First Trailer for Cheesy 'E.T. Meets Pixar' Kids Movie 'My Pet Dinosaur'

    My Pet Dinosaur Trailer

Making friends is easy, keeping them is impossible… What in the heck is this? A trailer has debuted for an Australian kids adventure movie titled My Pet Dinosaur, which is literally being pitched as “E.T. meets Pixar”. The story is about a boy who befriends a dinosaur, that is actually a creation of a military experiment gone wrong. But as they grow closer, he does his best to keep him safe and prevent it from being captured. Seems more like The Iron Giant than Pixar. Starring Jordan Dulieu, Annabel Wolfe, Christopher Gabardi, Tiriel Mora, Harrison Saunders, David Roberts, and Joanne Samuel. This is made by a VFX supervisor, so he knows how to make it all seem realistic, but that doesn’t make up for the cheesiness. ›››

Check Out This Mesmerizing Trailer for A24's Sci-Fi Short Film 'Toru'

    Toru Short Film

In our near future. Over the weekend, A24 debut a mysterious teaser trailer for an untitled film – without any information or details about what it is or what it’s for or anything. After some sneaky investigation, The Film Stage discovered that the trailer is actually for a short film playing at Sundance 2017 called Toru. The footage has a sci-fi edge to it and shows the life of a baby living in a futuristic Japan. Early speculation was that this might be Shane Carruth’s new sci-fi film, but apparently not. It’s actually a very unique short about sci-fi tech that allows a baby to experience a full life in a matter of days. Some are speculating that maybe A24 is developing a feature, or just releasing the short, either way they’ve definitely got our attention. ›››

Sundance 2017: The 10 Most Anticipated Films We Can't Wait to See

    2017 Sundance Film Festival

Back to Sundance we go for another year of discovery. What’s on the line-up this year? Out of the 120+ films showing at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival, I’ve chosen 10 that I’m looking forward to seeing the most. To keep things well balanced, I’ve chosen 5 feature films and 5 documentaries from the line-up. There are so many films playing at the fest, and so many I’ll end up seeing (30+), that this is a quick list to get everyone acquainted with some of the work premiering in 2017 (and why I’m so excited for these). From docs about free speech and doping, to features about life after death. Nothing like watching movies in the mountains. ›››

  • Watch: French Sci-Fi Short 'The Edge' From Director Simon Saulnier

Watch: French Sci-Fi Short 'The Edge' From Director Simon Saulnier

    The Edge Short Film

A forest, a symbol, a dream of humanity. Fire up this fantastic French sci-fi short film titled The Edge, from director Simon Saulnier. After playing at film festivals throughout 2015 and 2016, the short has finally arrived online. The Edge is a contained sci-fi story following the journey of a young girl tracking down the thieves who stole from her something she cares about. It runs about 13 minutes, but is worth watching for the impressive attention to detail and the compelling, mysterious story of a renegade woman. The score by Alex Cortès (Eden Log, Martyrs, Arès) is also stellar. This might be one of the best shorts we’ll see this year. ›››

  • Final Action-Packed Trailer for Russian Superhero Movie 'Guardians'

Final Action-Packed Trailer for Russian Superhero Movie 'Guardians'

    Guardians Movie

One more trailer for this crazy awesome Russian superhero action movie titled Guardians, or Zashchitniki (Защитники) in Russian. We’ve previously featured two different trailers for this movie, but this final one might be the best yet. At the very least, it’s packed with action – and this action is seriously impressive. I might go see this just for the action scenes alone, even if they’re totally CGI, they still look cool. The plot is about a “Patriot” program that created a superhero squad, which included members of multiple soviet republics. There’s a psychopath who wields sleek curved swords, a telekinetic, an invisible witch, and the most badass one of all, a massive “Werebear” wielding a minigun. Starring Valeriya Shkirando, Sanzhar Madiyev, Alina Lanina, Anton Pampushnyy, Sebastien Sisak & Vyacheslav Razbegaev. Fire it up. ›››

  • A Man & His Elephant in First Trailer for Sundance 2017 Film 'Pop Aye'

A Man & His Elephant in First Trailer for Sundance 2017 Film 'Pop Aye'

    Pop Aye Trailer

“The city takes you in as quick as it spits you out.” A trailer has debuted for one of our most anticipated films premiering at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival starting next week. It’s a film titled Pop Aye, from writer/director Kristen Tan, about a man in Thailand who finds his long lost elephant and takes him on a journey home across the country. The description is so unique and this sounds so cool, that I was sold on it already, but this trailer makes it look like a “must see” during the festival. The film’s cast features Thaneth Warakulnukroh, Penpak Sirikul, and Bong the elephant as “Popeye”. I also love the poster they made for this (seen below), and I can’t wait to see the scene it’s from. Looks so awesome! Don’t miss this trailer. ›››

Looking Back: Jeremy Picks the 10 Best Soundtracks/Scores of 2016

    10 Best Soundtracks / Scores of 2016

More often than not a good soundtrack in a movie can be just as captivating as the visuals in which it accompanies. We live within the world of that film as we experience watching it, but a good soundtrack – composed score or curated list of songs – can allow us to reengage with the film on a purely auditory level sometimes even offering up an entirely new perspective. It’s why this list is always such a joy to put together at the end of any year (review my previous soundtrack picks for the Best of 2014 and Best of 2013). Listed below are my Top 10 Soundtracks/Scores of 2016, and, as always, it’s a fun list to put together. These are the scores and song lists I will surely be listening to in the coming months, the soundtracks that are every bit as memorable as the films themselves. (You can also find my Top 10 Films of 2016 here.) Enjoy! ›››

  • Official Trailer for Japanese Ghost Horror Mashup 'Sadako vs Kayako'

Official Trailer for Japanese Ghost Horror Mashup 'Sadako vs Kayako'

    Sadako vs Kayako Trailer

“You must never go near there.” Happy Friday the 13th! Celebrate the day with this trailer for Sadako vs Kayako, a Japanese horror mashup pitting the evil ghosts The Ring and Grudge series against each other. It was inevitable that one day we’d see these two long-black-haired evil spirits battling in the same movie, like how it was obvious one day they’d make Freddy vs Jason. And just like that movie, this seems to be pretty bad, despite their best efforts to make something fun. The cast includes Mizuki Yamamoto, Tina Tamashiro, Aimi Satsukawa, and Misato Tanaka. This looks very silly, but thankfully not as terrible as the Scary Movie spoofs, but I’m still not sure. The rock song they use in the trailer seems like an odd choice. ›››

  • Watch: Frank Langella & Billy Crudup in Trailer for 'Youth in Oregon'

Watch: Frank Langella & Billy Crudup in Trailer for 'Youth in Oregon'

    Youth in Oregon Trailer

“This is so much more pleasant than traveling with a stranger…” Samuel Goldwyn Films has released an official trailer for the film Youth in Oregon, an indie drama about a son-in-law who takes on the task of driving his nearly-80-year-old father-in-law across the country to Oregon to be euthanized at his request. Frank Langella stars as the old timer curmudgeon who just wants to wrap up his life, and Billy Crudup co-stars as his son-in-law who drives him across the country and attempts to change his mind. The full cast includes Christina Applegate, Josh Lucas, Mary Kay Place, Nicola Peltz & Rebecca Blumhagen. I’m always impressed by Frank Langella, he’s an excellent actor, and it’s nice to see him in interesting roles like this. If fellow critic David Ehrlich says it’s a highlight of Langella’s career, maybe this is worth seeing. ›››
