  • Square Enix Planning Next-Generation Action Game Experience

    A cut above.

Looks like Square Enix has received its PlayStation 5 devkits, as the company’s First Development Division is currently busy beavering away on a new intellectual property for console. The studio – which is also behind the upcoming Final Fantasy VII Remake – claims that it’s working with an “international team of creators” to realise a “next-generation action game experience that goes beyond the framework of existing action games”.

Our guess is that this is still early in development so we probably won’t see it for a while – and that’s assuming that the project gets off the ground at all. It’s hard to speculate about the nature of the title with so little to go on, but we’re always excited by new ideas.

  • Horizon: Zero Dawn 2 Will Probably Have the Best Foliage on PS5

    Park life.

Have you seen Death Stranding? It’s arguably the best looking game on the PlayStation 4, and it shows how far the Decima Engine has come since the release of Horizon: Zero Dawn a couple of years ago. Of course, a sequel to Aloy’s inaugural outing is almost certainly in the offing for the PlayStation 5, and you should expect it to look extraordinary based on Guerrilla Games’ past exploits.

Well, that and the fact that it’s got an entire team dedicated to working on foliage for the follow-up. A job listing for a Technical Vegetation Artist (yes, that’s a real title) explains that candidates will be responsible for “the creation of vegetation assets that are used to dress the game world”. It continues that Amsterdam studio has “four teams dedicated to creating the stunning environments of Horizon”.

  • Soapbox: The Most Frustrating Thing About Enthusiast Gamers

Sammy’s tired of those who reject new ideas.

When you spend as much time in and around real and virtual gaming communities as I do, there are always going to be things that get on your nerves. I used to get really irritated by some of the stuff I read in enthusiast forums. I’m a bit older these days, and my priorities have changed; I’m not going to pretend I have the most complicated of lives, but I do have the occasional issue which demands headspace – certainly over the latest hot take on ResetEra, anyway.

There’s one consistent trait that continues to irritate me about gaming enthusiasts, though: a deep-rooted resistance to change. This dates back as far as I can remember, but I most recall being frustrated by it with the Nintendo Wii; the system’s eventual success was inevitable to anyone who’d watched casual experiences like SingStar and Buzz explode on the PlayStation 2, but it was a laughing stock for the longest time – I didn’t ever really understand why.

  • Soapbox: Return of the Obra Dinn Is Outstanding, Save for One Blasted Trophy

Stephen’s quest for treasure has left him sea-sick.

I’ve never really considered myself an avid collector of PlayStation trophies, but my attitude to them has certainly shifted over the last few years. After a long time largely ignoring the supplementary awards, I earned my first Platinum trinket with the excellent Rocket League. I’m not quite sure what happened, but following this milestone, I’ve gathered myself another 15 more, seemingly through no real effort on my part. I’ve decided that I’m simply earning Platinums for games I truly enjoy — either that, or they’re just plain easy.

I was lucky enough to review Return of the Obra Dinn, a mystery adventure game about a 19th century ship that’s returned to port after a disastrous voyage should’ve left it at the bottom of the sea. Long story short, it’s spectacular. You’re tasked with identifying and explaining the fate of all 60 people aboard the ship during its demise, and putting everything together makes you feel like a genius. I highly recommend it if you’re after something fresh, intellectual, and truly one of a kind.

  • Feature: How a French Firm Created PS4’s Answer to the Xbox Elite Controller

    Talkin’ ’bout a Revolution.

Microsoft had Sony sweating in 2015. The American organisation had just announced the Xbox One Elite controller at E3 2015, a souped-up handset designed for serious gamers. With customisable button mapping, a premium-grade steel chassis, interchangeable rear paddles, and “hair trigger locks” enabling users to personalise tension, the device quickly established itself as the go-to pad for hardcore players. The problem? PlayStation didn’t have an answer.

Around the same time, the Japanese giant was at Nacon’s headquarters in Lille in order to sign-off on some unrelated licenses. The relatively new firm – established in 2014 as a subsidiary to publisher BigBen Interactive – was busy beavering away on a pro controller for the PC, and it had a prototype in its office which PlayStation paid particular attention to. The manufacturer had a task for the French company: could it pivot, and build a premium peripheral for the PlayStation 4 instead?

  • PlayStation Plus November 2019 PS4 Games Announced

    Samurai horror.

November 2019’s PlayStation Plus games have been revealed. As per usual, subscribers to Sony’s service are getting two PlayStation 4 titles: intense action role-playing game Nioh and the creepy Outlast II. We reckon that’s a pretty decent duo, even if the latter’s going to be a bit late for Halloween. Both games will be available to download on the 5th November.

  • Hands On: Nioh 2 Could Be the Toughest Souls-Like to Date

    Prepare to die.

We’re not ones to boast, but we sort of have to be pretty good at video games in order to do our jobs properly. We’ve managed to beat every Dark Souls entry there is, Bloodborne, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice — you name it and we’ve probably clocked it. However, Nioh 2’s open beta just kicked our arse. Playable for the next 10 days, Koei Tecmo’s follow-up to the 2017 samurai spin on the Souls formula could be the hardest one yet.

Of course, we’re probably a little rusty having not played the original for quite some time, but muscle memory should have kicked in fairly quickly. The open beta appears to take place at the very beginning of the game, with a quick dabble in the character creation suite enough to differentiate your avatar from anyone else on the ancient Japanese battlefield. You’re tasked with making your way to a castle way off in the distance, and there’s a whole host of human and supernatural enemies in your path to slay. That is if you’re up to the task.

  • Random: Popular PS4 Games Reimagined as Retro PSone Releases

    Nostalgia hit.

The likes of Horizon: Zero Dawn and Bloodborne are great PlayStation 4 games, but what if they’d launched on the PSone? Reddit user IanMazgelis has reimagined the aforementioned exclusives, along with Gravity Rush 2 and NieR: Automata, with some fairly authentic looking 90s cover art. The results speak for themselves:

  • Review: Death Stranding – Hideo Kojima’s Next Revolutionary Masterpiece

    I’m not that Fragile.

When Hideo Kojima stated that his next project would bring about an entirely new genre, he wasn’t joking. Death Stranding may feel familiar in minor mechanical means, but it’s also wholly unique among a sea of AAA titles eager to take advantage of the latest RPG levelling system. It’s a social experience where you never see another human player, a narrative-based affair that rivals Metal Gear Solid, and a harsh, thankless undertaking full of otherworldly menaces. Death Stranding is unlike anything else that has come before it, making for one of the very best PlayStation 4 games around.

Despite a handful of lengthy trailers and over an hour’s worth of in-game footage, Kojima Productions’ first title since splitting from Konami still very much remains a mystery. That’s on purpose, but gameplay-wise, Death Stranding is exactly what you think it is. Making deliveries is the name of the game, and it’s your job to work out a reasonable route to those designated destinations.

  • Bluepoint Games Tackles PS5 Speculation with Top Trolling

    Having a blast.

Bluepoint Games is making a “big game” for the PlayStation 5, which we expect to be Demon’s Souls Remake. Of course, nothing’s been confirmed at this stage, and the Texas-based developer is having fun with all of the speculation. In order to celebrate Halloween, it’s composed a tweet which somehow manages to reference at least seven PlayStation associated franchises.

    The referenced franchises include:
