First Trailer for Gabe Polsky's New Sports Doc 'In Search of Greatness'

    In Search of Greatness Trailer

“This is not the story of who, this is the story of why.” The first great trailer has debuted for a new sports documentary titled In Search of Greatness, described as a “groundbreaking” film about the true nature and nurture of the greatest athletes of all time. What makes these people so great, how do they become champions, is it in their blood or something else? In Search of Greatness is the next doc made by filmmaker Gabe Polsky, who made the fantastic hockey doc Red Army (which I still recommend). Polsky describes his intent here: “That the systems meant to cultivate us often stifle us instead, discouraging qualities that typically define those who leave a mark on the world: imagination, instinct and individuality. In a culture at risk of losing its soul to systems of all varieties, these ideas seem more vital than ever. How can a society so obsessed with success fail to understand its essence?” This looks very, very good – can’t wait to see it myself. ›››

  • Tate Ellington in First Trailer for Long Island-Set Comedy 'Wanderland'

Tate Ellington in First Trailer for Long Island-Set Comedy 'Wanderland'

    Wanderland Trailer

“Fate left you a footstep…” The Orchard has debuted the trailer for an indie comedy titled Wanderland, from director Josh Klausner, which premiered at the Hamptons Film Festival on Long Island last year. Wanderland stars Tate Ellington as Alex, a guy who decides to escape his life in New York City and ends up at a “Enchanted Cottage” on Long Island. There he “ends up lost on a surreal musical all-night odyssey of misadventures.” Whoa. The cast includes Tara Summers, Victoria Clark, Jack Dishel, Harris Yulin, Adepero Oduye, and Dree Hemingway. Klausner explained that the film is about “connection in the modern world — how we’re more technically linked to each other than ever before, but we’re in danger of losing the magic of direct, face to face human interaction, with all of its surprises and unknowns.” How fun. ›››

    Modern Life is Rubbish Trailer

“Where’s all this coming from?” Cleopatra has unveiled an official trailer for an indie romantic drama titled Modern Life is Rubbish, which played at the Edinburgh and Hawaii Film Festivals last year. The film is about a young couple on the verge of breaking-up. Brought together by their shared love of music, initially it was “opposites attract”, but this didn’t work for them long-term. Making the difficult decision to separate, they must split their prized music library. “But the sound track that defined their relationship keeps pulling them back together.” Aww. Modern Life is Rubbish stars Freya Mavor and Josh Whitehouse as Natalie and Liam, with a cast including Tom Riley, Ian Hart, and Jessie Cave. This seems like a very smart, emotionally devastating look at modern love – and how complex it is. I also quite like the poster – see below. ›››

  • Official Trailer for Elissa Down's Coming-of-Age Film 'The Honor List'

Official Trailer for Elissa Down's Coming-of-Age Film 'The Honor List'

    The Honor List Trailer

“This one isn’t just for Honor, it’s for you.” Lionsgate has debuted an official trailer for indie coming-of-age drama titled The Honor List, from Australian director Elissa Down (Pink Pyjamas, The Black Balloon). The Honor List is about four friends who, before high school, were besties, but by senior year they wouldn’t even speak to each other. When tragedy strikes, they bond over a list they have to complete together. It’s a bittersweet film that “explores the complexities of friendships, family, love, loss, and high school.” It’s also a film “made by women for women”, with over 60% of the crew being women. This stars Meghan Rienks, Karrueche Tran, Arden Cho, and Sasha Pieterse. It looks like a meaningful, empowering film for all. ›››

  • Rowan Atkinson in First Full Trailer for 'Johnny English Strikes Again'

Rowan Atkinson in First Full Trailer for 'Johnny English Strikes Again'

    Johnny English Strikes Again

“That was sooner than I expected.” Universal has revealed the first trailer for spy spoof comedy Johnny English Strikes Again, the third movie in the Johnny English series, returning after a seven year hiatus. Rowan Atkinson (who also plays Mr. Bean) is back again as Johnny English, the “man with few skills” and wacky, loser spy who helps save Britain, again. This time, a cyber-attack (yes, indeed) reveals the identity of all active undercover agents in Britain, and English is the only one who can help them get everything back in order. The cast in this includes Emma Thompson, Olga Kurylenko, Ben Miller, Jake Lacy, Adam James, and Miranda Hennessy. There’s always room in the cinemas for a new spy spoof, right? Or have we seen enough of these kind of comedies recently? Not sure if this will actually be any good, but why not. ›››

  • Review: John Krasinski's 'A Quiet Place' is a Fine Addition to the Horror Renaissance

Review: John Krasinski's 'A Quiet Place' is a Fine Addition to the Horror Renaissance

    A Quiet Place

There’s been something of a horror-sance (a horror renaissance) at work so far in 2018. Never mind the fact that a horror film (The Shape of Water) won Best Picture at the Oscars, and another horror film (Get Out) was a very strong candidate for the trophy. The genre output so far in 2018 has been stellar with filmmakers delivering effective chills and believable characters through quality storytelling. In a nutshell, it’s a good time to be a fan of horror cinema, and the good time continues with A Quiet Place. It has everything fans of the genre would want: likeable and well-written characters; decent pacing throughout; and, most importantly, an absolutely terrifying premise with equally scary moments. A Quiet Place is a monster movie that plays the sub-genre to a T, and shows once again there is still some art to be had in the horror genre. ›››

  • First Official Trailer for 'The First Purge' Prequel in the Horror Series

First Official Trailer for 'The First Purge' Prequel in the Horror Series

    The First Purge Trailer

“Witness how it all began.” Universal has unveiled the first official trailer for the next movie in the ongoing Purge horror series, this one titled The First Purge, a new prequel taking us back to the very first “Purge” experiment. “To push the crime rate below one percent for the rest of the year, the New Founding Fathers of America (NFFA) test a sociological theory that vents aggression for one night in one isolated community.” But, of course, it takes over the nation and eventually it becomes the annual event that the other movies show us. The First Purge stars Y’Lan Noel, Lex Scott Davis, Joivan Wade, Luna Lauren Velez, and Marisa Tomei. This is technically the fourth Purge movie, but like other horror series, they’re going back to tell the origin as a prequel instead of another sequel. Who’s still into these? Maybe this could be the best? ›››

  • First Trailer for Farhadi's 'Everybody Knows' Starring Bardem & Cruz

First Trailer for Farhadi's 'Everybody Knows' Starring Bardem & Cruz

    Everybody Knows Trailer

“Something happened last night.” It was announced today that the eighth feature film by Iranian filmmaker Asghar Farhadi, titled Everybody Knows, will be the opening night competition selection at the Cannes Film Festival this May. Following that announcement, this first trailer arrived for the film originally titled Todos lo saben in Spanish. Shot entirely in Spanish on the Iberian Peninsula, Everybody Knows is about a Spanish woman who returns to her hometown outside Madrid with her Argentinian husband and children. However, the trip is upset by unexpected events that bring secrets into the open. Real-life lovers Penélope Cruz and Javier Bardem star, with a cast that includes Ricardo Darin, Carla Campra, Inma Cuesta, and Barbara Lennie. As expected from Farhadi, this looks very good. Will be catching it in Cannes. Enjoy. ›››

  • Steve Coogan & Paul Rudd in Amusing Trailer for Comedy 'Ideal Home'

Steve Coogan & Paul Rudd in Amusing Trailer for Comedy 'Ideal Home'

    Ideal Home Trailer

“You have the biggest heart of any man I know.” An international trailer has debuted for the indie comedy Ideal Home, the latest feature made by Hamlet 2 (remember that one?) director Andrew Fleming. Ideal Home is both written and directed by Fleming, and is about a wealthy, bickering gay couple whose life is turned inside out when a ten-year old boy shows up at their door claiming to be Erasmus’ grandson. This is a familiar story, but the twist is the two dads aspect. Steve Coogan and Paul Rudd star as Erasmus and Paul, and the cast also includes Jake McDorman, Jesse Luken, Jack Gore, and Alison Pill. This looks surprisingly warm-hearted, not as overtly comedic as I was expecting from that description. Give it a watch. ›››

  • Very First Trailer for Terry Gilliam's 'The Man Who Killed Don Quixote'

Very First Trailer for Terry Gilliam's 'The Man Who Killed Don Quixote'

The Man Who Killed Don Quixote

“Blasphemy!” It’s finally, finally, finally, finally here!! Can you believe it?! The very first international trailer for Terry Gilliam’s The Man Who Killed Don Quixote has arrived out of nowhere, just a week before the Cannes Film Festival line-up announcement. Word is the film will play the festival, but until it’s official, this is our first look. Terry Gilliam has been trying to make The Man Who Killed Don Quixote for decades, (in)famously starting production and then shutting down once before in 2000 with Johnny Depp. Now he’s finally finished it and it’s ready for release this year. Rejoice! The film is about an advertising executive who jumps back & forth in time between 21st century London and 17th century La Mancha, where Don Quixote mistakes him for Sancho Panza. Starring Jonathan Pryce as Don Quixote, and Adam Driver as Toby, with a cast including Olga Kurylenko, Stellan Skarsgård, Rossy de Palma, Óscar Jaenada, Jordi Mollà, Jason Watkins, and Sergi López. This looks totally wild and crazy and fun, I’m so down for this. ›››
