    Breaking A Monster Doc Trailer

“They’re relating to everything in LA because of Grand Theft Auto!” Abramorama has debuted a trailer for the documentary Breaking A Monster, which profiles the heavy metal / punk rock band Unlocking the Truth. The story begins profiling them when they’re in 7th grade, following this three-man band as they play shows to big crowds on the streets of New York City, eventually landing a major record deal along with gigs opening for Metallica. The band features Malcolm Brickhouse on vocals & guitar, Alec Atkins on bass, and Jarad Dawkins on drums. • Why Disney Should Let 'Rogue One' Rebel Against Star Wars Formula

Why Disney Should Let 'Rogue One' Rebel Against Star Wars Formula

    Rogue One

“This is a rebellion, isn’t it? I rebel.” Who would have thought that line, spoken by actress Felicity Jones’ character Jyn Erso in the Rogue One teaser trailer, would have such great significance for the actual film itself? According to several unconfirmed sources, Rogue One might’ve rebelled a tad too much. That’s the story that has been sweeping the internet this week with major rumors that the first film in the Star Wars Anthology series, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, will undergo significant reshoots after initial internal test screenings at Disney apparently failed to impress senior executives. Let’s examine why I think that might not bode well for the spin-off and why the film should rebel against the famous Star Wars formula. ›››

  • Official US Teaser Trailer for Animated Film 'Phantom Boy' Set in NYC

Official US Teaser Trailer for Animated Film 'Phantom Boy' Set in NYC

    Phantom Boy Teaser Trailer

“Terror in the city!” GKids has debuted an enjoyable teaser trailer for the animated film Phantom Boy, the latest from French filmmakers Jean-Loup Felicioli & Alain Gagnol, who previously made the Oscar-nominated animated film A Cat in Paris. Inspired by the classic gangster stories of the 40’s and 50’s, this film is about an 11-year-old hospitalized boy who has the ability to leave his physical body and float around the city. This teaser is more of an introduction, and I’m sure the next trailer will get into more of the actual story. The film features the voices of Edouard Baer, Jean-Pierre Marielle and Audrey Tautou. This actually looks damn good, charming but also an edge to it with the gangster story. Looking forward to this. ›››

Watch: Trailer for 'Norman Lear: Just Another Version of You' Doc

Norman Lear: Just Another Version of You

“I was concerned about what I was seeing on TV – mixing politics and religion.” Music Box has debuted a trailer for the documentary Norman Lear: Just Another Version of You, which profiles the life and work of legendary TV producer Norman Lear. From documentary filmmakers Heidi Ewing & Rachel Grady, this premiered at the Sundance Film Festival to mostly positive buzz. I wrote in my review from the fest: “Not only is Norman Lear: Just Another Version of You a fascinating look at the ‘history of TV’, in a sense, but it’s also a remarkably eye-opening examination of how to be yourself, find happiness, and strive on even with so much opposition or absurdity all around.” Even if you don’t know much about Lear, it’s enjoyable. ›››

  • Why Online Film Criticism and Audiences Are Growing Further Apart

Why Online Film Criticism and Audiences Are Growing Further Apart

    Roger Ebert

“Is film criticism still relevant?” That is a question I have been hearing a lot lately. Conversely, I think the more important question is, “Is film criticism relevant to you?” In the interest of full disclosure, it should be noted that I don’t consider myself to be a film critic. I don’t have a journalism degree. However, I don’t hate film criticism. As a matter of fact, some of my favorite writers are critics. I grew up reading the reviews of Roger Ebert, Michael Phillips and A.O. Scott. When I was younger, I wanted to grow up and become a critic. As an adult, it feels like that dream has changed and the significance of film criticism isn’t quite what it was. As of late, I have noticed a strange disparity among casual moviegoers and online film criticism when it comes to some major films this past year. This isn’t some new trend that only started in 2016 (see this article or this one); it is something I believe has been happening for some time. If the rocky relationship between critics and audiences is a marriage, I think it’s safe to say some audiences have filed for divorce. ›››

  • Official Trailer for WWII Action Film 'Chosen' Featuring Harvey Keitel

Official Trailer for WWII Action Film 'Chosen' Featuring Harvey Keitel

    Chosen Trailer

“An ordinary man, but the circumstances were extraordinary…” Lionsgate has released a new trailer for the WWII action film Chosen, from director Jasmin Dizdar, starring legendary actor Harvey Keitel as an unassuming Hungarian lawyer who ends up leading an anti-Nazi resistance during the war. English actor Luke Mably plays the “young” version of Keitel seen in flashbacks during the war. There is quite a bit of action in this, which is probably the main selling point, but I’m curious how much takes place in the present and how much really takes place in the past (during the war). Also starring Ana Ularu. Even though this is direct-to-DVD, if you’re a fan of WWII films it’s worth checking out. Not sure if it’s any good, might be solid. ›››

Latest Trailer Hong-jin Na's New Korean Horror Thriller 'The Wailing'

    The Wailing Trailer

“You better brace yourself.” Well Go USA has released a final trailer and a new poster for the release of Hong-jin Na’s The Wailing, a Korean horror thriller from the same guy who made The Chaser (a fantastic film) and The Yellow Sea previously. This new film is apparently over six years in the making and broke box office records in Korea. It’s about an aloof police investigator who investigates a weird murder in a small village and uncovers a creepy ghost story. There’s more to it than that, but you have to see it to find out. The cast includes Hwang Jung-Min, Chun Woo-Hee, Kwak Do-Woni, and Jun Kunimura. I recently had the chance to see this and it’s pretty damn good, the cinematography in particular is stunning. Have a look. ›››

Must Watch: First Trailer for Crazy Live-Action 'Monster Trucks' Movie

    Monster Trucks Movie Trailer

“Aren’t you curious about where it came from?” Paramount has unleashed the first fun trailer for the crazy live-action Monster Trucks movie, directed by Chris Wedge, who worked on Ice Age and Robots before making this leap into live-action. The concept is kind of a mash-up between Transformers and Cars, with “monster trucks” that come to life as monsters, which seem to look like sharks. The ensemble cast includes Lucas Till, Jane Levy, Holt McCallany, Barry Pepper, Tucker Albrizzi, Danny Glover, Amy Ryan, Rob Lowe, Frank Whaley, and Thomas Lennon. This looks surprisingly kind of awesome, I’m actually excited to check it out now. As wacky as it seems, there’s an edge to it that makes it quite appealing. ›››

  • Bruce Willis Stars in Bank Heist Thriller 'Marauders' Official Trailer

Bruce Willis Stars in Bank Heist Thriller 'Marauders' Official Trailer

    Marauders Trailer

“Safety deposit boxes are were people keep their dirt.” Lionsgate Premiere has debuted a trailer for a new bank heist thriller called Marauders, which once again takes inspiration from Heat and features men in masks robbing banks (like so many other thrillers recently). Bruce Willis stars as the owner of the bank, with a group of FBI agents thinking he’s the mastermind behind it. The cast also includes Christopher Meloni, Dave Bautista and Adrian Grenier, with Lydia Hull and Tyler Jon Olson. This looks okay, with some wimpy action and cheesy dialogue. But I’m intrigued to find out what’s going on. Anyone else? ›››

Watch: New Trailer for Werner Herzog's Internet Doc 'Lo and Behold'

    Herzog's Lo and Behold Trailer

“The explosion of information technology on the internet has lead to some of its greatest glories.” Magnolia has released an official US trailer for the new Werner Herzog documentary Lo and Behold: Reveries of The Connected World, in which Herzog profiles the internet and how it has changed the world, for better or worse. The doc premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year to mostly positive reviews. We featured the first two trailers a few months ago while waiting for release info to be revealed. The doc has 10 distinct chapters, from “The Early Days” to “The Future”, and explores both the good and bad of what the internet has provided. I’m still quite excited to see this doc, anything by Herzog is usually quite fascinating. ›››
