Fantastic Fest Review: Villeneuve's Beautiful, Overwhelming 'Arrival'

    Arrival Fantastic Fest Review

We can stop making science fiction films now. Arrival has said it all. Yes, there’s a very healthy dose of hyperbole with that statement, but that doesn’t make the overwhelming feeling the film conveys, directed by Denis Villeneuve and written by Eric Heisserer, any less resonant. Arrival is smart, simple sci-fi that never panders and never overstays its welcome, and, with Amy Adams on board to be our guide through the waterworks that are sure to come, it’s one of the best science fiction films to come around in years and one worthy of the processing required. Emotional and daring in the most exquisite of ways, Arrival becomes that eye-opening tale of alien encounters and communicative sparring that leaves the viewer rattling the ramifications that follow around in their head for days, a key staple for any, good science fiction. ›››

Rogue One: A Pixar Story Trailer

“A major weapons test is eminent – we need to know how to destroy it…” Time for something a little fun to end the week. Mashup creator “Darth Blender” has released a video titled Rogue One: A Pixar Story, which combines footage from different Pixar movies. Playing off of the upcoming Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, various characters from Pixar movies come together to capture Dr. Porkchop’s spaceship. As cheesy as this sounds, it’s actually an enjoyable mashup of characters and clips, mixing up the right moments from different movies to make this feel like a single movie worth watching. This also makes me want to rewatch Pixar’s Brave again, which I haven’t seen since release and it seems to be better than I remember. Have fun. ›››

Fantastic Fest Review: Park Chan-wook's Stunning 'The Handmaiden'

    The Handmaiden

Park Chan-wook once again plays outside the proverbial box with The Handmaiden, another stunning epic from the South Korean filmmaker whose name has become synonymous with breathtaking cinema. Chan-wook has become one of those few storytellers whose every work is an event, a film you simply have to see for yourself to take in all the wonder and beauty that comes with it. His latest is just as subversive, blending an efficient, con artist story with an abundance of strange sex, horror atmosphere, ultra-feminism, and, yes, even love. The Handmaiden quickly proves itself as yet another glorious masterpiece of visual style and effective narrative that eats away at your brain long after the final curtain has been raised. ›››

  • Trailer for 'Tower' Texas Sniper Doc Featuring Rotoscoped Footage

Trailer for 'Tower' Texas Sniper Doc Featuring Rotoscoped Footage

    Texas Documentary

“Everybody was in a state of panic. It was just chaos.” Kino Lorber has released a trailer for a documentary titled Tower, retelling the story of the Texas Tower Sniper who killed 16 people and wounded 32 others in 1966. Described as a “hybrid of animation, interviews, and recreations”, the film features rotoscoped footage (think Waking Life or A Scanner Darkly) that recreates some of the moments during the shooting. There’s also interviews and other footage that has been rotoscoped, making this a bit more unique and different than just another documentary about a tragic event (shooting) in American history. This seems like it might be interesting to see, since we all know the story but there’s a completely different feel to this. Take a look. ›››

  • Official Trailer for Indie 'Blue Jay' with Sarah Paulson & Mark Duplass

Official Trailer for Indie 'Blue Jay' with Sarah Paulson & Mark Duplass

    Blue Jay Trailer

“It’s almost like I don’t know who that person was…” “I remember her really well.” This seems quite charming. The Orchard has debuted a trailer for an indie drama titled Blue Jay, a black & white feature about two old friends from high school who randomly reconnect years later. The screenplay is written by Mark Duplass, who stars in this along with Emmy winner Sarah Paulson. These two used to be high school sweethearts but haven’t seen each other in nearly 20 years. This seems like the perfect little festival film that makes you think about life and your own choices and what it means to grow up. We’ve seen these kind of stories before, but as long as there’s honesty to them I enjoy them. I’m looking forward to this film. ›››

First Trailer for Unsettling Indie Horror Film 'The Eyes of My Mother'

The Eyes of My Mother Trailer

“I remember I was fascinated by how an inside of the body looked. She always hoped I would be a surgeon one day.” Magnolia has released a trailer for the indie horror titled The Eyes of My Mother, which first premiered at the Sundance Film Festival this year. Diana Agostini plays “Mother” in this creepy horror thriller about a mother who teaches her daughter to be “unfazed by death” – who turns out to be rather freaky as a grown up. The film has been described as a nightmare that is so unsettling and disturbing that many who’ve seen it want to forget it but can’t. It stays in your mind and will haunt you for days, weeks, even months after seeing it. The film stars Kika Magalhães, Will Brill, Flora Diaz, Paul Nazak, Clara Wong, and Olivia Bond. You can get a sense of the gruesomeness and bleakness of the film in this trailer. ›››

  • Fassbender & Gleeson in Crime Drama 'Trespass Against Us' Trailer

Fassbender & Gleeson in Crime Drama 'Trespass Against Us' Trailer

    Trespass Against Us Trailer

Blood is a brutal bond. A24 has unveiled a trailer for an indie crime drama from England titled Trespass Against Us, which just premiered at the Toronto Film Festival earlier this month. The film stars Michael Fassbender as a man trying desperately to escape the dangerous criminal world presided over by his savage father, played by Brendan Gleeson. The cast includes Rory Kinnear, Sean Harris, Lyndsey Marshal, Killian Scott and Georgie Smith. Not only does this look like a solid crime thriller with plenty to offer in terms of action and drama, but it also has an “astonishing” score by The Chemical Brothers to top it off. Gleeson, Fassbender and The Chemical Brothers pretty much has me sold no matter what. The car chases look like they might be the best part, but I’m definitely interested in seeing this anyway. Fire this up. ›››

  • Five Mysterious Teasers Introduce Johansson in 'Ghost in the Shell'

Five Mysterious Teasers Introduce Johansson in 'Ghost in the Shell'

    Ghost in the Shell Teasers

“What are you?” Paramount has debuted a series of mysterious 15-second teasers for the upcoming Ghost in the Shell live-action movie, starring Scarlett Johansson as The Major. Each teaser has a tiny snippet of footage and provides a very interesting introduction to this movie. Three of them feature Johansson, in iconic scenes that anime fans will likely recognize. One of them features Takeshi Kitano playing Daisuke Aramaki looking pissed as hell firing a revolver then dumping the shells. And one features a mysterious kimono woman with a mask, potentially the villain who wants to sabotage Hanka Robotic’s AI technology. I have to admit – I really love these teasers, they’re unique and the perfect way to introduce the world to this movie. The way they glitch in and out is awesome. I want more promos like this. “This is just the beginning.” ›››

Glorious High Def Trailer for Don Coscarelli's 'Phantasm' Remastered

    Phantasm: Remastered Trailer

“If this one doesn’t scare you, you’re already dead.” Horror fans already know this one well. Back in 1979, director Don Coscarelli introduced The Tall Man and his deadly silver Sentinel Spheres to the world in a sci-fi horror film called Phantasm. The film built up a cult following over the years and, believe it or not, they’re just about to release the fourth sequel titled Phantasm: Ravager (see the trailer for that here). In addition to the release of that new film, Coscarelli’s original film that started it all is getting a re-release as Phantasm: Remastered. This brand new 4K rereleae also features remastered 5.1 surround sound, all overseen by J.J. Abrams and the folks at Bad Robot. The film stars A. Michael Baldwin, Angus Scrimm, Reggie Bannister and Bill Thornbury. If you’ve never seen this film, it’s worth checking out. Seriously. ›››

    Fist Fight Trailer

“I’m gunna fight you… Parking lot. After school. It’s ON!” Warner Bros has unleashed the first trailer for a new comedy called Fist Fight, about an after school fight between Charlie Day and Ice Cube. Yep, it’s as fun as it sounds, but there’s tons of crazy stuff leading up to this battle – it’s not just a simple fist fight, it’s an epic rivalry. On the last day of school, these two teachers decide to finally fight it out at an “old-fashioned throw down”. Just fire it up and see for yourself. Also starring Tracy Morgan, Jillian Bell, Dean Norris, Christina Hendricks, Dennis Haysbert, and JoAnna Garcia Swisher. From this teaser, this movie actually looks like it might be crazy enough to watch, just hoping they don’t hold back at all. Let them fight! ›››
