    The Amityville Murders Trailer

“What’ve we done!?” “We awakened them.” Skyline has released a new official trailer for the horror prequel The Amityville Murders, written and directed by filmmaker Daniel Ferrands. This is yet another horror movie in the never-ending Amityville series, and it looks just as forgettable as most of the other films. Did Amityville: The Awakening ever get released? It was shelved for years and never even saw the light of day. Anyway. This one takes us back to the beginning. On the night of November 13th, 1974, Ronald DeFeo, Jr. took his rifle and murdered his entire family as they slept. At his trial, DeFeo claimed “voices” in the house told him to kill. This is their story. Starring John Robinson, Chelsea Ricketts, Diane Franklin, Paul Ben-Victor, Lainie Kazan, and Burt Young. This film looks about as bland and redundant as expected. ›››

Watch: Gobelins Animated Short 'Hors De L'Eau' with Snow Monkeys

    Hors De L'Eau Short Film

We’re almost finished with 2018, but there’s a few more good short films to feature. Hors De L’Eau, which translates to Out of Water in French, is one of the final graduation projects for 2018 made by filmmakers at the animation school Gobelins in Paris, France. This animated short is a parable about exclusion, telling a story about a macaque mother who encounters hostility from a group of snow monkeys due to strict rules which govern their community. The POV perspective is really striking, and allows us to empathize so much more with her sad, harrowing story. This film does have a strong message that it’s trying to convey, but it’s also an impressive work of art – all the monkeys and the animation are exquisite. This is really worth your time to watch – it’s only 7 minutes in total. There’s no dialogue but the score is fantastic as well. View below. ›››

  • Official Trailer for Rogue Love Story 'Heartlock' with Lesley-Ann Brandt

Official Trailer for Rogue Love Story 'Heartlock' with Lesley-Ann Brandt

    Heartlock Trailer

“You gotta find what’s in a person’s soul before you can posses them.” Dark Star Pictures has released an official trailer for an indie “rogue love story” drama titled Heartlock, featuring a clever romantic escape story set inside a prison. The film follows a female prison guard who can’t help her feelings for a new inmate named Lee. However, seasoned convict Continental has taken Lee under his wing, in hopes of persuading him to exploit his new love interest to help them escape. Heartlock stars Lesley-Ann Brandt, along with Alexander Dreymon, Erik LaRay Harvey, Cedric Young, Wayne David Parker, and Jacqueline Williams. This looks pretty slick, perhaps even a little too smart for its own good, but with a nifty concept. ›››

Official US Trailer for Italian Coming-of-Age Drama 'Daughter of Mine'

    Daughter of Mine Trailer

“Were you there when I was born, Daddy?” Strand Releasing has debuted a new official US trailer for the Italian indie drama Daughter of Mine, which first premiered in competition at the Berlin Film Festival earlier this year, and stopped by a number of other festivals around the world. The coming-of-age film tells the story of a young girl torn between two mothers, one who raised her with love and her careless biological mother, who tries to claim her back. A story of imperfect motherhood and inextricable bonds, struggling with overwhelming feelings and dealing with wounds. Valeria Golino stars as Tina, with a cast including Alba Rohrwacher, Sara Casu, Udo Kier, and Michele Carboni. It’s a very moving film about a young girl growinf up fast by deciding what’s best for her, with rave reviews from a few critics. Check it out below. ›››

    The Aspern Papers Trailer

“Don’t try to pay me any compliments. I have been spoiled in this respect…” Cohen Media has debuted an official trailer for an indie romantic drama-mystery titled The Aspern Papers, set in Venice, adapted from Henry James’s 1888 novella of the same name. The story is about a passionate young writer who tries to obtain romance letters a poet sent to his mistress. He travels out to Venice and meets a suspicious elderly woman along with her quiet niece in their grand but dilapidated palazzo. Starring Vanessa Redgrave as Juliana, along with Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Joely Richardson, Poppy Delevingne, Lois Robbins, Jon Kortajarena, and Morgane Polanski. The film premiered at the Venice Film Festival earlier this fall, but I don’t recall hearing much buzz – good or bad – about this film during the festival or afterward. This looks like a sultry, seductive Venetian thriller in the vein of classic romance that might entice a few viewers. ›››

  • First Trailer for Superhero Horror 'Brightburn' Starring Elizabeth Banks

First Trailer for Superhero Horror 'Brightburn' Starring Elizabeth Banks

    Brightburn Trailer

“What if Superman were Michael Myers?” Sony Pictures has unveiled the first full-length trailer for a sci-fi superhero film titled Brightburn, a new film from director David Yarovesky. Produced by James Gunn, the film is being described as “a startling, subversive take on a radical new genre: superhero horror.” It’s a bit like the famous comic Superman: Red Son – what if a child from another world crash-landed on Earth, but instead of becoming a hero to mankind, he proved to be something far more sinister? Elizabeth Banks stars, with David Denman, Jackson A. Dunn, Matt Jones, and Meredith Hagner. This, of course, also reminds me of Chronicle, which also played with the idea of what if a superhero wasn’t a good person. And from the first look at this footage, I am more than intrigued. Consider me entirely sold on this already. ›››

Hang with Zain in Second US Trailer for Nadine Labaki's 'Capernaum'

    Capernaum Trailer

“I want to sue my parents.” That’s the most iconic line in this film. Sony Pictures Classics debuted a second US trailer for the film Capernaum, also known as Capharnaüm, which is Lebanon’s Oscar submission this year. Directed by actress-filmmaker Nadine Labaki, it premiered at this year’s Cannes Film Festival (and won the Jury Prize there), and it also played at the New Horizons, Melbourne, Sarajevo, London, and Toronto Film Festivals. Capernaum takes place on the streets of Beirut, following a 12-year-old boy who decides to sue his parents for bringing him into the world. We follow him as he escapes and runs around, trying to survive by begging and stealing, showing us a disheartening, depressing side of the world we tend to ignore. I’m quoted in the trailers and on the posters for this film, it was one of my favorite films at Cannes this year, and ever since I’ve been doing my best to talk it up. Starring Zain Al Rafeea as Zain. See below. ›››

Watch: Sci-Fi Short 'Now' Examines a Digital Database of Memories

    Now Short Film

“I need you to help me with something… Think of it like it’s a game, like a memory game.” What if we lived in a world where all of our memories were stored into a digital database? Now is a short film written and directed by Justin Zachary, and plays with that concept. The story is about a computer scientist who digs through his girlfriends memories only to discover a haunting truth that he’s desperate to cover up. Zachary also stars in the film, along with Susanna Ericsson, Craig Braun, and Francesca Fondevila. I like the low-key sci-fi elements, subtle and simple but just enough of an edge to make this a believable “near future” story. This reminds me a bit of Ex Machina, and you’ll see why once it gets into it. Definitely worth a watch. ›››

  • IDFA 2018: Chilean Film 'Los Reyes' is a One-of-a-Kind Doggie Doc

    Los Reyes Review

As a die-hard dog lover, I’m always on the lookout for any new films about dogs. Los Reyes is one of the best dog films I’ve ever seen, and that’s not even hyperbole. This magnificent documentary is about a skate park in the capital city of Santiago, Chile where two dogs reign as kings (hence the title Los Reyes, or The Kings in Spanish). Their names are Chola and Fútbol (or Football), and they’ve been living there since, well, forever. The film focuses entirely on these two dogs, and it’s amazing. It’s pretty much perfect (save for one or two shots). These dogs are the coolest, and this is one of the most vividly alive & extraordinarily engaging proofs that dogs do have personalities, friendships, things they love to do, and big thoughts in their minds. ›››
