New US Trailer for Cult Sci-Fi 'How to Talk to Girls at Parties' from A24

How to Talk to Girls at Parties Trailer

“They must be from California…” A24 has debuted another trailer for John Cameron Mitchell’s adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s How to Talk to Girls at Parties, even though we’ve seen a few international trailers previously. HtTtGaP is totally wacky cult sci-fi film that premiered at the Cannes Film Festival this summer to mixed reviews. The film stars Tony-winner Alex Sharp as Enn, a boy from the dreary London suburb of Croydon. Set in the late 70s, it’s a punk rock-infused, horny-adventure about a group of punk kids who discover a secret convent of aliens visiting planet Earth. The cast includes Elle Fanning, Nicole Kidman, Ruth Wilson, Matt Lucas, and Tom Brooke. I did not care for this film at all, and while this is a good marketing push from A24, it’s going to be forgotten, which is cool because it will be a cult classic even faster. ›››

  • James Franco in First Bad Trailer for 'Mad Max' Rip-Off 'Future World'

James Franco in First Bad Trailer for 'Mad Max' Rip-Off 'Future World'

    Future World Trailer

“It was at that moment I became aware of exactly how different I was.” Lionsgate has released a trailer for a movie called Future World, a post-apocalyptic, sci-fi action western that looks quite a bit like a straight-up rip-off of Mad Max. Yep, really. The title also sounds like it’s a spin-off of “Westworld”, but thankfully these two are different. This looks so bad I really don’t even want to give it any attention, but only just to be amazed at how much of a rip-off this is – sand motorcycles and grungy cars and everything. James Franco co-directs, and stars along with Milla Jovovich, Lucy Liu, Margarita Levieva, Suki Waterhouse, Method Man, Snoop Dogg, Elisha Henig, and Scott Haze. It might just be a bad trailer, it also might just be a bad movie. Whatever the case, this looks downright horrible and I hope film fans stay far, far away. ›››

  • Official US Trailer for the Magnificent, Poetic Documentary 'Mountain'

Official US Trailer for the Magnificent, Poetic Documentary 'Mountain'

    Mountain Trailer

“A journey to the world’s highest peaks.” Greenwich Entertainment has debuted an official US trailer for the documentary Mountain, from Sherpa director Jennifer Peedom. This was first conceived as a live experience with the Australian Chamber Orchestra, where you watch and listen to them play the score live. It is also being released as a feature documentary, stopping by the London and Helsinki Film Festivals. And it’s finally arriving in US theaters this May. Peedom collected the most mesmerizing and incredible footage of mountains and mountain climbing you’ve ever seen, and put it all together in this poetic doc about these majestic, monumental beauties of Earth. In addition, there’s a narration by Willem Dafoe and a stunning orchestral score. I had a chance to see this last year and it’s truly spectacular, packed with amazing footage. ›››

Four Friends Search for a Jazz Legend in LA in 'Flock of Four' Trailer

    Flock of Four Trailer

“Does your mother know you’re going down there on a Friday night?” Abramorama has released the first trailer for a hazy, indie drama titled Flock of Four, the feature directorial debut of director Gregory Caruso. We haven’t heard much about this yet, but it actually seems like a nifty story for a film, and it looks pretty darn good. Set over the course of one night in 1959, the film follows four best friend teens who drive around Los Angeles searching for one of their music idols, legendary jazz musician Pope Dixon (a fictional character inspired by real musicians), as played by Reg E. Cathey (who passed away in February). The cast includes Braeden Lemasters, Uriah Shelton, Isaac Jay, and Dylan Riley Snyder as the friends, as well as Shane Harper, Coco Jones, and Nadji Jeter. I like the vintage look and feel to this. Take a look. ›››

  • First Teaser Trailer for Edgy 'The Artist & The Pervert' Documentary

First Teaser Trailer for Edgy 'The Artist & The Pervert' Documentary

The Artist & The Pervert Trailer

“Some call them perverted. Others, revolutionary.” What do we have here? The first trailer has debuted for a new documentary titled The Artist & The Pervert, from filmmakers Beatrice Behn (who also is editor-in-chief of German film website Kino-Zeit.de) & René Gebhardt. This edgy, provocative film profiles the relationship between George, a famous Austrian composer, and his wife Mollena, a renowned American kink educator. After 40 years of looking for the right person, they finally found each other, and live happily in a BDSM slave/master relationship. This film documents their lives between perversion, art, love and radical self-determination, challenging our pre-conceived feelings towards this kind of relationship. This is just a teaser trailer, our first glimpse, but I’m very curious about it. I like docs that challenge me to be more open. ›››

  • Final Trailer for John Krasinski's Excellent Horror Movie 'A Quiet Place'

Final Trailer for John Krasinski's Excellent Horror Movie 'A Quiet Place'

    A Quiet Place Trailer

“If they hear you, they hunt you.” Paramount has revealed one final trailer for the sci-fi horror thriller A Quiet Place, from director John Krasinski, who also stars. This movie opens in theaters at the end of the week and it’s an excellent, near-perfect horror thriller (read my full review), I can’t recommend it enough. The film is about a family living quietly on a farm, keeping to themselves. Some kind of monsters have taken over the world but they only hunt by sound, so if you stay quiet they can’t find you. Emily Blunt also stars, along with kids Noah Jupe and Millicent Simmonds (who you may recognize as the deaf actress from Wonderstruck). I had a chance to see this recently, and I loved it, really loved it – lives up to the hype yet knows exactly what it is and doesn’t try to be more than that. This is definitely worth seeing in the cinema. ›››

  • Martin Freeman is a Daddy in First Trailer for Zombie Thriller 'Cargo'

Martin Freeman is a Daddy in First Trailer for Zombie Thriller 'Cargo'

    Cargo Trailer

“You’re the first people I’ve seen. You’re the first people… who are still people.” The first Australian trailer has debuted for a dramatic horror thriller titled Cargo, from directors Ben Howling and Yolanda Ramke. Even though this seems like a horror comedy, it’s actually more of an intense thriller. Martin Freeman stars as a father trying to save his child at all costs in a post-apocalyptic world. The film’s full cast includes Anthony Hayes, Susie Porter, Caren Pistorius, Kris McQuade, Natasha Wanganeen, Bruce R. Carter, Simone Landers, and David Gulpilil. As wacky as the pitch for this might seem, it looks like an engaging, suspenseful zombie flick. I’m also glad this trailer isn’t from America, because they would never allow this much blood, but it’s just naturally a part of the movie so it’s all over the footage, of course. Enjoy. ›››

  • Official Red Band Trailer for Action Thriller 'Revenge' with Matilda Lutz

Official Red Band Trailer for Action Thriller 'Revenge' with Matilda Lutz

    Revenge Trailer

“Never take your mistress on an annual guys’ getaway, especially one devoted to hunting – a violent lesson for three wealthy married men.” Neon has debuted an official red band trailer for an action thriller titled Revenge, from newcomer Coralie Fargeat making her feature directorial debut. This played to some rave reviews at Fantastic Fest and TIFF last year, and seems like a gritty film with a helluva pitch (see the one-line synopsis at the start of this post). Matilda Lutz stars as Jen, with a cast including Kevin Janssens, Vincent Colombe, and Guillaume Bouchède. It’s described as a “razor-sharp feminist subversion of the revenge-thriller”, that “gloriously blurs the lines of vengeance and survival while simultaneously delivering a ferocious dissection of gender and genre.” Sounds awesome, doesn’t it? Yes, you might want to take a look. ›››

  • Trailer for Spike Lee's 'Pass Over' Adapting Antoinette Nwandu's Play

Trailer for Spike Lee's 'Pass Over' Adapting Antoinette Nwandu's Play

    Pass Over Trailer

“What you fix to do today, man?” Amazon Studios has released the first official trailer for the new Spike Lee joint, titled Pass Over, an adaptation of Antoinette Nwandu’s stage play. This isn’t so much of a movie, Lee has instead decide to film the play as a performance piece, and release it on Amazon that way. Nwandu’s Pass Over is a fresh, “provocative riff” on Waiting for Godot, about two boys standing on a Chicago street corner. “As they dream of their promised land, a stranger wanders into their space with his own agenda and derails their plans. Emotional and lyrical, Pass Over crafts everyday profanities into poetic and humorous riffs, exposing the unquestionable human spirit of young men stuck in a cycle just looking for a way out.” Starring Blake DeLong, Ryan Hallahan, Jon Michael Hill, Julian Parker. This looks quite brilliant. ›››

  • Full US Trailer for Cute Japanese Anime Musical Film 'Lu Over the Wall'

Full US Trailer for Cute Japanese Anime Musical Film 'Lu Over the Wall'

    Lu Over the Wall Trailer

“Everyone, friends! Everyone, friends!” GKids has released the US trailer for the extremely cute, Japanese anime musical Lu Over the Wall, which won Grand Prize at the prestigious Annecy Animation Festival, and played at the London Film Festival last year. From Japanese anime filmmaker Masaaki Yuasa (Mind Game, “Devilman: Crybaby”), this “joyously hallucinogenic” film is about a lonely, awkward musician boy in a small Japanese town on the water. One day he meets and befriends a mermaid who loves to dance to the music he creates with his band. This sets off all kinds of problems in the village, where they’re afraid that mermaids bring disaster. The voice cast includes Kanon Tani, Shôta Shimoda, Shin’ichi Shinohara, and Akira Emoto. However, the US release is an English dubbed version, for those thinking of seeing this. I caught this film in London and did not like it at all, very messy and incoherent and way too long. Have fun. ›››
