First Trailer for 'A Leaf of Faith' Doc About a Natural Opioid Alternative

A Leaf of Faith Documentary Trailer

“What if I told you I had the cure for the opioid crisis in my hand?” The Orchard has released an official trailer for a (potentially controversial) medicinal health documentary titled A Leaf of Faith, the latest film from doc director Chris Bell (Bigger Stronger Faster, Trophy Kids, Prescription Thugs). Even though the title might make you think this doc is about medicinal marijuana, it’s actually about another kind of potent, powerful plant – one called “Kratom“. Grown in Southeast Asia, this plant is part of the coffee plant and is, supposedly, a safe and effective alternative to medicinal opioid painkillers. Why is this important? Because opioids are the leading cause of accidental death in the United States. Really. Which is a bit freaky, but it’s true. “Join Chris Bell as he explores the natural world of this never before known harmless leaf that could be the perfect human medicine, while providing answers to all his questions and no doubt test[ing] his faith.” ›››

Watch: Animated Short 'Life Cycles' About Breaking Out of Our Routine

    Life Cycles Short Film

“If we don’t act now…” Take a moment to watch this and think about your own life. This sobering animated short film is about how our daily and weekly routines are the same thing over and over (and over). And yet nothing changes? Only if we can change it ourselves. Life Cycles is a 4-minute animated short directed by Ross Hogg, that won the BAFTA Scotland award for Best Animation in 2017. This short is so effective at making us all see how mundane and repetitive everything in our lives is, and how important it is to shake up that routine. This idea started out as an animated diary, and it eventually became this film which hopefully connects with each viewer in its own way. And maybe, just maybe, it will get you to try something different. ›››

Trailer for Rock Doc 'Straight Into a Storm' About the Band Deer Tick

    Straight Into a Storm

“We’re not really an indie band anymore, now we’re like a cult band.” Abramorama has debuted an official trailer for a new rock documentary titled Straight Into a Storm, profiling the band known as Deer Tick, an American alternative rock band from Providence, Rhode Island. The film profiles their last 10 years and rise to fame, focusing around their 10th anniversary shows in 2014/2015, and including lots of old footage, too. “Our 10-year anniversary shows were a celebration for our fans and for us. It was a lot of work, but also a blast! William Miller was there every night to capture that spirit. We’re proud and excited for his film to get an official release and proper distribution by partnering with Abramorama.” This looks like another fun rock doc, profiling a band that has had its ups & downs, still continuing to rock on no matter what. Trevor Jackson in Full-Length Trailer for Director X's 'Superfly' Remake

    Superfly Trailer

“Welcome to Atlanta – we’ve got everything you could ever want.” Sony Pictures has debuted full-length official trailer for Superfly, following the first teaser trailer from a few months ago. This is a “remake” of the 1972 blaxploitation film Super Fly, about a cocaine dealer Priest who wants to score one more super deal and retire. This reimagining is from Director X (also known as Julien Christian Lutz), and stars Trevor Jackson (of “Grown-ish”, “Burning Sands”) as Youngblood Priest, this time operating in Atlanta. Superfly also stars Jason Mitchell, Michael Kenneth Williams, Lex Scott Davis, Andrea Londo, Jennifer Morrison, Rick Ross, Big Boi, and Big Bank Black. This is looking damn good, with some dope footage in the trailer. Michael Kenneth Williams looks awesome, and so does Trevor Jackson as Priest. Watch below. ›››

Terrible Trailer for Low Budget Sci-Fi Thriller 'Astro' Filmed in Roswell

    Astro Trailer

“What would you do if your child was from another galaxy?” File this under “Don’t Watch“, which means you’ll probably watch it any just to see how bad it is. An official trailer has debuted for an indie sci-fi feature titled Astro, and it looks terrible in every single way. The story is about some billionaire’s space exploration program bringing back an alien from another planet, or something like that. The film’s cast includes Gary Daniels, Marshal Hilton, Courtney Akbar, Max Wasa, Louis Mandylor, and Michael Paré. This trailer is a mess, the CGI is horrible, I don’t even know what’s going on. This site also describes it nicely: “A Bland Uninspired Sci-Fi Mess.” Brian Steele Medina of Gemini Syndrome, composed the music and sound FX for the trailer, which also features the unreleased track “We Are the Fallen” written by the alternative metal band. The original score is composed by Erick Schroeder. If you’re curious, well, you shouldn’t be. ›››

Watch: Superb Modern-Day Samurai Short Film 'Two Heavens As One'

Two Heavens As One Short Film

“Do not let your spirit be influenced by your body, or your body be influenced by your spirit.” A superb documentary short titled Two Heavens As One, or 二天一, has debuted online and it’s a must watch. This is the latest short film made by filmmaker Ryan Freeman, who also made the fantastic doc short Being Batman previously. The short introduces us to a “modern-day samurai” named Jason Nip, who is among the 12th generation of students to train in the ways of Miyamoto Musashi, a famous swordsmen and martial artist in Japanese history. Nip is also the Sensei of the only Dojo in North America to train and teach Hyoho Niten Ichi Ryu, the sword fighting style developed by Musashi using one short and one long sword. This has a beautiful score, excellent cinematography, and inspiring poetic simplicity in its storytelling. Watch below. ›››

    The Yellow Birds Trailer

“Promise me you’ll take care of him over there.” Saban Films has unveiled an official US trailer for an indie war drama titled The Yellow Birds, which first premiered at the Sundance Film Festival last year (not this year). This is the second film from director Alexandre Moors, who last made the acclaimed Blue Caprice. The film follows Brandon Bartle, played by Alden Ehrenreich, and the difficulties he faces in keeping his humanity, his urge to survive and his friend Murph, played by Tye Sheridan, alive during the war in Iraq, as well as his life and struggles with his memories of the war after he comes back to Virginia. The cast includes Jennifer Aniston, Toni Collette, Jason Patric, Jack Huston, Lee Tergesen, and Robert Pralgo. Yet another one of these Iraq war films about how bad it is. This looks intense and very emotional. ›››

  • Christina Ricci & John Cusack in Trailer for Action Thriller 'Distorted'

Christina Ricci & John Cusack in Trailer for Action Thriller 'Distorted'

    Distorted Trailer

“What are you experiencing?” Minds Eye has released an official trailer for indie action-thriller Distorted, the latest from director Rob W. King, who also made the very cheesy sci-fi film The Humanity Bureau with Nicolas Cage. This film stars Christina Ricci as a woman with biopolar disorder who moves into a “smart apartment” with her husband. But they soon suspect something is up, and realize that the owner is using the residents as unwitting guinea pigs for a “synthetic telepathy’” brainwashing plot. John Cusack co-stars, including Brendan Fletcher, Vicellous Shannon, Nicole Anthony, Oliver Rice, Gigi Jackman, and Maja Milkovich. This seems like it was a cool pitch at first, but the film itself looks boring and forgettable. ›››

  • New Official Trailer for 'Gotti' Starring John Travolta as the NY Mobster

New Official Trailer for 'Gotti' Starring John Travolta as the NY Mobster

    Gotti Movie Trailer

“You’ll need the support of all five boroughs.” Vertical Ent. has debuted a second official trailer for crime thriller Gotti, spanning three decades telling the story of legendary crime boss John Gotti Sr., as played by John Travolta. The story focuses on Gotti’s rise to power in New York, as well as his wife Victoria Gotti, played by Kelly Preston, along with his son John Gotti Jr., played by Spencer Lofranco. This film was slated as a last minute premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, which seems like an odd pick. It was originally set to open last December, but has been held until this June. The full cast includes Stacy Keach, Pruitt Taylor Vince, Megan Leonard, Lydia Hull, William DeMeo, Tyler Jon Olson, Leo Rossi, and Ella Bleu Travolta. This seems like a big film, and Travolta looks menacing, but I’m not excited at all to see it. ›››
