Chloe Moretz in New Netflix Trailer for Medical Drama 'Brain on Fire'

    Brain on Fire Trailer

“We’re going to get to the bottom of this together.” Netflix has released a new official trailer for a film titled Brain on Fire, which premiered at festivals in 2016 and has been awaiting release ever since. We actually posted a trailer for this in early 2017, expecting it to be out last year, but that never happened. Netflix is finally releasing the film this month, if anyone still wants to see it. The film stars Chloë Grace Moretz as a young woman who starts going mad after she begins to experience terrible seizures, and her life falls apart as a result. Based on the true story of Susannah Cahalan, who was lucky to find one doctor who finally gave her a diagnosis. The full cast includes Richard Armitage, Carrie-Anne Moss, Tyler Perry, Thomas Mann, Vincent Gale, Nicole LaPlaca, Agam Darshi, and Jenny Slate. This might be worth skipping. ›››

  • New Trailer for Prehistoric Thriller 'Alpha' About a Boy and His Wolf

New Trailer for Prehistoric Thriller 'Alpha' About a Boy and His Wolf

    Alpha Movie Trailer

“Leaders are born from survival.” Whoa. Sony has released a new trailer for the movie Alpha, which was originally set for release in March but then delayed until August this year. We featured the first trailer for this last year, almost a year ago, but the studio freaked. This new trailer is much different – selling it more as an uplifting tale like one of those fun nature documentaries. Very interesting pivot. This adventure follows the story of Zeta, played by Kodi Smit-McPhee, a young man injured on a bison hunt left for dead. He befriends a lone wolf and together they figure out how to survive. The full cast includes Natassia Malthe, Leonor Varela, Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson, Mercedes de la Zerda, and Jens Hultén. I can’t believe they’re actually trying to sell this as the story of the first dog, that’s some serious pandering. Oh well. ›››

  • Second Official Trailer for Illumination's 'Dr. Seuss' The Grinch' Movie

Second Official Trailer for Illumination's 'Dr. Seuss' The Grinch' Movie

    The Grinch Movie Trailer

“I’m going to steal their Christmas…!” Universal & Illumination have revealed the second official trailer for Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch, their new animated take on the classic Christmas story about the lovable green grump the Grinch. Benedict Cumberbatch voices the Grinch. No other voice cast members have been revealed yet, Cumberbatch is still the only one listed. “The Grinch tells the story of a cynical grump who goes on a mission to steal Christmas, only to have his heart changed by a young girl’s generous holiday spirit. Funny, heartwarming and visually stunning, it’s a universal story about the spirit of Christmas and the indomitable power of optimism.” This looks like another cash grab retelling of the classic holiday story, with some of Illumination’s usual animated quirks. It looks amusing, but not as good as the original cartoon. ›››

Adorable Official Trailer for Guide Dog Documentary 'Pick of the Litter'

    Pick of the Litter Trailer

“The dogs that we’re considering are really the best of the best.” IFC Films has debuted a new official US trailer for the documentary Pick of the Litter, a film that follows puppies as they grow up and are trained to become Guide Dogs. This premiered at the Slamdance Film Festival earlier this year, which is when we posted the original trailer in January. “Cameras follow these pups through an intense two-year odyssey as they train to become dogs whose ultimate responsibility is to protect their blind partners from harm. Along the way, these remarkable animals rely on a community of dedicated individuals who train them to do amazing, life-changing things in the service of their human.” Oh my goodness, as a dog lover I can’t wait to see this. This looks like more than just a cute doc, about how hard it is to find the right dog for this tough job. ›››

  • New US Trailer for Drama 'The Children Act' Starring Emma Thompson

New US Trailer for Drama 'The Children Act' Starring Emma Thompson

    The Children Act

“So you’ve come to change my mind, My Lady?” A24 has debuted a new official US trailer for a court drama titled The Children Act, which premiered at the Toronto Film Festival last year. We posted the UK trailer for this a few weeks ago, now there’s a new US trailer for another look. The film’s title is a reference to a particular law in England: “When a court determines any question with respect to the upbringing of a child, the child’s welfare shall be the court’s paramount consideration.” It stars Emma Thompson as an eminent high court judge, who is asked to rule on the case of Adam, a brilliant young boy who is refusing a life-saving blood transfusion on religious grounds. It’s a complex dilemma especially for a judge to rule over. The film’s cast includes Fionn Whitehead, Stanley Tucci, Ben Chaplin, Jason Watkins, Rosie Cavaliero, and Nikki Amuka-Bird. This looks very dramatic and emotional, certainly worth a watch for Thompson alone. ›››

  • Zombie Apocalypse Hits Paris in Trailer for 'The Night Eats The World'

Zombie Apocalypse Hits Paris in Trailer for 'The Night Eats The World'

    The Night Eats The World

“You probably thought you’d drop dead peacefully in your sleep… And then, this happens?” More zombies! An official UK trailer has debuted for a new French zombie film titled The Night Eats The World, from first-time director Dominique Rocher. The plot involves a man who ends up at a party at his ex-girlfriend’s place, only to wake up and discover he’s alone and the rest of the people in Paris have turned into zombies. He has somehow survived unharmed overnight, and now must figure out how to survive and what to do next. Not the most original zombie plot, but this film does look pretty cool. Anders Danielsen Lie stars, along with Golshifteh Farahani, Denis Lavant, Sigrid Bouaziz, and David Kammenos. This doesn’t look as scary as it does wild and entertaining, which makes me want to watch it more. Always more zombies. ›››

Watch: Amusing Animated Superhero Short 'Rebooted' About Owl Guy

    Rebooted Short Film

“All these camera moves are really scrambling my eggs!” Pow! Zam! Boom! In honor of the Annecy Film Festival for animation this week, I’m featuring a few animated short films that are worth watching. Next up is a fun one titled Rebooted, a 3D animated short film made by Sagar Arun and Rachel Kral from Ringling College of Art and Design. The concept of this involves a retro comic book superhero being introduced to the gritty, dark “rebooted” version of himself. It’s an amusing riff on Batman and all the current DC superhero movies with dark, brooding characters. It’s not the best short ever, but it’s a very clever idea executed well. ›››

  • New US Trailer for 'Gauguin: Voyage to Tahiti' Starring Vincent Cassel

New US Trailer for 'Gauguin: Voyage to Tahiti' Starring Vincent Cassel

    Gauguin: Voyage to Tahiti Trailer

“I feel alive again.” Cohen Media Group has released an official US trailer for the film Gauguin: Voyage to Tahiti, originally known as just Gauguin in its released in Europe last year. The film is finally hitting limited US theaters this summer. Gauguin: Voyage to Tahiti stars Vincent Cassel as famous French artist Paul Gauguin, a painter who decided to leave behind his wife and child and civilized life to travel out to Tahiti in 1891. The film is about his decision to go to Tahiti and his romance and connection with a young Tahitian girl named Tehura, played by Tuheï Adams. The cast includes Malik Zidi, Pua-Taï Hikutini, Pernille Bergendorff, Marc Barbé, Paul Jeanson, Cédric Eeckhout, and Samuel Jouy. This looks quite good, with a compelling performance by Cassel as the inspired painter. I would really like to see this. ›››

Teaser Trailer for Disney's Live-Action 'Dumbo' Movie from Tim Burton

    Dumbo Movie Teaser

“We’re all family here, no matter how small.” Disney has dropped a stunning first teaser trailer for the live-action Dumbo movie, about the elephant that can fly. Did you forget they were making this? Well, surprise! Here it is! Dumbo is directed by iconic filmmaker Tim Burton, who has been working with Disney ever since Alice in Wonderland and most recently made Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children. This new Disney Dumbo adventure features an exciting ensemble cast: Danny DeVito, Eva Green, Colin Farrell, Nico Parker, Finley Hobbins, Alan Arkin, Joseph Gatt, Sandy Martin, with Michael Keaton as the evil entrepreneur villain. Clearly the elephant is all CGI, but the rest of this looks quite good – though it reminds me of the circus scenes from Burton’s Big Fish more than anything else. This first teaser is really wonderful, you might be surprised by how moving this is. Looking forward to seeing more from this. Enjoy. ›››

Annecy 2018: 'Chuck Steel: Night of the Trampires' is Absurdly Superb

Chuck Steel: Night of the Trampires

It’s not often that someone makes an R-rated animated movie. And when one does get made, they’re usually not too good, either over-the-top or just nasty. Every once in a while, one comes along that totally blows the the lid off of everything and becomes a huge hit, shaking things up and proving there’s an audience for this. Chuck Steel: Night of the Trampires, directed by Michael Mort and made by an independent stop-motion studio in Wales called Animortal, is one of these insane movies that is sure to become an instant cult classic. We really haven’t seen an all-out, R-rated animated movie packed with this much absurdity and ridiculous humor since Team America: World Police (in 2004!). Get ready for this one. Scratch that, there’s nothing you can do to prepare yourself – except maybe watching Big Trouble in Little China on VHS before. ›››
