    Indiana Jones Animated Short Film

“Thrills! Chills! Adventure!” It’s here! It’s finally here! You may have heard buzz, or seen images, from this amazing animated Indiana Jones film that has been in the works for a while from Dutch animator Patrick Schoenmaker. Titled The Adventures of Indiana Jones, this brief “short film” is designed to be an introduction to an Indy animated series (that Patrick hopes to one day create). For now it’s just a wonderful 90-second adventure with Indy and Short Round and all his old friends, and it’s so much fun. The animation in particular is impressive, and Patrick says it took him a long time to replicate the look of Harrison Ford as Indy. This plays more like the opening intro to the series, instead of one complete story, but I still enjoy it, covering many of his past moments. Here’s hoping this inspires more fan-made Indiana Jones adventures. ›››

Second Trailer for Beatty's 'Rules Don't Apply' with Alden Ehrenreich

    Rules Don't Apply

“You’re not like other people, you’re an exception.” Fox has released the second trailer for Warren Beatty’s new film Rules Don’t Apply, a romantic drama set in Hollywood in the 50s. Beatty directs and also stars in this as Howard Hughes, who contracts a young actress – played by Lily Collins – to work for him in Los Angeles. She meets her personal driver played by Alden Ehrenreich (who is playing a young Han Solo in the Star Wars spin-off) and falls for him, but can’t break the rule of having a relationship with an employee. The full cast includes Haley Bennett, Alec Baldwin, Ed Harris, Matthew Broderick, Martin Sheen, Annette Bening, Oliver Platt and Steve Coogan. This looks fun and quirky, but it doesn’t look like it’s going to win over anyone. Some of the scenes still seem a bit dry, but maybe it’s just me. Take a look below. ›››

Fantastic Fest Review: The Mo Brothers' Insane and Badass 'Headshot'

    Headshot Review

The Mo Brothers from Indonesia always deliver. Whether it’s a disturbing slasher movie like Macabre or an intense thriller such as Killers, the directing team comprised of Kimo Stamboel and Timo Tjahjanto have become a force for genre filmmaking. Their latest film, Headshot, is no exception. A balls-to-the-wall actioner with plenty of insane choreography and even crazier effects on the execution, the film proves once again that, when it comes to daring works of cinema that keeps your nerves firmly in grip and your thirst for excitement quenched, this is a filmmaking team worthy of your attention. It helps that the presence of star Iko Uwais reminds you of The Raid, as well, as the action found within is every bit as intense and ›››

    Gimme Danger Doc Trailer

Time to rock out with Iggy! Magnolia Pictures has unveiled a trailer for the documentary Gimme Danger, about the rock band The Stooges, directed by legendary filmmaker Jim Jarmusch. This is the other big film that Jarmusch brought to the Cannes Film Festival this year – he premiered two, the other one being the fictional feature Paterson (one of my favorite films this year). Gimme Danger is a feature doc telling the story of The Stooges, a rock band from Michigan featuring Iggy Pop as the vocalist that launched with a concert in 1976. The doc tells a very extensive history of the band and features a bit of concert footage, as well as interviews and more. Cannes reviews state it’s “an exciting testament to the survival power of the Stooges’ music, reviled or ignored in its time, then rediscovered by the late 70s punk generation, and now widely celebrated as the work of – as Jarmusch claims at the start – ‘he greatest rock and roll band ever.’” ›››

  • Official Trailer for Indie Film 'Slash' About Fan Fiction Becoming Real

Official Trailer for Indie Film 'Slash' About Fan Fiction Becoming Real

    Slash Trailer

“You write sex like a 12-year-old, and I think you know it. Have you ever even had sex?” Gravitas Ventures has released a trailer for an indie film called Slash, derived from the term “slash fiction” about a couple of gamer geeks who are in for an emotional thrill when their own fan fiction (aka “fan fic”) becomes real life. This is actually a goofy, funky coming-of-age story about two youngsters who fall for each other over this “fan fic”. The film stars Michael Johnston, Hannah Marks, Violett Beane, and Michael Ian Black. There’s a few awkward scenes of them actually reading the erotic fan fic, and the rest of it is pretty cheesy. Not sure if this will be any good unless you are really into the nerdy fan fic scene, but have a look anyway. ›››

Watch: Fourth Trailer for 'Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them'

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them Trailer

“We’ve lived in the shadows for too long. I ask all of you – who does this protect: us, or them?” WB has debuted a fourth trailer for the new Harry Potter spin-off, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, directed by David Yates from a script written by J.K. Rowling herself. We’ve seen a number of impressive trailers so far, but another one can’t hurt. Eddie Redmayne stars as Mr. Scamander, a magizoologist who comes to New York and accidentally lets loose a suitcase full of magical creatures. Also starring Katherine Waterston, Alison Sudol, Dan Fogler, Ezra Miller, Colin Farrell, Ron Perlman, Jon Voight, and Samantha Morton. This fourth and final trailer finally shows off many of the various (CG) creatures, and it looks like an entertaining adventure around New York. I’m actually pretty damn excited to see this soon. ›››

First Trailer for Leonardo DiCaprio's Documentary 'Before the Flood'

    Before the Flood Trailer

“We’ve known about this for decades… Paradise that has been degraded and destroyed. We’re knowingly doing this. I just want to know how far we’ve gone, and if there’s anything we can do to stop it.” National Geographic has unveiled the first official trailer for the environmental documentary Before the Flood, produced by and starring Leonardo DiCaprio, directed by Fisher Stevens. A staunch environmentalist and activist, DiCaprio travels the world conducting interviews, meeting with heads of state, and exploring the various lands of the world to address the global crisis of climate change. The doc presents a look at how climate change affects our environment and what society can do prevent the demise of endangered species, ecosystems and native communities across the planet. We’ve seen many, many climate docs recently, but I hope one of these really grabs people and wakes them up, because we all need to change – and change now. ›››

New Trailer for Jonás Cuarón's Film 'Desierto' with Gael García Bernal

    Desierto Trailer

“Welcome to the land of the free.” STX Entertainment has debuted the second trailer for the film Desierto, directed by Alfonso Cuarón’s son Jonás Cuarón. The thriller set on the US-Mexican border features Gael García Bernal as a man trying to make it back safely his family in the US. Jeffrey Dean Morgan stars as an angry American vigilante with a gun and a dog who hates those trying to cross illegally. We already ran a trailer last year and a review of this film from the London Film Festival, saying it “builds the tension and drama with great care and precision, never lulling or feeling over-long.” The film is a bit dry but has great performances by both Bernal & Morgan, and is another poignant reminder about the troubles on the border. ›››

  • Fantastic Fest Review: M. Night Shyamalan's Madhouse Horror 'Split'

Fantastic Fest Review: M. Night Shyamalan's Madhouse Horror 'Split'

    M. Night Shyamalan's Split

Split is filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan’s most terrifying film to date. Granted this opinion is coming from someone who finds The Sixth Sense, while a phenomenal film with a wonderfully choreographed twist, not all that scary, and, though Signs and The Village deliver the thrills, there’s nothing on par with Split in terms of how relentless in intensity and so very chilling it is. Shyamalan used to be considered a master of these types of genre films. Although his work has been less than stellar in recent years, the director’s filmmaking and storytelling prowess seem to be back in line. Split is his return, and, with a wonderfully creepy turn by James McAvoy in the lead role, Shyamalan’s latest ends up being his absolute best horror film to date. And, holy shit, what an ending, but we’ll get to that momentarily. ›››
