Watch: Trailer for Carrie Fisher & Debbie Reynolds Doc 'Bright Lights'

    Bright Lights Documentary Trailer

“That’s what’s good about losing your memory – there’s so many surprises.” HBO has unveiled a trailer for the documentary Bright Lights, telling the story of the success and fame of Carrie Fisher and her mother Debbie Reynolds. This doc actually premiered at the Cannes Film Festival last year with an appearance by Carrie Fisher, but in “light of the recent and unexpected deaths”, has taken on a whole new meaning and purpose – to solidify their legacy. The film is described as an “intimate portrait of Hollywood royalty in all its eccentricity”, featuring extensive verite footage and vintage family films. From the looks of it, this will be an emotional yet inspiring look at the lives of two people who were some of the greatest entertainers in history. ›››

First Trailer for Indie Horror 'Don't Knock Twice' with Katee Sackhoff

    Don't Knock Twice Trailer

“She opens a doorway between hell, so she can devour the innocent. I think she’s coming for me next…” An international trailer has debuted for a horror thriller titled Don’t Knock Twice. Not to be confused with the indie comedy about an improv group, Don’t Think Twice (which we highly recommend seeing), this film is a creepy horror thriller about a demonic witch. The cast includes Katee Sackhoff, Lucy Boynton, Nick Moran, Javier Botet and Jordan Bolger. This looks dark and moody and scary, most definitely, but it also doesn’t look that original or interesting. Just more creepiness lurking in the dark. Give it a look anyway. ›››

Official US Trailer for Hirokazu Kore-eda's New Film 'After the Storm'

    After the Storm Trailer

“If you’re that interested in being a good father, why didn’t you try harder before?” Film Movement has debuted an official US trailer for the latest film by acclaimed Japanese filmmaker Hirokazu Kore-eda, which first premiered at the Cannes, Toronto and London Film Festivals last year. Titled After the Storm, the familial drama is about an estranged father who attempts to reenter the life of his young son, with the moment to reconnect arriving with a typhoon. The cast includes Hiroshi Abe as Ryota, as well as Taiyo Yoshizawa, Kirin Kiki, Yoko Make, and Lily Frankie. One review from Cannes last year says that even fans of Kore-eda “might be taken aback by the supreme subtlety of his latest, achingly beautiful ode to the quiet complexities of family life.” It looks like another honest, heartfelt Kore-eda film about being a parent. ›››

Looking Back: Jeremy Kirk's Picks for the Top 10 Best Films of 2016

    Jeremy's Top 10 of 2016

It was another stellar year at the cinema, and don’t let anyone try to convince you otherwise. While some are crying shouts that the cinema is dead the art form is doing all it can to prove otherwise, and it’s easy to see how the industry is doing. Below are my Top 10 Films of 2016, but it could just have easily have been 10 completely different movies on this list. The impressive list of honorable mentions (found at the end) should give some credence to that. These are the 10 films, though, that moved me most of all, the films with which I most engaged, the films I believe the cinema community will be talking about for many years, beyond 2016. ›››

  • First Official Trailer for HBO Documentary 'Becoming Warren Buffett'

First Official Trailer for HBO Documentary 'Becoming Warren Buffett'

    Becoming Warren Buffett

“I think sometimes geniuses are by default lonely and isolated.” HBO has debuted an official trailer for the documentary Becoming Warren Buffett, telling the life story of billionaire Warren Buffett, owner of Berkshire Hathaway, who’s famous for being one of the wealthiest people alive. “With unprecedented access to Buffett’s day-to-day personal life, the film tells the improbable story of how an ambitious, humble, numbers-obsessed boy from Nebraska—who still lives in Omaha—became one of the richest, most-respected men in the world.” I’m curious about this, but as always I wonder if the filmmakers are too close to Buffett, telling his story in a glamorized way and never lifting up the rug to see what might be hiding underneath. ›››

  • Watch: Justin Lin's Live-Action 'The Jetsons' Commercial for Arconic

Watch: Justin Lin's Live-Action 'The Jetsons' Commercial for Arconic

    The Jetsons Commercial

“Meet George Jetson!” For years and years, we’ve been writing about the hope/possibility of one day seeing a live-action Jetsons movies. At one point, Robert Rodriguez was attached to a version in development at Warner Bros, but it never came together. Now we can get a different glimpse at what a movie might be like. Engineering firm Arconic hired filmmaker Justin Lin (Annapolis, Tokyo Drift, Fast & Furious 4-6, Star Trek Beyond) to make a 60-second commercial for them reimagining The Jetsons set in the year 2062. It’s actually pretty cool to see, but it’s clearly just an advertisement (showing off lots of engineering innovation) and they also clearly only have the rights to The Jetsons song, so it’s all just for fun. Still worth a quick look. ›››

  • First Trailer for Indie 'Una' Starring Rooney Mara & Ben Mendelsohn

First Trailer for Indie 'Una' Starring Rooney Mara & Ben Mendelsohn

    Una Movie Trailer

“This is my life! I had to fight for this…” A trailer has debtued for an indie drama adapted from a stage play called “Blackbird”. The film is titled Una and premiered at the Telluride & Toronto Film Festivals last year to mixed reviews. Rooney Mara stars as a troubled young woman who comes to a man’s work to confront him about their past, and things get a little crazy. Ben Mendelsohn also stars, and the cast includes Riz Ahmed in a small role, as well as Tobias Menzies and Tara Fitzgerald. While some critics flipped for this film, I found it utterly boring, and it feels way too much like a stage play and not at all like a film (taking place mostly in one drab location). It doesn’t work well as a film, but that’s just my own take. Have a look. ›››

Official Trailer for Jack Fessenden's 'Stray Bullets' Crime Thriller Film

    Stray Bullets Trailer

“My understanding is we’ve got a bit of a situation…” A trailer has debuted for a film titled Stray Bullets, from young filmmaker Jack Fessenden, son of Larry Fessenden. Not to be confused with the comic book series Stray Bullets, this crime thriller is about two teenaged boys who end up in a fight against a hitman while being held hostage by three criminals they discover hiding out in their father’s old mobile home. Jack Fessenden stars along with Asa Spurlock, including James Le Gros, John Speredakos, and Kevin Corrigan, with an appearance by Larry Fessenden. This looks solid, better than expected for a first film. ›››
