year, the platform holder patented a strangely shaped cartridge, prompting all sorts of speculation. Those rumours were quickly quelled, however, when it emerged that the device was actually for the Sony Toio, a toy only available in Japan.

  • Mini Review: Valfaris – Heavy Metal Headliner Is Hellishly Worthy

Go to Hell, for Heaven’s Sake.

Valfaris isn’t interested in pleasantries and introductions. The Slain: Back From Hell spiritual successor is a headbanging romp across an alien planet that lets the action do the talking. Teeming with the Devil’s deadliest associates, it’s 2D shooting mayhem that manages to match impressive enemy designs with hellish weaponry ready to slaughter.

There’s clearly no rest for the wicked down under, with an unrelenting horde of creatures to blame. This is non-stop conflict that only just makes enough room for a handful of enjoyable platforming sections here and there. That’s no bad thing, however, because Valfaris is intensely exhilarating. Equipped with a melee weapon and two guns of your choosing, downing enemies is relatively simple but it becomes a vastly different experience as more and more combatants flood the screen. Crowd control is a consideration while the game borders on becoming a bullet hell shooter.

  • Narrative Adventure Where the Water Tastes Like Wine Heads to PS4 This December

    Finally comes to consoles.

The story-based adventure title Where the Water Tastes Like Wine, which includes writing from various video game critics, is headed to PlayStation 4 on 2nd December. Described as “a game about wandering Depression-era America, collecting stories ranging from tales of terrifying ghost children to the legend of Pecos Bil”, it’s your job to share these stories with the people you meet.

Featuring the likes of Waypoint’s Austin Walker and Kotaku’s Gita Jackson, each person tells of their background, religion, and the events that have shaped their lives. It’s supposed to be a fairly good experience, with a Metacritic score of 74 to boast of upon its PC release, but the game is perhaps best known for its creator deeming the title a commercial flop. Speaking with Polygon, Johnnemann Nordhagen said: “The game has not performed as well as I had hoped or expected.” Let’s hope this PS4 release at least increases those sales somewhat.

  • Sony’s Worldwide Studios Celebrate the Release of Death Stranding with Brilliant Artwork

    Decima pals.

Sony’s own development studios are pretty well known for congratulating each other whenever one of their games launches, and it seems some Worldwide Studios teams are treating Kojima Productions the same way. Death Stranding is out today on PlayStation 4, and to celebrate, the likes of Guerrilla Games and Sucker Punch Productions have shared some delightful artwork.

In Guerrilla’s piece, we see Aloy and Sam Bridges riding along on his motorbike:

  • Monster Hunter World: Iceborne’s Resident Evil Crossover Quest Is Live on PS4

    Take the Green Herb?

Hot on the heels of Monster Hunter World: Iceborne’s latest update (11.50), the title’s new event quest is now live on PlayStation 4. For those out of the loop, we’d recommend watching the trailer that we’ve embedded above — it’s pretty crazy.

Yep, it’s time to take down a dodgy Vaal Hazak so that you can get your hands on layered Resident Evil armour sets. Both Claire and Leon skins are up for grabs, but it sounds like this particular Elder Dragon may cause you a few problems. The Capcom blog says you’ll need to gather green and red herbs to combat the creature’s spores. And yes, you can combine them to make a more potent item. Classic.

  • ANTHEM’s New Mass Effect Skins are Probably the Coolest Things in the Game at This Point

    But they ain’t cheap.

BioWare’s added four Mass Effect-inspired skins to ANTHEM, just in time for N7 Day. And you know what? They’re actually pretty cool. The Ranger gets a Turian skin, the Colossus gets a Krogan skin, the Storm gets an Asari skin, and Interceptor gets a Quarian skin.

  • Mini Review: Antigraviator – This Anti-Gravity Imitator Wipes Out on PS4

    So-so, speed racer.

WipEout is an excellent target to aim for, but rarely do attempts at recapturing the series’ magic get it right. Unfortunately, that’s the case with Antigraviator, a newly released, high speed, anti-gravity racing game. It features a handful of different customisable ships to pilot through a few different race types, and swaps out weapon pick-ups for traps that remind us of Split/Second: Velocity’s environmental takedowns. Sadly, even this gimmick doesn’t do enough to make the game stand out.

It plays roughly as you’d expect, and rough is the word. While the ships are responsive to your inputs and it’s ultra-fast, you’re traveling at such speeds that turning becomes almost impossible without hitting the barriers. You can use an air brake and barrel rolls to make tighter turns and adjustments, but even then you’re still going to be grinding along those outer walls; if you have difficulty with WipEout, forget Antigraviator. Even the AI struggles to fly a clean lap. The aforementioned traps are pretty much unavoidable, and difficult to trigger against opponents because you’ll fly by them so fast.

  • Influx of Fake Elden Ring Leaks Have Souls Fans Nervous

    Supposed alpha test isn’t real.

Remember Elden Ring? The collaborative effort between From Software and Game of Thrones‘ George R.R. Martin was one of E3 2019’s biggest announcements, but we’ve heard absolutely nothing from the project since. The radio silence already has the Souls community a little bit nervous, but the fake leaks currently doing the rounds aren’t helping either.

The game’s Reddit page is in an awkward place at the moment as it puts up with supposed video clips of an Elden Ring alpha test that isn’t actually real, while rogue members are making fake lore posts that are being disguised as actual information. The lack of concrete facts clearly has a lot of people restless thanks to an uneasy feeling about the place.
