Review: 'Independence Day: Resurgence' a Dull Film 20 Years in the Making

    Independence Day: Resurgence Review

20 years to prepare. 20 years of anticipation. That’s where we’re starting at in 2016 with Independence Day: Resurgence, the long-awaited follow-up to the massive sci-fi hit released in 1996. Though film technology has advanced as much as the defense technology found within the movie, it’s no substitute for fast-paced entertainment and human emotion. You know, the stuff that made Independence Day such a crowd-pleasing success back then. Instead we’re left with overblown effects and seemingly bored actors delivering dull, meaningless dialogue. Independence Day: Resurgence isn’t the worst blockbuster sequel to come down the road, but its mildly amped pace and predictability in story leaves even the most die hard of fans of the original squirming for something more. Maybe they’ll get it right in another 20 years. ›››

Must Watch: Full Trailer for Mysterious New Sci-Fi Thriller 'Morgan'

    Morgan Sci-Fi Trailer

“You’ll see now how happy we can be.” Fox has posted the new full-length theatrical trailer online for Luke Scott’s upcoming thriller Morgan, which was originally playing in front of Independence Day: Resurgence over the weekend. It’s a sci-fi film about a “human” that is captured after an incident, though it has some very horrific aspects to it, too. Kate Mara stars and the description on IMDb reveals that she is called in to “determine whether or not to terminate an artificial being’s life that was made in a laboratory environment.” The full cast also includes Anya Taylor-Joy, Toby Jones, Rose Leslie, Boyd Holbrook, Michelle Yeoh, Jennifer Jason Leigh, and Paul Giamatti. This first teaser didn’t reveal that much, but this one sheds some light on what’s going on and it looks pretty cool. I’m definitely intrigued and will be seeing this. ›››

Watch: New Trailer for Acclaimed Original Horror Movie 'Lights Out'

    Lights Out Trailer

“Everyone is afraid of the dark, and that’s what she feeds on.” Warner Bros has debuted the second official trailer for David F. Sandberg’s Lights Out, a new horror thriller that received some rave reviews after premiering at the Los Angeles Film Festival. Based on Sandberg’s short film, the film is about a malevolent ghost that only appears when the lights go out, which seems like a simple concept but it’s done so effectively it makes this horror completely original and very, very scary. Teresa Palmer stars, along with Gabriel Bateman, Alexander DiPersia, Billy Burke and Maria Bello. There are a few creepy moments in this trailer, but the best scenes are being kept for the full movie. Which is a smart move. Don’t watch in the dark. ›››

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

“When you’re shooting Stormtroopers in paradise, you have the best job in the world, you know? You can’t really deny it at that point.” Entertainment Weekly has posted a first look gallery of photos from Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, to compliment the teaser trailer for the upcoming Star Wars spin-off. There are some good new shots of a bunch of the characters, played by actors Felicity Jones, Forest Whitaker, Donnie Yen, Diego Luna, and Ben Mendelsohn. Plus there’s a good look at one of the new droids. And we finally get to meet Riz Ahmed’s character – the Rebel squad’s lead pilot, Bodhi Rook. “He he tends to be a little tense, a little volatile, but everybody in the group really relies on his technical skills,” Kathleen Kennedy says. There’s also some great shots of Stormtroopers, including the new black commando troopers. ›››

  • Review: Nicolas Winding Refn's Uncompromising, Hypnotic 'The Neon Demon'

Review: Nicolas Winding Refn's Uncompromising, Hypnotic 'The Neon Demon'

    The Neon Demon Review

Nicolas Winding Refn creates iconic characters, individuals who, despite the madness in which they’re usually swept up, have a mythological aura that clings to them like a bur. His latest, The Neon Demon, follows suit. The protagonist is a young woman trying to break into the cutthroat world of modeling. Though Refn instills in her the same, memorable qualities he has used to grow many characters before, the harsh world and sadistic players he builds become more so. The Neon Demon is a wicked, bloody, fairy tale that could only be delivered by Refn. Uncompromising in tone, pace, and outcome, it may be his most divisive film yet. That doesn’t stop The Neon Demon from being a brutally honest look at the fashion world and the shallowness that goes with it that slowly builds to a violent finale. In other words: it’s pitch-perfect Refn. ›››

  • First Trailer for Ewan McGregor's Directorial Debut 'American Pastoral'

First Trailer for Ewan McGregor's Directorial Debut 'American Pastoral'

    American Pastoral Trailer

“Where is she?” Lionsgate has released the first trailer for the directional debut of actor Ewan McGregor, an adaption of the Philip Roth novel American Pastoral, about a family in the 1960s that falls apart when their daughter disappears after being accused of committing a violent act. This is actually the second film this year based on a Philip Roth story, the other being the excellent film Indignation which first premiered at Sundance. McGregor stars in this, with Dakota Fanning, Jennifer Connelly, Uzo Aduba, Molly Parker, Rupert Evans, Valorie Curry and David Strathairn. This looks like a very strong directorial debut from McGregor, and I’m quite curious to see it. I like the music and the way the story reveals itself. ›››

  • First Full Trailer for Board Game Horror Prequel 'Ouija: Origin of Evil'

First Full Trailer for Board Game Horror Prequel 'Ouija: Origin of Evil'

    Ouija: Origin of Evil Trailer

It was never just a game. Universal has unveiled a trailer for the upcoming horror prequel Ouija: Origin of Evil, the follow-up to the Ouija movie from 2014. Did anyone even want a sequel to the first one? The film has quite a cast: Henry Thomas, Elizabeth Reaser, Doug Jones, Parker Mack, Sam Anderson, Kate Siegel, Annalise Basso, and Lulu Wilson. The plot for this one involves a young daughter of a family being taken over by a malevolent spirit, and things get increasingly freaky from there. I can’t help but say this looks fairly generic, with some bland scares and the usual horror tropes, nothing unique. Oh well. ›››

Watch: Jason Statham is Back in First 'Mechanic: Resurrection' Trailer

    Mechanic: Resurrection Trailer

“I’ve been waiting too long to get even with you.” Lionsgate has released the first full-length trailer for this summer’s Mechanic: Resurrection, the sequel to The Mechanic from 2011, arriving in theaters in two months. This film stars Jason Statham in his 10,000th action film, as an assassin who makes his hits look like accidents. Aside from Statham, the cast includes Jessica Alba, Tommy Lee Jones, and Michelle Yeoh – impressive names for just another action movie. You thought he wouldn’t return to this series, but he’s back. The Mechanic is forced to travel the globe to complete three impossible assassinations, and do what he does best, make them all look like accidents. Well at least Tommy Lee Jones looks cool. Have a look. ›››

  • 'A New Hero' Featurette for 'Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them'

'A New Hero' Featurette for 'Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them'

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them Featurette

WB continues to introduce audiences to the cinematic world of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them with featurettes focusing on new characters in the Harry Potter universe. Eddie Redmayne stars as Newt Scamander, a magizoologist who winds up letting loose a suitcase full of magical creatures in New York City in the 20s. It looks like they’re still finishing the FX, so most of the footage involves characters interacting. There’s some brand new shots we haven’t seen before, and plenty of discussion from author J.K. Rowling, who was much more involved in the making of this than she was Harry Potter. The full cast includes Katherine Waterston, Alison Sudol, Dan Fogler, Colin Farrell and others. They’re doing a good job building up interest in this, as I’m getting more and more curious with each new video they release. ›››
