“We have an important task for you…” HBO has launched a full-length official trailer for Ramin Bahrani’s Fahrenheit 451, a new feature film adaptation of Ray Bradbury’s seminal work about a dystopian book-burning future America (which was made into a film in 1966). Oh my does this look good, and frighteningly accurate in relation to what’s currently happening in America. This version stars Michael B. Jordan as Guy Montag, a young fireman who struggles with his role as a law enforcer. The full cast includes Michael Shannon, Sofia Boutella, Keir Dullea, Chris Gleason, Martin Donovan, Lilly Singh, Grace Lynn Kung, Joe Pingue, and Sean Jones. I am so, so in for this and can’t wait to watch the entire film. Trust in Bahrani! He’s a great filmmaker, and I have a good feeling he’s made one of his strongest yet with this film. ›››

“I noticed that know matter how much people had – they still wanted more.” Amazon has debuted a trailer for the superb documentary Generation Wealth, from photographer / filmmaker Lauren Greenfield (also of The Queen of Versailles). This first premiered at the Sundance and Berlin Film Festivals, and it’s an outstanding doc about how our obsession with money has actually gotten worse, and destroyed more lives, than anything positive. Greenfield takes a long-form look at her photography work, by examining a series of shots she took of wealthy kids in Los Angeles and following up with them today to see where they are. In addition, she profiles other wealthy (and formerly wealthy) people and asks them what it means to them. I adore this doc because it perfectly posits how greed will be America’s downfall, with endlessly compelling examples of people good and bad. If you aren’t actually aware just yet, maybe this film will open your eyes. ›››

“It’s all in the mind, y’know…” Get your psychedelic drugs ready, it’s time to take a trip back into the wacky world of The Beatles’ Yellow Submarine. The classic, wacky animated movie Yellow Submarine, released in 1968 as The Beatles’ fourth feature film, is returning to theaters/cinemas in the US and UK. Abraorama has announced the re-release for the 50th anniversary, which will feature a brand new 4K digital restoration of the film. The restoration was done carefully frame-by-frame in order to maintain the delicate nature of the original hand-drawn artwork. It also features a completely new mix in 5.1 stereo surround sound. As always, when a film like this heads back to the big screen, it’s the best time to catch it and experience it the way it was meant to be seen. This is one of those films I still haven’t watched, so I’m looking forward to this. ›››

“Who’s this boy who waits for you everyday?” Grasshopper Films has released an official US trailer for a rebellious drama titled Ava, from Iran, the feature debut of filmmaker Sadaf Foroughi. Deemed “exquisite” and “spellbinding,” the film premiered at the Toronto Film Festival last year, and stopped by the Göteborg Film Festival, Portland Film Festival, and New Directors/New Films earlier this year. Ava tells the story of Ava, played by Mahour Jabbari, a high school girl in Iran. Her life becomes more complicated after her mother catches her in an act of rebellion. The cast includes Bahar Noohian, Vahid Aghapoor, Parnian Akhtari, Sarah Alimoradi, Mona Ghiasi, and Houman Hoursan. Rebel, young Ava! This looks great. Impressive cinematography, to go with an inspiring story of fierce independence in the face of oppression. ›››

“In order to change her rank she had to change the rules.” Cinedigm has released the trailer for a high school, teen comedy titled Class Rank, one of the first two films directed by actor-turned-filmmaker Eric Stoltz (his other film is Confessions of a Teenage Jesus Jerk). It’s described as a “quirky teen comedy about placement, politics and finding your voice.” The story follows two high school outsiders who join forces in an attempt to overtake the school board. Guided by their families, they enter the perilous word of politics and, in the process, learn a thing or two about love. Yep. Class Rank stars Olivia Holt, Skyler Gisondo, Kristin Chenoweth, plus Bruce Dern. This makes me want to watch Alexander Payne’s Election again. ›››

“What if he IS innocent?” Saban Films + Lionsgate have released the first official trailer for an indie offbeat comedy titled The Escape of Prisoner 614, from first-time director Zach Golden. The film is about two inept, small-town Sheriff’s Deputies who catch an escaped prisoner that they believe was wrongly convicted. There’s some fun trickery and twists in this, as far as I can tell, and it looks kooky but very funny and quite smart, to be honest. Ron Perlman stars as one of the sheriffs, with a cast including Martin Starr, Jake McDorman, and George Sample III as Prisoner 614. It reminds me a bit of O Brother, Where Art Thou?, but with a totally different feel. I’m digging the footage for this, will definitely toss it in my queue to watch. ›››

“If I don’t make it to the hills, you’re all I’ve got…” Netflix has released another, additional US trailer for the horror thriller Cargo, from directors Ben Howling and Yolanda Ramke. We already posted the Australian trailer for this a few days ago, and they’ve followed up with this preview which plays a bit differently – more about the zombie hunters than the survival of this guy. Martin Freeman stars as a father trying to save his child at all costs in a post-apocalyptic world. The film’s full cast includes Anthony Hayes, Susie Porter, Caren Pistorius, Kris McQuade, Natasha Wanganeen, Bruce R. Carter, Simone Landers, and David Gulpilil. This does look fairly entertaining, but it doesn’t seem to be any reinvention of the zombie genre, just another zombie story. This trailer does more clearly show the 48 hour countdown. “We all have our demons.” What the heck is this? Vertical Entertainment has revealed an official trailer for a very weird indie film titled The Cleanse, formerly known as The Master Cleanse when it first premiered two years ago at the SXSW Film Festival. Described as a “darkly humorous, weird, and soulful fantasy that examines the inner demons in all of us”, the film is about a heartbroken man who attends a spiritual retreat, only to discover that the course releases more than toxins and traumatic experiences. Johnny Galecki (from “The Big Bang Theory”) stars, with a cast including Anna Friel, Oliver Platt, Kyle Gallner, and Anjelica Huston. I actually really like the concept of this – I’m curious to see how he deals with his ugly “inner demon” and cleans it up. Might be cool? Or maybe not after waiting two years for a release. I kept hearing about this one, and I can’t wait to see it. Upgrade a “thrilling and hyper violent vision of the future”, written & directed by Leigh Whannell, co-creator of Saw and Insidious. Set in the near-future, technology controls nearly all aspects of life. But when Grey, a self-identified technophobe, has his world turned upside down, his only hope for revenge is an experimental computer chip implant called Stem. Logan Marshall-Green stars, with a cast including Betty Gabriel, Michael M. Foster, Harrison Gilbertson, and Benedict Hardie. I’m so in for this, bring it on!
